This study aimed to estimate knee kinetics in recreational runners during treadmill running based on seven IMUs and pressure insoles using convolutional neural networks (CNN) with two input segmentations. Ground-truth knee moments of 19 runners during sloped and level treadmill running were calculated by conventional lab-based methods. We trained two CNNs on (1) step-segmented and (2) continuously windowed inputs and investigated differences in their joint moment estimations to ground-truth calculations. For both input segmentations, the predictions errors (nRMSE) were below 0.10 and 0.25 for the sagittal and non-sagittal planes, respectively. The continuous inputs led to a slightly decreased accuracy during …

The aims of this study were i) to determine if performing regression models with high-risk datasets compared to full datasets could help to understand better which biomechanical variables could really be considered ‘at-risk’ and/or ‘better for performance’ and ii) to determine the effect of anticipation on ‘at-risk’ biomechanical variables. Basketball players (n=33) completed 6 changes of direction in anticipated or unanticipated conditions. Kinematics, dynamics and performance were measured with motion capture and force plates. A lower number of predictors were found for high-risk dataset compared to full dataset. Hip adduction and trunk lateral lean could be both considered ‘at-risk’ and …

Speed-Dependent Increase In Lumbar Lordosis Is Inconsistent With Speed-Independent Pelvic Tilt During Treadmill Running, Tempei Tominaga, Yoshiki Tasaki, Natsuki Sado
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Lumbar lordosis (LL) is considered as an important factor of low back pain. Although LL during running (dynamic LL) and anterior pelvic tilt (APT) are thought to increase simultaneously, this relationship has not been examined when running speed is changed. Here we show that dynamic LL increases with the increase in running speed, whereas APT is invariant during treadmill running at 4.0, 5.5, 7.0 and 8.5 m/s in 18 male collegiate athletes. The speed-dependent increase in dynamic LL suggests that runners and coaches should be cautious that greater mechanical load on the lumbar spine might occur during faster running. The …

The Relationships Of Functional Mobility With Muscle Strength And Proprioception Among Older Adults, Qi Wang Miss, Yanhao Liu, Qipeng Song, Dewei Mao, Xinrui Zhang
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Functional mobility impairment is the most common risk factor for falls among older adults, with three potential factors (muscle strength, tactile sensation, and proprioception) being responsible for their functional mobility. This study aims to compare functional mobility and the three factors, and investigate their relationships among older adults of different ages. One hundred sixty-six participants were categorized into younger (YG), middle (MG), or older (OG) aged groups. The OG has worse functional mobility, muscle strength, tactile sensation, and proprioception than YG and MG. In the YG and MG groups, both proprioception and muscle strength showed correlations with functional mobility. In …

Associations Between Strength And Power With Throwing Performance In High Level Male And Female Javelin Throwers, Miika Köykkä, Johanna K. Ihalainen, Anssi Saari, Benjamin Waller, Neil J. Cronin
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated the associations between strength and power measures and estimated javelin throwing performance. Thirteen male (personal best: 77.0 ± 5.7 m) and thirteen female (55.8 ± 5.8 m) javelin throwers underwent various lower and upper body power and strength tests, along with a javelin throwing test. Associations with throwing performance were observed for lower body power measures in males and upper and lower body maximal strength in females, suggesting sex-specific differences in important physical characteristics for throwing.

On-Court Mechanical Work Measured Using Markerless Motion Capture Is Associated With Acute Fatigue In Tennis, Julie Emmerson, Laurie Needham, Murray Evans, Sean Williams, Steffi Colyer
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Measurement of mechanical work with a markerless motion capture system was assessed for the application of training ‘load’ monitoring. Four tennis players completed an on-court fatiguing protocol interspersed with sprint tests, with relationships between reduction in sprint velocity and internal and external mechanical work done tested. Repeated measures correlations for total and external mechanical work, and external mechanical work estimated from centre of mass proxies (pelvis and mid-hip) were comparable and ranged from -0.89 to -0.86. Whilst the calculated work done varied greatly between the methods (~42% for pelvis), all showed a strong relationship with fatigue and could provide insight …

Effects Of Half-Marathon Running On Quadriceps And Hamstring Torque, Wenjin Wang, Marvin Zedler, Yutong Jing, Wolfgang Potthast
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aims to investigate changes in concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring torque following half-marathon running on the treadmill. Thirty-eight recreational runners participated in this study. Isokinetic dynamometry measured torque before, 5 minutes, 24 and 48 hours after completing half-marathon. A significant decrease in concentric and eccentric torque were observed at 5 minutes after a half-marathon for both hamstrings (all p < 0.001) and quadriceps (all p < 0.001), with recovery evident within 24 hours. However, 48 hours after the half-marathon, individuals exhibited increased concentric hamstrings torque (p=0.034) and eccentric quadriceps (p=0.002) compared to the baseline. Running a half-marathon may increase the risk of running injuries. However, these effect were transient, with torque levels returning to baseline within 24 hours.

