"Not A Cookie Cutter Situation": How Neurodivergent Students Experience Group Work In Their Stem Courses, Sophia Salvatore, Claudia White, Stephen Podowitz
College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers
Background: Although group work is increasingly used in STEM courses and may lead to improved academic outcomes, there is evidence that some implementations of group work may lead to unintended barriers for certain students’ learning. Despite the growing number of neurodivergent undergraduate students, there is limited research on neurodivergent students’ experiences with group work in STEM courses. To address this knowledge gap, the current research investigated the experiences of 22 neurodivergent undergraduate students with group work in STEM courses at a range of institution types and in a variety of STEM disciplines. Participants shared experiences with in-class and out-of-class group …

Micro quasars are one of the classes of powerful Galactic particle accelerators that emit gamma rays beyond multi-TeV energies. Recently, gamma-ray emission above tens of TeV has been detected from some of these objects. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory has previously reported gamma-ray emission with a median energy of 25 TeV from the micro quasar SS 433, suggesting that gamma-ray binaries can accelerate particles to above 100 TeV inside the jets. With 2,321 days of data and better reconstruction algorithms, the HAWC observatory detected emissions above 20 TeV from two other binaries, V4641 Sagittarii and LS 5039. The V4641 …

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic low-back pain (cLBP). It is an effective treatment that has been shown to reduce pain and increase the quality of life in patients. However, the activation of pain processing regions of cLBP patients receiving SCS has not been assessed using objective, quantitative functional imaging techniques. The purpose of the present study was to compare quantitative resting-state (rs)-fMRI and arterial spin labeling (ASL) measures between SCS patients and healthy controls and to correlate clinical measures with quantitative multimodal imaging indices in pain regions.
METHODS: Multi-delay 3D …

ntroduction: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an autosomal recessive ectopic calcification disorder clinically affecting the skin, eyes, and vascular system. Most cases of PXE are caused by inactivating pathogenic variants in the ABCC6 gene encoding a hepatic transmembrane efflux transporter, which facilitates the extracellular release of ATP, the precursor of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a potent endogenous inhibitor of calcification. Pathogenic variants in GGCX, encoding γ-glutamyl carboxylase required for activation of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors as well as matrix Gla protein (MGP) and Gla-rich protein (GRP), two inhibitors of ectopic calcification, have also been reported to cause cutaneous changes like those seen …

Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, often mimics the appearance of lung cancer on fludeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The “flip-flop fungus,” due to its similar presentation on imaging modalities, can lead to false-positive results and unnecessary invasive testing. We present a 46-year-old male patient with a lung nodule and bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on an FDG-PET scan who initially presented with chest discomfort. Histoplasma infection was confirmed through Grocott's methenamine silver (GMS) stains on bronchoscopy-guided biopsy specimens. An analysis of additional cases from the literature highlighted the diverse clinical presentations and outcomes associated with this condition that may be …

The cAMP cascade is increasingly recognized to transduce physiological effects locally through spatially limited cAMP gradients. However, little is known about how adenylyl cyclase enzymes that initiate cAMP gradients are localized. Here we address this question in physiologically relevant striatal neurons and investigate how AC localization impacts downstream signaling function. We show that the major striatal AC isoforms are differentially sorted between ciliary and extraciliary domains of the plasma membrane, and that one isoform, AC9, is uniquely concentrated in endosomes. We identify key sorting determinants in the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain responsible for isoform-specific localization. We further show that AC9-containing endosomes …

Shallots from Brebes, also called Bima Brebes, have a more pungent aroma compared to other varieties. Its high demand results in increased prices in the market, leading to frequent cases of fraud wherein Bima Brebes shallots are replaced with other types of shallots. This study aimed to develop an analytical method using gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID) fingerprinting combined with chemometrics to authenticate Bima Brebes shallots. Essential oils were extracted through ultrasonic hydrodistillation, followed by organoleptic, refractive index, GC-FID fingerprinting and chemometric analysis. The yield value of the five studied shallot varieties ranged from 0.02% to 0.08% w/w. Meanwhile, the …

