A Place To Stand: Wilderness And Civilization, Clancy Flynn Neilsen Jan 2003

A Place To Stand: Wilderness And Civilization, Clancy Flynn Neilsen

Whittier Scholars Program

This senior project is a research paper based on philosophy and social theories and their application to environmental studies. Some references the student uses are well known theorists and thinkers such as John Locke, Michel Foucault, Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Henry David Thoreau. They write, Understanding the problem of wilderness and its historicity is more important today than ever. Turning the focus of theory onto wilderness can help us understand and correct, not only ecological issues, but social problems as well. Wilderness has always been a place symbolic of great freedom. Its permanent degradation would be a blow to …

Rogerian Rhetoric As Negotiation: Does Its Dependence On Game Theory Pose Ethical Problems?, Stacy Fussell Thorne Jan 2003

Rogerian Rhetoric As Negotiation: Does Its Dependence On Game Theory Pose Ethical Problems?, Stacy Fussell Thorne

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In the war game Diplomacy, players win by gaining control of Europe. In order to win, however, players must successfully negotiate with other players, make alliances with them, and sometimes gain the support of their ally's military resources, their armies or fleets. In the rules of the game, Diplomacy is described as

a game of negotiations, alliances, promises kept, and promises broken. In order to survive, a player needs help from others. In order to win the game, a player must eventually stand alone. Knowing whom to trust, when to trust them, what to promise, and when …

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson Jan 2003

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson

Librarian Publications

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. If such a task were to be undertaken, a new storage …

The Springback: Account Book Binding, Peter D. Verheyen, Donia Conn Jan 2003

The Springback: Account Book Binding, Peter D. Verheyen, Donia Conn

Librarian Publications

These instructions for making a springback account book are derived from my notes as an apprentice at the Kunstbuchbinderei Klein, with adaptations over time. While my training is in the German tradition, the steps outlined should not be radically different from the English tradition. Although the technique was originally patented in Great Britain in 1799 by John and Joseph Williams,) the authors have found very few descriptions of this method in contemporary English language texts. Alex J. Vaughan describes the technique with great detail in Section II, 'Stationery Binding' of Modern Bookbinding. There is also an historical mention in Bernard …

Dalí'S Musical Roundabouts, Antoni Pizà Jan 2003

Dalí'S Musical Roundabouts, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Those familiar with Salvador Dalí's contradictory nature as well as his propensity to mask his own thoughts will not be surprised to learn that, publicly, he despised music, though obviously that was not the case at all. In fact, many witnesses say – Amanda Lear, for one – he was actually quite musical and, time and again, he could be caught off guard singing or humming Catalan folk songs, sardanas, zarzuelas, and cuplés – all folksy, kitschy, and, by most accounts, tacky popular songs. Dalí, however, went to a great length to conceal this spontaneous love for the simple, uncomplicated …

Art In The Early Church: The Empty Cross And Images Of Christ, Catherine Combier-Donovan Jan 2003

Art In The Early Church: The Empty Cross And Images Of Christ, Catherine Combier-Donovan

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The cross or the crucifix -which is older? Convinced that the representation and veneration of the cross itself is an older, more authentic and venerable tradition than that of the crucifix, my goal was to trace the evolution of the image of the cross in the context of early Christian art: the first examples of the cross, the early images of Christ, and the first depictions of Christ on the cross, This essay considers the historical, social, and theological contexts for such images, and several theories to explain why the cross was for so long represented without Christ upon it …

Self-Image, Tammy Jean Wymer Jan 2003

Self-Image, Tammy Jean Wymer

Theses and Dissertations

Many current media images of women have underlying messages that affect our psyche in a negative way, whether or not we are aware. These images convey an unrealistic, distorted view of ideals and perfection, which create an unattainable model to live up to. As women, we should be cherishing our uniqueness, but, rather than celebrating and accepting ourselves, we are taught to judge and conceal. This project seeks to address inner beauty as a reflection of our energy, vitality, wisdom and the mental, as well as emotional, engagement in our lives. The terms perfection and imperfection will be redefined and …

Image And Illustration In Jean Fouquet's "Grandes Chroniques De France", Erik Inglis Jan 2003

Image And Illustration In Jean Fouquet's "Grandes Chroniques De France", Erik Inglis

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This article studies the miniatures that Jean Fouquet painted for a mid-fifteenth-century copy of the Grandes Chroniques de France. I argue that the contextual interpretation of illuminated historical manuscripts must begin by determining how specific events were selected for illustration. In Fouquet's Grandes Chroniques, the choice of subjects is more closely related to the preexisting structure of the text than to the manuscript's immediate political context, indicating that his pictures were more important as images than as illustrations of specific events. Having distinguished image from illustration, I then discuss how his images contributed to the book's persuasive visual appeal, mining …

Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers Dec 2002

Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

As the first approaching life-sized, freestanding, sensuous, bronze nude since Antiquity, Donatello’s bronze David is a critical monument of the Italian Renaissance. It is also one of the most enigmatic. David is nude, but not completely unclothed, wearing a feminine-looking hat and knee-high boots. David holds a rock and a sword, while standing suggestively, on the head of Goliath. He stands in a relaxed contrapposto stance. His left hand, held to his hip, holds a stone. His right hand is resting on an oversized sword, which points downward to the helmet of Goliath, between the feet of David. As Zuraw …

View From The Gallery, Geetha Mehra

IIMB Management Review

To develop a successful business in art, one has to rely a lot on intuition. Unlike other businesses, there is no data available, no rules to go by, and the product itself is, in a sense, intangible. Each work of art is unique, with a unique value. Stepping into this arena in the mid 80s, intrepid artrepreneur Geetha Mehra set up the Sakshi Gallery in Chennai to provide a space for Indian artists to exhibit their work to the public, and to further the cause of contemporary art in India. Learning and growing in the business, Ms Mehra went from …
