Soldiers Of Christ, Angels Of Mercy: The Daughters Of Charity In Los Angeles, 1856–1888, Michael E. Engh S.J.
Vincentian Studies
This article describes the challenges the Daughters of Charity faced on the American frontier and how they successfully coped with them. Their efforts “contributed to the ongoing Americanization of their denomination” because the Daughters adapted their religious practices to life on the frontier. They responded to local needs and their works expanded far beyond the initial founding of a school and an orphanage. Among other things, they built a hospital, served as nurses and found jobs for women. As the first female business executives in Los Angeles, they did creative fund-raising for their own projects and for many Catholic causes. …

Islands Of Deutschtum: German Americans In Manchester, New Hampshire And Lawrence, Massachusetts, 1870-1942, Robert Paul Mccaffery
Doctoral Dissertations
The history of the German-American communities of Manchester, New Hampshire and Lawrence, Massachusetts raises several important issues about German immigration to the United States. Comprising only a small percentage of the population of the two cities German immigrants founded a distinctive culture--islands of Deutschtum--as vibrant as those in the "German belt" of the Midwest. The historiography has generally concluded that German-Americans could not unite in common cause, and that World War I ended German culture in America. However, not only did Germans in Manchester and Lawrence unite, but they maintained Deutschtum through World War I into World War II.

Implications Of The United States Ratification Of The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child: Civil Rights, The Constitution And The Family, Barbara J. Nauck
Cleveland State Law Review
This note begins with an examination of why the UNCRC has yet to be ratified in this country. The perspective of children's rights advocates is discussed. A comparison of Romano-Germanic and common law is presented to facilitate an understanding of the major differences that affect the way the UNCRC is viewed under the two systems. The effect of a treaty, self-executing or not, in United States' courts is examined. Civil Rights Articles 13, 14,15 and 16 in the Convention are linguistically analyzed and the United States law applicable to each Article is reviewed for its compatibility with the UNCRC. This …

State Anti-Smoking Legislation And The Demand For Cigarettes, Jean Mcintire
State Anti-Smoking Legislation And The Demand For Cigarettes, Jean Mcintire
Honors Papers
This paper evaluates the effects of anti-smoking legislation on cigarette sales across the fifty states for the years 1975 through 1990. The relevance of this issue can be entertained from several perspectives as it pertains to both smokers and non-smokers contrasting the right to smoke with the right to breathe clean air. Anti-smoking legislation was initiated from early on in our country's legal history, not as a method of protecting non-smokers from the externalities imposed upon them by smokers with respect to their right to clean air, but rather in light of smoking's inherent fire hazards. The most significant development …

Honors Papers
Due to changing demographics in the United States' elderly population, adequate senior housing is becoming a major concern for an increasing number of Americans. Issues and concerns of housing are related to a multitude of issues surrounding aging including the retention of one's independence and adaptation to age-related changes, the physical, the cognitive, the environmental. One of the most recent developments in senior housing is the continuing care retirement community (CCRC). This research focuses on Kendal at Oberlin, a newly constructed CCRC in Oberlin, Ohio.
Methodologically, data were gathered with resident-targeted and management and staff-targeted surveys. Research goals include delineating resident …

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron
Honors Theses
The following pages are a collection of three case studies assembled with the intent to facilitate discussion about key leadership issues related to the public policy realm. Critics of leadership studies have often posted to the theoretical nature o the discipline to criticize the worth. One method to teach leadership is the utilization of case studies, or "real world" examples. If your position is that leadership can only be taught through practical experience, these case studies should present an interesting exercise. They seek to inculcate the idealistic world of theoretical studies with doses of realistic situations.
For these case studies …

