Theorizing Graphic Embodiments: A Feminist Perspective, Lisa Detora, Jeannie Ludlow Jul 2025

Theorizing Graphic Embodiments: A Feminist Perspective, Lisa Detora, Jeannie Ludlow

All Faculty Scholarship

In response to the increasing politicization and polarization of discourses around gender, sexuality, and the body, feminist theorists like Judith Butler call for feminism to strive toward flexibility and responsivity. This essay lays out some of the theoretical considerations that inform studies of graphic embodiment—or studies of embodiment in graphic narratives—both generally and within feminist studies, then examines several graphic texts by Tillie Walden and Élodie Durand that exemplify feminist theories of embodiment, with particular attention to the creative co-construction of embodied narratives.

Introduction To Sociology: Deviance And Crime, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D. Jul 2025

Introduction To Sociology: Deviance And Crime, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources

Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted concepts of deviance and crime by synthesizing major theoretical perspectives and contemporary research findings. Beginning with the fluid and culturally contingent nature of deviance, the discussion highlights how social norms, historical context, and power structures define what is considered deviant behavior. It examines the influence of economic elites on moral and legal standards, drawing on Marxist analyses, and considers the impact of societal labeling on personal identity through Lemert’s labeling theory.

The paper then delves into biological foundations of criminality, reviewing Lombroso’s atavism theory and modern research on genetic predispositions, including twin, adoption, and …

Validation Of A 5-Item Tool To Measure Parent Assessment Of Clinician Compassion During Pediatric Visits., Eena S Lin, Alexandra Seabury, Mohammadsadegh Mikaeili, Joshua Bosire, Anthony Mazzarelli, Michael B. Roberts, Stephen Trzeciak, Brian W Roberts, Rafat Ahmed

PCOM Scholarly Works

Our objective was to validate a 5-item compassion measurement tool as a reliable measure of patient assessments of clinician compassion in the pediatric outpatient setting. We completed a cross-sectional study in a U.S. academic healthcare system consisting of six pediatric clinics between February and September 2023. We adapted the original 5-item tool to elicit responses regarding the pediatric patient. The measure was disseminated with the Clinician and Group Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and System (CG-CAHPS) survey. We included patients aged < 18 years old who had an outpatient clinic visit and had a parent complete the CG-CAHPS survey. Validity testing of the 5-item tool was performed using confirmatory factor analysis. Internal reliability was tested using Cronbach's α, and convergent validity with overall provider rating questions from the CG-CAHPS survey was evaluated using Spearman correlation. We analyzed 640 responses. The median (interquartile range) patient age was 8 (3-13) years, and 47% of patients were female. Sixty-one percent of patients were White/Caucasian and 25% were Black/African American. Confirmatory factor analyses found a good fit. The compassion measure demonstrated good internal consistency (α = 0.97) and convergent validity with overall provider rating (rs = 0.63 (95% confidence interval 0.56-0.70)) but reflected a patient experience domain distinctly different from what is currently …

Introduction To Sociology: Race And Ethnicity, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D. Jul 2025

Introduction To Sociology: Race And Ethnicity, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources

Abstract: This paper critically examines the phrase "one nation, indivisible" from the Pledge of Allegiance in light of the complex realities of race, ethnicity, and immigration in the United States. While the pledge asserts a unified national identity, this ideal is frequently undermined by systemic social, economic, and political divisions. Drawing from multicultural and sociopolitical frameworks, the paper explores how the lived experiences of marginalized groups—particularly racial and ethnic minorities and immigrant communities—reveal a fragmented national reality. The analysis engages with the implications of the 1965 Immigration Act, which, despite dismantling explicitly racist immigration quotas, restructured racial inequalities through new …

Protein kinases (PKs) regulate various cellular functions, and are targeted by small-molecule kinase inhibitors (KIs) in cancers and other diseases. However, drug resistance (DR) of KIs occurs through critical mutations in four types of representative hotspots, including gatekeeper, G-loop, αC-helix, and A-loop. KI DR has become a common clinical complication affecting multiple cancers, targeted kinases, and drugs. To tackle this challenge, we report an upgraded web server, namely Dr. Kinase, for predicting the loci of four DR hotspots and assessing effects of mutations on DR hotspots for PKs in our previous studies, by utilizing multimodal features and deep hybrid learning. …

