From 'Pandemic' To 'Endemic' And Beyond: Key Aspects Of Research On Older Singaporeans In A Year Of Transition, Nadya Haifan, Jane Tan, Rachel Wen Yi Ngu, Mindy Eiko Tadai, Yan Er Tan, Grace Cheong, Micah Tan, Wensi Lim

ROSA Research Briefs

The past year has been one marked by transition – as a country we have moved from treating COVID-19 as a pandemic to living with it as an endemic disease. Research conducted by the Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) has taken a similar trajectory, expanding the scope of investigations from COVID-19 topics to other areas that are important for the general well-being of older adults in Singapore. This report showcases ROSA’s research involving older Singaporeans and the partnerships that have been forged in the past year. These developments will be presented in two sections. The first outlines the …

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler Nov 2022

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Acculturation attitudes commonly focus on minority and majority attitudes toward minority acculturation. However, because acculturation is a mutual process, not only are members of minority or migrant groups expected to experience acculturation, but members of the majority also are. In this study, I assessed the attitudes of 375 minority and majority students (Mage = 12.67 years, SD = 0.69, range 11–15, 46% female) in Swiss secondary schools toward (a) migration background students’ heritage culture maintenance and (b) dominant culture adoption, (c) majority students’ acquisition of cultural knowledge, and (d) schools’ endorsement of intercultural contact. This study extends the …

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang Nov 2022

How Collective Childcare Arrangements Are Sustained In Rural China During Socioeconomic Transformation, Xue Jiang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The ecological theory of cultural change suggests that socioeconomic development enhances individualism and weakens collectivism. Yet, collectivism in terms of childcare arrangements seems to persist in rapidly transforming China. It is possible that Confucian ideals and rural to urban migration promoted kin-based cooperation and enhanced collectivism. To explore such possibilities, forty-five caregivers of two generations from an ethnic village located in the Southwest of China were invited to share their childcare arrangements, priorities, and histories. Iterative thematic analyses revealed that improved life quality allowed caregivers the time and resources to attend to children’s personal well-being, whilst socioeconomic potentials and limitations …

Issue Of Multicultural People In Globalizing Japan: (Cultural) Identity, Mental Health And “Ibasho”, Kazuyo Suzuki, Michiko Ishibashi, Yumi Suzuki, Fumiteru Nitta

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The number of multicultural people has increased over many years with the globalization of the world economy. Japan is no exception. Ibasho is a Japanese unique concept and means one’s place where one feels secure, comfortable, and accepted. There are very few studies on ibasho among people with multicultural backgrounds. Suzuki (2018) refers to relationships among identity/cultural identity formation, mental health (including subjective well-being) and ibasho. In this paper, we examined the relationship among mental health, identity and ibasho with a focus on ibasho in the case of two groups of people with multicultural backgrounds: International students (N = 105) …

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

The studies in Uganda on the coverage of basic education teachers in the press are very few and this research went a long way to bridge the gap and to paint a picture of the nature of the coverage of education issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this research were to examine how teacher coverage in the Daily Monitor and the New Vision related with the frames and themes, identify the teacher frames and examine the major themes published. The theoretical framework included the framing theory and the agenda setting theory. The researcher used mixed methods research approach. …

Citizenship Disparities, Emily Ryo, Reed Humphrey Nov 2022

Citizenship Disparities, Emily Ryo, Reed Humphrey

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Citizenship is “nothing less than the right to have rights,” wrote Chief Justice Warren in his Perez v. Brownell dissent. Yet no study to date has been able to systematically investigate agency decisions to grant or deny citizenship in an administrative process called naturalization adjudication. This Article presents the first comprehensive empirical study of contemporary naturalization adjudication outcomes in the United States. Drawing on new and unique administrative data obtained through extensive Freedom of Information Act litigation, this study analyzes over 2.6 million naturalization decisions made by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) between 2015 and 2018. These decisions …

Gruel And Unusual: Prison Punishment Diets And The Eighth Amendment, Jackie Cuellar Nov 2022

Gruel And Unusual: Prison Punishment Diets And The Eighth Amendment, Jackie Cuellar

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

For as long as prisons have existed, food has been used as a mechanism of prisoner control. One of the earliest forms of food as punishment was the aptly named “bread-and-water diet,” providing prisoners with just 700 calories per day. The diet was later deemed cruel and unusual in violation of the Eighth Amendment, but this was far from the last use of food as punishment in prisons. Today, one disciplinary diet persists in correctional facilities across the country—nutraloaf. The exact recipe for nutraloaf varies but typically involves blending together bread, potatoes, non-dairy cheese, beans, fruits, and vegetables, shaping it …

Community Health Sciences

Background: Preterm birth remains the major cause of neonatal death worldwide. South Asia contributes disproportionately to deaths among preterm births worldwide, yet few population-based studies have assessed the underlying causes of deaths. Novel evaluations, including histological and bacteriological assessments of placental and fetal tissues, facilitate more precise determination of the underlying causes of preterm deaths. We sought to assess underlying and contributing causes of preterm neonatal deaths in India and Pakistan.
Methods: The project to understand and research preterm pregnancy outcomes and stillbirths in South Asia (PURPOSe) was a prospective cohort study done in three hospitals in Davangere, India, and …