Historically, most Americans have treated health care as a private commodity whose price, and therefore availability, is primarily determined by market forces. In such a context, the law not unsurprisingly places a high premium on information disclosure by physicians. Personal autonomy-an individual's power to choose among medical options-enjoys its most zealous protection under U.S. jurisprudence.7 The dominant U.S. version of informed consent is grounded on principles of patient/consumer autonomy, and seems to enhance market choice. But a strong theme of collectivism now runs through some discussions of U.S. health policy.8 President Clinton was elected at least in part …

Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C.
Elizabeth Seton: Her World And Her Church, Judith Metz S.C.
Vincentian Studies
The first part of this article gives the political, social, economic, and religious context of the world in which Elizabeth Seton lived. The second part describes the establishment and work of the Sisters of Charity. Education for all was important to early Americans, largely because everyone was supposed to read the Bible. Women had more agency than their European counterparts, although their influence was still mostly confined to the home. They were charged with instilling morality in children, and through them, in society in general. This was reflected in the curriculum of Elizabeth Seton’s school, Saint Joseph’s Academy. The outlook …

The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 1793–1803, Marilyn Thei S.C.
Vincentian Studies
Marilyn Thei’s highly detailed article examines Elizabeth Seton “within the context of her world, amidst life in late eighteenth-century New York City as experienced by women of her class, race, and age.” Thei uses the writing of Elizabeth and her peers as well as sources of feminist scholarship to do this. Elizabeth’s life is often contrasted with lives of women from other races and classes. The topics covered include the extent of Elizabeth’s engagement with the world of fashion and entertainment, the nature of her relationships with her husband and with her dearest friend, her experience of motherhood, her role …
The Changing Significance Of Race For People Of Color, Juanita Tamayo Lott
The Changing Significance Of Race For People Of Color, Juanita Tamayo Lott
Trotter Review
For more than two hundred years, race in the United States has been viewed as a black/white issue. Blacks have been defined not as a people unto themselves, but only in relationship to whites. This relationship is one of power with blacks as a “minority subordinate” group and whites as a “majority dominant” group. Other people of color—whether indigenous to the Americas, settlers who predated Western Europeans, nonwhite settlers with several generations of U.S.-born residents, or newly arrived immigrants and refugees—have been primarily defined as nonexistent. When other people of color have been recognized, it has been in a marginal …
Culture, Human Capital, And The Earnings Of West Indian Blacks, Stephen A. Woodbury
Culture, Human Capital, And The Earnings Of West Indian Blacks, Stephen A. Woodbury
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper offers an empirical analysis of West Indians' performance in the U.S. labor market, drawing adjusted comparisons between the earnings of native-born black American men of West Indian ancestry and the earnings of other native-born men, both black and white. The data required for these comparisons come from the 1980 Census of Population, in which native-born respondents reported their ancestry. The results offer a mixed picture of the success of West Indians, suggesting that native-born blacks of West Indian ancestry do have somewhat higher earnings than other native-born blacks, other things equal. Nevertheless, there is still a large earnings …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Detailed DNA sequencing of the triple-helical domain of type III procollagen was carried out on cDNA prepared from 54 patients with aortic aneurysms. The 43 male and 11 female patients originated from 50 different families and five different nationalities. 43 patients had at least one additional blood relative who had aneurysms. Five overlapping asymmetric PCR products, covering all the coding sequences of the triple-helical domain of type III procollagen, were sequenced with 28 specific sequencing primers. Analysis of the sequencing gels revealed only two nucleotide changes that altered the structure of the protein. One was a substitution of threonine for …

Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams
Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams
Master's Theses
President Reagan assumed office advocating an economic program based on tax and spending reductions. Achievement of these objectives, Reagan argued, would improve the American economy and result in balanced federal budgets. This thesis examines Reagan's commitment to the spending restraint element of his program. I will analyze all of Reagan's budgets and State of the Union addresses to determine how consistently he sought reductions in federal spending.
Though Reagan's commitment to budget reduction was evident, his selection of means to achieve the cuts was inconsistent. His proposed budget cuts varied in intensity, and Reagan failed to propose consistent reductions in …
