On The Wall: Wallpaper By Contemporary Artists, Judith Tannenbaum, Marion Boulton Stroud Jan 2003

On The Wall: Wallpaper By Contemporary Artists, Judith Tannenbaum, Marion Boulton Stroud

Books

Wallpaper was once ubiquitous and is still common in domestic settings, but it has rarely been given the same kind of attention bestowed on fine-art objects or other applied arts. Nonetheless, many artists– from Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) to William Morris (1834-96) and Andy Warhol (1928-87) — have created wallpaper and considered this activity to be a significant endeavor.

Town And Country: The Landscape In American Art, Sharon L. Gustafson Jan 2003

Town And Country: The Landscape In American Art, Sharon L. Gustafson

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The subject of Town and Country: Landscape in American Art seems an appropriate topic particularly in Nebraska where the land plays an integral part in defining our identity. The geography provides us physical sustenance as well as aesthetic nourishment. There is a closeness to the land that is perhaps even more evident in the plains then anywhere else on earth.

Landscape painting became a significant form of artistic expression in the 19th century. No longer merely the idealized backdrop for religious, classical or allegorical subjects, landscape itself became the topic of concentration. The British artist John Constable (1776-1837) and other …

Carpets Of Andalusia (Exhibition), Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The fall of Granada in 1492 reestablished Christian dominion in Spain after centuries of Islamic rule. The rapid expansion of Islam from Arabia in the 7th century encompassed the rich cultural legacy of the Late Antique world, forging a unified empire throughout the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean lands and across North Africa to Spain within a short span of several decades. Arab and Berber armies had crossed into Spain in 711, generating at once an effort that lasted for many generations to restore Christian rule. In Islamic times, the Iberian peninsula was called al-Andalus, or Andalusia. Although we have …

John Dos Passos and His World

September 26 to December 07, 2003

Introduction

One of America's most innovative writers, John Dos Passos (1896-1970) also completed more than four hundred paintings and drawings that chronicle his life's journeys. In fifty years, Dos Passos wrote forty-two literary works, and his novels Manhattan Transfer (1925) and the trilogy U.S.A. (published together in 1938) provide a panoramic social history of the first three decades of the twentieth century. Similarly, his paintings captured the times in which he lived and addressed the world around him, in landscapes from …

Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare Jan 2003

Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare

Whittier Scholars Program

This senior project is an art creation of 30 signs that address how the print media portrays women and imbues unrealistic and potentially harmful messages into their advertisements. This study discusses how advertisements contain information that is not obvious from a quick glance, but due to the numerous ads that people digest every day, this information becomes subconsciously absorbed and affects all aspects of one’s life. This study highlights how every aspect of what advertisements convey, intentional or not, matters a great deal and has a huge impact on people’s lives. This project also includes Senior Symposium notes, the aforementioned …

Responding To The Demise Of Adolescent Artmaking: Charting The Course Of Adolescent Development In An Exceptional Art Classroom, Mark Graham Jan 2003

Responding To The Demise Of Adolescent Artmaking: Charting The Course Of Adolescent Development In An Exceptional Art Classroom, Mark Graham

Faculty Publications

Adolescent artistic developmental potential is often underestimated, ignored, or dismissed as irrelevant. This article argues that the deliberate cultivation of artistry is neglected and the task of developing mastery in any visual language is rarely attempted. By adolescence, most children give up the visual arts as a means of understanding or expression. Although drawing is accepted as a fundamental skill in most secondary art programs, there are different opinions on how to teach drawing, and to whom drawing should be taught. Endpoints of development and the role of cultural influences are two areas that invite different points of view. This …

Identity And Self-Expression Through The Visual Arts, Cynthia Nalbach Jan 2003

Identity And Self-Expression Through The Visual Arts, Cynthia Nalbach

Whittier Scholars Program

My senior project explored how the visual arts can be used to express one’s identity and emotions. I designed an art curriculum, based on identity research, with projects focusing on the theme of identity and self-expression. I tried to be specific enough when designing project assignments to give students clear guidance, while also making them open-ended, allowing for many interpretations to incorporate the student’ differing interests and levels of identity development. I want these projects to challenge students to think about who they are, without pushing them beyond their current limitations of comfort level, as far as self-expression was concerned. …

The Generation Of Forms And Thai Typeface Design, Pornprapha Phatanateacha Jan 2003

The Generation Of Forms And Thai Typeface Design, Pornprapha Phatanateacha

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in culture, design, fashion and lifestyle are very common for a developing country such as Thailand. Losing the identity and significant quality of Thai culture is the biggest concern in this rapid movement in Thai society. The biggest challenge is to preserve the existing culture within the development in the society. These problems within the rapid change not only affect Thai lifestyle and fashion but also Thai graphic design. There is a trend in poster design, advertising, and packaging to follow Western design. That influence suggests that Thai design follow a Western model in order to be as successful. …