Developing A New Performance Measure To Quantify The Difference Between Actual And Predicted On-Water Rowing Performance, Sam Jones, Chris Bailey, Dave Thomas, Mark G. E. White, Paul Rees, Huw D. Summers, Neil E. Bezodis
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study developed a measure of on-water rowing performance (on-water delta) that quantifies the difference between actual on-water performance and on-water performance as predicted from ergometer performance. Maximal effort 2000 m ergometer and on-water times (n = 340) were collected from 162 athletes over a 16-year period. A linear mixed model was fitted to the dataset to enable predictions of on-water performance from ergometer performance whilst accounting for repeated measures and other factors such as potential environmental effects. On-water delta was defined as a model residual and ranged from -32.8 s (overperformed) to 51.1 s (underperformed). On-water …

The Influence Of Lower Limb Muscle Pre-Activation On Knee Joint Dynamic Control During A Single-Leg Landing Task In Badminton, Pingping Zhu, Yanjia Xu Wang, Yanjia Xu, Zhe Hu
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Purpose: Lower limb neuromuscular strategies impact knee biomechanics, crucial for ACL injury prevention. Yet, the link between them remains unclear. In our randomized trial with 34 badminton players, we examined lower limb muscle preactivity during single-leg landings. Findings revealed that increased rectus femoris preactivation correlated with heightened knee valgus angle. Moreover, higher lateral hamstring/quadriceps co-contraction ratios predicted increased knee extension moments. These outcomes suggest potential benefits in ACL injury prevention through reduced quadriceps pre-activation and optimal lateral hamstring/quadriceps co-contraction ratios. Understanding these relationships aids in developing targeted prevention strategies for anterior cruciate knee injuries.

The purpose of this study was to analyze biomechanical differences between footwear conditions during acceleration and sprinting at maximum speed. Competitive sprinters (n=17) completed 60-m sprints barefoot, in running shoes, and in spiked sprint shoes in a randomized order. Fifty-four force plates (1000 Hz) obtained ground reaction forces over 50 m. Main effects between phases were found in all nine spatiotemporal and kinetic variables (p<0.001, partial eta2≥0.728). Differences in braking and propulsive forces and impulses between footwear conditions seemed larger during acceleration (p<0.001, partial eta2=0.38–0.57) than at maximum speed (p<0.15, partial eta2=0.11–0.38). The findings underlined the importance of kinetic analysis …0.15,>0.001,>0.001,>

The Impact Of Limb Symmetry On Stroke-To-Stroke Movement Variability In Para-Swimmers During An Adapted Aerobic Step Test, Matthew Slopecki, Julien Clément, Mathieu Charbonneau, Julie N. Côté
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The study purpose was to measure effects of anthropometric limb characteristics on fatigue-related changes in stroke-to-stroke motor variability (MV) of trunk mediolateral (ML) acceleration. Six Paralympic swimmers performed an in-water, fatiguing, freestyle aerobic test consisting of 5 steps of 200m (n = 4); 150m (n = 1) or 100m (n = 1) with a sacrum worn inertial measurement unit. Upper-limb segment lengths were measured, and symmetry indices (LSI) were calculated. Sample entropy (SampEn) and fractal dimension (FD) were calculated on ML acceleration. Fatigue was confirmed with increased RPE (p < 0.01). ANOVA fatigue response models of SampEn and FD improved with LSI as a covariate (p < 0.01), showing that symmetry indices affected individual responses to fatigue. Coaches should consider anthropometric symmetry when designing para-swimming training plans.
The Influence Of Stature On Human Vertical Jumping Performance, Sam Allen
The Influence Of Stature On Human Vertical Jumping Performance, Sam Allen
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Humans become relatively weaker as they increase in size. Despite this, simulations have shown that increased size is of benefit in vertical jumping when isometric scaling is employed due to beneficial effects on the shortening velocity of muscles. Human body mass scales allometrically with the square of stature and it is shown that, assuming constant body composition, strength scales as a function of stature and independently of width and depth. A four-segment planar torque-driven computer model was used to simulate squat jump performance. Body dimensions were scaled allometrically to stature ±3 standard deviations from the mean stature of a young …

Intra- And Inter-Subject Variability In A Realistic, Non-Standardized Exergaming Scenario, Michelle C. Haas, Anna Lisa Martin-Niedecken, Larissa Wild, Leander Schneeberger, Eveline S. Graf
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to assess the variability of lower extremity mechanics related to biomechanical risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament injury. Lower body kinematics were measured in healthy subjects in a realistic, non-standardized exergaming scenario. Variability in a jump exercise were described with the coefficient of variation and leg symmetry was assessed using Welch’s t-test. Inter-subject variability was moderate-high and intra-subject variability was low-moderate in all variables, while leg symmetry differed significantly for knee internal rotation and hip extension (p < .001), but not in the knee valgus. Athletes showing high risk knee biomechanics and high movement variability need clear instructions to prevent more extreme angles. Athletes showing low movement variability need proper recovery periods to avoid ACL fatigue failure.

