Fostering Success: An Examination Of The Influence Of First-Generation Scholars Programs On Latinx College Students Throughout Their Educational Journey, Lori Salazar

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

This study investigates the influence of participation in first-generation scholars programs (FGSPs) on the educational journey of first-generation Latinx college students. The research question guiding this inquiry is: How does participation in FGSPs affect Latinx college students throughout their educational journey? Qualitative research methods were employed to address this question, including in-depth interviews with six Latinx first-generation college students who participated in FGSPs. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify patterns and themes within the data. The findings reveal that participation in FGSPs significantly contributes to Latinx students’ academic success, retention, and educational experiences. Key themes emerging from the data included …

Active And Retroactive Digital Newspaper Preservation, Andrew Mcdonnell Jun 2024

Active And Retroactive Digital Newspaper Preservation, Andrew Mcdonnell

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

The University of Kentucky Libraries’ (UKL) long-running efforts to document and provide access to the state’s history via newspaper preservation have necessarily evolved over the last 80 years. As news formats and preservation technologies have changed, particularly in relation to born-digital media, the libraries’ efforts have had to keep pace. The race to preserve these materials before they disappear or are locked away on media inaccessible to modern computers is not always chronologically linear, though. Digital archivists and librarians must sometimes straddle multiple generations of technology to successfully migrate, capture, and otherwise preserve digital publications, and there is no single …

Schwarzenbach Goes South, Padraig Rooney Jun 2024

Schwarzenbach Goes South, Padraig Rooney

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach arrived in the United States in late August 1936 at the invitation of the American photographer Barbara Hamilton Wright. It was the first of three visits over the next five years, during which Annemarie reported on Roosevelt’s America for a variety of Swiss newspapers and illustrated magazines. Her first road trip through the Rust Belt was a success with her Swiss editors and the two women planned a second in the American South in the Fall of 1937. In late September, they boarded third class on the S.S. Berengaria, bound for New York. The effect …

Shadows Of Virtue: ‘The Abolition Of Man’ In Modern Context, Luke Thomas Soule Jun 2024

Shadows Of Virtue: ‘The Abolition Of Man’ In Modern Context, Luke Thomas Soule

Communication Studies

C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man stands as a remarkable examination of the mid-19th century shift towards moral subjectivism. With a detailed study of this text, this essay will utilize ideological and Postmodern criticism to reveal how Lewis builds his defense of objective morality, or what he calls the "Tao," against the educational spread of relativism. The heart of the analysis is the examination of Lewis's use of ideographs. Terms such as "the Tao," "Men without Chests," and "the Abolition of Man'' not only criticize the philosophical trends of the time but also tap into a deep cultural current of …

Brain and Mind Institute

INTRODUCTION Brain-derived extracellular vesicles (BEVs) in blood allows for minimally-invasive investigations of central nervous system (CNS) -specific markers of age-related neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). Polymer-based EV- and immunoprecipitation (IP)-based BEV-enrichment protocols from blood have gained popularity. We systematically investigated protocol consistency across studies, and determined CNS-specificity of proteins associated with these protocols.

METHODS NDD articles investigating BEVs in blood using polymer-based and/or IP-based BEV enrichment protocols were systematically identified, and protocols compared. Proteins used for BEV-enrichment and/or post-enrichment were assessed for CNS- and brain-cell-type-specificity, extracellular domains (ECD+), and presence in EV-databases.

RESULTS A total of 82.1% of studies used polymer-based (ExoQuick) …

Effective Removal Of Article Iii Judges: Case Suspensions And The Constitutional Limits Of Judicial Self-Policing, Jack Brake Jun 2024

Effective Removal Of Article Iii Judges: Case Suspensions And The Constitutional Limits Of Judicial Self-Policing, Jack Brake

University of Chicago Law Review

Under the Judicial Conduct and Disability Act of 1980 (JCDA), it falls to federal judges in each circuit to investigate and redress complaints about their col- leagues’ behavior. A controversial provision of the Act authorizes the temporary suspension of misbehaving judges from new case assignments. Judges suspended under the Act—most recently, Judge Pauline Newman in the Federal Circuit—have argued that this amounts to effectively removing them from office without impeachment, violating constitutional protections of judicial tenure and independence. No court has invalidated a suspension on this basis so far. Yet courts have reserved the question taken up here, namely whether …

From First Gen To Faculty: A Narrative Study Of First-Generation College Students Who Became Community College Faculty, Patrick Nevins

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of first-generation community college faculty through narrative inquiry. Qualitative data were collected through semi-standard interviews with full-time community college faculty who were first-generation college students. In the first level of analysis, narrative accounts were created from the data, and in the second level of analysis, narrative accounts were compared for the identification of codes. Three themes emerged from data analysis: (a) being college bound from school age, (b) facing barriers to academic success as undergraduates, and (c) relating to students as faculty. The implications of the study are that first-generation …

The Constructs Of Teacher Well-Being: A Phenomenological Study, Alicia Nohe-Dirk

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of teachers who embodied a sense of professional well-being while in the workplace. The teachers who participated in this study self-identified as embodying the phenomenon and participated in one semi-structured, recorded interview lasting no longer than one hour, and were asked to respond to two journal prompts. This study answers one primary question and addresses two secondary questions: 1. Primary question: What experiences in the workplace contribute to a teacher’s sense of well-being? 2. Secondary questions: A) What current experience has contributed to your sense of well-being? …

