The Prescribing Of Gender, A Scope On The Societal Ideologies Showcased Within Le Roman De Silence, Derrian Fernandez May 2025

The Prescribing Of Gender, A Scope On The Societal Ideologies Showcased Within Le Roman De Silence, Derrian Fernandez

Master's Theses

Culture is constantly evolving, its ideologies cementing themselves within our minds, shaping how we as a society guide ourselves through living in such. Social class, religion, gender, all are forms of identity that have a place, and a certain understanding and standing within our culture and society. Through this understanding of ourselves, we are defined, creating multiple forms of distinct expression to help differentiate our place further. A pope is expected to wear a certain attire just as a bride is expected to. The same ideology trickles down, creating demarcations of attire that subsequently ingrain themselves into our culture and …

Transgressive Fiction And The Problem Of Negative Affect: A Case Study Of Samuel Delany’S Hogg, Brian Thornton May 2025

Transgressive Fiction And The Problem Of Negative Affect: A Case Study Of Samuel Delany’S Hogg, Brian Thornton

Master's Theses

Samuel Delany began drafting Hogg in March of 1969 and worked on it intermittently before completing the novel in October of 1973.1 Yet Hogg remained unpublished until 1995 before finally seeing the light of day “during the ‘transgressive turn’ in American literature” (Mitchell 1). As such, the novel is historically situated along what Jonathan Mitchell calls a “dual temporality,” which “allows the novel to be located as an intervention in two key moments in America’s LGBT+ history: first, the developments in identity politics coming out of the socio-political cultural shifts of the 1960s; and, second, the post-AIDS awareness 1990s”.

Play The Game Until You Can Change It, Code-Switching Through The Lens Of Black Mid-Level Administrators, Kale W. Walker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study explores the multifaceted phenomenon of code-switching, defined as the practice of alternating between languages, dialects, or language varieties within conversations. It posits that code-switching transcends mere linguistic behavior, functioning as a strategic tool for social survival and the enhancement of social capital. The study examines how individuals utilize code-switching to navigate complex social landscapes, negotiate identities, and pursue specific social and professional objectives; thereby contributing to their social capital—the network of relationships and resources that facilitate access to opportunities and influence. The research highlights the broader implications of code-switching on social structures and power dynamics, illustrating how …

Challenges Of The Novice Elementary Principal: A Framework For Elementary Principal Onboarding, Casey Stansifer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative, multisite phenomenological study has two main foci. First, the study seeks to understand the unanticipated pain points each participant felt in the first two years of his or her principalship. The study inquires not into what the novice principals thought would hurt prior to their first two years on the job, but rather what they could not see coming even after having spent a considerable amount of time focusing on the principalship in their principal preparation programs. Second, the study seeks to understand what supports would be helpful to the novice principal in addressing these …

The Anorexigenic Peptide Nesfatin-1 Dampens The B Cell Response To Receptor-Mediated Stimulation Through Inhibition Of Nf-Jb Signaling, Tara L. Steffen, Joshua D. Stafford, Colleen R. Bocke, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nesfatin-1, a posttranslational product of the protein encoded by the nucleobindin 2 gene (NUCB2), was functionally identified as an appetite regulatory molecule in rat hypothalamic nuclei. In the years following the discovery, those findings have been corroborated and expanded upon, and we now know that nesfatin-1 is expressed throughout peripheral tissues and exerts physiological effects beyond feeding control. Literature indicates that adipose tissue is one of the peripheral sources of NUCB2/nesfatin-1, and in this setting, it has anti-inflammatory effects that have recently been implicated in regulating chronic inflammation associated with diet-induced obesity. Currently, there are gaps in our understanding of …

From Corporate Complicity To Peace: Restorative Justice For Mining Corporations In Kivu's Coltan Sector, Cimalamungo Bahizire E Didier May 2025

From Corporate Complicity To Peace: Restorative Justice For Mining Corporations In Kivu's Coltan Sector, Cimalamungo Bahizire E Didier

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This thesis examines how mining corporations in DR Congo's coltan sector can turn from perpetrators of structural violence to agents of sustainable peace. Research identifies seven forms of corporate complicity in violence: economic exploitation, financial misconduct, political interference, environmental degradation, disingenuous peace initiatives, worker rights violations, and supply chain manipulation.

These practices create “distant markets causing distant harms” and constitute "sinful structures" systematically harming vulnerable people. Restorative Justice offers a transformative framework for addressing these injustices. Drawing from Desmond Tutu's work, the research establishes a three-dimensional model for corporate conversion: individual moral awakening among leaders, communal engagement fostering collective responsibility, …

Elementary Writing Intervention Implementation Status, Thomas John Petré Wills May 2025

Elementary Writing Intervention Implementation Status, Thomas John Petré Wills

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite decades of focus, U.S. students' writing abilities remain below grade-level expectations, highlighting persistent gaps in instructional support and systemic challenges within public education. Barriers include limited instructional time, inadequate teacher preparation in evidence-based writing practices, insufficient resources, and a lack of structured interventions for struggling writers (Applebee & Langer, 2011; National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2012). This study employed survey methodology to examine how teacher self-efficacy, classroom supports, and systems-level factors such as response to intervention (RTI) practices influence the implementation of evidence-based writing instruction in grades two through four. A national sample of elementary school teachers completed …

Feral And Free: The Queering Of Motherhood In Rachel Yoder’S Nightbitch, Cassandra Haskell May 2025

Feral And Free: The Queering Of Motherhood In Rachel Yoder’S Nightbitch, Cassandra Haskell

