Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo Sep 2024

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo

Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal

Luis Jiménez’s Southwest Pietà (1984) intended to combat cultural amnesia that obscured Native Americans’ and Mexicans’ contributions to the state. Jiménez’s Pietà sought to counter the iconography that shaped New Mexico’s colonialist heritage. But Old Town Albuquerque shrouds Native American and Mexican contributions to the region. Albuquerque’s public art has often been deployed as a wedge to write and rewrite narratives about land inhabitants, but the city’s public art tells a powerful story about race and place in New Mexico. This essay explores the socio-historical battle of land memorialization in Old Town Albuquerque and provides a geo-racial perspective about the …

Social Media Influencers' Impact On Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Kennedi O. Kutz, Kiara Espinal, Erin Flynn, Julia Cheney

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The study entails how social media usage and parasocial relationships with social media influencers impact the audience’s purchases as a consumer. The survey covers a wide range of questions discussing the different social media platforms, how often they engage on them, and how often they click and engage with advertisements and influencers. It also covered questions that collected the participants' demographics to better understand which groups are more likely to be influenced by advertisements and influencers. We have found that younger audiences are more likely to have their consumer purchases influenced by social media advertisements and influencers than older audiences. …

Don’T Bite The Hand, Make Love To It: Disrupting Pervasive White Representation In Mitski’S “Your Best American Girl”, Nicole Bussey

Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)

In 2016, indie-rock artist Mitski released a music video for her song, “Your Best American Girl.” Mitski Miyawaki, a Japanese American, wrote the song from the perspective of a woman who is unable to have a relationship with her white love interest due to their disparate social positions. The music video engages with the song’s message, adding nuance and complexity through the audiovisual medium. The music video for “Your Best American Girl” chronicles Mitski’s journey towards self-acceptance while critiquing the pervasive whiteness that permeates popular romantic narratives. Through a close textual analysis, this essay aims to analyze the ways in …

Jurnal Komunikasi Indonesia

The presence of online platforms such as financial technology lending platforms is like a double-edged knife for women. These platforms pave the way for restrictions on women accessing loans. However, the use of fintech poses risks to women. They become victims of cybercrime with the existence of desk collectors who collect online loans and the third party who use the women's data. This study aims to examine the cybercrime implications of using fintech experienced by women related to fintech lending and then explore the role, data protection, and scope of the PDP Law as a solution. This study uses Qualitative …

Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Looking at fan activity through the lens of play, this paper considers the archiving opportunities and challenges posed by new technology for playful ephemeral fan co-creation in multiplatform digital contexts. These include technical concerns such as platform fragility and how to capture inherent liveness and temporality, but also ethical concerns such as sustainability, consent and content moderation.

To examine this, the paper takes fan-created alternate reality games (ARGs) as a particular example of such archiving challenges. It first describes a real example of such a game, ‘Blow the Man Down’ before introducing speculative design as a method to consider a …

You Never Walk Alone: Bts As A Symbol Of Light For Youth, Aaliyah Robinson Aug 2024

You Never Walk Alone: Bts As A Symbol Of Light For Youth, Aaliyah Robinson

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

This essay examines how the South Korean music group, BTS, has utilized their platform to bring awareness to mental health in youth. I specifically analyze the use of their personal stories and experiences as a means of communication or outreach to their fans, also known as the ARMY. Exploring the theory of identification, or a direct sense of connectedness between a speaker and an audience, I argue that through their music and personalized rhetoric speech patterns, BTS seeks to allow their fans to view their experiences as the same. This has created a dynamic encompassing a sense of friendship and …

"You Are More Than Just Your Gift:" Facework And Idealization In Disney's Encanto, Janelle L.H. Gruber, Valerie Lynn Schrader

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

In this rhetorical analysis, we apply Goffman’s theory of facework to the Disney film Encanto, arguing that Encanto provides important lessons regarding facework and advocates for using facework in moderation. Encanto tells the story of the Madrigals, a family who experiences a miracle that results in each member of the family having a special gift – all except for one, the teenage protagonist, Mirabel. When Mirabel recognizes that both the miracle and her family are in danger, she realizes that her individual family members are using facework in order to fit in with the rest of the family and impress …

