Lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) are a pressing global health problem with enduring lethality and rapidly shifting epidemiology. Proteogenomic studies integrating proteomics and post-translational modifications with genomics can identify clinical strata and oncogenic mechanisms, but have been underpowered to examine effects of ethnicity, smoking and environmental exposures, or sex on this heterogeneous disease. This comprehensive proteogenomic analysis of LUAD tumors and matched normal adjacent tissues from 406 patients across diverse geographic and demographic backgrounds explores the impact of understudied driver mutations, prognostic role of chromosomal instability, patterns of immune signaling, differential and sex-specific effects of endogenous mutagens and environmental carcinogens, and pathobiology …

Introduction: Snakebite-related deaths are major concerns in populations worldwide that lack access to medical care. Current treatment of snakebites includes administration of polyspecific and polyvalent heterologous equine antiserum. Swift diagnosis of the species of snake responsible is essential to initiate a specific treatment.

Methods: We generated murine monoclonal and rabbit polyclonal antibodies against the venom of the 3 most common venomous snakes in southern India: the Russell viper, the saw-scaled viper, and the Indian cobra. We developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to distinguish the snake by analyzing the exudates from the snakebite wound.

Results: Monoclonal antibody EC3 reacts specifically with …

Background: Children born with a congenital anomaly have a higher risk of developing a brain tumor during childhood or adolescence, but the co-occurrence between specific types of congenital anomalies and specific types of childhood brain tumors (CBTs) is not well described. This study characterized the associations between specific congenital anomalies and CBTs.

Methods: We leveraged a population-based registry linkage study of births (1990-2018), congenital anomalies, and cancer from 9 states (n = 22,599,099 births). Congenital anomalies were classified as major structural without a known chromosomal or genetic syndrome, chromosomal, neurofibromatosis, and/or tuberous sclerosis complex. CBT classification was based on the …

BACKGROUND: Unsupervised cognitive assessments are becoming commonly used in studies of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. As assessments are completed in everyday environments and without a proctor, there are concerns about how common distractions may impact performance and whether these distractions may differentially impact those experiencing the earliest symptoms of dementia.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the impact of self-reported interruptions, testing location, and social context during testing on remote cognitive assessments in older adults.

METHODS: Participants from the Ambulatory Research in Cognition smartphone study were classified as cognitively normal (n=380) or as having very mild dementia (n=37). Participants completed daily tests of …

The Missing Jury: The Neglected Role Of Juries In Eighth Amendment Punishments Clause Determinations, Meghan J. Ryan Sep 2025

The Missing Jury: The Neglected Role Of Juries In Eighth Amendment Punishments Clause Determinations, Meghan J. Ryan

Florida Law Review

A recent study of death penalty cases has revealed that judges, who are ordinarily thought of as the guardians of criminal defendants' constitutional rights, often impose harsher punishments than jurors. This may be unsettling in its own right, but it is especially concerning when one considers that judges are the individuals charged with determining whether punishments are unconstitutionally cruel and unusual under the Eighth Amendment and that these determinations are supposed to be based on society's evolving standards of decency. The study suggests that judges are out of step with society's moral norms, raising the question of why our justice …

From Relic To Relevance, The Resurgence Of Tariffs, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Doron Narotzki, Tamir Shanan

Law & Economics Working Papers

Modern legal scholarship has largely relegated tariffs to economic analysis, overlooking their legal and policy significance. This article challenges that view by examining tariffs as a potential pillar of fiscal policy, exploring their viability as a revenue source alongside or in place of traditional income and corporate taxation. While historically central to U.S. government funding, tariffs diminished in importance with the rise of income taxation and trade liberalization. However, their recent resurgence as a tool for trade protection raises broader questions about their role in national economic strategy. This article critically assesses the feasibility of a tariff-based tax system, drawing …

"The One Bright Spot Where All Else Is Dark And Hopeless." Images Of Class, Race And Culture In Britain's Imperial Education System During The Nineteenth Century, Jeff Grooms

The Ozark Historical Review

This paper outlines the ideologies that underpin the language of education, and the relationship between this language and educational policy in Britain and abroad. These topics illustrate that the abstraction of ‘civilization,’ and the themes of ‘darkness’ and ‘light’ that surround it, are an essential part of how nineteenth century sociocultural relations should be studied.

Recognizing And Reclaiming Indigenous Peoples’ Constitutional Land Rights In Brazil, Fernanda Frizzo Bragato, Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum Sep 2025

Recognizing And Reclaiming Indigenous Peoples’ Constitutional Land Rights In Brazil, Fernanda Frizzo Bragato, Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum

Book Chapters

In 2011, the Brazilian Government began dismantling the country’s robust framework for Indigenous land rights by enacting measures to deny Indigenous Peoples’ access to their ancestral lands. From 2019 to 2022, the government did not recognize or title a single hectare of Indigenous lands, despite more than 700 pending requests for demarcation (or formal designation and titling). A change in government and six land demarcations in 2023, however, show signs of a new era for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and relationship with the state. This chapter analyzes evolving Indigenous land rights pre- and post-constitutionalization in 1988, the result of intense political …

Experimental Study Of Local Heat Transfer During Downward Flow Condensation In Vertical Tube-In-Tube Annulus Channel, Jiayuan Li, Jayachandran K. Narayanan, Huigang Wang, Finnegan O'Leary, Xiaoyang Gao, Chirag R. Kharangate

Faculty Scholarship

Flow condensation is an important configuration in thermal management due to its efficiency in heat dissipation offered by both convective and phase-change heat transfers. Prior studies on flow condensation in literature focus on condensate flowing inside a tube, featuring the in-tube heat exchanger configuration. However, many common heat exchangers used across applications such as the shell-and-tube type see the condensate flowing on the outside the tube, featuring the outer-tube heat exchanger configuration. In this study, we experimentally investigate the local heat transfer behavior of the outer-tube downward flow condensation in a vertical tube-in-tube condensation module. The test module features a …

Harness The Power Of An Evidence-Based Practice Toolkit To Drive Nursing Ebp Competency, Margo A. Halm

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Good health and well-being for all people is a key United Nations (UN) sustainable development goal. Better health outcomes are achieved with evidence-based care. Yet, evidence-based practice (EBP) competency of U.S. nurses lags1 and EBP implementation in low-middle income countries is suboptimal to moderate.2 Nurses can commit to this UN's goal by achieving proficiency in EBP. While it could be argued education advances EBP competencies, clinician and system factors influence routine implementation of EBP.1,3,4

Objective: The purpose of this presentation is to increase awareness and adoption of a collection of valid and reliable EBP tools4 to …
