Identity Formation And Digital Spaces: A Nexus Of Social, Sexual, And Character-Based Development And Their Educational Potential, James Anthony Ottoson
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to measure the perceptions, thoughts, and interactions of avatars between players of a text-based RPG called Lusternia while also examining the rhetorical choices behind the creation of a character and how the user chooses to interact through this character. Prior research indicates that online spaces are used by those with social anxieties to find potential comfort in a non-physical location, surrounded by like-minded people. This study confirmed that players who were more socially anxious or were neurodivergent used these spaces for such purposes. The findings from the distributed surveys and conducted interviews were then …

Transcendentalism, Art, And Social Change: An Overview For A New Generation, Nidra Kilmer
Theses - ALL
The purpose of this study is to investigate the philosophy, art, methods, and outcomes of the Transcendentalist movement in 19th century America, with the aim of identifying strategies for creative practice that may inspire artists and educators in the 21st century. In the introductory section, the need for such an inquiry is established. Correlations are drawn between transcendental art from China, India, and America, in order to enrich the conversation by examining how ideas of transcendentalism, art, and social change are approached from different cultural perspectives. The historical context and philosophical roots of the American Transcendentalists is summarized, followed by …
Patterns In Eipa Test Scores And Implications For Interpreter Education, Deborah Michele Cates
Patterns In Eipa Test Scores And Implications For Interpreter Education, Deborah Michele Cates
Journal of Interpretation
The present study addresses existing skill gaps of sign language interpreters by analyzing a database of 1,211 scores from the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) to answer four primary questions: what patterns are there in EIPA Romans across score levels, what patterns are there in EIPA indices within Romans across score levels, which discreet language and processing skills correlate most strongly with overall EIPA scores, and how does performance on those discreet language and processing skills compare between graduates and non-graduates of interpreter training programs. Characteristics of score patterns and correlations between indices on the test are examined and discussed …

Virginia English Journal
A monthly exchange of letters from 165 seventh graders in an arts school in Charleston, South Carolina to similar classrooms in 16 countries around the world proved to be the writing project that captured every state writing standard all at once -- brainstorming, writing, collaboration, analysis, proofreading, and re-writing. This one activity was the highlight of the year for each student as letters and gifts poured in from every continent September to June. This was truly a teacher's dream come true.

Virginia English Journal
“All-American Boys, The Hate U Give, and The Great Gatsby: The Process and Product of Multi-Genre in a High School English Methods Course” explains the process of teaching an eight-week multi-genre project to a high school English methods class and within the process highlights student’s representative examples. The cumulative assignment in the course aims to have a digital multi-genre project that they can serve as an exemplar to support their writing instruction as first-year teachers the following year. Bridging the author's voice with the student's voice, the MGP enhances student writing by showing that reading and writing can be …
Re-Imagining Remediation: Problematizing Adolescent Literacy Remediation, Michelle Lague
Re-Imagining Remediation: Problematizing Adolescent Literacy Remediation, Michelle Lague
Virginia English Journal
This article explores the unique literacy needs of adolescent learners and challenges the traditional practice of literacy remediation, often tied to standardized test scores, in U.S. public schools. A call for more responsive literacy instruction that employs a disciplinary, holistic approach rather than a skills-based, deficit-informed approach is articulated, as well as recommendations for practice in literacy instruction informed by research on literacy identity development. As we begin to imagine our schools in a post-COVID world, we must rethink our instruction and move toward a model of literacy that is more relevant, more responsive, and, above all, more human.

An Introduction To The Culturally Responsive Education Model (Crem): A Personal And Professional Journey To Reflective And Transformative Pedagogy, Monica R. Manns
Virginia English Journal
The Culturally Responsive Education Model (CREM) is a framework by which educators can recognize, digest, and implement cultural responsiveness in their classrooms and school communities. Based on the research of James Banks, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Zaretta Hammond, Marva Collins, Bell Hooks, Geneva Gay, James Comer, and Paulo Freire, the CREM serves as a tool, a practitioner’s guide to culturally responsive teaching and learning, with specific focus on content integration (the curricular and programmatic expansion to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of diverse groups); knowledge construction (helping students understand how people create beliefs based on their diverse biographies while validating students’ funds …

