Revealed And Hidden Social Preferences, Saika Cer Askin
Revealed And Hidden Social Preferences, Saika Cer Askin
Behavioral and Computational Economics (MS) Theses
This study investigates individuals’ social preferences by examining the impact of group identity on economic decision-making through Dictator Game and Lying Dictator Game experiments conducted in different cultural contexts. The research compares students from Chapman University (USA) and Wuhan University (China), with each participant informed of their counterpart’s university affiliation. This design allows for the comparison of behaviors exhibited in in-group versus out-group settings. The results show that in the Dictator Game, allocation behavior remained consistent regardless of group identity. However, in the Lying Dictator Game, Wuhan participants displayed different levels of honesty depending on their counterpart’s university affiliation. A …

Ai's Impact On The Labor Market: Shaping The Present And Forecasting The Future, Emma Ryan
Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics
Artificial Intelligence is one of the fastest growing technologies, providing humans with a tool to assist them in their daily lives. While this is an advantage, there is also the downside that AI has the ability to remove routine and repetitive tasks. This paper takes a closer look at the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on the labor market and analyzes the implications of AI, both positive and negative. It elaborates on both the job opportunities present due to AI and the job displacement that may occur. A detailed survey was distributed to college students to understand their perceptions of AI …

Re-Analysis Of The Anthropogenic Effect Of The Covid-19 Global Lockdown On Night-Time Lunar Surface Temperatures, W. Schonberg, S. Haque
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A study by Durga Prasad and Ambily observed an anomalous decrease in the lunar surface temperatures during the period April–May 2020, which they then attributed to the anthropogenic effects of the COVID-19 global lockdown effect. We have re-examined their data and while the anomalous decrease in the lunar surface temperature during April–May 2020 appears in our analysis as well, so does another significant dip in early 2018. Furthermore, the decline to the minimum observed during April–May 2020 is seen to begin in 2019, that is, quite some time before the COVID-19 event that led to the global lockdown and the …

Improving Accessibility Of Anatomy Physical Study Aids, Michael Hopwood, Dorothy Berenbrok, Timberlyn Weber, Abby L. Adamczyk Mlis, Ahip
Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations
Background
Physical anatomy models are a valuable tool for student learning.1-3 The Scott Memorial Library, an academic health sciences library, houses a total of 240 anatomy models in 75 different forms (e.g., hand, arm and shoulder, whole torso, etc.) at the service desk. These models are used by students across the health professions including medicine, physician assistants, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Previously, library catalog records were the only way to find a list of available models. These catalog records were not comprehensive, did not use a consistent naming system, and did not contain images of the models. This …

Implementation Guidelines For Total Hip And Total Knee Arthroplasty To Reduce The Incidence Of Deep Vein Thrombosis And Subsequent Pulmonary Embolism, Mitchell Mccorkle
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
With patients living longer, the orthopedic sector has given rise to joint prostheses as a treatment for those experiencing osteoarthritis (OA). With the increase of these procedures, there is also an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent pulmonary embolus (PE) following these surgical procedures. The orthopedic medical community and anesthesia providers aim to decrease DVT and PE risk through multiple modalities. The anesthesia focuses on reducing DVT, and PE involves a multimodal approach to each anesthetic. Modalities used for the multimodal approach involve peripheral nerve blocks (PNB), neuraxial spinal anesthesia, early mobilization, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) …
Perceptions Of Choral Diction Curricula, Caitlyn Dixon
Perceptions Of Choral Diction Curricula, Caitlyn Dixon
Dissertations
This study proposed to provide in-depth insights into the current status of the efficacy of diction curricula, as well as to seek ways for enhancing the curricula to better support a culturally diverse musical experience. 21st century choral music encompasses languages and music from all over the world. While this diversity is crucial to the idea of a global choral community, it necessitates choral conductors to be scholars of diction, which includes creating the appropriate sounds for a given language. For a conductor to confidently perform in global languages requires skills, resources, and tools. This study examined the diction coursework …

Exploring Contributions Of Partnerships Between Employers And Disability Organizations On Recruitment, Hiring, Training, Retention, And Accommodation Of Individuals With Disabilities In Mississippi, Peter Oluwadare Kalejaiye
Dissertations
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 provides equal employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities (IWDs) by prohibiting discrimination in employment. However, one out of four IWDs face discrimination in employment in the United States (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Additionally, despite establishing the Office of Disability Employment Policy and enacting the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to help integrate IWDs into the workforce, IWDs face barriers to equal and equitable employment (NASEM, 2017). Previous studies recommend partnerships between employers and disability organizations (DOs) to provide employment opportunities and benefits for IWDs through recruitment, hiring, training, retention, and …

