Dnp Project: Research Study Using Mindfulness Meditation For Stress Reduction In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jennifer Williams
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Undergraduate nursing students often experience high stress from academic rigor, clinical demands, and personal challenges, contributing to mental health concerns and increased attrition. Unmanaged stress, when met with insufficient coping strategies, may contribute to students failing, leaving, or withdrawing from a nursing program. This research project addressed the need for a structured coping strategy within the curriculum at a State College to promote student resilience and reduce stress. As a quality improvement process change, the project’s purpose was to evaluate the impact of a four-week mindfulness meditation (MM) intervention on perceived stress levels of first-semester Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) …

The Effects Of A Geopolitical Policy—Case Study Of “Korea Limitation Order” Upon The Cultural Entertainment Industry In China, Zhilin Li
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs
This paper examines the impact on the South Korean Cultural Entertainment Indus- try(CEI) of China’s “Korea Limitation Order”. In November 2016, Beijing restricted South Korean artists from holding concerts and the broadcast of South Korean TV dramas and banned cooperation between the two countries in the entertainment in- dustries. This paper focuses on the effect this had on exports of cultural products and relating industries from Korea, and how Korea was able to adjust to this geopolitical shock. I examine exports from Korea to China, Japan, and the United States using data from Cultural Entertainment Industry Products Exports, such as …
Does Bilingualism On Resumes Affect Callback Rates?, Autumn Halfpenny
Does Bilingualism On Resumes Affect Callback Rates?, Autumn Halfpenny
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs
I study the influence of bilingualism in Spanish on the likelihood of receiving a callback for female customer service positions in the Chicago area. Data are collected from sixteen unique resumes submitted to 131 different job postings in an audit study, with applicants differing in bilingual ability. Bilingualism in Spanish significantly in- creases the likelihood of a callback by 17.86%-25.4%, implying bilingualism is valued in customer service roles. This suggests that bilingualism in Spanish may increase job prospects. While previous research studies this using observational and survey data, I use an audit study design with resumes to obtain causal results. …
The Effects Of Pandemic School Closures On Standardized Testing Outcomes: Evidence From Connecticut, Michael Manieri
The Effects Of Pandemic School Closures On Standardized Testing Outcomes: Evidence From Connecticut, Michael Manieri
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs
During the Covid-19 pandemic, schools around the nation closed to prevent the virus’s spread. Following these closures, students’ performance on standardized exams worsened. Using a two-way fixed effect model with district and year fixed effects, I examine if the use of non-traditional schooling modes (i.e. hybrid and virtual) during the pandemic is associated with lower ELA and Math proficiency rates in Connecticut public schools. I find that Connecticut public school districts’ Math and ELA pass rates on the annual Smarter Balanced exam significantly decreased as they used higher levels of virtual and hybrid education. The magnitude of this decrease was …

This paper investigates the combined potential of neuromorphic and edge computing to develop a flexible machine learning (ML) system designed for processing data from dynamic vision sensors. We build and train hybrid models that integrate spiking neural networks (SNNs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) using the PyTorch and Lava frameworks. We explore the effects of quantization on ANN models to assess its impact on both accuracy and energy efficiency. Additionally, we address the challenges of deploying hybrid models on hardware by implementing individual components on specific edge platforms. We also propose an accumulator circuit to bridge the spiking and non-spiking …
Understanding And Evaluating Genomic Language Models, Aadit Kapoor
Understanding And Evaluating Genomic Language Models, Aadit Kapoor
Master's Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in interpreting complex patterns across various domains, yet their application to genomic data remains limited. We see great potential in leveraging LLMs for vital biological tasks, such as predicting transcription factor binding sites and identifying antibiotic-resistant genes. This emergent behavior positions LLMs as powerful tools for enhancing our understanding of intricate biological language. LLMs trained specifically on genomic data, such as DNA sequences, operate distinctly compared to those trained on natural language. This difference is evident not only in the architectural landscape of the models but also in the methodologies employed by …

