With a mass of approximately ∼1012 solar masses, the Galactic Halo is the closest known large dark matter halo and a prime candidate for indirect dark matter detection. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) is a high energy (300 GeV to 100 TeV) gamma ray detector located in central Mexico. HAWC operates via the water Cherenkov technique and has both a wide field of view of ∼2 sr and a >95% duty cycle, making it ideal for analysis of highly extended sources. We made use of these properties of HAWC, and a new background-estimation technique optimized for extended sources …

We present the observation of an anomalous increment of the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux observed by the HAWC array during October 2016. We propose that this anisotropy of the GCR flux was caused by a magnetic flux rope (MFR) i. e., by the helicoidal magnetic field of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection observed at 1 AU at the same time. We computed the trajectory of protons with energy in the range of 10 to 60 GeV, traveling inside the helicoidal magnetic field observed in situ. The direction of these particles changes towards the axis of the MFR resulting in …

Since starting full operations, the HAWC γ-ray observatory has detected and monitored TeV emission of the nearby BL Lac objects Markarian 421 and Markarian 501. The HAWC Collaboration presented a follow-survey of Active Galactic Nuclei selected from the 3FHL Fermi Catalog covering 60% of the sky and up to redshift z ≤ 0.3. Using over 4.5 years of HAWC data we found low-significance evidence for persistent TeV emission from other sources previously reported as flaring very-high energy sources.

The one square kilometer array (KM2A), a sub-array of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) experiment, consists of 5195 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs), has been built over three-quarters scale. Its main scientific goal is to search gamma-ray sources at energies above 100 TeV. Offline calibration method has been used to calibrate thousands of EDs to guarantee the key performances of the array such as angular resolution and pointing accuracy within 0.1° during long-term operation. The experimental results of the 3/4 array show that this method can be used to determine the detector time offset …

The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) between the Sun and the Earth induces the displacement of the cosmic-ray Sun shadow from the optical position. Previously, the average IMF has been measured by the ARGO-YBJ and the Tibet-ASy experiments through several years of data. With the improvement of the sensitivity, the first pool of WCDA in LHAASO, which has been operated since April 2019, and has observed the Sun shadow with significance exceeds 70 standard deviations. Using the data collected by WCDA from July 26 to August 22, 2019, we measured the displacements of Sun shadow at the energy of 6.4TeV every …

The Crab Nebula is a steady radiation source, which has been used as a reference source in very high energy γ-ray astronomy for calibration and verification of detectors, however the γ-ray flares around GeV from the Crab Nebula have been observed many times by AGILE and Fermi-LAT. These observations challenge the standard models for particle acceleration in pulsar wind nebula. One square kilometer detector array (KM2A) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is designed to detect γ-ray sources with high sensitivity at 100 TeV. In this work, half of the KM2A detector performance, the observations of the …

The Wide Field-of-view Cerenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) is an important component of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), which aims to measure the individual energy spectra of cosmic rays from ~30 TeV to a couple of EeV. The longitudinal development is one of the main tools to distinguish nuclei from each other. WFCTA is composed of 18 imaging air Cerenkov telescopes, each telescope has 32 x 32 pixels, covers a field of view 16o x 16o (each pixel corresponding to 0.5o x 0.5o). The first telescope started in operation since February 2019, up to …

The SWGO Collaboration is in the process of designing and prototyping a wide field of view, high duty cycle complements to CTA and the existing ground-based particle detectors of the Northern Hemisphere (HAWC and LHAASO). In this contribution, we will compare the various technological options for designing the detector and present an overarching system design accommodating them. We will introduce a feasible reference configuration that is used for the first large-scale simulations and cost estimates and show ongoing prototyping work focused on reaching a maintenance-free and cost-effective detector.
The Protective Potential Of Family Relationship Strength As It Relates To Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors In Ace-Exposed Adolescents And Emerging Adults, Collin Wright
Student Works
Introduction: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are known to cause higher incidences of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors (STBs) in young people. Family Relationship Strength (FRS) is a known protective factor against STBs. However, there is little research on the protective nature of FRS once ACEs have been experienced by a young person. The aim of our analysis is to examine whether the strong protective nature of FRS holds true even in ACE-exposed youth. Methods: A sample of 139 patients at the Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic (aged 12-25) was obtained from the BYU Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network. Linear …

Conflict And Territory: A Legal And Metalegal Approach. The Case Of Spain, Juan Cayón Peña

Abstract The territory has traditionally been one of the main sources of conflict. Since the borders of the states were determined after the Second World War, some of the main problems for security and defense have been determined by the separatist claims of those territories integrated into states from which they aspire to separate. There are cases in which the foreign influence is clear, but others in which the nationalist sentiment explains the desire for disintegration, as is the case in Spain. The territorial configuration of the Spanish State in the 1978 Constitution was an original milestone in the history …

