Critical Reviews Of Advertising
Critical Reviews Of Advertising
Communication Research Trends
In the late 1950s and early 1960s a series of very influential thinkers began a strong movement of criticism of advertising. This questioning of advertising led to a deeper questioning of the 'cult of consumerism' which advertising propagates.
Vance Packard in his popular book, The Hidden Persuaders (1956) attacked advertising for using the techniques of depth psychology to raise 'subliminal anxieties' and manipulate desires for alcohol, cigarettes and other consumer items. John Kenneth Galbraith, in The Affluent Society (1958) pointed out that advertising was encouraging a wasteful consumerism which allowed a small portion of the world's people to use up …

- Patterns of niche partitioning among closely related taxa, such as those in incipient adaptive radiations, can provide clues into how niches are created, partitioned, and integrated over ecological and evolutionary time scales. Hawaiian Metrosideros is a ~3-MYO adaptive radiation of trees that dominates the Hawaiian Islands in continuous stands within islands and allows examination of niche partitioning at the early stages of adaptive radiation.
- We monitored growth and survivorship over 2 years of seedlings derived from open-pollinated fruits of eight Metrosideros taxa distributed along the elevation gradient of Koʻolau Volcano, Oʻahu, under four combinations of light and phosphorus. We included …

The Carpet Bag Correspondence, Russell J. Desimone, Erik J. Chaput
Dorr Scholarship
In late December 1842 and early 1843 there appeared several newspaper articles in the Providence Journal under the caption of “The Carpet Bag” Correspondence. In all four letters were published in the local newspapers all claiming to be from the carpet bag. Two of the letters were written by Dutee J. Pearce of Newport to Thomas Dorr the leader of the suffrage movement in Rhode Island. The other two letters were written to Dorr by Dr. J.A. Brown and Louis Lapham. The second Pearce letter is interesting because it discusses giving the Black community a jury trial.

We explore the ability of machine learning methods to discover underlying equations of physics by searching for the equations governing galaxy size in a semianalytic model. This case study allows us to evaluate the process as we know the ground truth. We find that we fail to find an equation to predict galaxy size on the entire data set, but are successful when we separate out disk galaxies where we expect the physics driving galaxy size to be different than in bulge-dominated systems. We are also able to find an equation for bulge size, but not without adding an additional …

Background
Summer vacation is a time when youth gain excessive weight. A key driver of unhealthy weight gain is poor dietary quality. The absence of consistent structure (e.g., school), is hypothesized to be one of the reasons for lower diet quality during summer. This study examined differences in school and summer dietary quality among a diverse cohort of children across three years. We also examined the impact of attending structured programs on children’s diets.
Methods
Parents of 1,032 children (age 5–14 years, 48% girls) completed a time use diary each day for 14-days during school (April/May) and again in summer …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely studied due to their persistence, prevalence, and harmful effects on human and environmental health. Key challenges include improving detection methodologies, such as lowering detection limits, and developing more sensitive and selective approaches. Given the ubiquity of PFAS, effective sensing must be paired with remediation strategies that transform these pollutants into value-added or less toxic products. This perspective explores recent advances in electrochemical PFAS detection, highlighting challenges and future opportunities.

Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Sexual violence has become increasingly visible in the public eye, which has in turn prompted scholarly research across disciplines to critically examine how such cases are handled, ranging from the investigation processes to how the accused and accusing parties are impacted. Linguistic research in particular has made an important contribution to our understanding of the role of language in interpreting and evaluating sexual violence by focusing on the narrations of specific cases. Yet linguistic perspectives are somewhat sparse with regard to mass media discourse, which can play an influential role in shaping discussions on sexual violence. This study examines discourse …

Uveal melanoma (UM) is a rare but frequently metastasizing cancer. Genome-wide association studies have identified three common genome-wide significant germline risk loci. Here, we perform a genome-wide association study on 401 new cases and conduct a meta-analysis with three independent previously published cohorts for a total sample size of 2,426 cases. We confirm the three previously identified risk loci and identify four additional genome-wide significant loci. We find that eye pigmentation-decreasing variants are systematically associated with increased UM risk and that selection for lighter pigmentation in the past 5,000 years explains about 73% of the difference in UM incidence between …

Integrase-Deficient Lentiviral Vector As A Platform For Efficient Crispr/Cas9-Mediated Gene Editing For Mucopolysaccharidosis Iva, Fnu Nidhi, Shunji Tomatsu
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is a lysosomal storage disorder causing systemic skeletal dysplasia due to a deficiency of N-acetyl-galactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS) enzyme activity, leading to the impaired degradation and accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), keratan sulfate (KS) and chondroitin-6-sulfate. While treatments such as enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are available, they have significant limitations regarding efficacy in skeletal tissues and long-term safety, highlighting the need for more effective therapies. We evaluated a novel gene therapy approach using a dual Integrase-deficient lentiviral vector (IDLV) to deliver an expression cassette that includes human GALNS cDNA and Cas9 sgRNA, …

Mesopelagic zone (MZ) carbon budgets comparing supply with demand can be difficult to constrain due to the temporal and spatial offsets between key sources and sinks, their associated uncertainties, and potential sampling biases. To address these challenges, the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) campaign increased the number and variety of simultaneous measurements to monitor temporal variability in the MZ carbon budget using both a Lagrangian frame of reference and long-term autonomous observations. In this study, we collate a comprehensive combination of new and previously published organic carbon supply and demand measurements collected from the surface (5 …

Oscillatory Flow Improves Hydrodynamic Ordering Of Soft Suspensions In Rectangular Channels, Paul C. Millett
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A computational study is presented that examines the hydrodynamic ordering of soft-particle suspensions within rectangular channels undergoing both steady and oscillatory flow. In these conditions, particles assemble into one-dimensional train-like configurations aligned in the flow direction. The results indicate that oscillatory flow facilitates a significant improvement in the ordering process, particularly for the assembly of multiple side-by-side trains within the channel. Several key parameters are systematically varied, including the Wolmersley number (Wo) representing the oscillatory frequency, the capillary number (Ca) representing the particle deformability, and the particle volume fraction (phi). It is found that optimal ordering occurs for a particular …

Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
North American regimes of industrial legality provide workers with protected rights to organize, bargain collectively, and strike. However, they also limit the freedom to strike. Trade unions commonly accept and enforce these limits but at great cost to solidarity and militancy. This article examines the many ways law works against labour by restricting the freedom to strike and explores the practice of unlawful strikes in North America, including recent examples that resulted in successful outcomes. It concludes with reflections on the revival of unlawful strikes as a tactic for rebuilding and remobilizing the North American labour movement. While the article’s …

BACKGROUND: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) presents a major clinical challenge in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), requiring lower extremity revascularization (LER) to mitigate adverse cardiovascular and limb outcomes. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) has been implicated in cardiovascular risk, but its role in patients with T2DM and CLTI undergoing revascularization remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of Lp(a) levels in diabetic CLTI patients for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), major adverse limb events (MALE), or both after LER.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study of 158 individuals with T2DM and CLTI undergoing LER, baseline clinical data …

Mars’ south polar cap hosts dynamic landforms known as Swiss cheese features (SCFs), which form through the sublimation of carbon dioxide (CO2) ice driven by the planet’s extreme seasonal and diurnal solar insolation cycles. These shallow, rounded depressions—first identified by Mars Global Surveyor in 1999 and later monitored by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)—have been observed to increase in size over time. However, large-scale analysis of SCF formation and growth has been limited by the slow and labor-intensive nature of manual mapping techniques. This study applies object-based image analysis (OBIA) to automate the detection and measurement of SCFs using High-Resolution …