Burning “Between Two Fires”: The Individual Under Erasure In Hassan Blasim’S “The Nightmares Of Carlos Fuentes”, Gautam Basu Thakur Jun 2024

Burning “Between Two Fires”: The Individual Under Erasure In Hassan Blasim’S “The Nightmares Of Carlos Fuentes”, Gautam Basu Thakur

Humanities and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay uses Freudian–Lacanian psychoanalytic theory to interpret Hassan Blasim’s short story “The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes”. Blasim’s story depicts the psychological struggles of an Iraqi emigrant relating to his embattled sense of belonging in a Dutch society due to the recurrent nightmares of his “traumatic” past. It challenges his assimilationist fantasies. I develop Lacan’s idea of ontological lack as a structural susceptibility that is exacerbated by actual experiences of trauma to underline how racialized refugees from the war-torn global South are doubly vulnerable to experiencing subjective dehiscence between their efforts to forget past war traumas and the challenges of …

Creation And Fill Of An Eocene Incision On A Leeward Margin Of An Isolated Carbonate Platform, Northeast Sirte Basin, Libya, Muneer Abdalla, Wan Yang, Abdlsaid Ibrahem, Salah Hassan, Alzobeere Bogzil

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recognition of incised valleys and the reconstruction of their filling history are significant for defining unconformity surfaces and their stratigraphic framework, particularly when detailed petrographic data are missing. However, little of such research is published so far on the characterization and factors influencing the development of incised valleys using three-dimensional seismic and well data. Thus, this work aims to examine and analyze the geometry and factors controlling the formation and sediments filling of an eocene incised valley in a sequence stratigraphic frame using an integration of three-dimensional seismic and well data from ne sirte basin, libya. The eocene incised …

Avoiding Pragmatic Oddity: A Bottom-Up Defeasible Deontic Logic, Guido Governatori, Silvano Colombo Tosatto, Antonio Rotolo Jun 2024

Avoiding Pragmatic Oddity: A Bottom-Up Defeasible Deontic Logic, Guido Governatori, Silvano Colombo Tosatto, Antonio Rotolo

Centre for Computational Law (2022-2025)

This paper presents an extension of Defeasible Deontic Logic to deal with the Pragmatic Oddity problem. The logic applies three general principles: (i) the Pragmatic Oddity problem must be solved within a general logical treatment of contrary-to-duty (CTD) reasoning; (ii) non-monotonic methods must be adopted to handle CTD reasoning; (iii) logical models of CTD reasoning must be computationally feasible and, if possible, efficient. The proposed extension of Defeasible Deontic Logic elaborates a preliminary version of the model proposed by Governatori and Rotolo [15]. The previous solution was based on particular characteristics of the (constructive, top-down) proof theory of the logic. …

Examining Transformational Resistance Through Asiancrit-Informed Counterstories: The Impact Of Perceived Covid-19 Related Anti-Asian Hate On Pathways To Liberation, Trisha Lynette Lee

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

The COVID-19 global pandemic paired with the open access to information through countless media outlets brought a resurgence of yellow peril. This research study explores the intersection of model minority notions and anti-Asian hate. Through shared storytelling of multiple generations, this study demonstrates the continued struggle that Chinese Americans navigate as perpetual foreigners as they seek opportunities for greater voice and agency in schools and in their communities.

Challenges Of Mediating Investor-State Disputes, Mariam Gotsiridze Jun 2024

Challenges Of Mediating Investor-State Disputes, Mariam Gotsiridze

Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy

Mediation has gained a lot of traction in the context of ISDS in the past few years. There are many who truly believe that this could be an alternative to highly costly and lengthy investor-State arbitrations and litigations. States have started to include mediation in their investment treaties; institutions have designed separate mediation rules and procedures specifically for investor-State disputes. The 2022 International Dispute Resolution Survey from the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA) is a testament to this positive trend towards investor-State mediation. In the 2022 SIDRA Survey, the respondents signal increased acceptance of mediation in ISDS. Despite these …

It’S Not A Few, It’S All: How Political Elites Create And Construct The Meaning Of Terrorism And Apply It To An Entire Group, Jamarne Mcgill

Publications and Research

In the aftermath of the September 11th terror attacks, we witnessed political elites make adequate use of coded language in order to justify the implementation of an aggressive and punitive foreign policy in the Middle East. Terror attacks are disruptive, catastrophic events that tend to produce feelings of racial resentment and a desire for collective punishment toward an entire group of people. Although the perpetrators of a terror attack do not represent or speak for the majority of a much larger group, the general population of the nation or state that was attacked may not feel this way. Therefore, an …

Message Effectiveness Of Fear Appeals In Vaccination Communication Campaigns: A Systematic Review, Yam B. Limbu, Bruce A. Huhmann Jun 2024

Message Effectiveness Of Fear Appeals In Vaccination Communication Campaigns: A Systematic Review, Yam B. Limbu, Bruce A. Huhmann

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This systematic review of 54 cross-disciplinary peer-reviewed causal empirical studies helps public health officials, researchers, and healthcare professionals better comprehend the effects of fear appeals in vaccine promotional campaigns on message processing, persuasion, vaccination attitudes, and vaccination intentions. This review documents inconsistent findings across studies, which it attempts to clarify by considering differences in research designs, sample populations, and outcomes measured. In general, we find that fear appeals increase risk perceptions, message involvement, and vaccination attitudes. However, fear appeals have less influence on vaccination intentions, especially among female and general adult populations or populations from the U.S. and other Western …