Characterizing And Modeling The Nonlinear Behavior Of Additively Manufactured Trapped-Powder Dampers, Jonathan Knight Black
Characterizing And Modeling The Nonlinear Behavior Of Additively Manufactured Trapped-Powder Dampers, Jonathan Knight Black
Theses and Dissertations
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) can be used to create metal parts with pockets of retained, unfused powder that serve as mechanical dampers. These trapped-powder dampers show promise for reducing the amplitude of vibrations at resonance by orders of magnitude. However, little is currently understood about the nonlinearity and repeatability of trapped-powder dampers, meaning that the design process currently consists of expensive trial-and-error prototyping and iteration. The present work contributes a corpus of experimental measurements for rectangular beams with trapped-powder dampers of various dimensions and locations. Preliminary testing revealed the presence of a memory effect which we hypothesize to be …
Investigating Radiation Induced Rowhammer And Retention Failures In Dram, Tyler Ricks
Investigating Radiation Induced Rowhammer And Retention Failures In Dram, Tyler Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
It is desirable for DRAM devices to be used in harsh radiation environments. Exposure to radiation causes DRAM cells to lose their retention time as their ability to store charge effectively declines. Exposure also worsens the effect of disturbance that causes neighboring cells to flip when a row is opened multiple times: an effect known as the Row Hammer Effect. This thesis evaluates the impact of radiation-induced memory cell degradation by comparing memory cell's retention time and their resilience to the row hammer vulnerability. Three generations of DRAM were placed under a neutron radiation beam. Sections of the irradiated devices …
Remote Running Gait Analysis Using Smartphone Video And Monocular Pose Estimation: A Feasibility Study, Luke Vankeersbilck
Remote Running Gait Analysis Using Smartphone Video And Monocular Pose Estimation: A Feasibility Study, Luke Vankeersbilck
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Running is a common form of exercise that comes with many health benefits; however, many people stop exercising because of the high injury risk. Running injury is connected with biomechanical risk factors. Yet, these risk factors often show inconsistent and conflicting results across studies, largely due to small sample sizes limiting statistical power. Low subject numbers may be partly due to the time requirements of traditional motion capture. Monocular pose estimation offers a promising alternative by using machine learning to track body landmarks from a single camera. This study evaluated the feasibility of remotely collecting running biomechanics data using …

Controlled-Airflow Sensor Enclosure (Case) Design Document, Catryn N. Cattoor
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The purpose of this document is to organize the theory, industry practices, and research related to designing a device that pulls air through a pipe, containing an environmental sensor, at a rate controlled by a computer fan. Using such a device to regulate the airflow over a sensor can improve the accuracy of field readings, as sensors are often unintentionally sensitive to multiple external conditions. Changes in wind direction and speed or heating due to solar radiation, for example, can cause errors in gas concentration and temperature readings, warranting the need to correct for these factors without decoupling these sensors …
Work Extracting And Second Law-Like Inequalities From Non-Extensive Small Systems With Feedback, Mehdi Mirzaee, Saman Amiri
Work Extracting And Second Law-Like Inequalities From Non-Extensive Small Systems With Feedback, Mehdi Mirzaee, Saman Amiri
Turkish Journal of Physics
The Gibbs-Boltzmann entropy effectively characterizes systems with a significant reliance on initial conditions. Nonetheless, the majority of materials generally exhibit behavior that is independent of their initial conditions. Conversely, Tsallis entropy—a nonextensive entropy that underpins nonextensive statistical mechanics—provides a comprehensive framework for modeling systems that engage with their environment. In this study, we derive the Tsallis formulation of the Clausius inequality in a quantum context and establish an upper limit for the work that can be extracted from a small system within the framework of nonextensive quantum statistical mechanics. Furthermore, by utilizing a principle from quantum information theory—which posits that …

