War And Money In Ngram Viewer, Robert H. Mcfadden, William Zywiak, Ronald P. Bobroff, Gao Niu
Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles
The second and fourth authors have been inviting Intro to Applied Analytics and Statistics 1 students to use the Ngram Database to explore historical topics of their choosing. This is the first article derived from this exercise. The first author examined the historical relationship between war and money from 1775 to 2005 in the American English corpus. This is followed by an examination of the 3-gram “cost of war” in the American English and British English corpora. Specific to the analyses presented here several military and economic events are discussed. More specifically, both economies and wars are somewhat unpredictable, with …

The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă
The Effect Of Social Axioms On The Relationship Between Needs And Well-Being, Cătălin Mosoia, Margareta Dincă
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The paper investigates the effect of social axioms on the relationship between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being in two groups of adults residing in two different cultural contexts, Romania and the UK. Participants aged 18 to 60 completed an online survey between 22 May 2019 and 1 March 2021. A sample of 425 Romanian participants (M = 40.34, SD = 11.235) answered a questionnaire written in the Romanian language, and 137 English-speaking participants (M = 28.24, SD = 10.741) responded to the same questionnaire but written in the English language. In this study, we used the Basic …
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Linguistic Competence And Bicultural Identity: Mutually (Re)Enforcing Or Compensatory Mechanisms For Acculturation?, Łukasz Kmiotek
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The article describes a cross-cultural study comparing bicultural identity and bilingualism of first-generation Poles and high school students in the Rhône Alpes Region (France), high school students in Brussels (Belgium) as well as Polish university students of French language and culture in Poland. The study results portray the contrast between Polish students and three other groups acculturating abroad so that French identity appears stronger than Polish among the university students, and Polish identity stronger than French among the migrants. Secondly, acculturative context (home vs host country) is a moderator between Polish-French bilingualism and bicultural identity. Results are discussed in the …

Expatriate Adolescents’ Resilience: Risk And Protective Factors In The Third Culture Context, Jorunn Jo Holmberg, Lilly Augustine, Sahil Datta, Toshie Imada
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Expatriate children and adolescents typically spend several of their formative years moving from country to country, frequently having to adapt to new cultures, making new friends, and fit into new school systems. It has been established in literature that such frequent changes may cause increased and prolonged risk of developing internalizing behavior problems such as depression and anxiety. However, little is still known regarding which protective factors serve as buffer towards the increased risk within the expatriate demographic. This study examined risk and protective factors among a group of expatriates, adolescents, and their parents, originating from 21 countries on five …
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. After the presentation of each noun, participants were given two options: masculine or feminine. …
The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois
The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Sleep arousal, or waking experiences during sleep, in young children was examined in relation to pacifier usage and the caregiver’s use of the swaddling technique. Primary caregivers of young children from 1 to 24 months old, fluent in English, and 18 years or older completed a Qualtrics survey detailing their child’s sleep routines. The survey questions considered the child’s use of self-soothing devices and the caregiver’s use of soothing techniques, namely pacifiers and swaddling. By utilizing the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire-Revised (BISQ-R; Sadeh et al., 2020), we examined the relationship between child sleep arousal and pacifier usage, along with sleep …

Speaking Of The Speech Or Debate Clause: Revising State Legislative Immunity, Shane Coughlin
Speaking Of The Speech Or Debate Clause: Revising State Legislative Immunity, Shane Coughlin
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
An increasing number of America’s most contentious issues will be resolved in state legislatures. Consequently, the ability of litigants to seek judicial review of a legislature’s actions is becoming more important. The scope of state legislative immunity, a federal common-law defense that provides state legislators with absolute immunity against certain lawsuits, will also increase in importance. A recent case involving New Hampshire’s legislature raises two significant questions about the scope of state legislative immunity. The first question entails how the United States Congress can abrogate the immunity, and the second question is whether legislators may claim the immunity when a …
Emergency-Docket Experiments, Edward L. Pickup, Hannah L. Templin
Emergency-Docket Experiments, Edward L. Pickup, Hannah L. Templin
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
This short Essay is the first to analyze the Court’s recent emer-gency-docket experiments and discuss their effectiveness. We conclude that the Court’s interventions have real benefits: giving emergency cases greater procedure improves transparency, boosts public confidence in the Court, and gives guidance to litigants and lower courts.
But experiments are often iterative—it is unusual to hit the right result the first time. So too with the Court’s emergency-docket tinkering. In tweaking its stay factors, the Justices have failed to give suffi-cient guidance to litigants about how those factors will apply in the future. Plus, in transferring Ramirez from the emergency …