Elevating Educators: The Role Of Sponsorship In Fostering Teacher Engagement, Recognition, And Retention, Justin Mitchell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Teacher burnout and attrition have become pressing concerns in education, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The demands on educators have increased, yet systemic supports have often remained stagnant, leading to disengagement and decreased participation in extracurricular activities. This study examined the role of teacher sponsorship of extracurricular activities in fostering teacher engagement, recognition, and retention within a rural Title I middle school. Using an improvement science framework, this research explored how teachers’ involvement in extracurricular activities impacts their connection to the school community and whether targeted interventions such as professional learning communities and recognition initiatives can enhance teacher participation and …
Effective Best Practices In Social Studies Education: Empowering Students Despite Institutional Barriers, Shelbie A. Merriweather
Effective Best Practices In Social Studies Education: Empowering Students Despite Institutional Barriers, Shelbie A. Merriweather
Curriculum and Instruction Undergraduate Honors Theses
Social Studies has remained a prevalent feature of the curriculum taught in the United States education system since the start of the 20th century as society became concerned with teaching children to be active citizens in their communities, and has evolved to integrate the development of critical and historical thinking skills that will enable students to analyze historical events and figures to generate a historical narrative (Coleman, 2021; Smith et al., 1995). The lack of standardized tests centered around social studies has meant that legislation like No Child Left Behind limits the funding provided to social studies as opposed to …

The Mindful Way: A Mindfulness Psychoeducational Group For Latinx College Students, Karen A. Morales
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have extensively studied mindfulness as a promising intervention that can aid college students in managing stressors. Unfortunately, researchers have underrepresented minority populations like Latinx college students in mindfulness literature. The Mindful Way (TMW) is a culturally responsive psychoeducational group program that aims to close the gap in the literature. The pre-test and post-test of TMW program measures student’s tendency to practice mindfulness, their personal and academic resilience, degree of self-compassion, emotion regulation skills, problematic alcohol consumption, and symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, before and after participating in the program. The hypothesis of the present study is …

Refracting State Development: Alliances In The Virtual World Eve Online, Atticus Friendly
Sociology Honors Projects
Why would states, resource intensive and difficult organizations, develop when they are not necessary? Unlike the voluntaristic model of social organization assumed by liberals starting from a state of nature, the real-world history of state building is a narrative of necessity and competition. By probing the process of state development in a virtual world (EVE Online), this paper explores state building in the absence of social or physical infrastructure that ties people together, what Michael Mann calls “the social cage.” In doing so, it demonstrates support for the idea that violent competition drives state development as states build …
The Law Of The Biggest Pump: Legal Consciousness And The Texas Groundwater Dilemma, Riley Hodin
The Law Of The Biggest Pump: Legal Consciousness And The Texas Groundwater Dilemma, Riley Hodin
Political Science Honors Projects
Texas’s localized system of groundwater regulation is complicated by its strong tradition of property rights. This paper examines the legal consciousness of the everyday people subjected to that system. It relies on interviews with local water authorities, as well as an analysis of public comments made by stakeholders. When conflicts emerge, stakeholders tend to attribute negative outcomes to a failure to properly follow legal procedure, or to the improper intrusion of some non-legal entity. Authorities, however, blame the law itself. Both groups feel the law’s presence but struggle to locate its specific source or meaning.

Exploration Of Disorienting Dilemmas New Registered Nurses Experience In Clinical Situations, Heidi Ritchie
Dissertations
The transition new graduate registered nurses (RNs) experience is difficult. New graduates feel pressure related to job expectations and high workload responsibilities. As nurses begin working in clinical practice, some experience a disorienting dilemma—a disconnect between what was learned in school and what is experienced in clinical practice. According to Mezirow (1981), this is the first step in a transformative experience. Yet, there is a gap in knowledge regarding disorienting dilemmas new RNs with less than two years of experience encounter.
The purpose of this study was to explore disorienting dilemmas new graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) experience in the clinical …

There Would Be Food Forever: Leveraging The Culvert Case To Fight Toxic Fish Contamination In The Columbia River, Sarah Van Voorhis
UC Law Environmental Journal
The Native American Tribes of the Pacific Northwest signed treaties in the 1800s with a representative of the federal government that purported to protect their right to fish in their usual and accustomed places. Despite this explicit pro-vision of their treaties, the Tribes have struggled to exercise this right to fish. Through a series of court cases spanning decades, culminating in The Culvert Case in 2017, the Stevens Treaty Tribes have secured their right to access their tradi-tional fishing grounds, their right to an equal share of the harvestable fish, and finally, their right to the continued existence of the …

Eviction Sealing: A Lifeline In The Fight For Housing Justice, Allison Freedman
Eviction Sealing: A Lifeline In The Fight For Housing Justice, Allison Freedman
Faculty Scholarship
In January 2023, the White House released a Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights. The Blueprint called for immediate sealing of eviction case filings to reduce the likelihood that tenants would be locked out of future housing opportunities without the chance to defend themselves. Shortly thereafter, the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a request for public comment on how the use of eviction records and screening algorithms may affect tenant housing opportunities and drive discriminatory outcomes. The eviction crisis, its discriminatory effects, and the idea that sealing eviction records may provide a solution to …