Enhancing Credibility And Fairness: A Qualitative Study Of Transparent Judging In The Festival Film Indonesia, Ngurah Rangga Wiwesa, Wan Hartini Wan Zainodin Dr, Dzaa Imma Abdul Latiff

Jurnal Sosial Humaniora Terapan

The implementation of a transparent judging process is vital for the credibility of the Festival Film Indonesia (FFI). Clear evaluation criteria, including aspects like theme, originality, technical execution, and cultural impact, should be publicly accessible to foster trust in the system. A diverse jury pool, comprising established filmmakers, rising talents, regional representatives, and experts in various film aspects, is essential to ensure a balanced perspective and reduce bias. Strengthening FFI's credibility also involves a robust nomination and selection process, with preliminary screenings by specialized committees to ensure high-quality contenders. Ensuring the judging process is free from undue influence through measures …

Systematic Literature Review On Parental Involvement In Digital Education, Dóra Szabó, Krisztina Győri, Panna Lajos, Gabriella Pusztai

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Today it is generally known that digital tools suitable for enriching education can benefit and hinder teaching-learning. To understand the reasons behind students’ behavior, one must take an ecological approach to digital education. It would be misleading to think that only teachers experience difficulties; Digital education raises many questions and is the subject of constant debate, to which the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed significantly. In our systematic literature review, using the PRISMA model, we aimed to explore parental techniques and the degree of parental efficiency revealed by the literature on the digital education of children in families. After the multi-step …

The pervasive adoption of online learning in educational systems worldwide has resulted in delivering this learning to digital natives, today’s university students. In this context, it is crucial to acknowledge the significance of students’ satisfaction in determining the success or failure of online learning. This study examines the impact of the four New Media Literacy (NML) dimensions on students’ satisfaction with online learning (SOL). A total of 640 university students from four universities in Egypt were included in the data collection process. The findings derived from structural equation modelling revealed that the four dimensions of (NML), namely functional consumption, critical …

What Kinds Of Personal Data Do Primary School Pupils Share With Whom? Children’S View Of Personal Data And Its Implications For Teaching About Privacy, Martin Hermida, Raffael Meier, Iwan Schrackmann, Nina Imlig-Iten, Eva Marinus

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Safeguarding personal digital data is crucial and requires appropriate training. However, privacy remains a novel topic, leaving teachers with limited guidance. This study investigates how elementary school students perceive personal data and assesses pre-service teachers’ accuracy in predicting children’s responses. Employing Nissenbaum’s contextual integrity framework, the outcomes of this research offer a nuanced perspective on privacy, considering different recipients and data types. The study surveyed 94 Grade 3 and Grade 5 students, asking them to indicate with which recipients (no one, parents, best friends, class, all other people) they would share specific information. In addition, 75 pre-service teachers were asked …

Looking To The Past And Abroad To Enhance U.S. Presidential Debates, Jacob W. Justice, Talya P. Slaw, John Koch

Studies in Debate and Oratory

Presidential debates are a valuable, but flawed, method of educating voters about policy issues and candidates. Growing dissatisfaction with presidential debates, and polling evidence suggesting they are failing to inform audiences, creates exigence to reconsider the format of future debates. In this essay, we propose modifications to the format of United States presidential debates, in the interest of facilitating greater clash and audience education. To improve U.S. presidential debates, we draw upon two sources of inspiration: the history of U.S. presidential debates and international experiences with political debates. We recommend exploration of new debate formats that include (1) a narrow …

Atrocity Prevention In The Digital Era: Adapting Norms, Laws, And Code To Changes In The Ways Atrocities Are Committed, David J. Simon, Samhitha Josyula, Joshua Lam, Julian D. Melendi

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Emerging digital technologies have changed some of the ways that genocides are planned and executed. This paper examines those differences, calling attention to how changes in the execution of genocide should prompt a shift in the approaches to atrocity prevention. It develops a conceptual framework addressing how atrocity prevention efforts might adapt to new technology within three realms of potential prevention efforts: the ethical (norms), the legal (laws), and the digital (code).

