Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is notoriously known for its high mortality and morbidity. Approximately one-third of the patients who survive aneurysm rupture are reported to develop delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), which contributes to a poor clinical outcome. Currently, there are no biomarkers for identifying which aSAH patients are at risk of developing DCI. We aimed to determine the feasibility of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) for predicting DCI post-aSAH.
Methods: aSAH patients were prospectively enrolled, and CSF samples were collected at two time points (< 24 h and 72 h post-aSAH) from individuals undergoing external ventricular drainage. Exosomal miRNAs were isolated from the CSF for analysis. In the initial group of patients (discovery cohort), an exploratory analysis was conducted using a CSF panel containing 84 miRNAs, assessed by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Based on this analysis, 27 miRNAs were selected for further evaluation in a second group of patients (validation cohort). Among these, 10 miRNAs had previously been reported in SAH-related CSF studies, supporting their relevance for continued investigation.
Results: In this study, RT-qPCR analysis of 84 miRNAs in CSF samples from …

Preliminary experimentation has suggested that a research-use-only real-time transcription-mediated amplification assay for Treponema pallidum (RUO T. pallidum TMA) yields instances of T. pallidum nucleic acid detection that coincide with non-treponemal serology in men who have sex with men (MSM) at increased risk for sexually transmitted infection. To further characterize the specificity of RUO T. pallidum TMA testing, 3,586 rectal swab specimens reported as “not detected” by the assay generated a mean endpoint FAM fluorescence of 637.5 units. Introduction of Treponema denticola, Treponema phagedenis, and Treponema refringens nucleic acid into matrices generated mean endpoint FAM fluorescence ranging from 620.7 …

Rational Tactical Nuclear First Use In Asymmetric Dyads And The States' Calculus Of Costs In An Era Of Interdependence : A Game-Theoretical Approach, Chi Cheong Chiu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Classical nuclear deterrence theory suggests that nuclear powers could be tempted to strike first in asymmetric dyads (dyads in which only one side is a nuclear power). However, in the Ukraine war, a nuclear-armed Russia has not deployed tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield, even at times when its military struggles on the ground with unfavorable balance. Why has Russia not used its nuclear weapons, especially after repeated threats of using them? What conditions make it rational for states to cross the nuclear threshold in asymmetric dyads? What discourages them from using nuclear weapons while possessing nuclear monopoly?
Expected utility …
Cybersecurity: Digital Stewardship In A Violent World, Rocky K. C. Chang
Cybersecurity: Digital Stewardship In A Violent World, Rocky K. C. Chang
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This paper defines cybersecurity based on the principle of biblical stewardship. The focus of this principle is God, not the technologies, who is the creator and owner of cyberspace and everything in it. Humankind is called by God to steward them by protecting the digital property of our neighbors in cyberspace from malicious attacks. In the context of cybersecurity, a neighbor can be any individual cyber user, practitioner, educator, organization, tech company, or even hacker. However, as argued from the perspectives of human sin and human finitude, the defending stewards can never win over evil in this spiritual battle. Instead, …

Chronic airway inflammation with variable airflow obstruction is clinical asthma, and it arises from distinct molecular and pathological mechanisms called endotypes. Biomarkers allow for precise endotype characterization and have been used in clinical trials to design, monitor, and evaluate outcomes for asthma biologic therapies. This review will highlight the central and evolving role of biomarkers for past, present, and future asthma, with a focus on regulatory-approved biologic therapies and emerging biomarkers. Established biomarkers, including serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), blood eosinophils, the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and serum periostin, helped elucidate the complex pathophysiology of the eosinophilic type 2 …

Human norovirus (HuNoV) causes acute gastroenteritis in immunocompetent hosts and chronic infection in immunocompromised individuals. Many recent studies of replication and innate immune responses following HuNoV infection have utilized epithelium-only human intestinal enteroids (HIEs), which lack immune cells. Here, we utilized an ex vivo enteroid-macrophage coculture model consisting of HIEs and different subtypes of human peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived macrophages to better recapitulate in vivo gut biology and explore the role of macrophages in HuNoV replication and pathogenesis. We show that HuNoV infection in HIEs polarized on Transwells leads to bilateral release of the viral genome, with predominant apical virus …