Teacher Autonomy And Decision Making On Curricular Book Choices, Melanie D. Koss, Kathleen A. Paciga
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article reports findings from an email survey of 748 U.S. PreK–8 teachers. The survey invited teachers’ reflections on their autonomy in selecting children’s literature for classroom instruction and classroom libraries. In this descriptive study, researchers used frequency counts, cross-tabulations, and examination of text-based responses. Data were analyzed across three constructs of teacher autonomy: capacity, self-direction, and freedom. Findings show teachers feel well equipped to select quality literature, have more self-direction in literature used for read-alouds and inclusion in classroom libraries than for instruction, and report recent sociopolitical events in the United States have stifled their feelings of freedom. Internal …

From Disengaged To Flourishing: The Impact Of Authentic And Practical Professional Development On Teachers And Students, Julianne Scullen
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Building upon the ideas of social constructivists work in dialogic instruction (Bakhtin, 1981; Vygotsky, 1978) and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), this study sought to answer: How does teacher participation in a book club impact teacher disposition to dialogic practices in the classroom? And how does teacher participation in a book club influence teacher efficacy regarding the implementation of dialogic practice? Using case study research based on semi-structured interviews, book club transcripts, and participant reflective journal entries, changes in disposition toward dialogism and efficacy in dialogic classroom practice were explored. The book club itself served as an intervention and provided teachers …

The Utilization And Deterioration Of Travertine In Classical, Baroque, And Fascist Architecture: A Case Study From Rome, Italy, Kaitlyn V. Fitzgerald
The Utilization And Deterioration Of Travertine In Classical, Baroque, And Fascist Architecture: A Case Study From Rome, Italy, Kaitlyn V. Fitzgerald
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Travertine limestone has formed the resilient backbone of Roman architecture for over two millennia and across several cultural periods. This study identified the leading causes of travertine decay in Rome across Ancient, Baroque, and Fascist periods in order to efficiently prioritize conservation and restoration efforts across the city. The methodology developed here can then be utilized in other urban settings. Rome’s iconic landmarks such as the Flavian Amphitheater, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Spanish Steps all owe their existence to this local limestone. High rates of urbanization now dictate how architectural travertine interacts with its surrounding environments and landscapes. Grand …

Assessing The Recall Of Traffic Safety Campaigns In Arkansas, Pratik Babu Pokharel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study estimates the degree to which drivers recall traffic safety campaigns based on sociodemographic characteristics including driving frequency, vehicle type, education, income, age, household composition, race, and gender. Traffic safety campaigns are efforts to educate, persuade, and inspire individuals to adjust their attitudes and behaviors for improved road safety, utilizing planned communications over a set time period. They aim to encourage safe driving using slogans shown on television, radio, social media, billboards, and variable message signs. Two years of a mail-based survey conducted in Arkansas were used to estimate binary logistic regression models for each of four safety campaigns. …
An Analytical Evaluation Of Economic Geography Within Maine And Its Resource Industries: 1600 To Present, Maureen Mantooth
An Analytical Evaluation Of Economic Geography Within Maine And Its Resource Industries: 1600 To Present, Maureen Mantooth
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Resource peripheries represent a fringe area within economic geography, originating from the core-periphery theory developed by Friedmann and Miller. This concept has evolved to address global and regional contexts, referring to marginalized regions that rely heavily on the extraction and export of natural resources. By studying these regions, we gain a deeper understanding of critical components in global economic systems. This dissertation focuses on Maine as a case study of a resource periphery, using the framework proposed by Hayter et al. (2003) within the broader regional contexts of New England and the United States. Key factors explored include resource exploitation, …

Using Scaffolding, Gamification, And Self Awareness To Create Responsive Ux/Ui In Cad Software To Nurture Metacognition In Novice Users, Obed Ibrahim Gonzalez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Computer-aided Design (CAD) software represents a significant shift from manual and analog design processes to digital workflows, offering substantial utility, accuracy, and productivity benefits. However, CAD software often presents a steep learning curve, particularly for novice users who are new to the software or possess only basic knowledge. Traditional CAD curricula have predominantly focused on technical problem-solving—teaching tools and systems—while often neglecting strategic knowledge that encompasses reflection, planning, and refining, which are essential components of metacognition. Metacognition is crucial for transforming novices into experts who use fewer and more complex commands, employ sophisticated planning, and achieve their goals more efficiently. …
Weird Weather Against The Pathetic Fallacy, Avery L. Leonard
Weird Weather Against The Pathetic Fallacy, Avery L. Leonard
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This project claims the weather and nature in Algernon Blackwood’s “The Willows” and Shirley Jackson’s “The Summer People” is weird fiction and displays an eerie subversion of John Ruskin’s literary philosophy, “The Pathetic Fallacy.” By analyzing these texts through the lens of the weird fiction genre, the signifiers of the genre make the weather in these stories extend past common literary tropes. Ruskin’s work calls attention to the literary trope of assigning weather in literature emotion, yet Algernon Blackwood and Shirley Jackson intentionally deviate from the pathetic fallacy and make the weather in their stories weird and eerie by both …
