American Journey Toward Female Equality With And Through Adrienne Rich's Works, Shelby Scruggs May 1999

American Journey Toward Female Equality With And Through Adrienne Rich's Works, Shelby Scruggs

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

What initially triggered my writing a thesis on the feminist movement in America was the question, "Will women ever truly achieve equality?" Further, will all humanity ever achieve equality? I found through the movement toward equality for women that any movement toward equality progresses toward equality for all because if one group only wants to be equal with others, then they want others to have equality as well. This thesis surveys the feminist movement in America from the 1950's to the 1990's through the realm of the works of Adrienne Rich, American female poet. Rich's progression as a political feminist …

John Donne's Sacred Aesthetics And Protestant Eschatology In La Corona, Karen R. Knudson May 1999

John Donne's Sacred Aesthetics And Protestant Eschatology In La Corona, Karen R. Knudson

Master's Theses

The operative figure for describing John Donne's religious poem, La Corona, is not a circle, as it has often been characterized, but a spiral. This figure incorporates the linear narrative and climax of the poem while maintaining the circularity of on-going spiritual experience. Scholars such as Patrick O'Connell and Elizabeth Hodgson are correct in viewing the poem as Donne's "ars poetica sacra" - his apologetic for the religious poet. But such scholars see either a climax and resolution for the speaker of La Corona or an unresolved question of his place as a poet. This paper argues that while …

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker May 1999

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

"Education is a fearful enterprise," says teacher and philosopher, Parker Palmer. Student-centered/ processoriented pedagogy asks teachers to step out from behind the relative safety of the teacher mask and to enter the risky arena of learning. For the writing teacher, a special challenge is to help students negotiate the risks inherent in the act of writing and in sharing writing with the "Other."

To prevent fears from dominating our students, teachers must model risk-taking and risk negotiation. In my own teaching, my fears around students' reactions to learning my sexual identity meant that I more often reinforced fears than dispelled …

Faulkner's Narrative In The Sound And The Fury And Absalom, Absalom!, Gerard Lassahn Apr 1999

Faulkner's Narrative In The Sound And The Fury And Absalom, Absalom!, Gerard Lassahn

Theses & Honors Papers

In this, the author compares and contrasts the use of narrative in two of William Faulkner’s most famous works, The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!. It also determines how narratives play a role in Faulkner’s work and how the reader understands the story. The author demonstrates how the narrative in Absalom, Absalom! seems to lead the reader farther away from characters while the narrative in The Sound and the Fury draws the reader closer to the characters as they are given insight into their thoughts and feelings.

Go And See The Band: Rock N' Roll As Art And How We Deal With It, Sebastian Blanco Apr 1999

Go And See The Band: Rock N' Roll As Art And How We Deal With It, Sebastian Blanco

Honors Theses

This is my ode to the curse of loving rock 'n' roll. The curse of always having to defend my love of power chords and high-energy bass lines. The curse of trying to describe to people the distinction my mind makes between Pearl Jam and Aerosmith, Ani DiFranco and Jewel. The curse of looking at someone as I explain how important rock 'n' roll is to me, and seeing they don't understand a word. I have devoted the last six years of my life to listening, understanding, learning about rock music, and I do not consider that time wasted. I …

From Literal Path To Transcendent Journey: The Pilgrim's Movement Throughout Inferno, Shelley Manning '99 Apr 1999

From Literal Path To Transcendent Journey: The Pilgrim's Movement Throughout Inferno, Shelley Manning '99

Honors Projects

In his "Letter to Can Grande," Dante attributes the concept of polysemy, which means "many levels," to his poem. l In the letter, Dante states: "For the clarification of what I am going to say, then, it should be understood that there is not just a single sense in this work: it might rather be called polysemous, that is having several senses" ("Letter" 99). This concept not only applies to the mUlti-layered construction of the Divine Comedy but also to its interpretation. Although most critics rely upon the "Letter," I find his defense of hierarchical interpretation in the "Four Levels …

Family Names, Gayle Greene

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

I was ten when my mother changed our name from Greenberg to Greene. I had no idea why she did this, nor, presumably, did she. It had to do with the breakup of her marriage, that was clear-she no longer wanted his name. But why, I asked later, when I was old enough to wonder about such things, didn't she go back to her maiden name?

Expressionist Playwrights From The Lost Generation : The Move Away From German Expressionism, Robert Andrew Ellis Apr 1999

Expressionist Playwrights From The Lost Generation : The Move Away From German Expressionism, Robert Andrew Ellis

Master's Theses

This thesis examines the use of Expressionism, and expressionist elements in the plays of four writers that were part of the Lost Generation. The thesis gives a brief history and definition of Expressionism. It also looks at the plays chronologically, and notes how the use of German Expressionism, present in the early works of Rice and Lawson, was discarded by the later authors in favor of the less-political elements of Expressionism that were originally developed by August Strindberg. Authors and plays include: Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine, John Howard Lawson's Roger Bloomer and Processional, Thomas Wolfe's Welcome to …

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

Stage Directions Uncovered : The Author's Voice In Modern English Drama, Erin Nelson Apr 1999

Stage Directions Uncovered : The Author's Voice In Modern English Drama, Erin Nelson

Honors Theses

The introduction of the modern director at the end of th4e nineteenth century had a major impact on both the role of dramatists in the theatrical process and the way they use stage directions within playscripts. This change will be demonstrated by a study of the way English-speaking dramatists make their intentions known through the scripted stage directions, or didascaliae, in dramatic texts.

It's Not Easy Being Green: Gender And Friendship In Eliza Haywood's Political Periodicals, Rachel Carnell Mar 1999

It's Not Easy Being Green: Gender And Friendship In Eliza Haywood's Political Periodicals, Rachel Carnell

English Faculty Publications

British writer Eliza Haywood's two periodicals, 'The Female Spectator' (1744-46) and 'The Parrot' (1746), protested against the gendered split between political and domestic literary genres, showing that British novels and periodicals written by or addressed to women did engage in political discourse. Through her periodicals, Haywood presented a model for female-female friendship that portrayed women engaging in rational and polite political debate. Furthermore, she argued that this same debate could occur between a woman and a man apart from an apolitical, romantic relationship. Finally, she gave opportunity for friendship to be expressed between those who had been excluded from the …
