Triad: Sculpture Projects Doyle/Gourfain/Leicester, Wright State University Art Galleries

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

The project documented in this catalog were first conceived in early 1978 by Ed Levine, then chairman of the Department of Art and Art History at Wright State University, and Betty Collings, then director of the University Gallery at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Both institutions had, for five years, been sponsoring a variety of exhibitions and experimental projects that probed various aspects of contemporary art. The similarity of goals between the two institutions made this collaborative effort possible.

Each of the three artists visited Dayton and Columbus in the spring of 1979 to survey possible contexts for his …

Influences On The Collage Of Ken Brewer, Ken Brewer Jan 1979

Influences On The Collage Of Ken Brewer, Ken Brewer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze influences exerted on the collage of Ken Brewer by Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenberg, and Alberto Burri, to explain the evolution of Brewer's work, and to serve as a source of ideas for others attempting to work in collage.

In the first three sections of the thesis brief overviews of the work of Schwitters, Rauschenberg, and Burri are presented. Schwitters, a member of the dada school of art, was a pioneer in the use of collage as an art form. He, like other dada artists, rejected the social and artistic values of post …

The Ritual Of Torero, Harbert J. Jones Jan 1979

The Ritual Of Torero, Harbert J. Jones

Masters Theses

The thesis project is to describe the art of bullfighting as a ritual. I discuss term and principles which are pertinent to me, and as a means of artistic self-analysis. The thesis project is to allow an exploration into a traditional form of painting which is a challenge and of practical value to me. In part, the reasoning and mechanics are to be solved. Beginning with the origin of the bullfight I describe the evolutionary state of human courage against animal force. The Spanish had a tremendous influence on the modern art of bullfighting on foot. The difficult thing is …

Felix Vallotton’S Intimites: “Le Cauchemar D’Un Erudit”, Lisa Marie Holst

Honors Papers

At the beginning of the last decade of the nineteenth century, amidst lively experimentation in the graphic arts, there emerged in Paris an artist whose striking woodcuts soon brought him the recognition and the esteem of his contemporaries . Félix Vallotton's woodcuts represented to many a uniquely modern application of the venerable technique of printing from a carved block of wood . Within a year of his first experiments in the medium, Vallotton was highly praised in print by Octave Uzanne in an article entitled "La Renaissance de la gravure sur bois : un néoxylographe" as the progressive figure in …

Woman, A Vehicle Of Visual Expression In Contemporary Times, Tamara C. Bogue

Masters Theses

This paper is a discussion of a woman as a vehicle of visual expression in contemporary times. Certain artists have been selected for the discussion of woman as subject matter and as symbol. An overview is given concerning some trends that have an influence on contemporary society, women in that society, and consequently affect how women have been portrayed. The selected artists were chosen as representatives of "directional types" or "theme types" and some of the implications of their female imagery is discussed. The concept of woman as symbol in her historically recorded debut as fertility figurine ("Willendorf Venus") sets …

Technician-Potter Versus Artist-Potter, Diann Marie O'Brien

Masters Theses

It is the intention of this paper to bring to the pottery student an awareness of the concept of technician-potter versus artist-potter.

Personifying Subliminal Patterns, Brian C. Gran Jan 1979

Personifying Subliminal Patterns, Brian C. Gran

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

What comes next? 1. - 2. x 3. f 4. * The marks above reflect a certain pattern. The logical answer to the question is "x". In order for a person to solve the problems/he has to implement logical reasoning to formulate a conscious pattern. It is the purpose of this thesis to assert subconscious patterns or subliminal patterns. Entitling it to the effect of "personifying subliminal patterns" means just that -- to give an identity to those patterns that exist below the threshold of one's awareness.

A Thesis Concerned With The Construction Of Impromptu Sculptures Solving Problems Of Equilibrium, Weight, And Movement, Jim Blocker Jan 1979

A Thesis Concerned With The Construction Of Impromptu Sculptures Solving Problems Of Equilibrium, Weight, And Movement, Jim Blocker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For me the attainment of awareness or understanding through sensory perception (or the act of possessing quick and immediate insight into the dynamics of form and space) is fundamental for spontanous [sic] ideas. To achieve and/or express these feelings and ideas in sculpture requires an automatic and intuitive response. My sculpture is constructed directly and simply using found stock piled materials (wood, rope, glass, steel and sticks). No preplaning or sketching is used. In selecting materials, I have responded to them instinctively, relating shapes, colors, sizes and other personal interests on an intrinsic basis. My intuition exhibits itself spontaneously as …
