Pain Management During Intrauterine Device Insertion: A Research Synthesis, Nicole D. Haradisty, Flora V. Maciel Garibay, Dylan D. Renfro May 2025

Pain Management During Intrauterine Device Insertion: A Research Synthesis, Nicole D. Haradisty, Flora V. Maciel Garibay, Dylan D. Renfro

NURS 464: Evidence-Based Nursing Capstone

The mismatch between expected and actual pain during IUD insertion can negatively impact patients' healthcare experience, satisfaction, and trust in their medical providers (Bayer et al., 2025). Inadequate pain management during IUD insertion serves as a significant barrier for individuals of reproductive age seeking this form of contraception (Bayer et al., 2025). It is essential to address the lack of universal pain management protocols during IUD insertions. Equally important is identifying effective options to manage pain while ensuring that providers set and manage patient expectations appropriately. This study aims to explore the pain experienced during IUD insertion and to identify …

Fugitive Colors, Natalie Rose Eddings May 2025

Fugitive Colors, Natalie Rose Eddings

Theses and Dissertations

My objects are meditations on intertwining themes of labor, rest, and interiority and their shadow sides—power, subjugation and the gaze. I couple materials that have millenia-long histories such as metals, glass, paper and clay with found objects and plat materials to illustrate narratives and exhume memories. Drawn from nature and technologies of land, plant stewardship and the domestic realm, I imagine my sculptures as life supporting vessels or magical enclosures.

Through sculpture, photography and printmaking, I build structures that are space of quiet to be filled with thought, healing and development. Like incubators and seed pods, my work is protective …

Testimony Before The Puerto Rico Advisory Committee To The United States Commission On Civil Rights On The Role That Race And Ethnicity Play In The Treatment Of The People Of Puerto Rico By The Federal Government, Yomaira Figueroa, Carlos Vargas-Ramos May 2025

Testimony Before The Puerto Rico Advisory Committee To The United States Commission On Civil Rights On The Role That Race And Ethnicity Play In The Treatment Of The People Of Puerto Rico By The Federal Government, Yomaira Figueroa, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

The Insular Cases, whether the narrow or more expansive canon, have structured the political relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States for more than a century. The genesis of this “third-way” of understanding and structuring the territorial relationship with the United States rested on the very ethnocentric and indeed racist ideology pervasive at the time in U.S. ruling circles, whereby there was a hierarchy of dominance and control that placed White Anglo Saxon Protestant men at the top and subordinated all other ethnic and racial groups in a gradation of subservience and exclusion.

Hiring Preferences Of Federally Recognized Tribes: Survey And Analysis, Kristen Gutierrez Livoti May 2025

Hiring Preferences Of Federally Recognized Tribes: Survey And Analysis, Kristen Gutierrez Livoti

Master of Public Administration

In the United States, there are currently 574 federally recognized Tribal nations. Both employers and applicants face challenges in the hiring process. Tribes may face challenges finding qualified applicants with the necessary skills for specific roles. A less-qualified employee may result in less impactful program outcomes, lower revenue, discouraged employees, and higher turnover rates. In addition, hiring an employee who doesn’t understand Tribal culture may result in ineffective programs, policies, and/or miscommunication. For those looking to work for a Tribal government, applicants often find challenges in that hiring preferences/policies (P&Ps) are different from Tribe to Tribe and not posted in …

ABSTRACT

Capturing the Realities of Space and Culture: An Exploration of Landscape in The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek (May 2025)

Leanna Carmela Mendiola, B.A., Texas A&M International University; Chair of Committee: Dr. Zachary Hernandez

This thesis explores Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek. Cisneros’s books explore the landscape and culture around her characters as readers piece together the experiences of women. The two novels use architectural elements to examine each book’s protagonists’ community and culture. The thesis argues that Cisneros employs space and place to underscore empowerment and the characters’ journeys …

Examining The Connections Between Gender, Identity, And Land In Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony And Rudolfo Anaya’S Bless Me, Ultima, Denise Perez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the representation of gender, identity, and land in the novels Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko and Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. To understand the role of gender in the novels, women are analyzed as sources of salvation and refuge for men. The male protagonists seek a “cure” or an understanding of themselves, and they are only able to achieve this through the nurturing of the women in their lives. This thesis also examines how the male protagonists develop their masculinity through the formation of a bond with the Earth, their homeland, and nature. In Ceremony and …

