Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo Nov 2022

Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo

Dissertation Awards

In this dissertation, I study policies to bridge disparities in broadband access and job search, school discipline, and local economic development in low-income neighborhoods. In Chapter 2, I present evidence on the relationship between broadband pricing and labor market outcomes for low-income individuals. Specifically, I estimate the effects of a Comcast service providing discounted broadband to qualifying low-income families. I use a triple differences strategy exploiting geographic variation in Comcast coverage, individual variation in eligibility, and temporal variation pre- and post-launch. Local program availability increased employment rates and earnings of eligible individuals, driven by greater labor force participation and decreased …

Psalms And The City: John Halgrin Of Abbeville And The Paris Context Of A Scholastic Psalms Commentary, Theresa J. Gross-Diaz Nov 2022

Psalms And The City: John Halgrin Of Abbeville And The Paris Context Of A Scholastic Psalms Commentary, Theresa J. Gross-Diaz

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Though they were at the core of monastic prayer and a staple of contemplative practice, the Psalms also lent themselves extraordinarily well to addressing the dangers and temptations of the active life. In this short essay I would like to explore scholastic exegesis of the Psalms as a means of addressing social and moral issues in the context of Paris in the early 1200s. The real-life context of medieval scholastic commentaries on the Psalms is something of which few modern scholars make note, and one might argue that these commentaries are not even "scholastic," as they lack significant "rational organisation" …

A Mixed Methods Study Regarding The Impact Virtual Education Had On Teachers During Covid-19, Brandon Richard Foley Nov 2022

A Mixed Methods Study Regarding The Impact Virtual Education Had On Teachers During Covid-19, Brandon Richard Foley

Dissertations

Virtual learning and COVID-19 drastically changed the landscape of education. School districts were forced to think about education differently, and COVID-19 led schools and communities into unfamiliar territory with daunting trials and tasks (Pressley & Ha, 2021). The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to add to existing research and examine how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted teachers and school districts during their transition to virtual learning. The social cognitive theory and self-efficacy theory were utilized as the conceptional framework of the study. Phase one of the study included a quantitative survey from one Southwest Missouri school district. A focus group …

Semiotic Transfiguration: Becoming More Fully Human, Vern Hyndman

Doctor of Ministry

Jesus invites us into a new life, not simply adherents to a set of standards. Jesus invites us through a power not our own to become most fully human; alive Spiritually, Physically, Intellectually, Relationally, and Emotionally (SPIRE). We become Jesus-InSPIREd holistic human beings, invited to participate in God-powered transfiguration of ourselves and others.

Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh Nov 2022

Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh

Publications and Research

Each of us has a story which we can think of as a set of beliefs, hopefully consistent. We make our decisions in view of our beliefs which may be probabilistic, in the general case, but simple yes or no as in this paper. Our beliefs are our envelope just as the shell of a tortoise is its envelope.

Decision theory - or single agent game theory tells us when to make the best choice in a game of us against nature. But nature has no desire to further or frustrate our efforts. Nature is mysterious but not malign.

The Constructivist Flipped Classroom, William Robertson Nov 2022

The Constructivist Flipped Classroom, William Robertson

Departmental Papers (TE)

In science education, the value of the constructivist methodology has long been integrated with experiential and hands-on learning while offering a framework for teaching and learning. In recent pre- and future postpandemic times, as various online modalities have been leveraged in the teaching of science, there should be a complementary approach taken to content and experiences in the online environment. Specifically, a hybrid approach that integrates in-person experiences and instruction with online learning opportunities and content delivery, when integrated with constructivism, can provide an appropriate framework for the flipped classroom. By leading with face-to-face active learning opportunities to explore conceptual …

Modeling Vegetation Cover At Mount St Helens Using Highly Correlated Vegetation Indices, Sara Livingston Nov 2022

Modeling Vegetation Cover At Mount St Helens Using Highly Correlated Vegetation Indices, Sara Livingston

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 devastated the landscape and obliterated all ground vegetation within a 620 km2 blast zone radius. The destructive forces of the lateral blast, debris avalanche, tephra plume, and lahar flow created a complex mosaic of disturbance zones, that subsequently yielded various rates of landscape recovery. Remote sensing is an efficient method for monitoring landscape-scale changes by recording the distinct spectral reflectance of vegetation. Based on statistically significant correlations between Vegetation Indices and vegetation parameters, an empirical model can be developed for vegetation cover predictions. This capstone analysis found that NDVI holds the strongest …

The Value In Secrecy, Camilla A. Hrdy Nov 2022

The Value In Secrecy, Camilla A. Hrdy

Fordham Law Review

Trade secret law is seen as the most inclusive of intellectual property regimes. So long as information can be kept secret, the wisdom goes, it can be protected under trade secret law, even if patent and copyright protections are unavailable. But keeping it a secret does not magically transform information into a trade secret. The information must also derive economic value from being kept secret from others. This elusive statutory requirement—called “independent economic value”—might at first glance seem redundant, especially in the context of litigation. After all, if information had no value, why would the plaintiff have bothered to keep …

Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson Nov 2022

Rethinking The Crime Of Rioting, Nick Robinson

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

The fear of riots has long loomed large in the public imagination. This fear is at least partly justified. Riots can present unique challenges, both in the harm they can cause and in the government’s ability to control them. However, from the American colonies to the Civil Rights era, there is also a history of members of largely nonviolent social movements being tarred as “rioters.” This use of the label of “rioting” to undermine dissent is not just a political problem but also a legal one, and it has once again reemerged. Although the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 …

Umurangi Generation: The Red Skies Of Neo-Liberalism, Ian Byrne

The Goose

In this video essay I examine the themes of neo-liberal decay and Indigenous resistance present in the photography game Umurangi Generation. Photography games are a video game genre that make taking photos through an in-game camera the mechanical focus. This non-violent engagement prioritizes player expression and exploration, rather than the action and combat focused games that are typical of the medium. Umurangi Generation was released in May 2020 by Australia based developer Nephtali Faulkner and his team ORIGAME DIGITAL. Using a combination of Indigenous knowledge and academic theory ORIGAME DIGITAL aims to create games which challenge conventional video …

Property Versus Antidiscrimination: Examining The Impacts Of Cedar Point Nursery V. Hassid On The Fair Housing Act, Amy Liang

University of Chicago Law Review

The Fair Housing Act is a groundbreaking federal law enacted in 1968 during the civil rights movement. Reflecting a policy judgment that the public’s interest in eliminating housing discrimination outweighs a prejudicial landlord’s property right to exclude, it prohibits landlords from rejecting tenants on a discriminatory basis. However, as the Act’s promises remain in the process of fulfillment, the Supreme Court’s 2021 decision in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid has placed it into unprecedented danger: by holding that a regulation authorizing temporary occupations of private property constituted a per se taking that requires compensation under the Takings Clause, Cedar Point …

Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang Nov 2022

Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Recent years have witnessed tremendous successes of artificial neural networks in many applications, ranging from visual perception to language understanding. However, such achievements have been mostly demonstrated on a large amount of labeled data that is static throughout learning. In contrast, real-world environments are always evolving, where new patterns emerge and the older ones become inactive before reappearing in the future. In this respect, continual learning aims to achieve a higher level of intelligence by learning online on a data stream of several tasks. As it turns out, neural networks are not equipped to learn continually: they lack the ability …

Development Of The Mentalizing Network Structures And Theory Of Mind In Extremely Preterm Youth, Xiaoxue Fu Ph.D., Andy Hung, Aryanne D. De Silva, Tyler Busch, Whitney I. Mattson, Kristen R. Hoskinson, Hudson Gerry, Eric E. Nelson Nov 2022

Development Of The Mentalizing Network Structures And Theory Of Mind In Extremely Preterm Youth, Xiaoxue Fu Ph.D., Andy Hung, Aryanne D. De Silva, Tyler Busch, Whitney I. Mattson, Kristen R. Hoskinson, Hudson Gerry, Eric E. Nelson

Faculty Publications

Adolescents born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) are at elevated risk for deficits in social cognition and peer relationships. Theory of Mind (ToM) is a complex form of social cognition important for regulating social interactions. ToM and the underlying mentalizing network continue to develop across adolescence. The present study recruited 48 adolescents (12–17 years old) who were either born extremely preterm (EPT; <28 weeks of gestation) or full-term (FT) at birth. Cortical thickness, gray matter volume and surface area were measured in four regions of the mentalizing network: the temporoparietal junction, anterior temporal cortex, posterior superior temporal sulcus and frontal pole (mBA10). We also assessed the adolescents’ performance on a ToM task. Findings revealed both group differences and group-by-age interaction effects in the gray matter indices within the temporal lobe regions of the mentalizing network. The EPT group also performed significantly worse than the FT group on the ToM task. The cortical structural measures that discriminated the EPT and FT groups were not related to ToM performance. These results highlight altered developmental changes in brain regions underlying mentalizing functions in EPT adolescents relative to FT controls.

