Distal Joint Kinetics Are Associated With Shot Put Performance, Shogo Hashimoto, Tempei Tominaga, Keigo Ohyama Byun, Natsuki Sado
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Shot put motion exhibits upper-limb “push type proximal-to-distal sequence”, which is a common motor task with the lower limb. In the lower limb, proximal muscle function is associated with motor performance. Here we show the strong correlation of the wrist torque and power with the flight distance in the motion of 13 male shot putters. For the shoulder, only the peak torque correlated with the flight distance, whereas for the elbow, flexion torque was exerted, and both torque and power did not correlate with the flight distance. We suggest that it is important for shot putters to strengthen both the …

Alterations In Muscle Synergies In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis During Level- And Downhill Walking, Lasse Hansen, Jana Rogoschin, Igor Komnik, Wolfgang Potthast
ISBS Proceedings Archive
In this study, the effects of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) on muscle synergy composition during locomotion tasks were investigated. Utilizing non-negative matrix factorization on surface electromyography data from 37 participants, analyses of muscle synergies in both level walking and ramp descent in KOA patients and age-matched controls were conducted. It could be shown that KOA affects muscle synergies in the affected limb during level walking, where a merge of synergies during late swing and early stance phases is observed. A similar effect was observed in ramp descent for the affected and unaffected limb. In this study, the impact of KOA on …

This study used new insole pressure technology to examine how movement strategies during approach and exit phases affect change of direction (COD) times. Participants (n=26) wore NURVV smart insoles and performed 90˚ cuts off each leg (dominant [Dom] and non-dominant [ND]). Ground contact time (GCT), cadence, centre of pressure, and return to linear sprinting metrics were analysed for four steps about the cut-step. Faster cadence and a more forefoot strike pattern predicted 58% of the variance in Dom side COD ability. ND COD ability was predicted by a faster cadence immediately post-cut and a quicker GCT two steps before the …

Gait Event Detection During Walking Using Deep Learning And Thigh-Worn Accelerometry, Claas Lendt, Tom Stewart
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Mobility and gait are important indicators of human health. However, measuring them outside of a laboratory setting can be challenging. To measure human physical behaviour in free-living conditions, thigh-worn accelerometers and data-driven algorithms are commonly used. This study explores a deep learning approach that utilises data from a single thigh-worn accelerometer. A temporal convolutional network was trained to predict gait events in healthy adults during various walking conditions. The model demonstrated a high level of detection accuracy (F1 score ≥ 99%) and good time agreement for both gait events, with the 95% limits of agreement being -0.04s and 0.04s. …

Relationship Between Pre-Delivery Stride And Fast Bowling Performance In Cricket, Hamish G. Bull, Peter Alway, Mark A. King
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aimed to investigate fast bowler biomechanics during the pre-delivery stride and how they associate with variables previously linked with faster ball release speeds. Kinematic bowling data was collected from 29 elite fast bowlers using 3D motion capture. Pre-delivery stride technique showed multiple significant associations with performance-related variables: more vertical take-off angles correlated with slower run-up velocity; and a larger downward landing velocity associated with less thoracolumbar flexion during the bowling action. Shallower pre-delivery stride take-off angles might therefore be recommended but physical capacity of the bowler should be considered due to the undesirable association between faster run-up velocity …

Cam morphology was defined by an average distance deviation (ADD) between a healthy fit onto the proximal femur and the segmented proximal femur at the anterolateral head-neck junction and categorized into four groups. Neck-shaft angle, femoral anteversion, neck length and femur length described the femur geometry. Neck-shaft angle demonstrated a significant effect on the ADD. Additionally, a novel method for automatically characterizing femur morphology was developed, offering potential applications in diagnosing cam …

The study investigated body inclination angle and motion variation for skilled dancers in the triple pirouette. Eleven skilled female ballet dancers were asked to perform the triple pirouette. A three-dimensional motion capture system was used to calculate the body inclination angle and direction angles of the body segment vectors for evaluating the motion variation of the body segments. Maintaining a small body inclination angle during the triple pirouette, they showed a high commonality of the segment motions in the left shank and left thigh of the support leg as well as the upper and lower torso, while a high individuality …

The purpose of this study was to compare the punt kicking motions for different kicking distances in the college and professional rugby players. Three-dimensional coordinate data were collected from nine college rugby players and six professional players. They were asked to performed three different punt kicks aiming at 35-m, 50-m and maximum (MAX) kicking distances. The approach angle varied with the kick distance in both groups. For the 35-m kick, all players used a straight approach heading to kicking direction. For the 50-m and MAX kicks, they approached to the ball diagonally, which helped to increase the hip rotation range …
