The research group consists of 504 physical education teachers, including 240 women and 264 men, who work in high schools and secondary schools in Adana and Mersin provinces. Results: The results showed that the teachers working in high schools were in the digital environment too much. At the same time, teachers stated that they did not feel …
Eotenas And Hobbits: Finn And Hengest, And Tolkien’S Speculation About Origins, Nicholas Birns
Eotenas And Hobbits: Finn And Hengest, And Tolkien’S Speculation About Origins, Nicholas Birns
Journal of Tolkien Research
This essay examines Tolkien’s Finn and Hengest, particularly concentrating on Tolkien’s interpretation of the word eotenas as meaning Jutes rather than ‘monsters’. As opposed to “Beowulf: The Monsters and The Critics,” where Tolkien emphasizes supernatural elements at the expense of history, Tolkien’s lecture on the Finnsburg episode in Beowulf and the Finnsburg fragment seems to present Hengest as an English national hero, despite the bloodiness and vengeance of his reprisals against Hnaef and the Frisian court. The use of the word 'eotenas,' which can be constructed as either 'monsters' or 'Jutes,' is at the nub of the conflict here, …
Deviant Behaviour In Competitive Sport. A Sociological Attempt At Explaining The Phenomenon, Zbigniew Dziubinski
Deviant Behaviour In Competitive Sport. A Sociological Attempt At Explaining The Phenomenon, Zbigniew Dziubinski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
This article seeks to use selected sociological theories to account for the phenomenon of deviance in sport. Two main theoretical approaches are employed herein: the functionalist/structuralist approach and symbolic interactionism. The analysis that follows leads to the conclusion that deviance which occurs in sport is predominantly a consequence of deviance in modern societies. Sport, in turn, is just a convenient area for deviant behaviours to be manifested, which often happens more clearly and conspicuously than in societies.

Rosal De María By Soror Maria Do Céu: A Pedagogical Edition And Literary Analysis, Bailey Willden
Rosal De María By Soror Maria Do Céu: A Pedagogical Edition And Literary Analysis, Bailey Willden
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Soror Maria do Céu’s Rosal de María, second of the five plays published in her work Triunfo do Rosario, is an exemplary work of early modern convent drama because the didactic, allegorical purposes of the play interact with rich symbolism and mastery of the literary conventions of the day. Written to perform as part of the celebrations for the Feast of the Rosary, Rosal de Maria fulfills the same purpose of the Rosary itself, leading worshipers in their contemplation on the life of Christ. She creates a living Rosary on the stage by employing elements like floral imagery, transferred classicism …
Gender-Related Language Trends In Online Written News: Comparative Corpus Analysis Of Prescribed Vs. Actual Usage, Brooke James
Gender-Related Language Trends In Online Written News: Comparative Corpus Analysis Of Prescribed Vs. Actual Usage, Brooke James
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Contrary to traditional thought in linguistics and editing, recent studies using corpus-based evidence suggest that historical English usage patterns influenced prescriptive usage manuals’ guidelines more than the other way around. To investigate the modern relationship between English language prescriptions and usage, this study focuses on the wide-reaching genre of written online news and the topic of gender-fair language. It compares changes regarding gender-specific language in the Associated Press’s stylebooks to actual usage trends as documented in the News on the Web (NOW) corpus. Results from NOW show -man title variants as the dominant form in the early 2010s, consistent AP …

The Effect Of Economic Shocks On Religious Freedom Violations: Evidence From Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, And Sudan, Rachel Miner
The Effect Of Economic Shocks On Religious Freedom Violations: Evidence From Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, And Sudan, Rachel Miner
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, global religious freedom violations are on the rise, especially against religious minorities, as government leaders have used the pandemic as a mechanism to increase oppression (USCIRF 2021). The first week of February 2022, the international community recognized the one-year mark since the Myanmar government launched a coup and genocide campaign against Rohingya Muslims (Paddock 2022). As the Winter Olympics unfolds on the world stage, there is increased attention surrounding the nearly two million Uighur Muslims currently held in concentration camps in China (Abbas 2022). And even with growing headline reports, uncertainty surrounding how …
The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the root cause of the systemic underrepresentation of women in the finance industry by investigating why so few women choose to study finance in college. It looks in depth at why there is a low percentage of women that graduate in finance from Brigham Young University each year by analyzing the survey responses of women in business majors across the Marriott School. The thesis discusses three areas of solutions for greater mentorship, transparency, and exposure that can be implemented through five actionable steps to help shift the dynamic of representation. While I do not aim to make …

Thanks to recent technological development, a new generation of cosmic ray experiments have been developed with more sensitivity to study these particles in the primary energy interval from 10 TeV to 1 PeV, such as HAWC. Due to its design and high altitude, the HAWC gamma-ray and cosmic ray observatory can provide a bridge between the data from direct and indirect cosmic ray detectors. In 2017 the HAWC collaboration published its first result on the total energy spectrum of cosmic rays, which covers the range from 10 to 500 TeV. This work updates the previous result by extending the energy …

