Background: What scares you the most about teaching? Is it not being able to connect with the students? In the United States (U.S.), students are being admitted to our nursing programs from international locations. As this world changes, we see more and more interactions with individuals from faraway places. English is no longer only spoken in a few countries. It is gaining worldwide popularity as a second language in many countries. Nursing students from overseas want to experience a nursing course taught in English. As an expert in your field, consider sharing your knowledge with students from other countries. …

The Prophet's Medicine: How Mormon Doctrine And Medical Practices Evolved Along The American Frontier, Drew Robinson
The Prophet's Medicine: How Mormon Doctrine And Medical Practices Evolved Along The American Frontier, Drew Robinson
The Ozark Historical Review
Joseph Smith rejected both the religious and medical orthodoxies of his day and developed his own theological systems while learning to rely solely on herbs for his medical care. His medical convictions regarding herbal medicine were as authoritative and binding for Mormons to practice as his religious revelations. However, by the time Brigham Young had become leader of the Mormons, regular medicine had become both modern and superior to other medical practices, including the Mormons’ herbal medicine. Though the use of herbal medicine had been codified into religious law by Smith, the benefits and availability of modern medicine earned the …

“Who Wrought It Slowly Long Ago” : Anonymity, The Unnamed, And The Ethical Use Of Objects Found On The Barrow-Downs, Nicholas Birns
Journal of Tolkien Research
This essay delves into the significance of two objects found by the Hobbits and Tom Bombadil on the Barrow-Downs in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." It considers how the sword found by Merry and the brooch with Tom Bombadil gives to Goldberry have different fates and tell different ethical stories. The essay contrasts the ethical implications of Merry's use of a sword from the Barrow-Downs, which plays a crucial role in the plot, with Goldberry's wearing of a brooch, raising questions about cultural appropriation and the moral reclamation of a artifacts The combination of the importance of these …
Britain And The Mediterranean: Empire And Culture In The Georgian-Victorian Era, James Brown
Britain And The Mediterranean: Empire And Culture In The Georgian-Victorian Era, James Brown
The Ozark Historical Review
I will examine the high age of British expansion into the Mediterranean – the mid- to late years of the Georgian- Victorian era. Since Britain’s imperialistic ventures were always intimately connected with domestic forces, I have chosen to divide my investigation into two main sections: the first analyzing the role of the Mediterranean, particularly Greece, in British culture and intellectual history prior to and during full-scale expansion, and the second presenting an account of Britain’s Mediterranean campaigns proper.
English King And German Commoner: An Exploration Of Sixteenth Century Clothing And Identity, Bradley Moore
English King And German Commoner: An Exploration Of Sixteenth Century Clothing And Identity, Bradley Moore
The Ozark Historical Review
There is perhaps no other external article which is more closely tied to one’s sense of identity than clothing. With a quick glance, one can readily gauge a person by their dress. So too, in the sixteenth century; clothing was used to construct identity, and in some cases to deconstruct it as well. This paper seeks to explore how identity and clothing are in many ways, inseparable. Concepts of religiosity, gender, nationalism, and “the other” were all intimately tied to dress and fashion. During the sixteenth century, perhaps even more strongly than now, clothing could be read like a book …
Assertions Of Monastic Identity And Power In The Cloister And Nave Of St. Gall, John D. Treat
Assertions Of Monastic Identity And Power In The Cloister And Nave Of St. Gall, John D. Treat
The Ozark Historical Review
The Carolingian monastery lived in an unresolved tension between the purity of separation from the world and the benefits to be gained from secular engagement. To confront this dilemma, the parts of the monastery received new layers of symbolic meaning, opening some spaces to lay penetration while shielding others more securely. Here I will examine the monastic cloister and the nave of the abbey church as instances of these two tendencies.