Ed.D. Dissertations

In this qualitative case study, I aimed to discern the presence of a downward trend in the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) during the COVID-19 pandemic and receive valuable qualitative feedback from Doctor of Physical Therapy program administrators concerning the effects of COVID-19. I first reviewed the available literature, followed by an examination of first-time scores via publicly available data from the Federation of State Board of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). This was followed by the development of a qualitative research methodology, which included a targeted qualitative questionnaire with Doctor of Physical Therapy program administrators within the Appalachian region to gain …

Post-Truth Rhetoric And Its Correlation To Social Media In The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, Emi Thomas May 2025

Post-Truth Rhetoric And Its Correlation To Social Media In The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, Emi Thomas

English (MA) Theses

In this study, I investigated the relationship between post-truth rhetoric and popular social media posts made by public figures during the 2024 United States presidential election. I focused on which topics and posts received the most or least engagement during the election, and theorized whether post-truth rhetoric impacted the popularity of the posts. In my results, I found that the effectiveness of post-truth rhetoric varied by the political topic it was addressing. The results of this study conclude that post-truth rhetoric is not always inherently unethical. Further, studying post-truth rhetoric for the purpose of understanding why it is used and …

Employee Engagement In The Manufacturing Industry, Aubrey A. Miller

Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

The primary objective of this paper is to analyze employee engagement in the manufacturing industry while explaining the implementation processes for putting engagement initiatives in place. Employee engagement has shown to have an impact on overall business performance and this paper examines the original introduction of engagement in a workplace setting, theories relating to employee engagement, the need for engagement in the manufacturing industry, the key drivers of employee engagement, and human resource practices. This paper also walks through my 10-week internship with Klein Tools, and the processes I took to implementing employee engagement methods at Klein Tools’ manufacturing plant …

The Relationship Between Social Media Marketing And Social Comparison On Pre-Adolescent Self-Esteem And Consumer Identity, Madison Kruse May 2025

The Relationship Between Social Media Marketing And Social Comparison On Pre-Adolescent Self-Esteem And Consumer Identity, Madison Kruse

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

The current study aimed to address gaps in the literature regarding pre-adolescent social media usage by examining whether gender, social media marketing, and social comparison predict U.S. pre-adolescent (ages 8-12) self-esteem and consumer identity. A paper survey was administered to participants (N=43) through on-site and flyer recruitment methods. The survey consisted of questions regarding pre-adolescent social media usage time and preferences, self-esteem, social comparison, and consumer identity. Scales used were adaptations of The Child Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (CRSES), The Social Media Comparison of Ability Scale (SCO-Ability), and the Consumer-Company Identification Scale. Results showed that pre-adolescents (ages 8-12) are exposed to …

Below To Beyond Human: Social Death To Ego Birth During The Black Psychedelic Experience, Angelica Medina May 2025

Below To Beyond Human: Social Death To Ego Birth During The Black Psychedelic Experience, Angelica Medina

Library Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research

Prior to the modern day green light to research psychedelics, it has been consumed for its offered experience for centuries in indigenous traditions. Research today insists that psychedelics assist greatly with self healing and self discovery. The “self-healing” in its extreme form is often labeled as “ego death”, which is defined as “surrendering to our self-subjected identity”. I will argue that the present definition for ego death is inaccurate without the integration of sociological concepts and race theory. Social death, a term coined by Orlando Patterson, suggests that black individuals aren’t accepted as fully human in our social institutions and …

Life Of Poetry: Practicing The Art Of Incarnation, Madison Wilcox May 2025

Life Of Poetry: Practicing The Art Of Incarnation, Madison Wilcox

Student Research

This creative research project explores three questions. First, what does it mean to live a life of poetry, to be a poet? Second, what is the life cycle of a poem? How does a poem begin, grow, and come to an end? And finally, could Christ be a poet? By writing a collection of poems as the core of my project, I explored the poet’s life, followed several poems through their life cycle, and reflected on the intersection between Christ’s life and ours. To add a practical dimension to the project, I researched the publishing process through books and interviews. …

Addressing Gender Disproportionality Within Michigan Special Education Programs, Katlyn Ploss May 2025

Addressing Gender Disproportionality Within Michigan Special Education Programs, Katlyn Ploss