Investigating Long-Lasting Meteor Train Phenomena In Optical And Radio Regimes, Logan E. Cordonnier

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Throughout history, meteors have been regarded as fascinating and portentous events, with bygone astronomers diligently recording their occurrence. The research presented herein continues in this tradition, using modern instruments, software, and data reduction techniques to study long-lasting meteor trail phenomena, specifically in the optical (persistent trains; PTs) and radio (meteor radio afterglows; MRAs) regimes. The overarching goal was to investigate the similarities between these phenomena, which began with the creation of a PT catalog. Many of the prior assumptions about the nature of PTs were found to be unsubstantiated, and several new behaviors were uncovered. This includes the discovery of …

Mtmr Regulates Kras Function By Controlling Plasma Membrane Levels Of Phospholipids, Taylor E Lange, Ali Naji, Ransome Van Der Hoeven, Hong Liang, Yong Zhou, Gerald R V Hammond, John F Hancock, Kwang-Jin Cho

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

KRAS, a small GTPase involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, frequently gains activating mutations in human cancers. For KRAS to function, it must bind the plasma membrane (PM) via interactions between its membrane anchor and phosphatidylserine (PtdSer). Therefore, depleting PM PtdSer abrogates KRAS PM binding and activity. From a genome-wide siRNA screen to identify genes regulating KRAS PM localization, we identified a set of phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-phosphatases: myotubularin-related proteins (MTMR) 2, 3, 4, and 7. Here, we show that silencing MTMR 2/3/4/7 disrupts KRAS PM interactions by reducing PM PI 4-phosphate (PI4P) levels, thereby disrupting the localization and operation of …

Alpha-Synuclein Dysregulation In Systemic Pathophysiology Of Synucleinopathies, Hallie H. Dolin, Bowen Zhou, Robert W. Maitta

Faculty Scholarship

Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) has long been identified as the etiologic agent of multiple neurodegenerative diseases, the most common and well-known of which are Parkinson's disease (PD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). While it is known that the pathophysiology of these synucleinopathies involves aggregation of improperly-folded α-syn, the mechanisms leading to its accumulation have not been fully identified. However, multiple pathways have been proposed, any or all of which may contribute to synucleinopathies. The role of α-syn in normal homeostasis and in other organ systems, especially the hematopoietic system, has been reported recently. Research within the last decade has shown that α-syn …

Background and hypothesis: Sensory gating deficit is considered a pathophysiological feature of schizophrenia, which has been linked to N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction as one of the potential underlying mechanisms. Here, we hypothesize that higher levels of NMDAR antibody (Ab) may contribute to the sensory gating deficits in schizophrenia.

Study design: We enrolled 72 non-smoking inpatients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES), most of them with only a relatively short duration of exposure to antipsychotic medications, and 51 non-smoking healthy controls (HC). Sensory gating was measured by P50 evoked potentials ratio and the difference between the two stimuli in an auditory paired-stimuli paradigm …

Lewy Body Disease (LBD) is a common yet understudied form of dementia that imposes a significant burden on public health. It shares clinical similarities with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), as both progress through stages of normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. A major obstacle in LBD diagnosis is data scarcity, which limits the effectiveness of deep learning. In contrast, AD datasets are more abundant, offering potential for knowledge transfer. However, LBD and AD data are typically collected from different sites using different machines and protocols, resulting in a distinct domain shift. To effectively leverage AD data while mitigating domain shift, …

Exploring The Validity Of Vocabulary Assessments In Racially, Dialectically, And Socioeconomically Diverse Preschool Populations, Lauren Betzer

LSU Master's Theses

Recent research has advocated for interactive assessments of vocabulary over more traditional, static assessments, as interactive assessments are more sensitive to linguistic and cultural diversity. Static vocabulary assessments, such as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), probe existing knowledge, while interactive assessments, such as the Quick Interactive Language Screener (QUILS), examines a child’s language in a wholistic manner by assessing previously learned vocabulary knowledge, syntactic knowledge, and processing when learning a new concept. It remains unclear which assessment more accurately captures children's vocabulary knowledge throughout the Deep South—a region characterized by its unique cultural and linguistic environment, which includes the …