Cellphilming And Building Solidarity With Queer Youth To Speak Back To Historical Erasures In New Brunswick Social Studies Classrooms, Casey Burkholder
Cellphilming And Building Solidarity With Queer Youth To Speak Back To Historical Erasures In New Brunswick Social Studies Classrooms, Casey Burkholder
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
New Brunswick, Canada’s K-12 Social Studies curricula erases the myriad histories and experiences of the province’s LGBTQ+ communities. Building on these erasures, this study analyzes how six queer, trans, and non-binary young people (aged 14-17) created cellphilms (cellphone + mobile film production) in response to these absences. In the study, I ask: How might engaging in media and art production with young people—and screening and exhibiting these productions in online and community spaces—work to counter dominant forms of apathy and denial, and support youth to claim a stake in creating solidarities, belonging, and community-making? What is required for youth-produced media …
A Collaborative Autoethnography On Challenging Sociohistorical Constructions Of Gender In Teacher Education, Marie-Helene Brunet, Mark Currie
A Collaborative Autoethnography On Challenging Sociohistorical Constructions Of Gender In Teacher Education, Marie-Helene Brunet, Mark Currie
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
In early 2019, we developed a workshop that examines changing representations of masculinities and femininities through advertisements from today and from 30 years ago. We employ a pedagogy of discomfort (Boler, 1999) and challenge participants—whether students, teacher candidates, or seasoned educators—to historicize and critique how they co-construct sociohistorical representations and performativity of gender (Butler, 1990). Our hopes are that participants begin deconstructing how and which understandings of gender became normalized to them, as well as how they perpetuate or disrupt “masculinities” and “femininities”. Through regular debriefing, we realized that we do not merely facilitate but also actively participate in each …

America: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Comparisons: A Case Study Of The Representation Of “America” In Preservice Teacher Lectures, Kristal Curry, Suzanne Horn
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Theories and discussions around historical consciousness explore the myriad ways our identities and contexts shape our interpretations and understandings of the past. In this paper, narrative and historical consciousness will be used as a lens to understand the choices pre-service teachers make in the way they “define” America within their lectures. A total of 16 recorded 20-minute lectures from six social studies pre-service teachers were transcribed and coded for their insight into how these future teachers taught about America. Each of the pre-service teachers was white, between the ages of 20-25, considered (themselves) middle class, and were preparing to teach …

Teacher Films: Examining Hollywood Representations Of Our Practice, Amy Mungur, Scott Wylie
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
What does it mean to teach and be taught? How have we come to know what schooling is? And, how can engagement with these pervasive, and oftentimes troubling representations of schooling, teaching, and students with our preservice teachers in/form their teacher identities? Taking Hollywood "feature film" as our inquiry into education, schooling, and social studies (teacher) education, this paper reflects upon the course Dangerous Minds, Dead Poets, and Democratic Education on the Silver Screen, a course the authors first developed as graduate students and have since offered variations of at their respective institutions. While course content has been relatively …

The Holodomor National Awareness Tour: A Reflection On Teaching, Alexandra Marchel
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Dr. Alexandra Marchel’s article documents the work of the Holodomor National Awareness Tour (Canada-Ukraine Foundation), which runs an award-winning mobile classroom that travels across Canada, raising public awareness on the history of the state-orchestrated famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932-1933. Marchel explores her experience working as Program Manager and Educator for this public history project, a project that goes beyond the traditional walls of a classroom to show history as an act of creating civic engagement. She speaks about her pedagogical practice, which is to invite students to think critically about the patterns and dynamics of past and present genocides, …

Am I Canadian: Making Canadian History Personally Relevant To Students (And To Me), Melanie V. Williams
Am I Canadian: Making Canadian History Personally Relevant To Students (And To Me), Melanie V. Williams
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This reflection explores the challenges and opportunities inherent in teaching and learning Canadian history when the majority of the learners – and the teacher herself – are first- and second-generation Canadians. The intersectionality and constructed-ness of identity, and the effects of individual versus collective memory on identity, can either alienate students from Canadian history or provide them with a variety of entry points into the subject. Historiography also plays an important role in engaging students in Canadian history, academically as well as personally. Ultimately, what students must learn in history class is the ability to construct Canadian histories that reflect …

Three Learning Contexts As Paths To Preservice Instrumental Music Teachers' Score Analysis, Rehearsal Planning, And Instructional Readiness: An Exploratory Study In Professional Development, Jennifer Lee Pulling
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite an abundance of evidence-based research pointing to the effectiveness of long-term teacher professional development (PD) (Darling-Hammond, Hyler & Gardner, 2017; Desimone, 2009), instrumental music teachers who seek to improve their teaching practices are limited to and often prefer short-term PD opportunities (Bauer, 2007; West, 2020). In recent years, a growing knowledge base focused on music teacher PD has given attention to long-term, content-based and collaborative music PD (Conway, 2015; Kastner, 2014; Stanley, Snell & Edgar, 2014) while a dearth of evidence-based research exists on short-term music PD (Bauer, 2007; West, 2020). The purpose of this collective case study was …

An Upstander Is A Person In Your Neighborhood: Children, Sesame Street, And Race In 2020, Gemma Yoo
An Upstander Is A Person In Your Neighborhood: Children, Sesame Street, And Race In 2020, Gemma Yoo
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Educational children’s media, such as the program Sesame Street, may be the most accessible format for teaching young children about race and racism in the United States. Throughout its history, Sesame Street has attempted to confront racism through its diverse cast and, in the summer of 2020, by directly addressing the topic with children and families. However, both its passive representation and active discussion fall short of what is needed to confront systemic racism. This paper addresses Sesame Street’s past and present role as a leader in children’s educational media, and advocates that the program employ Critical Race Theory to …