Faculty Research 2022
Germ cell tumours (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms that present in different anatomical sites and across a wide spectrum of patient ages from birth through to adulthood. Once these strata are applied, cohort numbers become modest, hindering inferences regarding management and therapeutic advances. Moreover, patients with GCTs are treated by different medical professionals including paediatric oncologists, neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, neurosurgeons, gynaecological oncologists, surgeons, and urologists. Silos of care have thus formed, further hampering knowledge dissemination between specialists. Dedicated biobank specimen collection is therefore critical to foster continuous growth in our understanding of similarities and differences by age, …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

Advancing Social Equity And Congestion Relief: Understanding The Travel Needs Of Underserved Populations That Rely On Transportation Network Companies In The San Francisco Bay Area, Susan Shaheen, Kate Gosselin, Jacquelyn Broader, Adam Cohen
Research Reports
Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) enable travelers to order and pay for rides on-demand using an online application that connects them with drivers using their personal vehicles. While these modes present opportunities to increase individual mobility and access, they also can worsen congestion and increase vehicle emissions. Researchers explored factors impacting the willingness to use pooled TNCs and identified strategies/policies that could be employed to reduce congestion from TNC use. Researchers conducted a literature review, interviews with TNC experts, semi-structured interviews with lower-income, non-White TNC users, and small group discussions with lower- income, non-White TNC users. This research resulted in several …

Representations Of Young People Aged 15-17 About Their Cultural Orientations And The Cultural Orientations Of Their Immediate Social Environment, Olga Alexandrovna Moskvitina
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Psychological research into the influence of culture, intercultural interactions on different aspects of a person's life is still relevant. The presented research is devoted to identifying what values of what type of culture (traditional modern and dynamic according to J. Townsend) are shared by contemporary high school students aged 15-17 in Russia. Their own idea of values and how they represent the values of their immediate environment were studied. The measure of the coincidence of these ideas may indicate the state of cultural self-determination of high school students: they have their own values, different from the immediate environment, or, on …

A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Adherence For Racial/Ethnic Minority Women With Hiv, Living In The United States, Lunthita M. Duthely, Olga Villar-Loubet, Sneha Akurati, Alex P. Sanchez Covarrubias
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
HIV persists as a global public health tragedy, as more than 36 million lives have been lost to HIV/AIDS. A diagnosis of HIV can be treated as a chronic disease, for those who adhere to their medication regimens and other health recommendations. However, for racial/ethnic minorities living in the United States, many of whom face a multitude of barriers, adherence to medications and medical appointments can be a challenge. For racial/ethnic minority women, specifically, gender roles, HIV stigma, racism, inconsistent access to healthcare, financial and food insecurity are just a few of the barriers they experience, which may interfere with …

Interpreting State Statutes In Federal Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Interpreting State Statutes In Federal Court, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article addresses a problem that potentially arises whenever a federal court encounters a state statute. When interpreting the state statute, should the federal court use the state’s methods of statutory interpretation—the state’s canons of construction, its rules about the use of legislative history, and the like—or should the court instead use federal methods of statutory interpretation? The question is interesting as a matter of theory, and it is practically significant because different jurisdictions have somewhat different interpretive approaches. In addressing itself to this problem, the Article makes two contributions. First, it shows, as a normative matter, that federal courts …
"A Sword In The Bed": Bringing An End To The Fusion Of Law And Equity, Brooks M. Chupp
"A Sword In The Bed": Bringing An End To The Fusion Of Law And Equity, Brooks M. Chupp
Notre Dame Law Review
Those who called for the fusion of law and equity have, throughout the years, argued that the existence of a parallel court system for equity would be inefficient and confusing for parties. While there is limited merit to this viewpoint, the United States has been willing to create courts of limited jurisdiction to hear cases of a highly specialized or technical nature in other areas of the law (for example, tax and bankruptcy). This Note argues that the specialized-courts approach is viable as it relates to equity and that it is, in fact, preferable to the current system. This Note …

Remedying The Immortal: The Doctrine Of Accession And Patented Human Cell Lines, Julia E. Fissore-O'Leary
Notre Dame Law Review
Importantly, though this Note employs Henrietta Lacks as the illustrative, paradigmatic case for the theory of accession it proposes, accession can be, and should be, broadly construed to apply to all like-situated patients. Part I of this Note briefly explains the timeless human-body-as-property debate. Next, Part II addresses the concept of accession—its theoretical underpinnings, definitions, and amenability to this and other lawsuits. Part III applies accession to HeLa and develops a methodology for calculating damages in this unique setting. This Note does not pretend to present a perfectly wrought formula. Instead, it offers several possibilities for determining compensation. Finally, …

