A Narrative Study Of How Secondary School Teachers Experience Generative Ai Writing Tools In The English Language Arts Classroom, Nick Brodell
Doctor of Education (EdD)
With the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) programs such as ChatGPT commonplace in secondary English language arts (ELA) classrooms, scholars and practitioners are both curious and skeptical about the technology’s ability to help students improve their ELA skills. Teachers have been using tutoring software and Web 2.0 technologies for decades, yet AI writing tools offer new functionalities. Teachers and administrators have experiences engaging with the benefits and burdens of the technology, and scholars of composition pedagogy, ITS (intelligent tutoring systems), and ML (machine learning) have theories about students using it for skills acquisition and practice. This study collected and analyzed …

The Criminal Record As A Death Sentence: Unmasking The Ignored Realities Of Formerly Incarcerated University Graduates On Professional Licencing Challenges, Mbongiseni Mdakane, Bongani Innocent Nkambule, Sindile Amina Ngubane
Journal of Prison Education Research
Recently it is increasingly common practice for universities and professional registration councils to probe into applicants’ criminal records as a precondition for admission. Using social constructionism, this qualitative study explored the experiences of six formerly incarcerated individuals previously sentenced to life imprisonment, who hold professional university degrees in Law, Education, Psychology and Social Work and investigated whether having a criminal record had any bearing when applying for professional registration. The results indicate that due to the perceived stigma of, and discrimination against a criminal record, there exist varying degrees of criminal record disclosure ranging from partial, to full and non-disclosure. …

The Kentucky Microbiome Dataset, Rachel L. Washburn, Douglas C. Curl
Research Data--KGS
The Kentucky Microbiome Dataset is a continuously updated geolocated dataset which describes the distribution and diversity of microorganisms across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Each geolocated point represents a location reported in the peer-reviewed literature where microorganisms were sampled from soil, water, geologic substrates, or clinical settings. Environmental studies include only non-host-associated, non-clinical microorganisms sampled from natural environments. Clinical studies are mapped separately to highlight locations where investigations into host-associated or human health-related microbes have occurred.
For each location, associated metadata include study information, taxonomic classifications, sample type, sampling method, latitude and longitude, sampling date, publication reference, and a direct link …

Research Reports
The report analyses the adoption of FOSS in India, primarily through case studies across four sectors (healthcare, education, finance, and software and IT services) and different types of organisations (start-ups, non-profits, medium, large, and public sector organisations). The study highlights both the benefits and challenges experienced by organisations using FOSS. The study illustrates that while organisations benefit from increased innovations, cost/ time savings, flexibility, and enhanced security, they also face challenges such as lack of enough skilled personnel and limited community support. Organisations are also seen taking a cautious approach to licensing, favouring permissive licenses over restrictive ones. Based on …
Ideal Mathematical Pendulum: Examples Of Physics Problem Conditions Expressed Primarily Through Diagrams, Vasiliy Znamenskiy
Ideal Mathematical Pendulum: Examples Of Physics Problem Conditions Expressed Primarily Through Diagrams, Vasiliy Znamenskiy
Open Educational Resources
This article explores an innovative approach to physics education centered on the formulation of problems using visual diagrams with minimal textual description. Departing from traditional word-heavy methods, the proposed technique leverages schematic drawings as the primary mode of problem presentation. This visual-first strategy facilitates intuitive understanding, promotes spatial reasoning, and supports the development of abstract thinking in students. The method is especially effective in diverse classrooms where language barriers may hinder comprehension. By engaging learners through image-based tasks, the approach reduces cognitive load, fosters independent discovery of physical principles, and enhances overall conceptual clarity. Examples from mechanics and oscillations illustrate …
Secondary Ela Mentor Teachers’ Feedback On Preservice Teachers’ Video-Recorded Lessons, Homood Alharbi
Secondary Ela Mentor Teachers’ Feedback On Preservice Teachers’ Video-Recorded Lessons, Homood Alharbi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the feedback practices of secondary English Language Arts (ELA) mentor teachers and the reasoning behind their feedback to preservice teachers (PSETs) during early field experiences. Motivated by my own experience as a preservice teacher, where the absence of timely, meaningful feedback often left me without needed guidance, I was drawn to study how mentor teachers notice, interpret, and respond to novice teaching. This study focuses not on the mentoring relationship itself, but on the content and rationale of feedback provided by mentors.
Three secondary ELA mentor teachers participated in this qualitative study. Each responded to two video-recorded …

Sacred Bonds: The Association Between Religious Giving And Relationship Quality, Sofia C. Suxo-Sanchez
Sacred Bonds: The Association Between Religious Giving And Relationship Quality, Sofia C. Suxo-Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Grounded in interdependence theory, we sought to understand how religious giving is associated with relationship quality by drawing on two distinct datasets, one from emerging adult couples and another from established couples. Using structural equation modeling, we tested the direct association between religious giving and relationship quality, and whether it was mediated by materialism. Our quantitative findings contrasted previous research; we did not find materialism to mediate the association and found a significant, negative association between religious giving and relationship quality. Through a team-based coding approach, we explored how and why established couples believed religious giving impacted their relationship quality. …