Back To The Future? How The Global Powers And The Local Militias Hindered Un Multi-Dimensional Mediation In The Libyan And Syrian Civil Wars After 2011, Ahmed S. Mahdi, Melissia Shapib, Noura Gamie

Future Journal of Social Science

UN mediation efforts in the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, which followed the Arab Revolutions of 2011, were hampered by the great power intervention, and by the belligerents' insistence on solving the problem through military victory instead of negotiation. There is a shortage in the literature which examines an alternative, or how UN mediation can be improved. One of the few models to assess, and improve, UN mediation in civil wars is the so-called Kane Model (2022). Using the model presented by Kane to assess the procedures of a powerful UN mediation process in internationalized civil wars, this paper argues …

Telematic Performance In Electronic Dance Music (Edm), Yongsi Wang

Journal of Network Music and Arts

This paper aims to discuss to what extent telematic performances within the framework of the “Beyond Time and Space - London Tokyo Online 2023” initiative serve as a comparative paradigm to physical live performances, particularly in the domains of technical exigencies, artistic expression, and audience engagement.

Central to this study is the “Beyond Time and Space - London Tokyo Online 2023” event, a simultaneous, interactive electronic live music performance connecting physical venues in London and Tokyo. Through JackTrip and Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), this event aspired to explore the applicability and limitations of telematic technology in live electronic music performance …

Kompost*Klang*Küche*: Telematic Worlding With Glitch, Hannah Vyborg Walter, Robert Torche, Cedric Spindler, Eric Larrieux, Patrick Muller

Journal of Network Music and Arts

This paper explores concepts and practices of telematic performances, particularly through the lens of the project kompost*klang*küche*. It emphasizes spatial discontinuity within networked artistic collaborations, as opposed to immersive continuity.

Telematic performance formats utilize network technologies to facilitate low latency artistic endeavors across geographical divides, creating a complex interplay between local, remote, and intermediary spaces. In this context, we interpret spatial configurations from a phenomenological point of view as telematic SPACE in which technical components are in place in three spaces (local, remote and intermediary space) while practiced, embodied and inhabited in an anthropological space, where the overlay and dynamics …

How To Be In Two Places At Once: A Search For The Immersive Experience In Renaissance Music And Visual Arts., Andrew Hallock Jul 2024

How To Be In Two Places At Once: A Search For The Immersive Experience In Renaissance Music And Visual Arts., Andrew Hallock

Journal of Network Music and Arts

Immersion is a hot topic, but it is often invoked in a vague or shallow way. This essay aims to arrive at a more nuanced consideration of the immersive experience by presenting some perhaps surprising arguments from the past—from Renaissance music and visual arts—drawing parallels with our own time, and positing that the Network Arts can take inspiration from this history to enhance its own immersive endeavours. Four interrelated topics serve as the basis for this investigation: miniature devotionalia, polyphonic canons, anamorphic puzzles, and early cosmology. By using perspective to disclose hidden meanings, ideas, and realities, these varied practices draw …

Connectivity, Presence, And Time: A Pedagogical Experience With Telematic Music, Cássia Carrascoza Bomfim, Alexandre Ficarelli, Danilo Rossetti

Journal of Network Music and Arts

This article aims to discuss the notions of connectivity, presence, and time in the specific context of telematic music. To do so, we describe the work of the Telematic Ensemble LaFlauta, formed by students and professors from the University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto campus, for performance at the NowNet Arts Conference 2023.4 This work involved rehearsals and performances of three compositions dedicated to the group: Virtual Studies (2023) by Paulo C. Chagas, Modules 2 - My Words (2023) by Cássia Carrascoza, and Textural Studies (2023) by Danilo Rossetti. We conclude that the positive results of telematic music in a …