Empowering The Defense To Confront The Government's Powers: Virginia Criminal Justice Legal Reform, Bryan Kennedy, Catherine F. Zagurskie
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
During the 2021 Session and 2021 Special Session, Virginia took steps to
restore the balance between individuals ensnared in the criminal legal system
and the government. These new laws allow people who are involved in
the criminal legal system to emphasize their humanity and to hold the government
to its various burdens at all stages of the case, including pre-trial,
trials, sentencing, and appeal. This article discusses four of the most important
changes to Virginia law that ensure a more level playing field between
the government and the accused.
First, eliminating the presumption against bail challenges the government’s
power of …

Even though there were many tool developments of fusion gene prediction from NGS data, too many false positives are still an issue. Wise use of the genomic features around the fusion gene breakpoints will be helpful to identify reliable fusion genes efficiently. For this aim, we developed FusionAI, a deep learning pipeline predicting human fusion gene breakpoints from DNA sequence. FusionAI is freely available via https://compbio.uth.edu/FusionGDB2/FusionAI. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Kim et al. (2021b).

The Hero In You: The Impact Of Psychological Capital Training And Perceived Leadership On Follower Psychological Capital Development And Burnout, Alifiya Khericha
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
Psychological capital has become a popular construct in the workplace, relating to important organizational outcomes such as job performance and organizational commitment. It is a higher-order construct comprised of hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism. A key characteristic of PsyCap is “state-like” and open to development. Studies show that interventions and leadership play a key role in individuals' ability to develop their PsyCap. In the study, I examined whether an online, self-study training could help increase individual PsyCap and decrease burnout. Results indicated that the 40 minute training led to increases in psychological capital (N = 128; t[127] = …

Variability In Variables: An Analysis Of Variable Use In A Middle School Mathematics Textbook, Annalisa G. Lavin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Variables are an important part of mathematics as they allow mathematicians to generalize and more easily express mathematical ideas, however research has shown that students struggle with understanding variables. One way to study variable use is to classify variables into different types based on how they are used. This study uses variable types to investigate variable usage in a middle school mathematics textbook. This study identified 9 variable types and 3 algebraic processes that variable types are tied to. This analysis also found evidence of a growing complexity in variable use, starting with sophisticated variable use in grade 6 and …

The Effect Of Mobile Voting Units On Voter Turnout: An Ada County, Idaho Case Study, Tayzlie T. Haack, Tayzlie Tripple Haack
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Counties across the United States are struggling to find solutions that decrease the costs of voting while increasing voter turnout across varying demographics. In particular, because of transportation and information costs, voting is costly for low-income citizens. Ada County, Idaho attempted to mitigate these costs through introducing a mobile voting unit. This mobile voting unit is used during early voting periods and targets precincts that do not have a permanent voting location. Using voter registration data from 2006 to 2020, I attempt to identify a treatment effect of the mobile voting unit on voter turnout in general elections. My paper …

Uncontrolled Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake Underlies The Pathogenesis Of Neurodegeneration In Micu1-Deficient Mice And Patients, Raghavendra Singh, Adam Bartok, Melanie Paillard, Ashley L. Tyburski, Melanie B Elliott, György Hajnóczky
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Dysregulation of mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake is mediated via the calcium uniporter complex that is primarily regulated by MICU1, a Ca2+-sensing gatekeeper. Recently, human patients with MICU1 loss-of-function mutations were diagnosed with neuromuscular and cognitive impairments. While studies in patient-derived cells revealed altered mitochondrial calcium signaling, the neuronal pathogenesis was difficult to study. To fill this void, we created a neuron-specific MICU1-KO mouse model. These animals show progressive, abnormal motor and cognitive phenotypes likely caused by the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord and the cortex. We found increased susceptibility …

Western Prairie Fringed Orchid Management, Ecology, And Decline At Mormon Island, Andrew J. Caven
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The western prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera praeclara Sheviak & M. L. Bowles; WPFO) was first detected in a vegetative state on Mormon Island in 1978 and identification was confirmed following a mass flowering event in 1982. From a high count of ~60 plants the WPFO slowly declined and has not been observed since 2000 despite flowering season surveys conducted in 15 of the last 20 years. We explore the natural history of the WPFO in the contexts of Mormon Island to establish potential causes for its apparent disappearance and evaluate the possibility it persists in some capacity. Our investigation …
Implementing A High-Performance Quantum Computing Emulator, Reece Robertson
Implementing A High-Performance Quantum Computing Emulator, Reece Robertson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
We implement a quantum computing emulator after the manner described by Häner et al. with the goal of temporal and spatial savings. The emulator is compared to the Intel Quantum Simulator to verify speedup and spatial savings over the simulator method. We also implement Shor's algorithm in the emulator and use it to solve a nontrivial factoring problem. This demonstrates that the emulator makes quantum computing more accessible on at least two accounts: it allows users to solve nontrivial problems quickly and it provides those looking to enter quantum computing with an accessible place to start. Finally, we outline future …

The Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is designed to measure the Cherenkov and fluorescent light created in the extensive air showers by cosmic rays (CRs) from ∼30 TeV to several EeV. In order to achieve an end-to-end calibration method for WFCTA, three Laser lidar facilities have been installed at LHAASO. They feature two N2 and one YAG Lasers which direct calibrated and pulsed beams into sky. Light scattered from Laser beams produces tracks recorded by the telescope detectors. The Laser calibration systems are used to investigate properties of the atmosphere and …

Memory Rewriting As A Method Of Inquiry: When Returning Becomes Collective Healing, Ethan Trinh, Giang Nguyen Hoang Le Mr., Ha Dong, Trang Tran, Vuong Tran
The Qualitative Report
Writing is collective healing to build a community. We, five Vietnamese bodies, enquire, how can individual memories be collective healing to rewrite a better future of education? We borrow Nhat Hanh’s philosophy to touch on our suffering to heal and Barad’s returning as a multiplicity of processes for reconnecting with the pastpresentfuture. We use the recollection of individual memories to share critical incidents of past experiences to build a collective community for healing purposes. We have demonstrated our deep commitment to creating a resilient system in retelling stories and rewriting for hope for educational change through this process.
Monitoring Of Structural Quality Under Construction Using 3d Point Cloud Data, Xinxing Yuan
Monitoring Of Structural Quality Under Construction Using 3d Point Cloud Data, Xinxing Yuan
Civil Engineering ETDs
Inspection of infrastructure under construction has become an active research topic in the past few decades. Due to rising costs and safety concerns of current inspection methods, automated inspection methods are proposed. In this context, this dissertation has developed a framework that uses 3D point cloud data from the bridge under construction and evaluates the design specifications and the strength capacity of the structure while is being built. This study presents a slicing algorithm for automatically evaluating rebar placement using 3D point cloud data. The outcomes of this research provide structural engineering with (i) automatic inspection of reinforcement during construction; …
Assessing Learning Processes Rather Than Outcomes: Using Critical Incidents To Explore Student Learning Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
Assessing Learning Processes Rather Than Outcomes: Using Critical Incidents To Explore Student Learning Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
There is an increasing emphasis on assessing student learning outcomes from study abroad experiences, but this assessment often focuses on a limited range of outcomes and assessment methods. We argue for shifting to assessing student learning processes in study abroad and present the critical incident technique as one approach to achieve this goal. We demonstrate this approach in interviews with 79 students across a range of global engineering programs, through which we identified 173 incidents which were analyzed to identify common themes. This analysis revealed that students described a wide range of experiences and outcomes from their time abroad. Students’ …

To assess the levels of infection across communities during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, researchers have measured severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA in feces dissolved in sewer water. This activity is colloquially known as sewer monitoring and is referred to as wastewater-based epidemiology in academic settings. Although global ethical principles have been described, sewer monitoring is unregulated for health privacy protection when used for public health surveillance in the United States. This study used Qualtrics XM, a national research panel provider, to recruit participants to answer an online survey. Respondents (N = 3,083) answered questions about their knowledge, …
The All-American Christ, Mark St George
The All-American Christ, Mark St George
Research Papers
My research identifies the mythogenesis of the myth-hero, the All-American Christ. This figure is realized through motion pictures by fusing together the ideological strains of Judeo-Christian vicarious redemption, Biblical American Exceptionalism, and conservative, Muscular Christianity. Using the methodologies of historical criticism and American studies, I argue that the construction of this conservative myth represents a militant manifestation of theocratic media, and is evangelized in the 1971 Christ film, The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston.

Critical-Thinking Experiences Of Chinese And U.S. College Students: A Comparative Analysis Using Phenomenology, Lu (Wendy) Yan
Critical-Thinking Experiences Of Chinese And U.S. College Students: A Comparative Analysis Using Phenomenology, Lu (Wendy) Yan
The Qualitative Report
In this study, I investigated the critical-thinking experiences of seven Chinese international and five U.S. students attending a large public university in the United States. I conducted a comparative analysis of these groups’ different experiences with critical thinking in this context, while closely following the twin methods of epoché and reduction in phenomenology to remain attuned to any personal biases. My results indicated that Chinese and U.S. students experienced critical thinking differently on the basis of the four universal existentials noted by van Manen (2016): lived experiences of relation (self–other), materiality (things), time, and space/place. Specifically, the Chinese students tended …

The Critical Factors Influencing The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Nurses Caring For Patients With Substance Use Disorders, Suzan Blacher
The Critical Factors Influencing The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Nurses Caring For Patients With Substance Use Disorders, Suzan Blacher
Dissertations
Nursing is known to be an ethical and caring practice discipline, yet there is some evidence that nurses may have negative attitudes and behaviors towards persons with substance use disorders. Few nurses realize these undesirable attitudes and behaviors negatively impact the very patients they are caring for (Can & Tanriverdi, 2015). These attitudes and behaviors are also considered unprofessional and may place nurses in violation of the Nursing Code of Ethics (American Nurses Association, 2015).
The purpose of this qualitative constructivist grounded theory study is to develop a middle-range theory explicating the process of nurses caring for Substance Use Disorder …