Real-time decision making is supported by data-hungry emerging technologies such as machine learning and digital twins. Innovations in manufacturing process control utilizing these technologies are constrained by interoperability. Marketing materials, sales pitches, and academic literature portray interoperability on the factory floor as seamless and robust. However, this study demonstrates that in spite of plentiful mature standards, interoperability on the factory floor is neither seamless nor robust. To exemplify interoperability in the context of an established and widely adopted standard, this study analyzes the interoperability of machine tools produced by a premier equipment builder which has exceeded US$1 billion in sales …

Any failure in frontonasal development can lead to malformations at the middle facial region, such as frontonasal dysplasia, midfacial clefts, and hyper/hypotelorism. Various environmental factors influence morphogenesis through epigenetic regulations, including the action of noncoding microRNAs (miRNAs). However, it remains unclear how miRNAs are involved in the frontonasal development. In our analysis of publicly available miRNA-seq and RNA-seq datasets, we found that miR-28a-5p, miR-302a-3p, miR-302b-3p, and miR-302d-3p were differentially expressed in the frontonasal process during embryonic days 10.5 to 13.5 (E10.5–E13.5) in mice. Overexpression of these miRNAs led to a suppression of cell proliferation in cultured mouse embryonic frontonasal mesenchymal …

Background: Despite the global public health threat posed by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter spp, clinical and molecular epidemiological studies on international isolates remain scarce. Historically, the taxonomy of Enterobacter has been challenging, limiting our understanding of the clinical characteristics and outcomes of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter spp infections.
Methods: Hospitalized patients enrolled in the CRACKLE-2 study (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03646227) from 2016 to 2018 with cultures positive for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter spp were included. Clinical and microbiologic data were collected from health records. Whole genome sequencing was performed, and the population structures of selected predominant clones were analyzed.
Results: We enrolled 136 hospitalized patients with carbapenemase-producing …
The U.S. Executive Order On Seabed Mining Is Consistent With International Law, James Kraska
The U.S. Executive Order On Seabed Mining Is Consistent With International Law, James Kraska
International Law Studies
This article analyzes the legality of U.S. unilateral seabed mining authorized by Executive Order 14285, signed by President Donald Trump on April 24, 2025, permitting mineral extraction on the U.S. continental shelf and international deep seabed. Critics, including China, the European Union, and the International Seabed Authority, contend that this policy violates international law by circumventing Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which designates seabed minerals as the “common heritage of mankind” and mandates regulation through the ISA. The article asserts that, as a non-party to UNCLOS, the United States is not …

Background: Trauma is a leading cause of mortality, but injury-specific molecular targets remain largely unknown. We hypothesized that distinctive yet unrecognized tissue targets accessible to circulating ligands might emerge during trauma, thereby underscoring a trauma-related proteome.
Methods: We screened a peptide library to discover targets in a porcine model of major trauma: compound femur fracture with hemorrhagic shock. Bioinformatics yielded conserved motifs, and candidate receptors were affinity purified. In silico and in vitro approaches served to investigate possible associations between candidate receptors and calcium, a major component of skeletal muscle and bone. In vivo homing and molecular imaging (PET/MRI and …

Security Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are crucial for ensuring software security. However, their misuse introduces vulnerabilities, potentially leading to severe data breaches and substantial financial loss. Complex API design, inadequate documentation, and insufficient security training often lead to unintentional misuse by developers. The software security community has devised and evaluated several approaches to detecting security API misuse to help developers and organizations. This study rigorously reviews the literature on detecting misuse of security APIs to gain a comprehensive understanding of this critical domain. Our goal is to identify and analyze security API misuses, the detection approaches developed, and the evaluation …

IMPORTANCE: Few value-based payment programs have targeted outpatient surgery, although these procedures comprise most surgeries performed in hospitals. In 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced), the first episode-based payment model to include an outpatient surgical condition-spine surgery. It is not known whether bundled payments reduce spending or improve quality for outpatient surgery, despite plans to expand outpatient episodes in future models.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hospital participation in the first year of BPCI Advanced for outpatient and inpatient spine surgery (back and neck except spinal fusion procedures [BNESF]) was …

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death globally, with metastasis driven by circulating tumor cells (CTCs)-particularly clusters-being a major treatment challenge. Despite their critical role, the biological differences between single CTCs and CTC clusters remain unclear. Here, we comprehensively compared their behavioral, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiles in lung cancer models. Compared with single cells, CTC clusters present enhanced metastatic potential, greater survival in the bloodstream and increased resistance to microenvironment. Mechanistically, the Src/FN1 pathway is centrally activated in clusters, promoting intercellular cohesion and protecting against immune clearance and stress in circulation. Pharmacological inhibition of Src with the clinical …

