Menstrunormativity In India: Deconstructing The Concealment Imperative And The Politics Of Social Respectability, Shahida Shahida

Journal of International Women's Studies

The issue of menstrual health management (MHM) is a significant concern that has garnered attention from menstrual activists due to its profound impact on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of menstruators. This study delves into how menstruators navigate their SRH in India by examining how they adhere to traditional menstrual practices to uphold concealment norms and the politics of social respectability. The aim of the study was to analyze menstrual practices, explore the socio-cultural factors shaping the choice of menstrual products, and assess awareness regarding the toxicity of disposable menstrual products. The findings indicate that a product-centric approach to …

The ATIGA (Association of Southeast Asian Nations Trade in Goods Agreement) is an evolution of economic cooperation among ASEAN member countries which began in 1977 with the PTA (Preferential Trade Agreement) embryonic concept and was developed in the 1990s with the CEPT (Common Effective Preferential Tariff). It has driven a significant increase in intra-trade and external trade in the Southeast Asian region. The agreement was to establish a free trade zone that provides the concept of “preferences” by reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers for member countries in order to encourage regional economic growth through trade creation and trade diversion is …

Domestic Implementation Of International Law In Indonesia And Thailand, Retno Kusniati, Prasit Aekaputra, Nhonlaphat Pitpiboonpreeya

Indonesian Journal of International Law

This study aimed to examine the challenges related to domestic implementation of international law by comparing practices in Indonesia and Thailand. When both countries participated as State Parties to international treaties, this participation had legal consequences not only in the relationship with other states but also in implementing obligations under the relevant treaties through a transformation process governed by the Constitutions. Although most countries regulate the transformation of international treaties within the constitutions, Indonesia does not have the provisions. In contrast, Article 178 of the Thai Constitution provided a process for transforming international treaties into Thailand domestic law despite certain …

Book Review: Welcome The Wretched: In Defense Of The "Criminal Alien", Matthew Boaz Sep 2024

Book Review: Welcome The Wretched: In Defense Of The "Criminal Alien", Matthew Boaz

Law Faculty Popular Media

Prof. César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández has spent more than a decade writing about the intersection of criminal law and immigration law. In his most recent book, Welcome the Wretched: In Defense of the “Criminal Alien,” he offers a bold proclamation – that immigration enforcement in the United States should be untethered from the criminal legal system. Grounding his argument are two equally important assertions: (1) tying deportation to perceived criminal activity does not make the United States any safer, and (2) migrants are people, “complicated and contradictory,” but worthy of consideration beyond their greatest missteps.

Exploring Parent/Child Peri-Anesthesia Anxiety And Anesthesia Effects On Children, Ann Johnson, Alejandra Lozano, Pauline Chen Sep 2024

Exploring Parent/Child Peri-Anesthesia Anxiety And Anesthesia Effects On Children, Ann Johnson, Alejandra Lozano, Pauline Chen

2024

RESEARCH

Approximately four million children undergo procedures with anesthesia yearly. For children and parents, this can be anxiety-provoking. In extant literature, level and timing of pre-anesthesia anxiety in children are not adequately studied; associated factors are largely unknown in humans. Preparing for anesthesia and its effects may cause parental worry, and little is known about these effects on school-age children in the weeks following a procedure. The purpose of this study was to explore longitudinal peri-anesthesia factors of anxiety and behavior in children ages 7 through 12. Spanish and English-speaking dyads consented to four data collection points beginning at the …

Emergent Medication Labels In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Christine Hajovsky

2024

EBP

PICOT: In emergent situations in a pediatric ICU requiring nurses to draw up emergent doses of medication, is it safer to use color coded, pre-printed fill-in-the-dose medication labels vs. our current practice of white handwritten labels? In our pediatric ICUs, nurses use handwritten labels for emergent drug administration, which can lead to illegibility and increased risks of adverse events. This project assessed whether pre-printed, color-coded, fill-in-the-blank labels enhance nurse confidence and nurses’ perceptions of patient safety during emergent drug procedures.