Beliefs About Homework, Elizabeth Rose Taylor Smith

Dissertations

This mixed-methods research study aimed to learn the perspectives regarding homework of parents and teachers of students in grades two, three, and four. The definition used to define homework was based on Simplicio’s (2005) definition of homework as a period set aside to put in a plan to expand learning skills and support information that the student gained while in the classroom. There were three research questions that guided this mixed-methods research study; What are the parents’ perceptions of second, third, and fourth-grade students regarding homework? What are the perceptions of second, third, and fourth-grade teachers regarding homework? What are …

We provide the first solar system wide compendium of speleogenic processes and products. An examination of 15 solar system bodies revealed that six cave‐forming processes occur beyond Earth including volcanic (cryo and magmatic), fracturing (tectonic and impact melt), dissolution, sublimation, suffusion, and landslides. Although no caves (i.e., confirmed entrances with associated linear passages) have been confirmed, 3,545 SAPs (subsurface access points) have been identified on 11 planetary bodies and the potential for speleogenic processes (and thus SAPs) was observed on an additional four planetary bodies. The bulk of our knowledge on extraterrestrial SAPs is based on global databases for the …

Protests And Calls For Boycotting The Qatar World Cup 2022 Spark Online Discussion And Action Away From The Soccer Pitch, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Stephen P. Andon, Bond Benton, Keith Green, Keith Strudler

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Global sporting events regularly spark conversations on issues beyond the playing field, including those at the nexus of sport and geopolitics. This year’s World Cup is no exception, a conversation that began soon after the event was awarded by FIFA to Qatar, a Middle Eastern nation with a population of just over 3 million residents – exponentially smaller than typical hosts of such events – and with a record of exploitative labor systems and a highly questionable human rights record. While this conversation has led to protests and investigative reports on a range of news networks, it has also become …

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

While the World Cup is historically a source of national pride for competing nations, the globalization of the sport of soccer and the expansion of coverage of top soccer leagues from around the world also creates the opportunity for sports fans to build a strong sense of fandom for athletes from around the globe. Therefore, while we would expect fans to cheer for their “home” nation and athletes in the upcoming World Cup, we also recognize that fans may have cheering alliances that reside outside national borders. Using the United States as example, its fans have increasingly chosen favorite teams …

A Preview Of Post Amnesty Twitter: Analysis Of “Groomer” On Twitter After The Colorado Springs Shooting, Bond Benton, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Keith Strudler, Keith Green

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

On November 24, 2022 Elon Musk stated that “general amnesty” would be given to Twitter accounts previously suspended for violent threats, harassment and misinformation. This appears to reflect Musk’s previously stated intent to run the platform as a “free speech absolutist.” The question in many people’s minds is what such an incarnation of Twitter will look like. The tragic shooting at an LGBTQIA+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Nov. 19-20 and the reaction the event generated on the platform provide a case that demonstrates the tensions that will come with reduced platform moderation. “Groomer,” a previously Twitter restricted slur …

Understanding The Role Of Activated Sludge In Oxygen Transfer: Effects Of Sludge Settleability, Solids Retention Time, And Nitrification Reaction, Ken Campbell, Jianmin Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current understanding on the oxygen transfer in activated sludge process is primarily developed based on two-phase systems, focusing only on oxygen transfer from air to water. However, this research demonstrates that activated sludge particles significantly impact oxygen transfer from air all the way to the microorganisms. Three bench-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors, operated under the same influent loading and dissolved oxygen level but different solids retention times (SRTs), were used to develop oxygen transfer performance data as effects of different sludge property parameters. These reactors were also operated under batch modes to further validate the effect of nitrification reaction …

Louis Pasteur Signature Saying: Science Brings Men Closer To God Bicentenary Year: 200 Years After His Birth, Alan L. Gillen, Justin A. Ambrose

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This year (2022) marks the bicentenary birth (December 27, 1822) of Louis Pasteur. He has a global reputation. His contributions can be seen in our homes, in the "pasteurized" products derived from one of his discoveries and in disease prevention. It was in his discovery of gently heating beverages and food for what we today call pasteurization that he first said: “Man's first look at the universe discovers only variety, diversity, multiplicity of phenomena. Let this gaze be enlightened by science — by science which brings man closer to God — and simplicity and unity shine everywhere.” Louis Pasteur (Vallery-Radot, …

Comparison Review Of The Production, Microbiology, And Sensory Profile Of Lambic And American Coolship Ales, John Carriglio, Drew Budner, Katherine A. Thompson-Witrick

Chemistry

Sour beers have been traditionally brewed with spontaneous fermentation. This has been occurring in Belgium for hundreds of years, and more recently in the United States as the American craft beer industry has boomed. Belgian sour styles include lambics, which are mirrored in a burgeoning style called the American coolship ale (ACA). American beers have much more creative leeway than their Belgian counterparts, as American craft brewing tends to incorporate more contemporary techniques and ingredients than their traditional European forebears. This review paper will summarize the history, production methods, fermentation, microbiological profiles, and sensory profiles of Belgian lambics and American …
