Mark Twain's Uses Of Suffering In The Writer-Character-Reader Triad, Virginia Armiger Grant
Mark Twain's Uses Of Suffering In The Writer-Character-Reader Triad, Virginia Armiger Grant
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis studies Mark Twain’s uses of suffering in the writer character reader triad. In the book Huckleberry Finn, Twain himself seems to identify more closely with Huck than he does with Tom, as evidenced by the first person narrative in Finn and the more serious, more carefully developed autobiographical incidents in that book. Perhaps because Twain’s later life was so bleak and unhappy, he poured all of his self-defeat and pessimism into his thoughts for Huck’s old age.

Waste Land Or Promised Land: T.S. Eliot's The Idea Of A Christian Society, Amy Wallace
Waste Land Or Promised Land: T.S. Eliot's The Idea Of A Christian Society, Amy Wallace
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In T. S. Eliot's The Idea of a Christian Society, the poet questions the nature of our society's foundations; he believes that Western culture is moving dangerously closer to the liberal and secular and that this shift could be disastrous. Instead, Eliot suggests that we return to what is at the very roots of Western tradition: Christianity. To facilitate this change in direction, Eliot stresses the importance of an educational system which takes a Christian perspective. Also important in his thinking is a Community of Christians, who would act as leaders, and the Christian community (encompassing most of the …
D.H. Lawrence's Philosophy Of Human Relationships As Seen In Four Novels, Jacqueline Eachus
D.H. Lawrence's Philosophy Of Human Relationships As Seen In Four Novels, Jacqueline Eachus
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The growth of an individual into mature selfhood is the primary basis of the Lawrentian relationship. Lawrence describes a mystical kind of rebirth of the self into a deeper level of the unconscious. He says that one should explore the impulses and desires of the unconscious in order to find a deeper, more fulfilled self. Ursula of The Rainbow and Paul of Sons and Lovers are the characters who most successfully begin this growth into separate selfhood.
According to Lawrence the journey into the unconscious is to be accomplished through sensual experiences. He mistrusts the intellect because he feels that …

Westminster Abbey Wreather Abbey Wreath-Laying, John Kane
Westminster Abbey Wreather Abbey Wreath-Laying, John Kane
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
We are here today to pay our respects and do homage to the memory of a great artist and an astonishing woman. Although she died over a hundred years ago, I know that to many members of the George Eliot Fellowship and to readers around the world, she is still our contemporary and to some, she is more vibrant and alive than many living authors. But what if she really were alive today? What if we were actually here not to lay a wreath but to meet the woman herself. I for one would approach the event with some ambivalence. …