Master's Theses

This thesis explores motherhood from a perspective that seeks to inform and challenge the patriarchal definitions of motherhood in order to simultaneously confront its restrictions and create new meanings from its institutionalized definition. The main text that this thesis analyzes is the 2021 novel Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder, as well as the 2024 film of the same name, critiquing how it successfully queers motherhood by questioning, challenging, and defying the impractical expectations placed upon mothers by society. Some secondary scholars whose works that I utilize to support my argument are authors such as Audre Lorde, Jessica Calarco, Adrienne Rich and …

The Struggles For Equality And Democracy In Modern China: Which Was More Influential?, Angelina K. Lambros May 2025

The Struggles For Equality And Democracy In Modern China: Which Was More Influential?, Angelina K. Lambros

Publications and Research

This paper analyzes the struggles for democracy and equality in modern China, from the fall of the Qing Dynasty to the Tiananmen Square movement. It considers which struggle was more influential, evaluating the recurring theme of a fight for democracy in China since the New Culture Movement, and a quest for social and economic equality that Mao and the Chinese Communist Party committed themselves to. Ultimately, the paper concludes that the struggle for democratic norms and institutions was always present among the Chinese people, but it did not succeed in pushing the government or the Party to adopt political reforms. …

A Study On The Self-Reported Experience Of Acute Urinary Catheterization In Children And Adolescents, Lora Bear, Chris K. Fan, Heather S. Jung, Margret Kamel, Sandeep Riar

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2025

Background: Urinary catheterization, a common pediatric procedure, requires the use of topical anesthesia but some studies suggest no benefit of lidocaine gel over non-anesthetic gel. It is challenging to counsel patients about this procedure as the experience of catheterization in the literature is based on observation in pre-verbal and nonverbal children rather than self-report.

Design/Methods: We included 8- to 21-year-old subjects undergoing urinary catheterization in the Emergency room or inpatient setting and used a written survey to record their experience. The survey included questions with a 5-point Likert scale. Procedural pain was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS-11), where …

Cracking The Gender Code: Quantitative Insights Into Women's Code-Switching Strategies In K-12 Educational Leadership, Morgan Walker May 2025

Cracking The Gender Code: Quantitative Insights Into Women's Code-Switching Strategies In K-12 Educational Leadership, Morgan Walker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women in K–12 education find themselves in the majority in the classroom but in the minority in administration positions. Social conditioning has led many to believe that men's characteristics more naturally align with strong leadership. Because of this discrepancy, women find the need to act in an inauthentic way to be perceived as more confident and capable leaders. Code-switching is defined as a transactional social tool utilized in instances of an imbalance of power and in the development of relations and practices that help members of a subordinate group cope with or resist the condition of subordination (Heller, 2020). This …

Queer X Trans Memoir: In Sight Of An Embodied History, Rhyan Warmerdam May 2025

Queer X Trans Memoir: In Sight Of An Embodied History, Rhyan Warmerdam

English (MA) Theses

Are queer and trans identities innate or constructed? What constitutes a queer or trans identity? What prompts a person to identify with a particular queer or trans identity category? Prominent queer theorist Judith Butler contends that “There is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender; that identity is performatively constituted” (Butler, Gender Trouble 34). However, many scholars have claimed that Butler’s theory is “not compatible with lived experience” (McCann & Monaghan 134). This project utilizes the genre of memoir to gain insight into lived experiences to put this theory to the test. Through a mini historical archive of twelve …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Epidural anesthesia is a cornerstone of perioperative pain management, offering effective analgesia and reduced opioid dependency. However, traditional landmark-based epidural placement (EP) techniques often result in variable first-pass success rates (FPSR) and increased risks of complications. Ultrasound-guided (USG) EP has emerged as an alternative, providing real-time anatomical visualization to improve accuracy and safety. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on the comparative efficacy of USG EP and conventional techniques in adult patients undergoing perioperative epidural anesthesia.

Methods

This review commenced September 2023 and included full-access, peer-reviewed journal articles published in English between 2014-2023. Databases searched included PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, …

Variable Selection In Mixture Cure Models Using Elastic Net Penalty: Application To Covid-19 Data, Aluwani Ramalata, Akim Adekpedjou, Maseka Lesaoana May 2025

Variable Selection In Mixture Cure Models Using Elastic Net Penalty: Application To Covid-19 Data, Aluwani Ramalata, Akim Adekpedjou, Maseka Lesaoana

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In survival analysis, it is often assumed that all individuals will eventually experience the event of interest if followed long enough. However, in many real-world scenarios, a subset of individuals remains event-free indefinitely. For instance, in clinical studies, some patients never relapse and are considered cured rather than censored. Traditional survival models are inadequate for capturing this heterogeneity. Mixture cure models address this limitation by distinguishing between cured and susceptible individuals while modeling the survival of the latter. A key challenge in mixture cure modeling is selecting relevant covariates, particularly when dealing with time-varying effects. This study develops a penalized …

This research will focus on where book bans originated from, and how they have continued to happen in modern day education. Through literary analysis, this research will examine how censorship is affecting elementary education and its students. There will be a focus on New York State, and how book banning is affecting public education here.

From Great Migration To Gentrification: Heirs Property In The Urban Context, Codi Royall May 2025

From Great Migration To Gentrification: Heirs Property In The Urban Context, Codi Royall

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The current legal framework, including common law doctrine, individual state statutes, and the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act (UPHPA), fails to meet the needs of heirs property owners in urban communities. This oversight allows real estate speculators to exploit the law, accelerating gentrification, urban blight, displacement of heirs, and the erosion of generational wealth. While Thomas Mitchell’s scholarship has illuminated the challenges of heirs property, its focus on rural contexts neglects the distinct issues faced by urban heirs.

This Note addresses this gap by examining heirs property through an urban lens, emphasizing the unique historical and legal contexts of …