Located in the southern field of view of the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, the eHWC J1825-134 region is one of the most complicated gamma-ray emission sites on the galactic plane. The region contains a few PeVatron candidates that can accelerate particles up to PeV energies. Disentangling the overlapping gamma-ray emission and associating it with accelerators is crucial to understand the mechanism of cosmic-ray acceleration and gamma-ray production near the accelerators. In this talk, I will present each of the gamma-ray sources resolved in this region using 1910 days of HAWC data, including their spectra. Also, we have studied their …

Simple Summary
This study investigates racial disparities in the stage of gastric cancer at diagnosis and overall survival among different racial groups using data from the SEER database (2018–2021). The retrospective cohort study of 18,984 patients found that Hispanics are 19% more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of gastric cancer compared to non-Hispanics. Additionally, both Hispanics and Black patients showed poorer overall survival compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. The disparities are attributed to factors such as healthcare access, insurance coverage, language barriers, and preventive health service utilization. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address these …

Patients diagnosed with early-stage cancers have a substantially higher chance of survival than those with late-stage diseases. However, the option for early cancer screening is limited, with most cancer types lacking an effective screening tool. Here we report a miRNA-based blood test for multi-cancer early detection based on examination of serum microRNA microarray data from cancer patients and controls. First, a large multi-cancer training set that included 1,408 patients across 7 cancer types and 1,408 age- and gender-matched non-cancer controls was used to develop a 4-microRNA diagnostic model using 10-fold cross-validation. In three independent validation sets comprising a total of …

Autophagy, a highly conserved self-digestion process crucial for cellular homeostasis, is triggered by various environmental signals, including nutrient scarcity. The regulation of lysosomal and autophagy-related processes is pivotal to maintaining cellular homeostasis and basal metabolism. The consequences of disrupting or diminishing lysosomal and autophagy systems have been investigated; however, information on the implications of hyperactivating lysosomal and autophagy genes on homeostasis is limited. Here, we present a mechanism of transcriptional repression involving upstream stimulatory factor 2 (USF2), which inhibits lysosomal and autophagy genes under nutrient-rich conditions. We find that USF2, together with HDAC1, binds to the CLEAR motif within lysosomal …

Background: A growing body of research supports the role of the microbial communities residing in the digestive system in the host's cognitive functioning. Most of these studies have been focused on the gut microbiome and its association with clinical phenotypes in middle-aged and older adults. There is an insufficiency of population-based research exploring the association of normative cognitive functioning with the microbiome particularly with the oral microbiota.
Methods: In this study, using metagenomics and metabolomics, we characterized the salivary microbiome diversity in a sample of 51 males of Hispanic and African American origin aged 12-18 years and explored …

A growing number of college students are nontraditional learners (age 21–65) who are people of color. These students face unique challenges in a higher education system increasingly shaped by neoliberalism and the ongoing context of institutionalized racism. In Oregon, policymakers have established ambitious goals to address racial disparities in educational attainment. In this study, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 111 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) adult learners in Oregon to better understand their perspectives and experiences in regard to educational and career pathways. Participants included currently enrolled students, adults who had enrolled and left, and adults …

Prevalence Of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors In Women: Insights From The Houston Heartreach Study, Arjun R Raghuram, Matthew W Segar, Stephanie Coulter, Joseph G Rogers
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Past research has highlighted the importance of the relationship between female-specific demographics and traditional risk factors. The present analysis aimed to identify the prevalence of modifiable risk factors in women attending a community cardiovascular health screening.
METHODS: Data collected between 2011 and 2019 were obtained from the Houston HeartReach Registry. Participants were classified as having or not having each of 4 traditional cardiometabolic risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, body mass index indicating overweight or obesity, and dyslipidemia. Differences in prevalence were compared using the Pearson χ2 …

The Legal Protection For Refugees In The Sultanate Of Oman., Abdelnaser Aljahani, Saif Al Rawahi
Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal
The Sultanate of Oman is not a State party to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees (the 1951 Refugee Convention) and its 1967 Protocol, which establish refugee rights and obligations. In addition, there are no specific national laws or administrative regulations governing the right to asylum. However, the Basic Statute of the Sultanate of Oman and the Foreign Residency Law in Oman explicitly grant the right to asylum to a specific category of individuals, who are political refugees. The Basic Statute of Oman refers to political asylum briefly, while the Foreign Residency Law in Oman includes several …
