The Theoretical Role Of The Wind In Aerosolising Microplastics And Nanoplastics From Coastal Combined Sewer Overflows, Lauren Biermann, David Moffat, Clive E Sabel, Thomas E Stovin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Inhaled microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) have shown bio-persistence in the body, with concerning implications for human health. Airborne MNPs primarily originate from terrestrial sources, but sea air may contribute when onshore 'aerosolising' winds coincide with high concentrations of MNPs in surface waters. From the thousands of cities worldwide with Combined Sewer Overflows, millions to billions of MNPs can be discharged daily into rivers, estuaries, and the sea. To assess the possible links between water pollution and air quality, we analysed two years of Combined Sewer Overflows (spills) off Plymouth, UK, alongside same-day and long-term meteorological and satellite data. Winds exceeding …

It is known that β1 integrins and a downstream signaling molecule c-Src are upregulated in prostate cancer (PrCa) tissues, are co-expressed in circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and contribute to cancer progression. Here, we demonstrate that sEVs from PrCa patients show robust expression of both β1 integrins and c-Src. The impact of irradiation, a widely used therapy for the treatment of PrCa, on circulating sEVs is however not fully understood. We show that sEVs isolated from the plasma of transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (TRAMP) mice, stimulate migration and anchorage-independent growth of recipient cancer cells, but sEVs are not active …

Lived Experiences Of Ex-Offenders In Securing Stable Employment After Reentry Programs, Tony Lemar Williams Jul 2025

Lived Experiences Of Ex-Offenders In Securing Stable Employment After Reentry Programs, Tony Lemar Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals into society has garnered increasing attention largely due to structural and social barriers that impede their successful transition. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of ex-offenders who successfully obtained gainful employment following their reintegration into society while navigating the enduring consequences of their past convictions. Self-determination, self-efficacy, and implicit theories grounded this study. Ten participants were recruited through social media platforms and flyers on community billboards in a suburban area of Ohio. Data were collected using semistructured in-depth interviews. Narrative coding, according to Saldana, was used …

Genetic Gain And Loss In The Evolution Of Amniote T Cell Receptor And Immunoglobulin Genes, Jordan M. Sampson Jul 2025

Genetic Gain And Loss In The Evolution Of Amniote T Cell Receptor And Immunoglobulin Genes, Jordan M. Sampson

Biology ETDs

The immune system of most jawed vertebrates consists of three major cell types: αβ T cells, γδ T cells, and B cells. Every species evaluated contains the loci that encode the highly conserved αβ T cells, however, γδ T cells are less conserved and have been lost in squamate reptiles. The loci that encode the B cell receptor have also varied across evolution. Seven immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain isotypes have been identified in amniotes: IgM, IgD, IgY, IgG, IgE, IgO, and IgA. Some are found in most species (IgM and IgD) and others only in specific lineages (IgY or IgG). …

Service Provider Practice And Dual Victimization Survivors Seeking Emergency Shelter, Lana Heinen Jul 2025

Service Provider Practice And Dual Victimization Survivors Seeking Emergency Shelter, Lana Heinen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Violence Against Women Act supports responses to the crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. It does not provide a permanent or guaranteed pathway to safe and stable housing for those experiencing the dual victimization of domestic violence and human trafficking. Service provider practices can alleviate or aggravate barriers faced by this population. These practices are influenced by the education and training service providers receive before entering the field and throughout their career. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore service providers’ perceptions of structures and barriers contributing to the obstacles of accessing …

The alveolar bone is a specialized mineralized structure supporting the lifelong functionality of the tooth in mastication. The alveolar bone develops from the dental follicle (DF) during tooth root formation due to deliberate epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. However, how DF progenitor cell fates are regulated toward alveolar bone osteoblasts remains unknown. We find that Hedgehog signaling activities are transiently activated during the onset of tooth root formation and alveolar bone formation. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP)-expressing DF cells are highly responsive to Hedgehog signaling, yet constitutive Hedgehog activation using Pthrp-creER and Ptch1-floxed alleles potently suppresses alveolar osteoblast and ligament differentiation of PTHrP+ DF …