“It’S Like Mental Marginalization”: Stories Of Four Music Students At A Hispanic Serving Institution., Sarah Minette
Visions of Research in Music Education
Researchers have explored the ways in which P-12 teachers and students negotiate Latino/a/x/e cultural and musical identities in the classrooms (Abril, 2009; Lechuga & Schmidt, 2018; Palkki, 2015). While some have connected culturally responsive teaching to the needs of the growing number of Latino/a/x and Hispanic students in P-12 settings (Abril & Kelly-McHale, 2015), currently, no studies within music education address the experiences of music students at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), as well as the music making practices, curriculum, and faculty experiences at HSI. This case study examined how a music department at an HSI served the needs of its …

Autonomous Instrumental Music Learning On An Online Platform: How Is Study Motivation Related To Engagement And Study Outcomes?, Kai Tuuri, Jukka Vahlo, Oskari Koskela
Visions of Research in Music Education
Musical instruments have been recognized as attractive targets of volitionally developed long-term engagement. However, in music education research, the significance of autonomy in fostering learning motivation has mainly been perceived through the prism of student-teacher interaction. Addressing this gap, this study shifts the focus towards an autonomous learner perspective embracing the learner’s volitional approach and interest in engaging with musical instrument learning. Through an analysis of a survey sample (N=215) involving participants’ experiences with an online music learning platform, the study explores participants’ study motives and their association with study engagement, alongside the subsequent learning and wellbeing outcomes. An exploratory …

Pattison, Smirla Ramos Montañez, Viviana López Burgos, Gina Svarovsky, María Quijano, Amy Corbett, Catherine Wagner, Diana Contreras
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Existing evidence highlights the significance of family STEM learning experiences during early childhood. However, there is a lack of research specific to early childhood family-based learning in the field of engineering, especially with preschool-age children (three to five years old). To address this gap and inform engineering education programs for young children, we conducted a design-based research study in collaboration with 15 Spanish-and English-speaking families with preschool-age children from low-income communities. Our study aimed to develop and test a series of family-based engineering design activities while also identifying underlying design principles. Guided by an asset-based family learning framework, which acknowledges …

This essay presents a framework for evaluating a computer vision system providing perception for an uncrewed aircraft completing the automated air-to-air refueling (A3R) task. As the Department of Defense acquires capabilities that exhibit increasing levels of autonomy, the test and evaluation community must adapt the current framework to provide airworthiness officials the information required to accurately access the risks associated with the system underdoing testing. Following a brief introduction to A3R, this essay lays out a testing framework that leverages dendritic analysis and effectively deconstructs the critical issue into measurable data elements that can be used to support test and …

Seamless Playback Resumption For Musical Containers, John Oberbeck, Alan Bettes, Chunya Hua
Defensive Publications Series
Music streaming platforms do not typically provide the ability for users to resume listening to musical containers (albums, playlists, etc.) from the point where they last left off. This disclosure describes techniques that enable users to resume listening to musical containers, thereby solving the problem of continuity for music. The techniques enable users to browse older queues not currently being listened to and to resume playback across devices on finite containers while respecting a shuffled order. Furthermore, the techniques provide a visual user interface (UI) to identify a finite container or queue as being in-progress; a visual UI on the …

The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves
The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves
Dissertations
The history of social philosophy is a history of suspicion toward the aesthetic (1). However, since we apprehend social reality fundamentally through its aesthetic appearances, an account is needed of how “the aesthetic” must enter the social-philosophical discourse, particularly in reconstructive models of social critique. I call this account “social aesthetics.” Social aesthetics illuminates how certain social experiences generate normative claims even in the lack of discursive articulation. (2) I argue that the philosophy of recognition, concerned with this relationship between social experience and normative claim-making, contains an unacknowledged aesthetic dimension, which I uncover through a critical reading of Axel …

For over 25 years, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has claimed to observe an annual modulation signal, suggesting the existence of dark matter interactions. However, no experiment using different target materials has observed a dark matter signal consistent with their result. To address this puzzle, the COSINE-100 collaboration conducted a model-independent test using sodium iodide crystal detectors, the same target material as DAMA/LIBRA. Analyzing data collected over 6.4 years by the effective mass of 61.3 kilograms, with improved energy calibration and time-dependent background modeling, we found no evidence of an annual modulation signal, challenging the DAMA/LIBRA result with a confidence level greater …

Abstract: Over the past few decades, Latin American science fiction has garnered growing academic interest in both Latin America and the United States. This increase in attention is driven not only by the proliferation of new publications in the region but also by the persistent archival, collecting, and cataloging efforts of scholars and collectors who work to uncover, preserve, and define the genre’s historical and cultural significance. Accessing these texts, which often circulate outside canonical literary and institutional frameworks, presents significant challenges. Specialized collections dedicated to Latin American science fiction reflect a response to these obstacles and attempt to bridge …