Landing Biomechanical Characteristics Of Adolescent Athletes With Anterior Knee Pain Compared To Healthy Controls, Sunghe Ha, Inje Lee
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Anterior knee pain (AKP) is defined as chronic peripatellar pain. It may be caused by repetitive the knee extensor mechanism, which may predispose adolescent athletes to AKP due to the incomplete maturation. To reduce risk of AKP, we should understand landing biomechanics in adolescent athletes with AKP. Therefore, we aimed to identify landing biomechanical characteristics of the AKP group compared to the control group. We collected data on joint angles, moments, and power, ground reaction forces, and vertical stiffness during landing. We used Mann-Whitney U test and ensemble curve analyses to compare outcome variables between the AKP and control groups. …

Our study aimed to explore ACL injury risk factors in females versus males during badminton single-leg landings. Sixteen players (8 male, 8 female) participated, with lower limb kinematics, ground reaction forces, and muscle activity measured using motion capture, force plates, and electromyography (EMG). Independent samples t-test analyzed gender differences in leg kinematics, mean normalized leg muscle activation (MVC%), and muscle co-contraction post-landing. Females, compared to males, exhibited higher rectus femoris, medial hamstring, and gastrocnemius muscle activity during the post-landing phase. Additionally, males had a higher co-contraction ratio in the medial and lateral gastrocnemius than females. Female badminton players' neuromuscular control …

This pilot study examines the impact of varied cognitive loads on lower limb biomechanics during landing tasks. Ten male athletes performed a novel motor-cognitive assessment and then a landing task in three conditions with different cognitive loads. Findings suggest cognitive conditions may affect GRF, joint kinematics, and kinetics. Specifically, unanticipated tasks may elevate GRF, while altered hip abduction indicates adjustments in base support. Hip and knee moments vary based on cognitive conditions, emphasizing their influence on load absorption. Additionally, divided attention correlates with increased knee abduction moment, underscoring its relevance in managing potentially harmful sports movements. These results reinforce prior …

This study aimed to provide further insights into unclear aspects in the existing literature concerning the association between ACL injury kinematic risk factors and jump performance, as they might conflict. Fifty-four physically active females executed drop jumps with a maximal CMJ. A motion capture system provided knee and hip kinematics. Jump height, contact time, reactive strength index, initial speed, and power were obtained using a contact platform. Spearman’s correlations between first and second landing kinematics and jump indicators were evaluated. The results showed how highly performing participants were also able to land safely, plausibly reducing ACL injury risk factors. These …

The aim of this study was to assess the agreement and reliability of the spatiotemporal gait metrics measured by the Stride Smart system in the AlterG treadmill compared to the Xsens motion capture system. 17 healthy adults walked on an AlterG treadmill at 3km/h and 4 km/h at 4 bodyweight conditions (100, 75, 50, 25%) while wearing Xsens sensors, repeating this session 7.0 ± 0.7 days later. Gait metrics were calculated using the Xsens motion cloud software, and by the treadmill using the Stride Smart system. Agreement and between-session reliability for the Stride Smart Gait metrics were assessed. Stride Smart …

This study aimed to create a digital biomarker for assessing the severity of Parkinson's disease (PD) using multimodal features from 50 PD patients and 50 healthy controls. They underwent clinical tests, gait analysis using a motion capture system, postural and functional evaluations, and lifestyle questionnaires. These multimodal features underwent dimensionality reduction techniques such as logistic regression and principal component analysis to identify PD severity using the MDS-UPDRS total score. The results developed six models using machine learning algorithms (Linear Regression and Random Forest), with Model 1 performing the best; spatiotemporal variables from gait analysis were crucial in identifying PD severity. …

The measurement of throwing pole forces in seated shot put has not been reported previously in the research literature, forming a considerable gap in the understanding of seated throwing. In this research, two methods for pole force measurement are presented: a deflection-based and a direct load-sensing method. From the comparison of each method, the measurement of pole forces without an instrumented pole is found to be feasible (RMSE