Participation And Community Healing In The Me2/ Orchestra, Lee Cyphers
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
The Me2/ Orchestra is a Boston-based community orchestra for people living with mental illness and those who support them. Me2/’s mission, according to its website, is “to erase the stigma surrounding mental illness (including addiction) through supportive classical music rehearsals and inspiring performances.” In order to investigate the methods and practices used by Me2/ to fulfill this mission, this annotated bibliography compiles important literature on community music initiatives with social projects. Concepts of “participation” and “performance” are explored, as well as problems posed by research into the effectiveness of arts programs. In addition, the distinction is made between amateur music-making …

Technology, Artistic Collaboration, And Performance Practice In Bella Voce’S 2019 Recording Of Brahms’ A German Requiem, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
How do the recordist, conductor, and performers work together to create a unique recorded statement within the discourse between a 19th century composer and a 21st century listener in Bella Voce’s 2019 recording of Brahms A German Requiem (1871 London Version)?
The complexity of preparing a musical work and creating a recording of its performance encompasses many disciplines and the collaboration of many individuals. The process involves questions of performance practice, recording technique, applications of digital technology, and artistic choices on the part of all involved. The 2019 Bella Voce recording of Brahms’ A German Requiem is an …

The Effective Concertmaster: A Look At The 21st Century Role, Eva Toncheva
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
The role and responsibilities of the orchestral concertmaster have evolved alongside the orchestra over the last several centuries, shifting away from composing music for the ensemble and organizing events, and towards being aware of union standards, etiquette, and musician morale, as well as the important task of writing bowings. What makes an effective concertmaster? In attempting to answer this question, this paper will be examining both the musical and extra-musical duties of the modern day concertmaster, primarily focusing on leadership qualities such as cueing and leading with the bow. The paper will draw on biographical sources of current concertmasters of …
The 31-Tone Tuning System Of Nicola Vicentino And The Toroidal Tonnetz: An Annotated Bibliography, Kevin Mcfarland
The 31-Tone Tuning System Of Nicola Vicentino And The Toroidal Tonnetz: An Annotated Bibliography, Kevin Mcfarland
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Nicola Vicentino’s treatise L’antica musica ridotta alla moderna prattica (1555), from here on L’antica musica, argues that contrapuntal practices based on modes derived from the diatonic tetrachord are insufficient to express the variety of emotions possible in vocal text settings, and that composers should be inspired by the other Ancient Greek genera as described by Boethius, the chromatic and enharmonic tetrachords. To employ these alternative genera, Vicentino devised an ingenious system that extended quarter-comma mean tone temperament to a thirty-one-tone system that can be neatly approximated by a division of the octave into thirty-one equal parts.
Do Chief Financial Officers Need To Be Qualified Accountants? A Study Of Whether And When Accounting Qualification May Not Be Necessary For Cfos., Vincent Boon Seng Lim
Do Chief Financial Officers Need To Be Qualified Accountants? A Study Of Whether And When Accounting Qualification May Not Be Necessary For Cfos., Vincent Boon Seng Lim
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Many empirical research studies suggest that Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) with accounting qualifications improve company performance in various ways such as through better financial reporting accuracy (Aier et al., 2005), internal control (Li et al., 2010), corporate governance (Sun et al., 2015) and tax efficiency (Chen et al., 2020). This suggests that CFOs should be qualified in accounting. However, this study found that this may not always be the case.
By looking at the top listed companies in Singapore, it was found that a significant percentage of CFOs are not accounting qualified, which indicates a significant gap. The study conducted …

Pairwise Comparison Method: Concept Note, Australian Council For Educational Research
Global education monitoring
The paper sets out several approaches, both statistical and non-statistical, by which jurisdictions may choose to link their assessments to the global standards for reporting. One of these, the Pairwise Comparison Method (PCM), was first set out in Lazendic (2019). This concept note provides further details on the PCM and the work that has taken place since 2019 to enable the approach to be operationalised. The PCM relies on the Learning Progression Scales (LPSs) for reading and mathematics, developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). A full description of the development of the scales is provided in the …
Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo
Bridging Economic And Educational Disparities In America, George W. Zuo
Dissertation Awards
In this dissertation, I study policies to bridge disparities in broadband access and job search, school discipline, and local economic development in low-income neighborhoods. In Chapter 2, I present evidence on the relationship between broadband pricing and labor market outcomes for low-income individuals. Specifically, I estimate the effects of a Comcast service providing discounted broadband to qualifying low-income families. I use a triple differences strategy exploiting geographic variation in Comcast coverage, individual variation in eligibility, and temporal variation pre- and post-launch. Local program availability increased employment rates and earnings of eligible individuals, driven by greater labor force participation and decreased …