The Cygnus Cocoon is the first gamma-ray superbubble powered by a massive stellar association, the OB2 association. It was postulated that the combined effects of the stellar winds of all the massive O-type stars of the OB2 association can accelerate the cosmic rays to PeV energy in the Cocoon. The conclusive proof of acceleration to PeV energy in the Cocoon will identify the stellar association as a PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, known as PeVatron. However, the Cocoon has been previously studied only up to 10 TeV. In this contribution, using 1343 days of High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory data, we …

M87 is a giant radio galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster, known to be a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source. As radio galaxies are considered the misaligned low-redshift counterparts of blazars, they are excellent laboratories for testing AGN emission models. M87 has been detected and monitored by Fermi-LAT and several atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, the HAWC Collaboration presented marginal evidence of 4.5-year TeV gamma-ray emission from this object. The HAWC data has the potential to constrain the average VHE emission of sources of complex behavior, like M87, for which the physical origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission is still …

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is a new generation hybrid cosmic ray observatory which is expected to reveal the mystery of the origin of cosmic rays. The one square kilometer array (KM2A) containing 5195 Electromagnetic particle Detectors (ED) and 1188 Muon Detectors (MD) is a sub-array of the LHAASO. The EDs are designed to measure the density and arriving time of the secondary particles of cosmic rays. KM2A reaches its 3/4 scale by December 2020. 3978 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 917 muon detectors (MDs) are now in stable operation. In this paper, we will introduce the …

The number of muons observed at the ground from air showers is sensitive to the mass composition of cosmic ray and hadronic interaction model. Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory is a hybrid extensive air shower array and the KM2A is a sub-array covering an area of 1 km2, consisting of electromagnetic detectors and muon detectors, can measure the muon content and shower size of the air shower simultaneously with high precision for cosmic rays in the knee region. The muon detector of KM2A is the most powerful muon detector in the current cosmic ray observatory on the …

“I—I Can’T Talk About Things”: The Tragedy Of Post-Wwii Civilian Masculinity In Agatha Christie’S Taken At The Flood, Rebekah Olsen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the ways in which Agatha Christie’s Taken at the Flood serves to illustrate the fragility and ultimate destabilization of masculinity immediately following WWII. Christie illustrates this break by comparing two men, David Hunter and Rowley Cloade who represent types of men in Britain’s postwar landscape. Throughout the text, David Hunter is framed as a dangerous and dreadful young man, serving as a representation of post-war fears about demobbed soldiers attacking young women. Understanding The Role Of Student Narrative In The Reinstatement From Suspension Process, Angela Bowlus
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Retention and persistence are concerns that are not soon going away for institutions of higher education. Students returning from suspension will continue to be a focus for institutions as they aim to graduate all admitted students. Yet, institutions still want more precise mechanisms that help them identify students who will be academically successful upon return from suspension and know what kind of support those students will need to be successful. Decades of research were unable to find objective criteria that administrators can depend on for making reinstatement decisions. Thus, suggesting further research is necessary to review subjective criteria in this …

Frequent and prolonged droughts challenge groundwater sustainability in California but managing aquifer recharge can help to partially offset groundwater overdraft. Here, we use managed aquifer recharge (MAR) to examine potential benefits of adding an artificial recharge facility downstream from California’s Lower American River Basin, in part to prepare for drought. We use a statewide hydroeconomic model, CALVIN, which integrates hydrology, the economics of water scarcity cost and operations, environmental flow requirements, and other operational constraints, and allocates water monthly to minimize total scarcity and operating costs. This study considers a recharge facility with unconstrained and constrained flows. The results show …

The last stage of cell division involves two daughter cells remaining interconnected by a cytokinetic bridge that is cleaved during abscission. Conserved between the zebrafish embryo and human cells, we found that the oldest centrosome moves in a Rab11-dependent manner towards the cytokinetic bridge sometimes followed by the youngest. Rab11-endosomes are organized in a Rab11-GTP dependent manner at the mother centriole during pre-abscission, with Rab11 endosomes at the oldest centrosome being more mobile compared with the youngest. The GTPase activity of Rab11 is necessary for the centrosome protein, Pericentrin, to be enriched at the centrosome. Reduction in Pericentrin expression or …

Testing The Protest Paradigm And Racial Threat: Analyzing Articles Of Blm Protests In 2014 And 2020, Rebecca Angela Ruiz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The study examines the media coverage of Black Lives Matter protest in years 2014 & 2020. I collected a sample of articles (n=120) from 6 national-level media outlets that varied in political leans. Using the Protest Paradigm and Racial Threat theoretical frameworks to analyze the results, findings suggest that the articles do reflect upon the Protest Paradigm through overall negative sentiment and significant references to looting. I also argue that articles may also reflect racial threat due to a lack of transparency of protesters’ racial makeup or diversity attending demonstrations.

Safe At Home: Addressing Virginia's Housing Policy Concerns In A Pandemic, Ghazala Hashmi
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This article examines the crisis of eviction that exists in the Commonwealth
of Virginia and the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted
the particular vulnerability of low-income and minority communities.
Zoning policies, financing practices, limitations on tenants’ rights, and other
legal structures built into the Virginia Code underscore issues of systemic
racism that exacerbate the lack of affordable housing and instability of rental
opportunities. The article provides a highlight of recent legislation passed by
the Virginia General Assembly that seeks to address some of these concerns.
