This State Has "Boundries" (Sic), But No Focus: A Review, Richard Defoe Feb 2000

This State Has "Boundries" (Sic), But No Focus: A Review, Richard Defoe

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Review of Louisiana Biographical Dictionary: People of all Times and Places Who Have Been Important to the History and Life of the State. Somerset Publishers, St. Clair Shores, MI, 1999. $87.50.

Review:

Somerset Publishers produce biographical dictionaries of some of these United States. The Louisiana volume does not instill confidence in their efforts. Sloppy printing, sloppy proof-reading and sloppy and turgid writing are just the beginning of the problems with this book – the title of this review features one of their glaring spelling errors from the foreword.

But the major problem with this book seems to be focus, …

Super Bowl Vs. Virtual Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is time for the mid-winter festival of commercial excess. It is time for the holiday commemorating Thorstein Veblen. It is the time of conspicuous consumption, conspicuous leisure, and conspicuous waste. It is a time without restraints and without limits. It is Super Bowl Weekend in America.

The Changing Geography Of Sport In America Since Wwii, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2000

The Changing Geography Of Sport In America Since Wwii, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The heavy presence of the National Football League in Florida on Saturday, three Florida teams involved in two playoff games in the state, may or may not be a record. It is however an indication of how much the geography of sport has changed since the end of World War II. These changes are seen not just in Florida but all across the American landscape and are a reminder of how much sport has changed over the past half-century.

Losing Money Going To Bowl Games, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2000

Losing Money Going To Bowl Games, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the barrage of bowl games these past several days one can only marvel at the willingness of sponsors and cities to pay out millions of dollars to universities to provide a few hours of entertainment during the holidays. Last year the University of Wisconsin took away $12.5M for the Big Ten from the Badger's Rose Bowl appearance. The participants at this year's Sugar Bowl, allegedly the national championship game, will take away between $11M and $13M each. Moving down the pecking order to near the bottom the payouts run to about a million dollars.

Romantic Relationships: Beliefs Reflected, Reinforced, And Created In Popular Song Lyrics And Musical Content, Heather J. Meierhofer

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Language and music work together in popular songs to portray messages that help construct listeners' reality. As humans, we understand and interpret the world through the language and images provided for us in our symbolic universe. Mass media – particularly those forms that distribute popular music – help to create and reflect the ideologies, or common sets of beliefs, within a culture. Thus, popular music is an important artifact for examination. Popular music is a mass media form in which messages concerning romantic relationships abound. This study's examination of the Billboard top eight popular songs from 1990 to 1995 provides …

Egypt: Encourage Journalists To Cover Reproductive Health, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

To raise public awareness of reproductive health (RH) issues, the Population Council’s Frontiers project and the Futures Group’s Policy project jointly organized four press briefings and provided background materials to key journalists from Arabic newspapers and magazines. From May 1999 to June 2000, project staff worked closely with 20 Egyptian journalists, including editors of women’s pages and senior editors. The press briefings covered youth, marriage patterns, contraceptive technology, and menopause. The press kit prepared for each briefing contained fact sheets, reference materials, a contact list of key experts, and an evaluation sheet. To assess RH reporting and track coverage resulting …

Visual Communication And Entertainment Through Animation, James T. Hamrock Jan 2000

Visual Communication And Entertainment Through Animation, James T. Hamrock

Graduate Research Papers

Virtual animation is used today for everything including entertainment in motion pictures and video games, advertising on television and the internet, virtual animated videos used for industrial teaching aids, and project approvals for major building construction. Many modem companies are now insisting that new products are created using 3-D modeling and occasionally animation before approving funds for further development.

The research question in this work centers around thoughts and visions being effectively communicated so others can comprehend and share in the same perspective. This research will show the use of technology in answering this important question: Exploration of the literature …