Does Teach Lead To More Teachers? Evaluating The Effects Of The Federal Teach Program, Daniel Sparks
Does Teach Lead To More Teachers? Evaluating The Effects Of The Federal Teach Program, Daniel Sparks
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Teachers are critical to education production. Yet, recruiting and retaining teachers has remained challenging, particularly in high need fields, at schools serving a high proportion of students from low-income backgrounds, and from racially diverse backgrounds. To incentivize enrollment in teacher preparation programs and to support teacher candidates through degree completion, the federal government implemented the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant in 2008. The TEACH Grant offers undergraduate and graduate students up to $16,000 and $8,000 in grant aid, respectively, to pursue degrees in high need teaching fields. I use difference-in-differences analyses to estimate the effects …

Snake Spirits, Fishermen And Water Birds On Lake Victoria: A Case Study Of Cultural Conservation In The Musambwa Islands, Uganda, And Prospects For Tourism To Improve Local Livelihoods, Joel T. Heinen, Henry Batenda
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Abstract.
Using a combination of site visits, document reviews, focus group and key informant surveys of fishermen, we explore the cultural beliefs, taboos and norms that protect Musambwa Islands, Uganda. The islands form part of a large protected wetland with nesting habitat for thousands of water birds and a large population of highly-venomous forest cobras that coexist in and around fishermen dwellings. There are strong taboos against cutting trees, allowing women on the island, and harming cobras. We present some of our ideas on how to improve the economic situation of fishermen through the promotion of nature-based and cultural tourism …
A Place For Ancient Philosophy In Axial Age Historiography, John R. Shook
A Place For Ancient Philosophy In Axial Age Historiography, John R. Shook
Comparative Philosophy
Long-standing debates over historiographical approaches to the Axial Age have distracted the history of philosophy from its own disciplined inquiry into the breadth and depth of ancient thought beyond the Greeks. The philosopher Karl Jaspers offered a vista for seeing commonalities among ancient innovations and discerning continuities along history to modern times. That dual agenda divided Axial historiography with the question of whether axiality reflects creativities of ancient systems or have modern reflections created images of axiality. A singular chronology for humanity encourages a mode of philosophical history open to providential designs, epochal turns, spiritual evolutions, psychological leaps, or cognitive …
Moral And Ethical Nature In Confucian Liang-Zhi And Islamic Fitra: Comparative Perspectives On Innate Morality, Yanrong Shi
Moral And Ethical Nature In Confucian Liang-Zhi And Islamic Fitra: Comparative Perspectives On Innate Morality, Yanrong Shi
Comparative Philosophy
This article offers a comparative philosophical analysis of Confucian liang-zhi (innate moral knowledge) and Islamic fitra(primordial nature), focusing on their accounts of innate morality and moral epistemology. Drawing on classical Confucian sources—especially the praxis-oriented interpretation of Wang Yangming—and foundational Islamic texts and commentary, the study demonstrates that both traditions posit an inborn moral faculty grounding ethical universality and responsibility. Wang Yangming’s liang-zhi is conceived as an innate moral principle that, under the imperative of zhi (to actualize or extend), is continually activated through moral practice. In parallel, fitra is understood as a God-given orientation to truth, cultivated and safeguarded through …
A Constructive Engagement Between Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy And Latin American & Latine Liberatory Philosophy, Alessandro R. Moscaritolo Palacio
A Constructive Engagement Between Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy And Latin American & Latine Liberatory Philosophy, Alessandro R. Moscaritolo Palacio
Comparative Philosophy
In this paper, I bring into dialogue a movement in Latin American social and political philosophy – which I have named Latin American and Latine Liberatory Philosophy – and a Western, or more precisely global North, philosophical movement sometimes called Ordinary Language Philosophy. By ‘Latin American and Latine Liberatory Philosophy’, I refer to a movement, adumbrated at the dawn of the 19th century and developed during the 20th century, whose guiding theme is the political, social, and cultural liberation of Latin America (and global South peoples more generally). By ‘Ordinary Language Philosophy’, on the other hand, I refer …

