Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is a rare, life-threatening disease with acquired pancytopenia and hypocellular bone marrow. ESCALATE evaluated eltrombopag in combination with immunosuppressive therapy (IST) in pediatric patients (aged 1 to < 18 years) with relapsed/refractory (R/R) or treatment-naïve SAA. The eltrombopag starting dose was 25 mg/d for patients aged 1 to < 6 years and 50 mg/d for patients aged 6 to < 18 years; dose modifications (maximum dose, 150 mg/d) were allowed to achieve a target platelet count of 50 × 109/L to 200 × 109/L. Eltrombopag was administered with cyclosporine A, with or without horse antithymocyte globulin, for 26 weeks and could be extended if clinically beneficial. Fifty-one patients were treated (R/R SAA, n = 14; treatment-naïve SAA, n = 37). Data were analyzed overall and as 2 cohorts: R/R and treatment-naïve cohorts. The overall response rate (ORR; per North American Pediatric Aplastic Anemia Consortium criteria) at 26 weeks was 54.9% in both cohorts combined and 71.4% and 48.6% in the R/R and treatment-naïve cohorts, respectively; most responders had sustained responses after discontinuing eltrombopag. Among baseline transfusion-dependent patients, 66.7% and 76.7% achieved red blood cell and platelet transfusion independence, respectively, with rates of 70% and 80% for the R/R cohort and 65.6% and 75.8% for the treatment-naïve cohort, respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse events were abnormalities in liver function tests, including increased bilirubin (43.1%), alanine aminotransferase (37.3%), and aspartate aminotransferase (33.3%). Eltrombopag with IST showed a trend toward a favorable ORR in the R/R cohort, with no new safety signals.

Relapse of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) remains the primary source of mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). Targeting programmed death-1 (PD-1) for reversing T-cell exhaustion and restoring the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect may have logistical advantages over donor lymphocyte infusion. In a prospective phase 1B clinical trial, pembrolizumab was administered every 3 weeks to 16 patients with AML (n = 12) and MDS (n = 4) in relapse after HCT to assess graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), clinical response, and survival. The median time to relapse after HCT was 5.5 months and the median pretreatment bone marrow …

The Effects Of Forest Bathing On Anxiety In Adults: An Integrative Review, Nancyruth Leibold Aug 2025

The Effects Of Forest Bathing On Anxiety In Adults: An Integrative Review, Nancyruth Leibold

General Submissions: Non-Traditional Settings and Methods

The aim of this study is to explore the effects of forest bathing on anxiety levels in adults. An abundance of forest bathing research evidence is present in the literature. There are documented physiological and psychological benefits from walking or spending time in forest nature. Yet, there are still many unanswered questions about the health benefits of forest bathing for humans. In this study, an integrated review of forest bathing specific to the effect on anxiety levels in adults is the focus. A thorough search of six electronic databases (CINAHL, Health and Medical Collection, OVID, Pub Med, Public Health Database, …

Developing Cross-Cultural Competence And Media Literacy Through Multi-Modal Instruction And Projects, Michelle Verbitskaya, Alla Kourova, Irina Pidberejna

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

We explore the integration of Media Literacy in the 2-year Russian language STARTALK program, “How Words Shape People: Understanding Business Russian Through Proverbs.” Given the current geopolitical climate, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine, fostering critical engagement with media has become more essential than ever. By encouraging students to interact with multimedia resources—including animated videos, podcasts, news articles, and the Russian National Corpora—the curriculum aims to enhance both language and media literacy skills. Media Literacy’s Five Key Framework is applied to guide students in analyzing media critically while producing academic projects and cultural responses. We present a curriculum that fosters …

Indigenous Business & Public Administration

The concept of and desire for well-being economies are rising in prevalence as traditional business paradigms are questioned and alternative framings are being sought. Indigenous peoples, their economies, and their approach to business can provide a rich source of learning to enable and help facilitate a transition to economies of well-being. As Indigenous peoples are emerging from their colonial pasts, they are becoming more empowered to make investment choices, use business models, and form partnerships grounded in their worldviews, which are often well aligned with a well-being economy.

In this paper, we note some of the obstacles Indigenous economies have …

Clinical And Demographic Predictors Of The Need For Pharmacotherapy In Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Shawana Bibi, Rachana Singh, Janis L. Breeze, Jason Nelson, Walter K. Kraft, Jonathan M. Davis

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Development and validation of a clinical prediction model for receipt of pharmacotherapy for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS).

STUDY DESIGN: Data from three cohorts included

RESULTS: Of 698 infants included, 430 received pharmacotherapy. The final model included seven predictors of receipt of pharmacotherapy: gestational age, exposure to maternal breast milk, type of maternal opioid medication, and exposure to heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and/or antipsychotic medications. The model had an AUROC of 0.68 (95% CI: 0.64-0.72; optimism corrected 0.65).

CONCLUSION: Our prediction model was parsimonious and identified seven predictors associated with the need for PT. Larger cohort studies are needed to more …

Circadian Influences On Glycemic Control In 24-Hr Fasts Initiated At Different Mealtimes, Elizabeth Z. Gipson Aug 2025

Circadian Influences On Glycemic Control In 24-Hr Fasts Initiated At Different Mealtimes, Elizabeth Z. Gipson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether the timing of a 24-hour fast influences indicators of glycemic control throughout the duration of the fast or upon refeeding. Twenty-four adults who have overweight or obesity (13 female, 11 male) completed this randomized crossover study involving three 24-hour fasts initiated at either 8:00 am, 1:00 pm, or 6:00 pm followed by a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) which lasted 2 hours. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) were employed to track interstitial glucose throughout each fast and OGTT. Plasma samples for insulin, glucagon, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) were collected at the …

Epitaxial Electrodeposition Of Cu-Btc Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films Onto The (100), (110), And (111) Surfaces Of Single-Crystal Gold And Cuprous Oxide Buffer Layers, Xiaoting Zhang, John Z. Tubbesing, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have well-defined pore structures. Epitaxial MOFs can produce films with uniform pore sizes and open porosity. However, the growth of epitaxial MOF thin films has remained a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a cathodic electrodeposition method for the epitaxial growth of a well-known MOF material, copper (II)-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC), from solution precursors. The epitaxial electrodeposition of Cu-BTC was achieved in a Cu (NO3)2-H3BTC-H2O2 bath using H2O2 reduction to deprotonate the H3BTC molecule. The Cu-BTC films can be grown to micrometer thicknesses with Faradaic efficiencies up …