Lowndes County is a predominantly Black rural county in Alabama, in the United States, which has a historical and current legacy of racial discrimination, creating inequitable infrastructure access and adverse health impacts. Over 80% rely on on-site sanitation infrastructure and most are failing. A community assessment of exposure to untreated sewage was conducted using samples from residential drinking water, surface swabs, and soil combined with environmental water and soil samples using culture-based and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) methods. Testing varied slightly across samples, due to difficulty of access or availability. Of 43 households, 68% and 55% of houses had …

The diagnosis of chronic Chagas disease is challenging due to the wide genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, and low levels of parasitemia, resulting in low sensitivity and accuracy with existing diagnostics. We report a magneto-immunoassay that employs dually labeled magnetic beads incorporating a recombinant Tc24 antigen, which is homologous across multiple discrete typing units of T cruzi. In this pilot study, 102 serum samples from 7 endemic countries were tested by this magneto-immunoassay, revealing its ability to distinguish Chagas-positive from Chagas-negative cases more accurately and faster than a standard Tc24-based immunoassay.

Dissertations and Theses
Pesticides are used globally for a wide range of applications including agricultural, forestry, roadsides, freshwater systems, and personal use. While pesticides have ensured efficient crop production, they are frequently transported away from application sites and are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Pesticides are often detected in watersheds and rivers globally, which can have unintentional toxic effects on non-target organisms by interfering with cellular processes, behavior, feeding, reproduction, and disrupting endocrine processes. The aggregating anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, is an important species along the North American Pacific coast due to its symbiotic relationships that contribute to high productivity, and its …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in high-risk populations. Although prophylactic options are available, there are no effective oral therapeutics for RSV infection. Obeldesivir (ODV) is an orally bioavailable prodrug of the nucleoside analog GS-441524, which is converted intracellularly to its active nucleoside triphosphate and inhibits the RSV RNA polymerase. Here we report the potent antiviral activity of ODV against geographically and temporally diverse RSV A and B clinical isolates (EC50: 0.20–0.66 μM). Resistance selection studies with ODV and GS-441524 against RSV identify a single amino acid substitution, I777L, in the L polymerase with …

Background: Long coronavirus disease (COVID), which affects an estimated 44.69-48.04 million people in the United States, is an ongoing public health concern that will persist as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread.
Methods: We developed a computational simulation model representing the clinical course, health effects, and associated costs of a person with long COVID.
Results: Simulations show that the average total cost of a long COVID case can range from $5084-$11 646 (assuming symptoms only last 1 year) with 92.5%-95.2% of these costs being productivity losses. Therefore, the current number of long COVID cases could cost …

Fin De Siècle Russian Topos And Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel, Jaidan Ursich
Fin De Siècle Russian Topos And Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel, Jaidan Ursich
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Russian composers, including Glinka and The Mighty Five, helped establish a fin de siècle Russian nationalistic style in art music through the implementation of idiomatic folk music gestures and other commonly employed musical elements. Scholars, including Richard Taruskin, Barry Bilderback, and Pieter Van Den Toorn, have identified many of these elements, however, they have not provided clear codification of a Russian topic. Likewise, the music of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov has been largely ignored when compared to that of his contemporaries, though most research indicates he was heralded as a nationalistic composer.
The purpose of this research was to create an initial …

Incorporating kelp into American diets offers a promising avenue for enhancing nutrition and environmental sustainability. Despite its nutritional richness and ecological benefits as a "superfood" and carbon sink, cultural resistance presents a barrier to its widespread acceptance. This study delves into kelp's nutritional content and ecological advantages, exploring its potential to reshape dietary habits. Drawing insights from interviews and surveys, cultural norms emerge as a significant obstacle to kelp's integration into American cuisine. Strategies inspired by successful culinary adaptations, such as creole dishes, are proposed to navigate these challenges and shift societal perceptions. Furthermore, integrating kelp into familiar American foods …

New Approaches To Media Education
Communication Research Trends
There is increasing consensus among educators around the world that some form of education for the use of the public media - especially television - should be an integral part of the primary and secondary school education.
Teachers are daily experiencing the fact that one of the major cultural influences forming the imagination of their students is the often long hours watching television. Sometimes television is a more important 'educational experience' than the school. Too often, however, the school, family life and the· television set are three mutually antagonistic or indifferent poles that leave young people drifting in a no …
The Challenge Of Cable Television
The Challenge Of Cable Television
Communication Research Trends
Cable television is at least thirty years old, yet it is still talked of as a new communications medium. Why? Optimists say because it has yet to realise its multi-channel potential to enrich and diversify television programming. Even better, cable will provide the citizen with a host of interactive information, educational, and transaction services.
Sceptics see cable offering old programming in new packages. They ask: Will only the well-off benefit? Who will control cable systems? Can privacy be protected? Does cable TV damage public service broadcasting? What do we really want cable for?
In many countries cable is on the …
