Spira Mirabilis, Kim D. Ray May 1998

Spira Mirabilis, Kim D. Ray

Dissertations and Theses

My graduate work, culminating in Spira Mirabilis, my final thesis project, has been about a search for simplicity. What I have discovered along the way is complexity. In searching for a fundamental principle that generates a complex form, I discovered an apparently simple form that is, rather, a consequence of complex relationships. By creating a work that is grounded on a fundamental, universal principle, I hoped to evoke a subliminal or other-than-conscious response that would effect a transformation in the viewer. Ultimately, I found my own transformation through the creative process, and acquired a new viewpoint through a minimal …

Theory Of Nothing, Adam Wieslaw Rupniewski May 1998

Theory Of Nothing, Adam Wieslaw Rupniewski

Dissertations and Theses

My work was presented in the form of an installation. Using three and two-dimensional objects, as well as sound and light, I created a site specific type of installation. Materials involved in this project were hydrostone, plaster, steel and copper. The sound I recorded on my steel sculptures in an acoustic space and then mixed to create sound compositions to amplify the feeling for the space. This installation reflects my pursuits in painting and sculpture, as well as my interest in music and light effects. Its philosophical and spiritual content were expressed through visual language, symbolic use of elements and …

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …

Construction, Mylan Rakich Iii Apr 1998

Construction, Mylan Rakich Iii

Dissertations and Theses

Life is a series of moments that unfortunately can not be looked at all at once but can take on a form over a period of time. Every last moment builds on the next. The mediums used not only allowed form but dictated abstract, 3-dimensional compositions referred to as: construction. Every wooden board, piece of paper and brushstroke of paint, marks a moment in the development of the completed construction. The layering of mediums exposed the process of construction as a creation, not just the artist's personally informed intention towards the mediums. The mediums and the scale of each piece, …

Metamorphoses Digital Photography In The Electronic Age And Perfectm Digital Photography In The Bay Area, Jan Ekenberg

SWITCH

Two exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Modern Art, “Metamorphoses: Digital Photography in the Electronic Age” and “Pixel Perfect: Digital Photography in the Bay Area,” both debate whether digital photography is a kind of art based on how people interpret photography. With the advent of powerful computer software such as Adobe’s Photoshop, artists can easily manage their work regardless of whether they want to create collages, adjust the color, add additional layers of images or text, experiment with scale, or transform dreamlike ideas into surreal artworks for public display. The two shows challenge the principles of photography - to …

Editor's Notes: Sound, Loretta L. Lange Jan 1998

Editor's Notes: Sound, Loretta L. Lange

SWITCH

This switch article goes over the use of sound and how some people consider it to be a language, an art, or a form of technology. Lange refers to Agostino Di Scipio’s arguments on how technology was created by humans and therefore should be an art. More specifically, how sound can be an electronic art, especially since it can change or be manipulated just as musical artists create music. Next, she refers to Larry Wendt’s article and how sound composition or poetry is structured. He goes on to explain that sound-text doesn’t have a solid order and is flexible enough …