Exploring The Promise And Limitations Of Point-Charge-Free Potentials For Hydrocarbon Modeling, Raymond Weldon, Feng Wang Jul 2025

Exploring The Promise And Limitations Of Point-Charge-Free Potentials For Hydrocarbon Modeling, Raymond Weldon, Feng Wang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Models for hydrated and neat hydrocarbons are developed with the adaptive force matching method using either B3LYP-D3(BJ) or MP2 as reference. Hydrocarbons, being non-polar, present an opportunity to explore the possibility of creating force fields without modeling electrostatics. For liquid methane, ethane, cyclopentane, and cyclohexene, models without partial charges achieved excellent agreement with experiments when fitted against MP2 reference with SAPT dispersion. In aqueous solutions, models without solute partial charges maintain high quality for saturated hydrocarbons but exhibit reduced accuracy for cyclohexene. Notably, liquid methane's weak intermolecular interactions make it particularly sensitive to the choice of reference method. Our findings …

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions evaluations from agroecosystems are critical, particularly as technology improves. Consistent GHG measurement methods are essential to the evaluation of GHG emissions. The objective of the study was to evaluate potential differences in gas-flux-determination (GFD) options and carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes and growing-season-long emissions estimates from furrow-irrigated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in southeast Arkansas. Four GFD methods were evaluated [i.e., linear (L) or exponential (E) regression models, with negative fluxes (WNF) included in the dataset or replacing negative fluxes (RNF)] over the 2024 growing season using a LI-COR field-portable chamber and gas …

Chromosome instability leading to aneuploidy and accumulation of copy number gains or losses is a hallmark of cancer. Copy number alteration (CNA) signatures are increasingly used for cancer risk stratification, but size thresholds for defining CNAs across cancers are variable and the biological and clinical implications of CNA size heterogeneity and co-occurrence are incompletely understood. Here we analyze CNA and clinical data from 691 meningiomas and 10,383 tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas to develop cancer- and chromosome-specific size-dependent CNA and CNA co-occurrence models to predict tumor control and overall survival. Our results shed light on technical considerations for biomarker …

Oxytocin Reduces Asymmetries In Dominance Relationships Between Pairs Of Captive Female Lions, Jessica C Burkhart, Abby Guthmann, Evianne M Dubois, Sarah R Heilbronner, Craig Packer

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Free-ranging female African lions maintain symmetrical social relationships by respecting each other's "ownership" of valuable food items rather than by supplanting subordinates according to well-defined dominance hierarchies. However, captivity often skews relationships in captive carnivores, hence we investigated whether captive female lions demonstrate obvious dominance relationships. Oxytocin has been shown to elicit context-specific impacts that equalize dominant subordinate relationships, thus we hypothesized that oxytocin would reduce any asymmetries found between dominants and subordinates in captive lions. We designed two experimental protocols for investigating pairwise relationships. We first identified dominant individuals by performing neutral trials that allowed each female equal opportunity …

Relapsing fever caused by Borrelia sp. is a neglected disease in Mexico and more studies are needed to update its presence in multiple regions of the country. Here, recombinant proteins glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase (GlpQ) and three Borrelia immunogenic protein A (BipA) variants were used for serosurveillance in 142 human serum samples. Results showed that two persons were positive to Borrelia extracts and GlpQ but negative to all three BipA, suggesting they were infected by relapsing fever spirochetes of a yet to be determined species. This shows that testing for GlpQ and Borrelia extracts are a useful tool for potential infections and …

Environmental Exposures Increase Health Risks In Childhood Cancer Survivors, Omar Shakeel, Nicole M Wood, Hannah M Thompson, Michael E Scheurer, Mark D Miller