Foster Kinship, a Nevada-based nonprofit, operates under the belief that “When children cannot be with their parents, they should be with their family” (Foster Kinship, 2022). It supports kinship caregivers, who often take in children during a crisis, in navigating the foster care system. The organization’s Kinship Navigator Program offers training, case management, and licensing support to kinship caregivers, enabling them to access financial assistance and other benefits. However, many caregivers who complete the training do not finish the licensing process, limiting placement stability and access to resources for the children. Understanding why kinship caregivers trained through the Foster Kinship …

Under The Sea And Into The Future With Darwin, Verne, & Wells: Evolutionary Ideas In Early Science Fiction Literature And Atomic Age Adaptations, Suzette K. Forston
Theses and Dissertations
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin's theories challenged traditional ways of thinking about the world so dramatically that his writings inspired the formation of a new genre: science fiction. Two pioneering authors, Jules Verne and H. G. Wells drew from Darwin's writings in their classic novels, 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas (1870) and The Time Machine (1895). Though the two authors are often compared because they were both early science fiction authors, they approached Darwinian theory in different ways. Verne uses a more extrapolative approach and focusing on specific details of Darwin's texts to tell a …

A quantitative understanding of local transmission dynamics is essential for designing effective prevention strategies. In this study, we developed a computational workflow to identify viral introductions and trace locally circulating clusters. We analyzed over 26,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes and their associated metadata, collected between January and October 2021, to explore introduction and local dispersal patterns in Greater Houston, a major metropolitan area known for its demographic diversity. Our analysis identified more than 1,000 independent introduction events, resulting in clusters of varying sizes. The majority of introductions originated from domestic sources, while international introductions occurred earlier and were associated with larger cluster …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Pain is the most common complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). The underlying biology of SCD pain is not well understood, which is a barrier to novel, effective analgesic and preventive therapies. A wide variability in the phenotypic expression of pain exists among individuals with SCD, despite the inheritance of a similar defective hemoglobin gene. This interindividual pain variability further complicates the ability to understand the biology and effectively treat pain. We sought to discover a biological signature comprising differentially expressed genes unique to SCD that could differentiate between individuals with varied pain frequency. We conducted plasma-induced transcription analysis from …

Objective: The common gain-of-function variant rs35705950, located in the promoter of MUC5B gene, has been strongly associated with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) of different aetiology, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and rheumatoid arthritis-associated ILD (RA-ILD). In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of this variant and its nearby single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the largest cohort of systemic sclerosis-associated ILD (SSc-ILD) to date.
Methods: Samples were collected from blood/saliva, followed by DNA extraction and genotyping using SNP arrays. Data for rs35705950 and additional 903 variants within 100 Kb were obtained using genomic imputation. Subsequently, we tested their …
Computational And Mathematical Modeling Of Microbial Community And Host Responses To Microbiota-Directed Complementary Foods Administered To Children With Acute Malnutrition., Steven J. Hartman
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Globally, millions of children suffer from undernutrition, with stunting affecting 150 million and wasting nearly 50 million under five years old. Current interventions have shown limited effectiveness in mitigating long-term consequences such as stunted growth, cognitive deficits, and immune dysfunction. Through this body of work, I investigated the efficacy of a microbiota- directed complementary food (MDCF-2) as a next generation therapeutic food to combat childhood stunting. Across two randomized controlled trials involving Bangladeshi children with either moderate acute malnutrition or post-severe acute malnutrition, MDCF-2 significantly outperformed standard ready-to-use supplementary foods (RUSF), leading to significantly improved ponderal and sustained linear growth …
First-Year Writing Student Perceptions Of Graduate Student Instructor Authority, Lacey Madison Hamilton
First-Year Writing Student Perceptions Of Graduate Student Instructor Authority, Lacey Madison Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations
Graduate student instructors (GSIs) are trusted to teach first-year writing (FYW) courses across U.S. campuses, yet many still wonder how their undergraduate students actually perceive their authority, especially when they're new to teaching or sharing a classroom with full-time faculty. While previous research has explored how GSIs view their own authority and how institutional structures shape their roles, we know far less about what students of these GSIs think. This study aims to fill that gap. Building on Reed and Ostenson's work in Big Comp, I conducted a mixed-methods study in Fall 2024 to hear directly from FYW students about …