School of Education Capstone Projects

Disproportionate representation in special education is defined as when members of a social group (race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.) have a higher likelihood of meeting eligibility criteria to receive special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). While special education disproportionality ratios for race and ethnicity are monitored through annual data reporting in accordance with federal and state policies, gender disproportionality ratios are not currently required to be monitored. According to Michigan annual data reporting, 34.96% of students receiving special education services are female, whereas male students make up 65.04% of the special education population (MI School Data, …

Exploring Black Identity In Chester Himes’ Cotton Comes To Harlem, Jowan Williams, Matthew Carlson May 2025

Exploring Black Identity In Chester Himes’ Cotton Comes To Harlem, Jowan Williams, Matthew Carlson

Undergraduate Research (Journal)

Chester Himes’ 1965 novel, Cotton Comes to Harlem, is perhaps his most celebrated and renowned work. The novel is firmly rooted in the detective fiction genre; however, Himes loads the text with so many rich racial concepts that it also functions as a political piece. His characterization of the novel’s protagonists, Detectives Coffin Ed and Grave Digger, whose identities are trapped between being officers of the law and civilians of Harlem, highlights Himes’ personal identity struggles. Likewise, the text’s villains, Rev. Deke O’Malley and Colonel Robert Calhoun, play on the nostalgic question of black identity in America, which has ties …

Representation Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Realistic Fiction For Children And Young Adults Over The Past 20 Years, Jane E. Kelley, Yun-Ju Hsiao, Brenda L. Barrio, Teresa A. Cardon, Madeline G. Joyce

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In our study, we analyzed 147 contemporary realistic fiction children’s and young adult books that feature characters with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We compared these representations with current statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For each book, we examined the character demographics, the main character, the author’s background, and representation prevalence. Our findings revealed a significant increase in the portrayal of characters with ASD over the past decade. There has also been a rise in the number of characters with ASD serving as the main protagonists in stories. We delved into the implications of gender, race, and …

How Does Contemporary Business Culture Contribute To Unethical Behavior Within The Finance Industry?, Adeline Mcquillan

Honors Projects in Finance

This thesis examines how contemporary business culture contributes to unethical behavior within the financial industry, specifically focusing on the role of leadership style, codes of conduct, competitive pressures, and regulatory environments in shaping ethical decision-making. A survey was administered to 60 participants, with 32 complete responses retained for analysis. The responses were used to examine trends across demographics and asses the relationship between the identified factors and unethical behavior. Multiple regression analysis evaluated how leadership style, competition, regulation, and codes of conduct impact unethical behavior scores. The results indicated that leadership style and regulatory environment were significantly associated with unethical …

Self-Perceived Employability And Employer Expectations Of Community College Students' Skill Gap In Industry 4.0, Cherri Wells May 2025

Self-Perceived Employability And Employer Expectations Of Community College Students' Skill Gap In Industry 4.0, Cherri Wells

Dissertations

Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, is reshaping job competencies and careers through technological integration, impacting global competitiveness, information security, and skill requirements (Jackson & Tomlinson, 2020). This shift has heightened job uncertainties, competition, and the role of institutional policymakers in aligning higher education with labor market demands (Kornelakis & Petrakaki, 2020; Tan et al., 2023 Tomlinson, 2012). However, inconsistencies persist between employer expectations and graduates’ skills, making employability, a graduate’s ability to secure and sustain employment, more crucial than ever (Fugate et al., 2004; Otache & Edopkolor, 2022).

This study aims to conduct a sequential explanatory mixed-method study by …

Exploring Healthcare Barriers: Perspectives Of Immigrants And Providers, Nazanin Zaer May 2025

Exploring Healthcare Barriers: Perspectives Of Immigrants And Providers, Nazanin Zaer

University Scholar Projects

Immigrants in the United States face significant barriers when accessing healthcare, despite healthcare being recognized as a fundamental human right. This literature review explores six key barriers: language difficulties, discrimination, cost, cultural differences, transportation issues, and challenges navigating a new healthcare system. Through the analysis of 23 peer-reviewed articles, this review identifies how each barrier affects healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for immigrant populations. Language barriers interfere with effective communication and trust, while discrimination—rooted in race, ethnicity, nationality, and immigration status—reduces the likelihood of seeking care. Financial constraints, including lack of insurance and high out-of-pocket costs, prevent timely medical intervention. …
