Bridging Conflicting Ideologies: The Origins Of American And British Occupational Therapy., Ruth L. Schemm
Bridging Conflicting Ideologies: The Origins Of American And British Occupational Therapy., Ruth L. Schemm
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
Occupational therapy practice has bridged two contradictory value systems for more than 100 years. This article describes the origins of practice ideas in both the United States and Britain and demonstrates that founding members of the occupational therapy profession all shared a core of humanistic beliefs while embracing the emerging paradigm of scientific medicine. The result has been an intellectual tension between the biological and the psychosocial aspects of practice. For more than 75 years, occupational therapists struggled to balance the art and science of patient care; recent debates on modalities, practice domains, and research priorities indicate that the unifying …

"An Active And Energetic Bishop": The Appointment Of Joseph Glass, C.M., As Bishop Of Salt Lake City, Stafford Poole C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Vincentian Joseph Glass was the bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1915 to 1926. He was appointed because he was considered “vigorous and competent,” and the diocese desperately needed that kind of leadership. His appointment was also due to the influence of Bishop Thomas Conaty of Los Angeles and the fact that Archbishop Patrick Riordan of San Francisco died “at a crucial point in the search” for a bishop for Salt Lake. Controversy during Glass’s career prior to his elevation, the problems of the diocese of Salt Lake, and the troubles surrounding other proposed successors to the bishopric are …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
This is the first of two studies on Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana. “The Ecclesiastical Seminary of Saint Vincent of Paul,” located in Bayou LaFourche, opened in November 1838 after about a decade of discussion. The Vincentians had initially refused to direct it because of the financial burden it would place on them and because of possible disruption to their existing seminary at the Barrens in Perryville, Missouri. However, John Timon accepted it because educating candidates for the priesthood was a Vincentian work. The circumstances of the seminary’s founding are recounted in detail. The seminary’s life, curriculum, faculty, and finances are …

Regulation Of Dental Hygienists: Its Effect On Disciplinary Action And Opinions Of Regulatory Board Members In The United States And Canada, Jodie A. Mueller
Regulation Of Dental Hygienists: Its Effect On Disciplinary Action And Opinions Of Regulatory Board Members In The United States And Canada, Jodie A. Mueller
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was to examine the effect of regulatory status (dentist versus dental hygienist control) on disciplinary sanctions for dental hygiene practitioners. The second was to assess the opinions of board members concerning the regulation of the practice of dental hygiene. Regulatory bodies from jurisdictions with and without dental hygiene self-regulation in both Canada and the United States respectively were examined to determine if differences exist in opinions and sanctions exercised by the two. A self-designed questionnaire titled the Mueller-Dental Hygiene Regulatory Questionnaire was used to obtain descriptive data on a sample of …

The African Independence Movement And United States Foreign Policy, 1945-1960, Vera Mclauchlin Wyche
History Theses & Dissertations
Throughout the Cold War, the United states and the soviet Union competed for the allegiance of the uncommitted areas of the world. Many of these areas, such as the newly emerging states of Africa sought independence from their colonial masters, some of whom were America's major allies. Yet the United States advocated only a gradual transition to independence lest the new states fall prey to instability and communist penetration.
This study examines the early cold war attempts of the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations to fashion a policy toward Africa which would please Europeans and Africans alike while preventing the growth …
Violence Prevention In The Schools, Deborah B. Prothrow-Stith
Violence Prevention In The Schools, Deborah B. Prothrow-Stith
New England Journal of Public Policy
Violence and its consequent injury and death represent a major health problem in this country. The United States has one of the highest homicide rates in the industrialized world: ten times higher than that of England and twenty times higher than that of Spain. Fatalities from violence represent only the tip of the iceberg: nonfatal intentional injuries occur as many as one hundred times more frequently: assault and intentional injuries identified in medical studies can be four times those reported to the police, suggesting that medical institutions are a primary site for identification of individuals with violence-related problems. Violence and …

Governmental regulation for environmental protection and other important public purposes can affect the manner in which land and natural resources are developed and used. The U.S. constitution (and most state constitutions) prohibit the government from "taking" property without payment of compensation. Originally intended to apply to situations where the government physically seized private property …

Racism As Subtext: The Contemporary School Desegregation Controversy, Heather Beth Johnson
Senior Scholar Papers
This paper examines the contemporary school desegregation controversy from a sociological perspective. Sheff v. O'Neill, a contemporary school desegregation case, is used as a context in which to study the opposition to racial integration. Through close examination of the arguments people use to frame their resistance, the racist subtext of contemporary school desegregation opposition is exposed. The data for this analysis come from legal briefs, newspaper accounts, and in-depth personal interviews with Connecticut citizens and various key actors in the Sheff case collected between January, 1993 and March, 1994. This paper looks at each of the major arguments people use …

The Contribution Of Meats To Energy And Essential Nutrient Intakes Of Women In The United States, C. Dian Martin
The Contribution Of Meats To Energy And Essential Nutrient Intakes Of Women In The United States, C. Dian Martin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study used the 1987-88 USDA Nationwide Food Consumption Survey to investigate the contribution meat products make to intakes of nutrients at risk of inadequate or excessive consumption by women. The study is unique in that meat nutrients were extracted from mixed dishes, providing a more accurate picture of consumption. Cluster analysis was used to classify nonpregnant, nonlactating women 19 years and older based on their consumption patterns of total meat and individual meats (beef, poultry, processed meats, pork and seafoods) as percent of caloric intake.
Total fat and SFA intakes exceeded National Research Council (NRC) goals regardless of meat …