How Theravāda Buddhism Enriches The Language Of Thought Hypothesis: Beyond Syntax, Juanjuan Cheng, Sumanasara Sandamadulle
Comparative Philosophy
The Language of Thought Hypothesis (LOTH) posits that mental states operate through a language-like representational system physically implemented in the brain. However, this purely symbolic approach faces a significant limitation: certain mental phenomena—such as intuitions, emotions, and intentions—lack the syntactically compositional structure required by LOTH and therefore cannot be adequately explained within its symbolic framework. To address this theoretical challenge, we turn to Theravāda Buddhism (TB), an early Buddhist tradition that integrates rigorous philosophical inquiry with meditative practice. Remarkably, TB began to prefigure a solution to LOTH’s limitations over 2,300 years ago. Although LOTH and TB differ …
Romanticism In Tolkien’S The Hobbit: Nature And Domestic Life As A Force For Good, James J. Schultz
Romanticism In Tolkien’S The Hobbit: Nature And Domestic Life As A Force For Good, James J. Schultz
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien’s works tend to be viewed by both the public and by scholars through the lens of religious moralism, or else in the context of medievalism, such as with Tom Shippey’s arguments in The Road to Middle Earth. While these take much into consideration in their arguments, these and other works tend to ignore the influences of the Romantic literary movement on Tolkien’s work. This movement, lasting from the late 1700s to the early 1800s, held ideals like beauty and nature in the highest regard. This is seen in some of the most famous works of its time, such …

Unlocking Reading Success: Addressing The Literacy Crisis In The United States, Jennifer Kaczrowski-Taylor
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
This white paper addresses the literacy crisis in the United States. Currently, in the educational system, millions of children lack access to research-based reading instruction and, as a result, struggle to become proficient readers. Despite decades of academic and reform efforts, national reading achievement has been declining. This literacy crisis can be traced back to outdated or inconsistent instructional practices, socioeconomic background, lack of research-based instructional curricula, as well as inconsistent and ineffective implementation of these approaches. Based on recent research and national data, this white paper advocates for aligning teacher education and professional development with the Science of Reading. …
An Exploratory Study Of Soft Skills Development Expectations In Two-Year Generation Z College Students, Kelli Hallsten Erickson
An Exploratory Study Of Soft Skills Development Expectations In Two-Year Generation Z College Students, Kelli Hallsten Erickson
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Workplace demands around competent demonstration of soft skills have been steadily increasing; therefore, institutions of higher education have started focusing attention on instilling these skills within their student populations. The latest generational cohort to enter college and the workforce, Generation Z, has only recently begun to be studied for the impact of its members’ attitudes towards work and how those might change employer expectations around soft skills. A research gap exists, however, regarding students in Generation Z attending two-year schools and which soft skills they feel are most valuable to their future careers. This study sought to explore those attitudes …

In this study, we present evidence for the validity of a shortened form of the Quantitative Reasoning for College Science (QuaRCS) Assessment, a validated instrument assessing the numeracy and math-related affect of undergraduate students in general education/introductory science courses. Previously published analyses of QuaRCS data revealed that 1) roughly 30% of students found the assessment boring, leading to lower self-reported effort and 2) affective factors (e.g. numerical self-efficacy) were significant predictors of QuaRCS score. As a result, we reduced the length of the assessment from 25 to 15 quantitative items, and expanded the affective variable selection from three to eight …

AND CHARACTER-FOCUSED CURRICULUM:
A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY
Don Jason Hoover
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of former middle school students who participated in a two-year character development, career readiness, and leadership program implemented in a public junior high school. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory, the study focused on how students experienced and internalized the program’s components, which included leadership training, social learning activities, and college and career readiness preparation. The research was conducted using semistructured interviews with 10 participants who had completed the …
