The Paradox Of Visibility: Anti-Blackness, Pathologization, And The Limitations Of Canadian Criminal Law, Danardo Sanjay Jones Sep 2024

The Paradox Of Visibility: Anti-Blackness, Pathologization, And The Limitations Of Canadian Criminal Law, Danardo Sanjay Jones

PhD Dissertations

This dissertation offers a quadripartite analysis of the endemic nature of anti-Black racism within Canadian criminal law, contributing to the growing body of Canadian critical race theory (CRT) literature and advancing the field of race-conscious doctrinal work on Canadian criminal law. Each chapter engages the system along different axes: (a) the temporal, procedural axis – moving from policing to the trial process to criminal sentencing; (b) the micro to the macro axis, with chapters that range from an individual case study to an analysis of a small constellation of recent court decisions, to a more theoretical analysis of foundational theories …

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez Sep 2024

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Background: Negative internalized weight bias is associated with poorer mental health, while physical activity (PA) has been shown to have protective mental health benefits. Previous research with teens has not explored whether weight bias predicts PA participation. We evaluated weight bias internalization as a predictor of total minutes of PA, hypothesizing that greater weight bias would predict less PA participation.

Methods: One hundred participants ranging (14-18 years) have completed the study. Participants completed the Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS) and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between scores …

Distracted Driving: Identification, Contributing Factors, And Safety Countermeasures, Ahmed Sajid Hasan Sep 2024

Distracted Driving: Identification, Contributing Factors, And Safety Countermeasures, Ahmed Sajid Hasan

Theses and Dissertations

Distracted driving is a hazardous behavior responsible for 25% of all fatal traffic crashes in New Jersey. While traditional methods such as surveys, videos, and simulations have been used to identify and evaluate distracted driving events, these approaches primarily provide cross-sectional data that fails to capture the true rate of distraction on the road. This study addresses this limitation by collecting longitudinal data on distracted driving events across selected corridors in New Jersey. A data collection team continuously drove through these corridors, manually counting and video recording driver distraction events. The collected data was then analyzed to assess the significance …

Using An Anti-Racist Research Framework To Design Studies Of Oral Human Papillomavirus And Oropharyngeal Cancer In San Francisco: Rationale And Protocol For The Health Equity And Oral Health In People Living With Hiv (Heohp) Qualitative Study, Alessandro Villa

All Publications

Introduction: The goal of our research programme is to develop culturally appropriate patient-specific interventions for primary and secondary prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) among people living with HIV (PLWH); PLWH are at a higher risk for OPC than the general population and, as with many cancers, there are disparities in OPC health outcomes by race and ethnicity. Our study incorporates an anti-racist research framework that proposes considering racism as a foundational sociocultural system that causes ill health. We expand the framework to include biases due to gender, sexual orientation, HIV status and membership in other non-dominant groups. …

Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive

Objective Recent reports suggest that thefts of vehicles and thefts from vehicles have increased significantly over the last several years. Some police agencies have turned to mobile surveillance watchtowers to address this problem. This study examines the effectiveness of these mobile watchtowers at reducing vehicle-related thefts in Arlington, Texas.

Methods An interrupted time series analysis is used to determine whether the use of mobile watchtowers reduces the frequency of vehicle-related thefts.

Results The watchtowers are associated with a small, but significant, decrease in vehicle-related thefts. However, this effect appears to decay over time.

Conclusion Mobile watchtowers may be a viable …

Using The Web-First Tailored Design Method In A Rural Population: A Follow-Up Investigation, Betsy Garrison, Timothy S. Killian, Kelly A. Way, Zola Moon

Human Development and Family Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surveys remain a mainstay of social sciences research. The study’s primary purpose was to replicate a web-first tailored design method (TDM) in a previously surveyed rural population from a state in the mid-south of the U.S. to investigate changes in response mode (web versus paper). Most respondents did not change their response mode between the two data collection periods. They chose to complete their surveys on paper rather than the internet, even though most had access to and used the internet. The use of TDM continues to be an effective data collection strategy for a rural population. Given the emphasis …

Parents’ Perception Of Family Dynamics When Their Children Use Video Games Excessively, Joseph Benjamin Collins Sep 2024

Parents’ Perception Of Family Dynamics When Their Children Use Video Games Excessively, Joseph Benjamin Collins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Excessive video game use among youth has been linked to communication problems within families and disrupted family dynamics, notably reducing time spent with family members and reinforcing withdrawal from family activities and other recreational pursuits. While quantitative research has addressed the connection between children’s excessive video gaming and its negative impact on family dynamics, a deeper understanding of parents' perceptions remained needed. This study aimed to explore how parents described family dynamics when their children engaged in excessive gaming, using attachment theory as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 parents, and thematic analysis was used …

Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Trinidad: An Analysis Of Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Essential Workers, Bernadette Marson, Gerard A. Hutchinson Sep 2024

Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Trinidad: An Analysis Of Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Essential Workers, Bernadette Marson, Gerard A. Hutchinson

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Research shows that some essential workers, such as healthcare workers, social workers, and first responders (including police officers, paramedics, and firefighters), are at greater risk for developing both short- and long-term mental health problems (Berger et al., 2012; Canady, 2022; Grey et al., 2020; Haugen et al., 2012; Mohamed et al., 2022; Petrie et al., 2018). The most prevalent of these include anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as other social and cognitive problems—with stress causing harmful effects on mental health and potentially resulting in anxiety and depression, which may then disrupt an individual’s social relationships, family life, and work. …

Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

This research introduces a novel method for evaluating the structural features of biomolecules, utilizing our innovative Elliptical Dichroism (ED) spectrometer specifically designed for stereochemical analysis. By integrating ED spectrometry with autocorrelation (AC) analysis, we investigate the conformational characteristics of biological molecules such as amino acids, proteins, and extracellular vesicles (EVs) induced by elliptically polarized UV absorption. Our streamlined approach offers a cost-effective and portable solution with minimal sample consumption and supports multiple working modes to efficiently characterize biomolecular structures. The insight from this new approach demonstrates potential applications in using biomolecular characterization for cancer detection.

Influences Of Perceived Environment, Partner Support, And Attitudinal Familism On Physical Activity Among Mexican American Women, Neomie C. Congello

Dissertations

Healthy lifestyle behaviors such as engaging in physical activity (PA) may reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the number one cause of mortality among Mexican American women (MAW). Research findings show that MAW have low levels of leisure time PA and vary in the amount of overall PA. The influence of partner support has received little attention in studies examining predictors of PA. This cross sectional study investigated factors influencing PA among MAW aged 19 to 64 years old (mean = 39.4, SD = 11.1) who may be at increased risk for CVD based on hypertension, diabetes and obesity …

Neurodegenerative diseases, which are characterized by progressive neuronal loss and cognitive decline, are a significant concern for the aging population. Neuroinflammation, a shared characteristic of these diseases, is implicated in their pathogenesis. This article briefly summarizes the role of magnesium, an essential mineral involved in numerous enzymatic reactions and critical for neuronal bioactivity, in the context of neuroinflammation and cognitive decline. The potential neuroprotective effects of magnesium, including the mechanisms of neuroprotection by magnesium through maintaining neuronal ion homeostasis, reducing inflammation, and preventing excitotoxicity, are also described. Additionally, we discuss the impact of inadequate magnesium on neuroinflammation and its potential …
