Growing Up Too Fast, Cynthia Rapp Hartman Jan 1988

Growing Up Too Fast, Cynthia Rapp Hartman

Graduate Research Papers

Books published since 1982 with main characters who were eight, nine, ten, and eleven years of age were selected from Booklist and Best Books for Children. ·Descriptions and actions of the main characters were examined in the categories of general behavior, self-concept, social relations, and school orientation. Four hypotheses relating to these four categories were rejected and the researcher concluded that as depleted in …

"Words Moving Secretly Toward Some Goal Of Their Own": The Rhetorical Use Of The "As If" In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Kellie Renee Rayburn Jan 1988

"Words Moving Secretly Toward Some Goal Of Their Own": The Rhetorical Use Of The "As If" In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Kellie Renee Rayburn

Theses Digitization Project

In an effort to reach readers who do not share her strict Roman Catholic beliefs, Flannery O'Connor employs a number of persuasive devices. Prominent among those devices is her rhetorical use of the "as if" construction. As a theoretical joining of the "reality" of this world with the "unknown" of the supernatural, the "as if" introduces "mystery," a vital part of the reader's experience with any of O'Connor's fictional works. By closely examining O'Connor's various uses of the construction in her short stories, the "as if's" differing effects on the reader become apparent. These effects are further demonstrated by a …

The Preface As Criticism: T. S. Eliot On Nightwood, James Morrison Jan 1988

The Preface As Criticism: T. S. Eliot On Nightwood, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Late in his career, while he was an editor at Faber and Faber, T.S. Eliot wrote three prefaces for books by other writers. The books were Djuna Barnes's Nightwood, David Jones's In Parenthesis, and Wyndham Lewis's One-Way Song--each in its own way an anomaly, each stubbornly unassimilable to the paradigms of the modernism with which Eliot was, though he regularly disavowed the association, so closely linked.

The Esl-A/B Book Project, Alan Blackstock, Sharon Snyder Jan 1988

The Esl-A/B Book Project, Alan Blackstock, Sharon Snyder

English Faculty Publications

For the past two years, the ESL ... A/B department Bataan has been providing our students with reading materials that are "predictable," that involve situations and stories familiar and interesting to the students. This effort is based on the findings of Current reading and writing research, which indicate that students learn language-both spoken and written faster when the language material is related to things they know about, care about, and are interested in. In other words, students learn to read faster when they are interested enough to try to predict what the language means, and they learn to write faster …