The Face Of Fluent Reading: Using Eye Tracking And Spectrographic Analysis Of Prosody To Predict Comprehension, Hannah Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of the current study was to examine the contributions of oral and silent reading fluency to comprehension in grade four students (N = 192). Participants were administered grade-level CBM probes and i-Ready Diagnostic measures of comprehension. Eye movements, spectrographic measures of prosody, reading rate, and accuracy were extracted from the CBM readings. A two-factor measurement model was proposed, with an oral reading fluency factor and a silent reading fluency factor. Additionally, a mediation model was proposed to consider oral contributions to silent reading (and, subsequently, comprehension). Results instead supported a bifactor model, indicating a general reading fluency factor …
Cross-Cultural Dialogue In Sound: An Analytical Exploration Of Tan Dun’S Elegy: Snow In June, Weipeng Liu
Cross-Cultural Dialogue In Sound: An Analytical Exploration Of Tan Dun’S Elegy: Snow In June, Weipeng Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores Tan Dun’s cross-cultural synthesis in contemporary music, focusing on his work Elegy: Snow in June (1991) to illuminate his role in redefining global musical dialogues. Situating Tan Dun within the broader trajectory of Chinese-Western musical encounters, the research addresses gaps in existing scholarship by integrating historical, analytical, and performative perspectives. Through meticulous score analysis, cultural-historical contextualization, and insights from performance practice, the study reveals how Tan Dun hybridizes Chinese pentatonic modes with Western harmonic frameworks, subverts orchestral hierarchies through unique timbres (such as stones and paper), and synthesizes Beijing opera’s jinda, manchang (“hasty stroke with slow singing”) …

Digital Trading Platform Selection Under Neutrosophic Numbers And Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methodology: An Illustrative Example, Eman Sayed, Karam M. Sallam, Ibrahim Alrashdi
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Uncertainty, vagueness, and incomplete information are pervasive in real-world decision-making scenarios, particularly in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) contexts involving expert judgments. To address these challenges, this study introduces a comprehensive decision-making framework that integrates Triangular Neutrosophic Numbers (TNNs) with the Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) method. The framework begins by capturing expert evaluations using TNNs, which effectively represent the degrees of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity inherent in subjective assessments. These evaluations are then transformed into crisp values using a novel score function that preserves the embedded uncertainty. The resulting decision matrices are aggregated into a unified structure to ensure consistency …

BACKGROUND: Externalizing and internalizing disorders are common in youth but are often studied separately, preventing researchers from identifying shared (i.e., transdiagnostic) alterations in brain structure. Using data from the ENIGMA Consortium, we conducted a mega-analysis to identify shared and distinct cortical and subcortical brain alterations across internalizing (anxiety disorders and depression) and externalizing disorders (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] and conduct disorder [CD]) in youth.
METHODS: 3D T1-weighted MRI data from youth (aged 4-21 years) with anxiety disorders (n=1,044), depression (n=504), ADHD (n=1,317), and CD (n=1,172), along with healthy controls (n=4,743) were analyzed. We assessed group differences in regional cortical thickness, surface …

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common cyanotic congenital heart defect (CHD). TOF may present in isolation or in conjunction with one or more non-cardiac congenital anomalies or neurodevelopmental disorders (TOF+). Uncertainty regarding the efficacy of various genetic testing strategies, and an incomplete understanding of the genetic causes of TOF+, may lead to hesitancy in recommending genetic testing, particularly, clinical exome sequencing (cES). Here, we analyzed cES data from 131 individuals with TOF+. A definitive or probable diagnosis was made for 31 individuals, yielding a diagnostic rate of 23.6% (31/131). One individual received three diagnoses. Commercially available CHD panels …
