A Sociocognitive Approach To Second Language Acquisition: Integrating Neurodiversity And Advocacy In Language Learning, Brian Kapustka Nov 2025

A Sociocognitive Approach To Second Language Acquisition: Integrating Neurodiversity And Advocacy In Language Learning, Brian Kapustka

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This project, A Sociocognitive Approach to Second Language Acquisition: Integrating Neurodiversity and Advocacy in Language Learning, serves as a pedagogical framework and instructional resource designed for world language educators. Grounded in Atkinson’s (2011) Sociocognitive SLA model, the project synthesizes cognitive, sociocultural, ecological, and embodied perspectives to illuminate how language learning emerges through dynamic interactions among mind, body, and environment. It further integrates contemporary neurodiversity research—addressing ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and other cognitive profiles—to propose strength-based, multimodal strategies that support diverse learners. Drawing on the work of Swain, Norton, van Lier, and others, the project emphasizes identity, emotion, and advocacy as …

Inventory Assortment Model For Retailers With Multi-Level Substitution Of Products, Gian Paolo G. Guiao, Gabriel John L. De Leon, John Kenneth P. Punongbayan, Kathleen L. Baldoz, Ven-Rem Bill A. Pasion, Angelo C. Ani Nov 2025

Inventory Assortment Model For Retailers With Multi-Level Substitution Of Products, Gian Paolo G. Guiao, Gabriel John L. De Leon, John Kenneth P. Punongbayan, Kathleen L. Baldoz, Ven-Rem Bill A. Pasion, Angelo C. Ani

Journal Article

Ensuring a sufficient inventory level at the retail stage of the supply chain is essential to meet customer demand. However, determining the ideal quantity of products to be ordered by a retailer is challenging when there is a substitution of products. This study addresses the occurrence of customers substituting products in the store in case of product unavailability by developing a two- phase stochastic optimization model. The first phase created a discretized demand profile, one of the novelties of this study, that allows customers to substitute up to two attempts. The second phase developed a mixed-integer program (MIP) model that …

Energy-Harvesting Concurrent Lora Mesh With Timing Offsets For Underground Mine Emergency Communications, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria Nov 2025

Energy-Harvesting Concurrent Lora Mesh With Timing Offsets For Underground Mine Emergency Communications, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Underground mine emergencies destroy communication infrastructure when situational awareness is most critical. Current systems rely on centralized network infrastructure, which fails during emergencies when miners are trapped and require rescue coordination. This paper proposes an energy-harvesting LoRa mesh network that addresses self-powered operation, interference management, and adaptive physical layer optimization under severe underground propagation conditions. A dual-antenna architecture separates RF energy harvesting (860 MHz) from LoRa communication (915 MHz), enabling continuous operation with supercapacitor storage. The core contribution is a decentralized scheduler that derives optimal timing offsets by modeling concurrent transmissions as a Poisson collision process, exploiting LoRa's capture effect …

Can Limited Partners Mitigate Negative Externalities In Private Equity?, Teodor Duevski, Chhavi Rastogi, Tianhao Yao Nov 2025

Can Limited Partners Mitigate Negative Externalities In Private Equity?, Teodor Duevski, Chhavi Rastogi, Tianhao Yao

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

We show how Limited Partners' (LPs) environmental and social (E&S) concerns transmit to private equity (PE) rms through capital supply. E&S incidents in portfolio companies reduce PE fundraising, as E&S-concerned relationship LPs refrain from recommitting and are not easily substituted. Using a legal reform that expands E&S-concerned public pension capital to PE, we causally show that PE rms internalise LPs' E&S concerns, reducing dirty sector portfolio allocation and increasing ESG hiring. Additionally, PE rms with E&S- concerned relationship LPs engage with portfolio companies to manage E&S risks. Limited capital substitutability enables LPs to delegate E&S preferences, shaping PE allocation and …

“In The World”: The Journal Of International Women’S Studies At 25, Andrew Holman

