International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: A growing number of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors experience a range of distressing physical, mental, or cognitive problems post discharge, known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS)1. Increasing evidence suggests that PICS spans multiple domains2, 3; however, prior reviews have noted a reliance on measures of individual symptoms and objective impairments4-6. There is growing recognition of the need for measurement tools that comprehensively assess subjective PICS symptoms across multiple domains7.

Purpose: We conducted a scoping review of studies reporting two or more self-reported subjective symptoms of PICS. In the current analysis, …

Autonomous Versus Collaborative Online Professional Development: Discovering The Differences In Teacher Learning And Perceptions, Michelle Thomas, Heather Tellier, Jennifer Urbach, Corey Pierce Ph.D., Holly Baker-Hill Sep 2025

Autonomous Versus Collaborative Online Professional Development: Discovering The Differences In Teacher Learning And Perceptions, Michelle Thomas, Heather Tellier, Jennifer Urbach, Corey Pierce Ph.D., Holly Baker-Hill

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Online, asynchronous professional development (PD) offers flexibility for learners, yet what is the most effective way to provide online PD? While current research suggests online platforms can be effective for learning, there is a lack of studies examining differences between fully autonomous, asynchronous modules and those that are asynchronous but still collaborative. This mixed-method study examined the learning differences and perceptions between two cohorts of special education teachers as they went through an eight-unit online course on dyslexia. One cohort received an autonomous platform without interaction among the students or instructor. The other cohort received the same content, but online …

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl Sep 2025

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl

Economic and Business Review

We explore the challenges facing the current academic training of economists in small European countries such as Sweden. The monolithic focus on publishing in the top-five journals, which prioritizes methodological rigor over problem-driven research, is often a threat to social relevance and policy applicability. This limits pluralism, excludes many talented economists, and fails to prepare graduates for nonacademic positions. We propose a two-track model for PhD training and academic evaluation, emphasizing both traditional research and applied economic policy, tailored to the diverse needs of academia, public administration, and business. We also argue for broader evaluation criteria, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and …

“The Third Man” is the latest in a series of pieces, spanning fifteen years of iteration, for solo fretless guitar and “automatic improvisation” software. Prior works in the series have been performed throughout the United States, many of them at the New York City Electroacoustic Improvisation Summit between 2016 and 2024. The author serves as the principal performer/composer and programmer of this and prior works, which has enabled the progressive refinement of generative techniques to support very personal compositional aesthetics and performance practices. Setting aside the stylistic idiosyncrasies they serve, details of the relatively simple generative techniques used in “The …

Paleoseismic Evidence Of Directivity For The 1976 Mw 7.5 Motagua Earthquake, Guatemala, Jonathan Obrist-Farner, Jeremy Maurer, Derek Gibson, Trenton Mcenaney, Andreas Eckert, William F. Kenney, Jeffrey Beeson, Nigel Wattrus, Quin Stangeland, Fatima Reyes

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

On 4 February 1976, a Mw 7.5 earthquake along the Motagua fault, Guatemala, ruptured ∼230 km of the North American and Caribbean plate boundary. Today, the plate boundary remains poorly monitored, and the 1976 earthquake is still not fully understood. Here, we present seismic reflection profiles and radiometrically dated sediment core data from six lakes around the Motagua fault, together with reports of destruction and a quasi-dynamic rupture model, which show that the 1976 earthquake experienced strong directivity that impacted the distribution of shaking. The earthquake left behind a detailed record of event deposits (EDs) in five of the six …

Policy Recommendations To Reduce Old Age Food Insecurity In The United States, Colleen M. Heflin, Madonna Harrington Meyer Sep 2025

Policy Recommendations To Reduce Old Age Food Insecurity In The United States, Colleen M. Heflin, Madonna Harrington Meyer

Center for Policy Research

In 2023, 7.4 million adults ages 60 and over in the United States were food insecure. As the number of older people at risk of food insecurity in the U.S. continues to rise, effective policy responses are critical. The current policy responses to old age food insecurity are complex, costly, and not nearly effective enough.

Based on the book, Food for Thought: Understanding Older Adults Food Insecurity, this brief summarizes five policy recommendations to improve food insecurity among U.S. older adults. The authors recommend measuring food security in multidimensional ways, treating food insecurity as a health issue, adopting SNAP …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Unstably Stratified Turbulent Flow Over Riblets, Max Eltzroth Sep 2025

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Unstably Stratified Turbulent Flow Over Riblets, Max Eltzroth

Dissertations and Theses

Riblets are micro-groove elements which can reduce the skin friction drag coefficient for wall-, channel-, and pipe-flows. It is unclear how robust these drag-reduction capabilities are when external forces are acting on the fluid and affecting turbulent structures. Here, buoyancy forces are introduced by varying the wall Richardson number (Riτ = 0, 18, 60) to create unstable stratification. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed on streamwise-aligned riblets of triangular and bladed geometries in a horizontal half-channel pressure-driven turbulent flow (Reτ = 395). The Fukagata-Iwamoto-Kasagi (FIK) identity is used to decompose how changes in stresses contribute to changes …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Children affected by armed conflict suffer devastating physical, emotional, and social harm. War uproots families, forcing many to flee as refugees or internally displaced persons, while others remain trapped in dangerous environments. In these crises, children face disproportionate risks-violence, exploitation, disrupted education, and collapsed healthcare systems. Their unique vulnerabilities require urgent, targeted action to protect their health, rights, and development. Beyond immediate care, the humanitarian principle of témoignage-bearing witness-is essential. Rooted in humanitarian ethics, témoignage means speaking out about injustice, amplifying the voices of those affected, and driving systemic change. It challenges traditional notions of neutrality and calls on humanitarian …