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) are at increased risk for chronic health issues due to late effects of cancer and its treatment. We address the impact of environmental exposures, such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, extreme weather events, and pesticides, on the health and survival of CCSs. These environmental hazards have been associated with worsening health outcomes and decreased survival among CCSs on a global scale. We also highlight that providers at a major pediatric cancer center in the United States have limited knowledge and practical skills about environmental risk factors and how to reduce exposures. Our survey results show that …

Communication, Technology, And Culture

Communication Research Trends

"...from the alphabet to the motorcar, Western man has been steadily refashioned in a slow technological explosion that has extended over 2,500 years. From the time of the telegraph onward, ••• Western man bega'l to live an implosion. He began suddenly ... to play the movie of his 2,500 year explosion backward".

In characteristically vivid imagery Marshall McLuhan in Understanding Media expresses his belief in the power of technology to transform culture. McLuhan's words raise a host of questions about the complex interrelationship of culture, technology, and human consciousness. Questions such as: does technology determine cultural change? how do changes …

Television Viewing And Family Communication Jul 2025

Television Viewing And Family Communication

Communication Research Trends

Over the past thirty years a host of research studies has sought to determine just what are the effects of television viewing on social behaviour. In particular, study after study has attempted to establish once and for all whether or not the watching of violent programmes by children and adolescents is a direct cause of later aggressive behaviour.

Yet today all that these studies can tell us for certain is that ''for some children, under some conditions, some television is harmful'' and that ''for most children, under most conditions, most television is probably neither harmful nor particularly beneficial." And we …

The Heritage Conversation Partners Project: Virtual Cultural Heritage Exchange In An Anthropology Course, Michael J. Kimball, Karin L. Bates, Miranda Bermudez, Liner Emilce Solarte Chourio, Amanda Consol

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

We describe the structure, benefits, and challenges associated with a virtual cultural heritage exchange (VCHE) between undergraduate students in an applied anthropology class and a group of English language learners (ELL). Using qualitative data collection and analysis methods, the project aimed to teach anthropological methods and perspectives to the students while investigating three research questions: Will a VCHE (1) build social bonds and bridges, (2) improve English language acquisition, and (3) raise “heritage consciousness” (awareness and appreciation of, along with an associated sense of agency toward, cultural heritage) among participants? Results support the research questions and show the effectiveness of …

Mentoring Under The Light Of Ignatian Spirituality, Llorenç Puig Puig Sj, Rosa Nomen, Luis A. Martínez

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This article proposes Ignatian Mentoring as a framework for enriching academic mentoring with insights from Ignatian spirituality. While mentoring traditionally supports professional and personal development, especially for early-career faculty, the Jesuit tradition offers a deeper, holistic perspective inspired by spiritual accompaniment practices such as those found in the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus and the Spiritual Exercises. The framework is based on the mentoring program launched in 2021 by the International Association of Jesuit Engineering and Sciences Schools (IAJES), which connects faculty across a global network of more than 60 Schools. Based on two years of practical experience involving …

Queera Personalis: Theorizing A Queer Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm In First-Year Writing, Jimmy Hamill

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This article argues that putting the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) in conversation with Queer Composition Pedagogy can support LGBTQIA+ students and their often-fraught positions at Catholic universities. Beginning with my history as a gay Catholic at a Jesuit college, I examine the Jesuit value of cura personalis or “care for the whole person” by asking how queer students at a Catholic college can be wholly cared for in an institution that marginalizes queer people. Locating this conversation in the context of the first-year writing classroom, a contact zone where students come from diverse personal and disciplinary backgrounds, this article links …

Discerning Together In Small Groups, Franck Janin Jul 2025

Discerning Together In Small Groups, Franck Janin

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The author, drawing on his personal experience, offers a clear reflection and methodology for common discernment, inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The difficulties and problems are noted, as are the possibilities and potential of this proposal. The process is certainly complex. It requires great generosity and willingness on the part of all those involved, but as the author concludes, “it works.” We are faced with a proposal of Ignatian spirituality that can enrich and illuminate the new paths of synodality along which the Church is journeying.
