Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Why do we celebrate so often with good food? Festive meals are as ancient as they are contemporary, and have featured in books, films and stories since we began to tell them, from Beowulf to Big Night (1996). Feasts strengthen interpersonal and communal bonds, but also offer the chance to showcase wealth and generosity; however, being a host can be a challenge as well.

Differential Methylation Region Detection Via An Array-Adaptive Normalized Kernelweighted Model, Daniel Alhassan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Akim Adekpedjou Jun 2024

Differential Methylation Region Detection Via An Array-Adaptive Normalized Kernelweighted Model, Daniel Alhassan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Akim Adekpedjou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A differentially methylated region (DMR) is a genomic region that has significantly different methylation patterns between biological conditions. Identifying DMRs between different biological conditions is critical for developing disease biomarkers. Although methods for detecting DMRs in microarray data have been introduced, developing methods with high precision, recall, and accuracy in determining the true length of DMRs remains a challenge. In this study, we propose a normalized kernel-weighted model to account for similar methylation profiles using the relative probe distance from "nearby" CpG sites. We also extend this model by proposing an array-adaptive version in attempt to account for the differences …

Comparing The Us Response To The Soviet Invasion Of Afghanistan And The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine: Learning From The Past And Planning For The Future, Zachary Hogan Jun 2024

Comparing The Us Response To The Soviet Invasion Of Afghanistan And The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine: Learning From The Past And Planning For The Future, Zachary Hogan

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

As the Russo-Ukrainian war continues to rage, the decisions of the present are of paramount importance. In order to make the most positive and well-supported decisions in this ongoing conflict, it would be wise to look to past instances of similar situations. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is such an instance. The parallels between the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the past Soviet invasion of Afghanistan are extensive and, more importantly, informative for U.S. foreign policy. It is with this lens that this paper will pursue a historical foreign policy analysis of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, its circumstances and …

The Role Of Macroprudential Policies Under Carbon Pricing, Maria Teresa Punzi Jun 2024

The Role Of Macroprudential Policies Under Carbon Pricing, Maria Teresa Punzi

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This paper analyses the effectiveness of macroprudential policy on macro-financial fluctuations when the government enforces carbon pricing to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the net-zero target. A carbon tax policy alone can reduce carbon emissions by 2030, but at the cost of a deep and prolonged recession, with consequential financial instability due to a higher probability of default on entrepreneurs in the brown sector. This result suggests that carbon pricing should be coupled with complementary policies, such as macroprudential policy. In particular, differentiated LTV ratios and differentiated capital requirements that penalize the brown sector in favour of the green sector …

Mindfulness In Motherhood, Kenzi Kuemper

OT Student Capstones

The postpartum period is a vital healing window for new mothers who are undergoing serious physical, psychological, and hormonal changes. The current United States healthcare system fails to provide guidance and assistance for the role changes that occur in motherhood that impact daily habits, routines, and goals of women and their children. A substantial lack of education exists for healthcare professionals working with pregnant and postpartum women, by women themselves, and by society as a whole. Serious musculoskeletal, psychological, and social concerns commonly arise for many women after giving birth. The purpose of this capstone project was to attempt to …

Exploring The Role Of International Rankings In The Development Of Institutional Public Relations Strategies, Hamzah Ramadhan, Dian Ayuria Sarwono

The study employed in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 37 first-year students attending a private institution. The study revealed that students' decision-making process in selecting a private university was intricate and involved multiple aspects. In addition to rankings, students also considered variables such as parental …

A Study On The Pattern Of Selfie Culture Among University Students In Bangladesh, Moriom Begum Mim, A S.M Asaduzzaman

Informasi

This study endeavors to explore the determinants behind the prevalence of selfie culture in the light of selfpresentation strategies. It applied Erving Goffman’s (1959) Self-Presentation theory to scrutinize the pattern of selfie culture among university students in Bangladesh. Following a qualitative methodology, semistructured interviews were conducted among 20 participants as a purposive sample age range from 20 to 25 years old. The results demonstrate that the participants tend to invest considerable attention to take selfies, afterward use filters to maximize the “best version” of the self, and eventually post them in the digital world. Their desire to represent the “best …

International Ownership And Smes In Middle Eastern And African Economies, Mina Baliamoune-Lutz, Mohamed A.K. Basuony, Stefan H.H. Lutz, Ehab K.A. Mohamed

Faculty Journal Articles

Empirical evidence on the benefits of international ownership for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) financial performance is either not available for most African and Middle Eastern countries or presents mixed results. In this paper, we investigate this further by examining the effects of ownership structure on firm performance, using financial data covering SMEs in 60 African and Middle Eastern countries, for the years 2006–2015. Results from pooled ordinary least squares and random-effects estimations indicate that international ownership is significantly positively correlated with firm performance for (most of) Africa and the Middle East. Examining the interaction of international ownership with capital …

Old Wine In A New Bottle? – An Empirical Evaluation Of The Judicial Reforms In China In The 2010s, Peter C.H. Chan

UC Law SF International Law Review

This article provides an empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of the judicial reform measures implemented in China in the 2010s. Among other objectives, the reforms aimed to strengthen the independence of judges, the financial autonomy of courts and the professionalism of adjudicators. Critics have questioned the success of the reforms, citing continued government intervention with adjudication and unchanged structural problems with courts. To date, there has been limited empirical literature focusing specifically on the judicial reform measures in the 2010s in China. This article provides a glimpse into what really was happening on the ground since the reforms through the …

Cultivating Agriculture - Cultivando Agricultura: Content Creator, Sophia L. Garcia

Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports

Agriculture is rooted in culture, yet we rarely discuss the people who drive the industry today. Many voices have yet to share their stories of influencing or making a difference in the agriculture industry. As a result, the idea of a podcast arose as a free, convenient, and accessible way for everyone to hear and communicate stories. During the project, my co-host, Daniela Ramos, and I will work together to address this issue. To diversify and separate the workload, we will each host three episodes individually. As part of my role, I will also be responsible for marketing, including creating …