National Alliance Of Sickle Cell Centers Consensus Standards For Transition To Adult Care In Sickle Cell Disease, Stephanie Howe Guarino, Akshat Jain, Mohan Madisetti, Kenneth Rivlin, Payal C. Desai, Julie Kanter, Sophie Lanzkron, Deepa Manwani

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Sickle cell disease (SCD), an autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy, affects ∼100 000 people in the United States.1 The process of transitioning from pediatric to adult SCD health care systems can be disjointed and poorly coordinated, contributing to the high morbidity and mortality seen in this population. There is no universally accepted definition of a successful SCD care transition, nor are there existing standards and recommendations for SCD clinicians. National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers (NASCC) uses a described modified Delphi process to reach consensus among its members, through which we defined standards and recommendations for transitioning care from pediatric to adult …

Y You Go Scale (Yygs): A Tool For Measuring Religious Commitment, Camron Angell, David Heath, Noah Perry, Taylor Hales

Student Works

Psychology historically has underplayed the role of religion and has not considered its importance in treatment and research. As such, the field is in need of measures of religious commitment and a greater understanding of the religious experience. There have been general measures of religious commitment such as the Religious Commitment Scale (RCS) and the Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI-10) (Dyer et al., 2023; Fox & Bouffard, 2015; Worthington, E., 2003). The issue with general scales is that religious commitment looks different for each religion. In this context, the present study sought to develop a scale of religious commitment for students …

Bypassing Bamd Essentiality By Mutations In A Non-Essential Substrate, Santosh Kumar, Anna Konovalova Sep 2025

Bypassing Bamd Essentiality By Mutations In A Non-Essential Substrate, Santosh Kumar, Anna Konovalova

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The β-barrel assembly machinery (Bam) is essential for assembling all transmembrane β-barrel outer membrane proteins in gram-negative bacteria. The Bam complex consists of the central β-barrel protein BamA and accessory Bam lipoproteins, including the widely conserved and essential BamD. BamD is assumed to be an essential regulator of OMP assembly, as its absence causes a global defect in OMP biogenesis. Here, we challenge this view by demonstrating that BamD essentiality is both conditional and substrate specific. In Escherichia coli, its function can be bypassed by preventing BamA jamming by a single, non-essential substrate RcsF. Our findings suggest that BamD …

The type IX secretion system (T9SS) is a protein secretion machinery unique to the Bacteroidetes-Chlorobi-Fibrobacteres superphylum, which plays crucial roles in bacterial pathogenesis and gliding motility. It is composed of >15 proteins, including the proton-motive force-dependent PorLM motor, the PorKN ring anchored to the outer membrane, and the Sov translocon. Here, we present the cryo-electron microscopy (EM) structure of the PorKN ring complex from Porphyromonas gingivalis at 3.2 Å resolution. Our structural analysis reveals that PorK contains a repurposed formylglycine-generating enzyme-like fold, which serves as a structural hub for complex assembly rather than enzymatic activity. The complex exhibits a 33-fold …

Retinoid-X-Receptor As A Mediator Of Poststroke Recovery By Reversing Age-Associated Phenotypes Of Microglia/Hematogenous Macrophages, Shun-Ming Ting, Xiurong Zhao, Guanghua Sun, Mercedes Ricote, Jaroslaw Aronowski Sep 2025

Retinoid-X-Receptor As A Mediator Of Poststroke Recovery By Reversing Age-Associated Phenotypes Of Microglia/Hematogenous Macrophages, Shun-Ming Ting, Xiurong Zhao, Guanghua Sun, Mercedes Ricote, Jaroslaw Aronowski

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

After stroke, microglia and hematogenous macrophages, together referred to as MΦ, clear dead cells and cellular debris in the infarcted brain through phagocytosis as an essential part of the recovery process. However, the phagocytic capability of MΦ declines with age. Furthermore, aged MΦ become overactivated in response to stroke, enhancing secondary brain injury. In this study, we demonstrated that by reversing the age-related dysfunctions in MΦ through activating the retinoid X receptor (RXR), the recovery after stroke in the aged brain could be improved. Using RNA-sequencing, we compared the transcriptomes between MΦ isolated from the brains of young and aged …

Infectious Prions In Brains And Muscles Of Domestic Pigs Experimentally Challenged With The Bse, Scrapie, And Cwd Agents, Francisca Bravo-Risi, Fraser Brydon, Angela Chong, Kane Spicker, Justin J Greenlee, Glenn Telling, Claudio Soto, Sandra Pritzkow, Marcelo A Barria, Rodrigo Morales Sep 2025

Infectious Prions In Brains And Muscles Of Domestic Pigs Experimentally Challenged With The Bse, Scrapie, And Cwd Agents, Francisca Bravo-Risi, Fraser Brydon, Angela Chong, Kane Spicker, Justin J Greenlee, Glenn Telling, Claudio Soto, Sandra Pritzkow, Marcelo A Barria, Rodrigo Morales

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Experimental studies suggest that animal species not previously described as naturally infected by prions are susceptible to prion diseases affecting sheep, cattle, and deer. These interspecies transmissions may generate prions with unknown host ranges. Pigs are susceptible to prions from different origins, including deer chronic wasting disease (CWD), sheep scrapie, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Here, we studied prions in brains and muscles from pigs previously infected with these different prion sources. Specifically, we measured the total prion protein (PrP) and PK-resistant PrP by western blot. Seeding activity in these tissues was evaluated using the protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) …