Neotype Designation For Papilio Fulgerator Walch, 1775 (Hesperiidae: Eudaminae), Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Gerardo Lamas, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The discovery that a skipper butterfly Telegonus fulgerator (Walch, 1775), previously placed in the genus Astraptes Hübner, [1819], is a complex of many similar-looking species-level taxa with different COI barcodes, caterpillar foodplants, and body patterns, and subtle differences in adult phenotypes raised a question about which species is the original T. fulgerator. To answer this question, being unable to locate its holotype, we designate the neotype of Papilio fulgerator Walch, 1775, a female specimen from Suriname in the Zoological State Collection, Munich, Germany. This neotype will form the foundation for a comprehensive revision of the T. fulgerator complex based …

Tidally Generated Internal Waves From Dual-Ridge Topography, Ian Derik Sanderson Nov 2022

Tidally Generated Internal Waves From Dual-Ridge Topography, Ian Derik Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

Internal waves are generated in stratified fluids, like the ocean, where density increases with depth. Tides are one of the major generation mechanisms of internal waves. As the tides move water back and forth over underwater topography, internal waves can be generated. Topography slope and amplitude are major factors in the behavior of the generated internal wave field. In order to further understand the effects topographic shape plays, the effect of asymmetry on internal waves is investigated. This research investigates internal waves generated by dual-ridge topographies. Four cases of symmetric topographies, T, M, W, and W2, with three different peak …

Phantasticus: An Exploration Of The Sound World Of 17th Century Italian Instrumental Music, Ian Jones

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

The Baroque period is home to some of the most prolific composers known today: Handel, Vivaldi, Bach all fill the standard repertoire of many instrumentalists today. However, who came before, and why should we care? Prior to these notable composers of the High Baroque, the 17th century marked an era of immense musical discovery. The early 1600s was a time of exploration and excitement within the realms of music making and musical thought. Claudio Monteverdi was a pivotal figure in the development of the early Baroque world, and with that, new styles of music emerged, noted as stil concertato …

The Evolution Of The Bel Canto Technique Through The 20th And 21st Century: Annotated Bibliography, Claudia Diaz

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

The Bel canto technique is the quintessential technique of opera performance. Throughout history, it has adapted itself and survived through pedagogies, composers, influential artists, and scientific specialists from the field. Although the bel canto technique has a wide range of sources and complete history, this will focus more on the evolution occurring through the 20th and 21st centuries. How the bel canto technique has managed to survive is key to understanding its future.

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Convalescent plasma has been one of the most common treatments for COVID-19, but most clinical trial data to date have not supported its efficacy.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is rigorously selected COVID-19 convalescent plasma with neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies an efficacious treatment for adults hospitalized with COVID-19?

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a multicenter, blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial among adults hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection and acute respiratory symptoms for < 14 days. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to receive one unit of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (n = 487) or placebo (n = 473). The primary outcome was clinical status (disease severity) 14 days following study infusion measured with a seven-category ordinal scale ranging from discharged from the hospital with resumption of normal activities (lowest score) to death (highest score). The primary outcome was analyzed with a multivariable ordinal regression model, with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) < 1.0 indicating more favorable outcomes with convalescent plasma than with placebo. In secondary analyses, trial participants were stratified according to the presence of endogenous anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies ("serostatus") at randomization. The trial included 13 secondary efficacy outcomes, including 28-day mortality.

RESULTS: Among 974 randomized patients, 960 were included in the primary analysis. Clinical status on the ordinal outcome scale at 14 days did not differ between the convalescent plasma and placebo …

Productivity To Precarity On Instagram: Digital Feminism In India During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Anhiti Patnaik

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper examines how digital feminism deconstructed neoliberal ideals of technological productivity in India during the Covid-19 pandemic. By creating a productivity scale, I delineate new social disparities and risk factors brought on by the unprecedented shift to a work-from-home digital economy. Through theories of biopower, I argue that technology is not neutral, apolitical, or unequivocally in favour of equal access and human rights. The creation of a new social group termed the 'technoprecariat' during lockdown is discussed using a 'cripqueer' approach to digital feminism. I extend Judith Butler's early work on gender performativity to the neo-liberal ideal of gender …

The Market For Classic French Modern Art Prior To 1940, Robert Jensen Nov 2022

The Market For Classic French Modern Art Prior To 1940, Robert Jensen

Art and Visual Studies Presentations

Using a quantitative methodology based on auction and sales prices, the paper describes the high-end market for paintings between 1895 and 1839 (paintings selling for $10,000 or more), especially in reference to what the author describes as "classic French modern art." The paper compares prices between Old Master art, classic French modern art, and contemporary art during this period, and asks why classic French modern art sold for prices nearly as high as Old Master art did during this period, especially when compared to contemporary painting.

This study analyses the coverage of demonetisation of Kenyan currency in 2019 from a media priming theoretical framework. Four specific objectives guided the study. These were to: determine frequency of newspaper coverage of demonetisation stories, establish placement of demonetisation stories, analyse themes addressed with respect to demonetisation stories, and establish editorial considerations that were made in deciding the stories on demonetisation published by the print media in Kenya. The population was 244 copies printed from 2nd June 2019 to 1st October 2019 out of which 92 copies were included in the analysis with three interviews from business journalists. This study …
