Collective Mindfulness And Strategy, Aniruddha Chatterjee Nov 2022

Collective Mindfulness And Strategy, Aniruddha Chatterjee

Management Collection

Contemporary organizations are continually exposed to profound uncertainty and novelty. The collective mindfulness of organizational members facilitates sensing and interpretation of such environmental changes to effectively respond, adapt, and evolve. Collective mindfulness is a capability that enables organizational members to be alert to their context while continuously learning and ‘thinking on their feet’.

Despite the growing popularity of the concept since its inception around three decades ago, research on collective mindfulness nevertheless remains nascent. Several research opportunities and gaps have been identified, but inadequately addressed. For instance, much extant research on collective mindfulness has focused on High-Reliability Organizations (HROs) such …

I work in the broad areas of computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, neural networks, machine learning, deep learning, game theory, mathematical logic, and natural language processing. I am also actively working in the area of algorithmic fairness and explainable AI (XAI). Currently, we are developing neuro-symbolic logic learning systems for common sense reasoning, which aims to augment the existing conventional artificial intelligence, which is logically based. The neuro-symbolic logic-based systems will provide more accurate results than their GOAI (Good Old Artificial Intelligence) version. We are also working on the area of abstractive summarization methods. We intend to develop an efficient abstractive …

Inclusion And Belonging In Irish Higher Education For Black And Minority Ethnic Students, Fionnuala Darby Nov 2022

Inclusion And Belonging In Irish Higher Education For Black And Minority Ethnic Students, Fionnuala Darby

Articles

Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical prism, this study interrogates the sense of belonging and inclusion experienced by Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students on one higher education campus in Ireland. The most important story told within the study is as simple as it is complicated. The simple part is that the BME students felt that the campus was inclusive and that they experienced a sense of belonging. The complicated part is that the findings are premised in a normative assumption of whiteness as evidenced by numerous and incremental moments of exclusion in the daily experience of microaggressions, …

An Evidence Review Of Behavioural Economics In The Justice Sector, Brian Barry, Lucia Morales, Aiden Carthy Nov 2022

An Evidence Review Of Behavioural Economics In The Justice Sector, Brian Barry, Lucia Morales, Aiden Carthy

Articles

Behavioural economics combines elements of economics and psychology to better understand how and why people behave the way they do in the real world. While behavioural economics originally sought to better understand economic decision-making, it has since grown in scope and application, and it is increasingly used by governments, government departments and other organisations to shape and implement public policies in a range of policy areas. This Review considers the application of behavioural economics theories and concepts (commonly referred to as behavioural insights) to the justice sector in a range of areas of justice policy in different jurisdictions. Areas of …

Carum Carvi Modulates Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity: Effects On Tnf-Α, Nf-Κb, And Caspases, Tahir Maqbool Mir, Muneeb U. Rehman, Mohammad Khalid Ashfaq, Wajhul Qamar

Faculty and Student Publications

Carum carvi is a well-known herb traditionally used as a spice in Asian countries. Acetaminophen is a known marketed drug mainly used as an analgesic. It has been scientifically proven that consumption of acetaminophen (paracetamol) is associated with liver toxicity if taken in high doses without medical supervision. The present study evaluated the in vivo antioxidant and hepatoprotective efficacy of Carum carvi against acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats. Our results demonstrate that Carum carvi, at doses (mg/kg) of 100 (D1) and 200 (D2), showed inhibitory properties for DNA-sugar damage, lipid peroxidation, DPPH scavenging, and increased reducing potential in a concentration-dependent …

Decision Support Approach Based Rough Sets Theory To Investigate The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Drug User (Year-Based Definition), Abdelbaset A. Hares, H. A. Mohamed, Miad Abu Hawsah

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

There is no doubt that the use of drugs has significant consequences for society, it introduces risk into the human life, increasing risk of poor health and greater earlier mortality and morbidity. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and machine learning can provide useful tools for analyzing this problem; various methods have been given by researchers for increasing the prediction rate of drug users. This work proposes a decision support approach to investigate the relationship between drug user (year-based user definition) and personality traits. Psychologists approved the recent personality traits Five Factor Model (FFM) for understanding human individual differences. Two …

Chief Justice Mogoeng V Africa4palestine And Others [2021] Jsc/819/20; Jsc/825/20; And Jsc/ 826/20, Dunia P. Zongwe

SAIPAR Case Review

This is a judgment against the first judge among his peers: the Chief Justice. Handed down by the Judicial Conduct Committee (JCC) of South Africa’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC), this judgment involves the remarks made in 2020 by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng at a webinar hosted by a pro-Israel, conservative, Zionist newspaper. During that webinar, Mogoeng criticized the South African government’s official policy on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Following Mogoeng’s faux pas and a loud public outcry, three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) lodged complaints with the JCC against Mogoeng for his Israel comments.