Bridgewater Review

Academic journals are at the heart of our system of communicating scholarly ideas and research results, and have been since at least the 1640s, but at no time has the genre undergone such challenge and change as in the past 25 years. In that span, the perennial quest among editors to stay relevant has been joined by successive waves of novel transition: a shift from print to online publishing, the push for an open-access model of consumption, the growth of alternative, non-journal communication networks (from listservs to weblogs, podcasts, and more), and now, the uncertainty of generative AI. To face …

Retrofitting Through The Facade: An Integrated Architectural Retrofit Assesment, Marie Danielle Danso Nov 2025

Retrofitting Through The Facade: An Integrated Architectural Retrofit Assesment, Marie Danielle Danso

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

Dynamic façades can be used as architectural tools to reduce heat gain in a building. This kinetic design reforms energy efficiency and can improve user comfort. Dynamic façades change their form and appearance in response to the environment. They can reduce stress on heating and cooling systems by mitigating the amount of solar radiation a building receives. Additionally, this architectural approach can control internal heating and cooling loads by managing the intake of sunlight. This study investigates a dynamic façade as an architectural tool to substantially reduce the heat gain of the Engineering Research Building on the campus of The …

Independent And Interdependent Self-Construal: An Examination Of Migration History And Gender In Chinese- And European-Canadians, Nicolle F. Cai, Silvain S. Dang, Paul L. Hewitt Nov 2025

Independent And Interdependent Self-Construal: An Examination Of Migration History And Gender In Chinese- And European-Canadians, Nicolle F. Cai, Silvain S. Dang, Paul L. Hewitt

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Despite previous work on independent and interdependent self-construal, there is more limited research in self-construal with relation to migration history. Additionally, gender influences on self-construal and the correlation between the two self-construal dimensions remain unclear, given the mixed findings in existing literature. Current study aims to replicate and extend self-construal findings from Chinese- and Euro-Canadians in relation to migration history and gender. We hypothesized that men and individuals with earlier migration history to Canada will report higher independent and lower interdependent self-construal. Canadian university students (N = 524) completed the Self-Construal Scale (Singelis, 1994) and reported their gender, ethnicity, and …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

BACKGROUND: Of patients who receive standard concomitant chemoradiation (CRT; intensity-modulated radiation therapy [IMRT] plus cisplatin) for locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC), approximately two-thirds will develop severe oral mucositis (SOM), limiting their ability to eat solids (WHO grade 3) or drink liquids (WHO grade 4). In a randomized, double-blind phase 2b trial, avasopasem manganese substantially reduced duration and incidence of SOM versus placebo. This phase 3 trial further assessed avasopasem's reduction of SOM due to CRT.

METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03689712), patients receiving 60-72 Gy IMRT (>50 Gy to ≥2 oral mucosal sites) plus cisplatin …

The Resource Characteristics Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes) And The Impact Of Platform Participation On Business Performance, Xue Tan Nov 2025

The Resource Characteristics Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes) And The Impact Of Platform Participation On Business Performance, Xue Tan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Against the backdrop of deeply integrated digital and platform economies, the resource characteristics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and platform participation’s impact on business performance have emerged as key interdisciplinary research focuses between strategic management and digital economy studies. Building upon the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), the study establishes a theoretical framework of “resource characteristics-platform participation-business performance.” It systematically examines the relationships and moderating mechanisms among SMEs’ resource endowment, platform embedding strategies, and performance outcomes.

The study adopts a mixed-method design, combining quantitative analysis with qualitative case studies. Using valid samples of 333 Chinese SMEs, …

New Judicial Federalism And The Establishment Clause: Classroom Ten Commandments As A Case Study In State Constitutional Protection, Caroline Mala Corbin Nov 2025

New Judicial Federalism And The Establishment Clause: Classroom Ten Commandments As A Case Study In State Constitutional Protection, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

Louisiana recently enacted a law requiring a Ten Commandments display in every public school classroom from kindergarten to college. Forty-five years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a nearly identical attempt to introduce Christianity into the public schools violated the Establishment Clause—the clause in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment that requires some degree of separation between church and state.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has since reduced the Establishment Clause to a shadow of its former self. It replaced doctrinal tests that protected religious minorities with a history and tradition test that is easily manipulated and that presumes the …
