Dear Chris:

I am a dear friend writing to you from the futurethe year 2000, in fact-to share some hindsight that will go a long way in helping to get your brand-new career off to a better start. Trnst me on what I'm about to tell you, pal; I know you better than anyone does.

Let me get right to the point: You are a Knucklehead.

You're twenty-three years old, the ink on your diploma is barely dry, you're about to start your career as a high school English teacher, and you are too naive, obtuse, and self-conscious to know …

Going Public: Letters To The World, Deborah Dean

Faculty Publications

When we consider why most of us write, the reasons tend to focus on expressing ourselves, particularly to an audience. We want our voices to be heard, our thoughts to be given substance and weight. We want someone to know and care about what we have to say In essence, we want to be published. Because of that, we are willing to spend time with our thoughts, to wrestle with them as we try to shape them into a form that will have meaning for others, and we are willing to revise/ reshape/rethink what we write so that it becomes …

The Place My Words Are Looking For And Other Stories, Karris Anne Golden Jan 2000

The Place My Words Are Looking For And Other Stories, Karris Anne Golden

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Place My Words Are Looking For and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction and excerpts from a novel. Each piece was written within the past two years, reflecting my work in the graduate program. The issues of identity and gender unify all the elements of this thesis. The first three pieces are short stories that explore a variety of themes. "Fish Story" is told from the perspective of a young woman recalling something that happened to her when she was six years old. Through her memory, the story explores what it means to be biracial, a mother-daughter …

Cycles And Change In Beowulf, Phyllis Brown Jan 2000

Cycles And Change In Beowulf, Phyllis Brown

English

Competing with the apocalyptic view is the possibility that dramatic reversals continue--for better and for worse--beyond Beowulf's death, beyond the end of the poem, beyond the poet's death, the audience's death, and the reader's death--until the end of time--in ways that seem meaningless unless readers provide their own understanding of …

Book Talk In A Thematic Literature Unit, Cathy E. Dickerson Jan 2000

Book Talk In A Thematic Literature Unit, Cathy E. Dickerson

Graduate Research Papers

Discussions of literature may be viewed as a part of the social environment in which students can work together collaboratively to construct meaning. Book talk, or discussion, in a thematic unit encourages students to focus attention on the important ideas in their literature experiences, thus moving them beyond literal comprehension to inferential thinking.

The theme of survival was chosen to promote book talk. A web was created that visually mapped the different aspects of the topic. The book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, was chosen to introduce the unit and was read aloud to all children. This book became a foil …