This appeal judgment largely confirms the JCC’s earlier complaint …

Microfibers: Environmental Problems And Textile Solutions, Js Weis, Falco F De

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

Microplastics have become a topic of considerable concern and intensive study over the past decade. They have been found everywhere in the oceans, including the deepest trenches and remotest parts of the Arctic. They are ingested by many animals and some are incorporated into tissues. There is considerable effort in studying what effects they have on marine life. It has become clear that when water samples are collected in ways that prevent most long thin particles from escaping through pores of a net, the most abundant type of microplastics found in water and sediments are microfibers (fibers with dimensions less …

Deepfake Fight: Ai-Powered Disinformation And Perfidy Under The Geneva Conventions, David Nicholas Allen Nov 2022

Deepfake Fight: Ai-Powered Disinformation And Perfidy Under The Geneva Conventions, David Nicholas Allen

Notre Dame Journal on Emerging Technologies

Deception and disinformation are as much a part of the battlefield as bullets and bombs. However, just like with bullets and bombs, if the law does not properly regulate a capability’s use the capability could degrade faith in the law. In this respect, this paper examines deepfake technology, a modern artificial intelligence-based capability that can generate superficially-perfect yet wholly invented media content. The paper looks ahead to its potential future applications in armed conflict, processes the ways in which current law contemplates such deception, and distills recommendations for improving governance where needed.

Design: Retrospective chart review.

Setting: Henry Ford Health System (HFHS).

Patients or Participants: Data was collected for 1485 adult patients who received hysterectomies within HFHS for benign and malignant conditions. The control group (group 1) was obtained via retrospective chart review to include patients who had a hysterectomy between January 2019 and June 2020 and received cefazolin alone as antibiotic prophylaxis. The treatment group (group 2) included …

Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney Nov 2022

Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoë Sweaney

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The following paper summarizes the implications, processes, and preliminary findings from a research study conducted by an undergraduate psychology student at Lindenwood University. The study experimentally investigated the relationship between a juror’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood that they would choose to convict a randomly selected defendant. It was hypothesized that a participant of a higher SES would be more likely to convict a defendant than would a participant of a lower SES. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, participants (N=13) posing as jurors completed an online survey in which they were tasked with evaluating the details of …

Livingstone Motor Assemblers Limited (In Receivership) V Indeco Estates Development Company And Others (Supreme Court Judgment No. 1 Of 2013), Ntemena Mwanamwambwa

SAIPAR Case Review

The appeal stems from a winding-up petition filed in the High Court by the respondents seeking an order to commence winding-up proceedings as well as the appointment of a liquidator in respect of the appellant, Livingstone Motor Assemblers Limited. The latter was heavily indebted to several creditors, including the respondents and the Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZANACO) which had commenced receivership proceedings and appointed a receiver/manager extra judiciously, prior to the High Court granting the winding-up order. Disgruntled by the grant of the order, the receiver/manager made an application to vary it so that only he would retain possession of …

Standard Chartered Bank Plc V Celine Meena Nair [2019] Zmca 221, Ntemena Mwanamwambwa, Milambo Chibbonta-Pupwe

SAIPAR Case Review

This case is one of a kind and therefore significant for several reasons in the jurisprudence of Zambian Employment Law. The case highlights that the employer-employee relationship is one founded on the implied term of mutual trust and confidence which entails that both parties must accord each other due trust and respect regardless of status.

The decision in this case, sets a clear and stern tone in cases of constructive dismissal bordering on toxicity within the working environment. Thus, employers are put on notice to adhere to their own grievance procedures particularly in cases involving bullying, harassment and victimization such …