Literature/Evidence: Search strategy in the CINAHL (EBSCOhost) database used MeSH headings and keywords, including English articles published within the …

High energy γ-ray observations are an essential probe of cosmic-ray acceleration mechanisms. The detection of the highest energy γ rays and the shortest timescales of variability are the key to improve our understanding of the acceleration processes and the environment of the cosmic accelerators. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) experiment is a large field-of-view, multi-TeV, γ-ray observatory continuously operating at 4100 m a.s.l. since March 2015. The HAWC observatory has an order of magnitude better sensitivity, angular resolution, and background rejection than the previous generation of water-Cherenkov arrays. The improved performance allows us to discover new TeV sources, to detect …

Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick Sep 2024

Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick

JADARA

Emotional display rules refer to the expression of culturally prescribed and socially acceptable emotions across different people and situations (Wu & Schulz, 2020). The display rules among hearing adults across several cultures are well defined and depend on the type of emotion, the individuals involved in the exchange, and the situation. Regarding Deaf culture in the United States, this minoritized group may follow unique display rules (Hosie et al., 2000), but there has been almost no research conducted with this population and the existing studies have focused on youth. The present study explores perceived emotional expressions among a sample of …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is highly suitable for large-scale survey work. The high duty time (95%), large instantaneous FoV (2 sr), and sensitivity over the 300 GeV to more than 100 TeV energy range make it ideal for creating a catalog of very high energy (VHE) sources. Over the lifetime of the HAWC observatory, 4 catalogs have been produced 3 of which were constructed utilizing the full HAWC energy range while another used a restricted (>56 TeV) range. This talk will focus on the status of the planned 4HWC (full energy range) catalog including the newly developed …

Galactic PeVatrons are astrophysical sources accelerating particles up to a few PeV (∼1015 eV) energies. The primary signature of 100 TeV γ rays may come from PeV protons or multihundred TeV (not PeV) electrons. The search for PeVatrons has been one of the key science topics for VERITAS and HAWC. In 2021, LHAASO detected 14 steady γ-ray sources with photon energies above 100 TeV, up to 1.4 PeV. This provides a clear list of PeVatron candidates for further study with VERITAS and HAWC. Most of these sources contain possible source associations, such as supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and …

Understanding the complete nature of Galactic sources that accelerate cosmic rays up to 1015 eV energy (Galactic PeVatrons) is still an unsolved problem in high-energy astrophysics. Although supernova remnants have long been considered as the best candidates for Galactic PeVatrons, a clear association of SNRs with PeVatrons needs further exploration. Recently, the LHAASO collaboration published its first catalog of 90 very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources, and a few of them have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths. Here, we will present morphology and spectral analysis of one such unassociated source LHAASO J2108+5157 using VERITAS and HAWC data.

Investigating The Role Of Mental Imagery Use In The Assessment Of Anhedonia, Julie L Ji, Marcella L Woud, Angela Rölver, Lies Notebaert, Jemma Todd, Patrick J F Clarke, Frances Meeten, Jürgen Margraf, Simon E Blackwell

School of Psychology

Anhedonia, or a deficit in the liking, wanting, and seeking of rewards, is typically assessed via self-reported "in-the-moment" emotional and motivational responses to reward stimuli and activities. Given that mental imagery is known to evoke emotion and motivational responses, we conducted two studies to investigate the relationship between mental imagery use and self-reported anhedonia. Using a novel Reward Response Scale (adapted from the Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale, DARS; Rizvi et al., 2015) modified to assess deliberate and spontaneous mental imagery use, Study 1 ( N  = 394) compared uninstructed and instructed mental imagery use, and Study 2 ( N  = …

We characterize the performance of our computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) – a space-based observatory for MeV to TeV gamma-ray astronomy – and its smaller, balloon-borne prototype, the Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT), whose scientific focus will be the detection of MeV transients. These instruments observe scintillation light from multiple Compton scattering and photoabsorption of gamma-ray photons across a series of CsI detector layers. We infer the incident angle of each photon's first scattering to localize its source direction to a Compton ring about the vector defined by its …

Background: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is an episodic, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by fluctuations in mood state and energy. It affects more than 1% of the world’s population. BPAD causes cognitive and functional impairment and raised mortality, particularly death by suicide. At present, although alternative therapies are not the first-line treatment of mood disorders, there is emerging evidence showing that such treatments are effective. Objective: The objective of this review is to synthesize existing research evidence and literature to determine the usefulness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of manic and depressive episodes of BPAD. Materials and Methods: Two authors …
