Research Brief: "Examining The Lived Experience And Factors Influencing Education Of Two Student Veterans Using Photovoice Methodology", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about how student veterans' military experiences impact their social and higher education experiences. In policy and practice, student veterans should seek help from faculty and staff, and universities should be available to address the needs of student veterans; the VA should increase its partnerships with universities to allow for additional access to resources for student veterans, and policymakers should support universities in creating student veteran centers. Suggestions for future research include expanding the size and diversity of the sample, reducing constraints on participants, and allowing for group-sharing experiences within the study.

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of cost-effective diagnostic strategies to evaluate whether mass drug administration (MDA) programmes to control Schistosoma haematobium progress as anticipated. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-principle for examination of pooled urine samples as a strategy for rapid assessment of presence and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infections at the population level.

METHODS: A total of 640 urine samples were collected from 520 school-aged children (520 at baseline and 120 at follow-up) during a clinical trial that was designed to assess the efficacy of praziquantel against Schistosoma haematobium infections in Ethiopia. Individual and pooled …

Don’T Tell Me What To Do With My Life: How Parental Influence On Career Choice And Autonomy Support Relate To Student Well-Being, Delaney Verger Jan 2015

Don’T Tell Me What To Do With My Life: How Parental Influence On Career Choice And Autonomy Support Relate To Student Well-Being, Delaney Verger

Theses & ETDs

College student’s well-being was predicted to be related to their perceptions of autonomy support from their parents, as well as their perceptions of who selected their career path (themselves versus their parents). Seventy-six college students completed questionnaires assessing their level of parental autonomy support, whether they perceived that they had chosen their own career path or that their parents had chosen their career path, their self-esteem, self-worth, and their subjective well-being. Mother autonomy support was positively correlated with self-esteem and self-worth, whereas father autonomy support was positively correlated with self-esteem and subjective well-being. Perception of a self-chosen career was positively …

Is Who You Want To Be Who You Should Be? A Look At Selfdiscrepancies At The Beginning And End Of College, S. Louise Askew Jan 2015

Is Who You Want To Be Who You Should Be? A Look At Selfdiscrepancies At The Beginning And End Of College, S. Louise Askew

Theses & ETDs

This research was designed to test the hypothesis that college students would align their ought-self (how they think society wants them to be) with their parent/guardians ideal-self (how they think their parent/guardian wants them to be) for the student more when they arrive at college, and less as their college career continued. Sixty-five participants from New College of Florida filled out two surveys to determine their self-discrepancies and quality of the relationship they had with a parent/guardian. Self-discrepancies were introduced as a psychological concept by E. Tory Higgins in 1987. These discrepancies are between how a person wants to be, …

Silence Improves Anxiety Levels And Test Scores Among Children With Disabilities, Hanna Matatyaho Jan 2015

Silence Improves Anxiety Levels And Test Scores Among Children With Disabilities, Hanna Matatyaho

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Students with disabilities may experience more anxiety when taking a test than do students without a disability. The purpose of this study was to assess whether a technique called 1-minute of silence reduces anxiety and improves test scores among students with disabilities. The theoretical framework for this study was the theory of planned behavior/reasoned action and the health belief model. Two research questions were used, one to determine the difference in anxiety levels in students with special needs and the other to determine the difference in New York State (NYS) Math posttest scores in children with special needs (no silence, …

Personality, Coping, And Burnout In Online Doctoral Psychology Students, Michelle Linn Grigsby Jan 2015

Personality, Coping, And Burnout In Online Doctoral Psychology Students, Michelle Linn Grigsby

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Completion times for doctoral psychology students are twice as long as those of other disciplines, and the attrition rate is over half of the matriculated students. Research indicates that (a) burnout plays an integral part in delayed completion and attrition for doctoral students and (b) personality and coping influence the development of burnout. In an effort to support prevention and intervention strategies, this study explored the gap in research regarding moderating effects of coping styles on the relationship between personality traits and burnout levels in online doctoral psychology students, as this population is growing at a significant rate and possesses …

The Relation Between Aggressive Behavior And Engagement In Violence, Andrea Carolina Aya Mercado Jan 2015

The Relation Between Aggressive Behavior And Engagement In Violence, Andrea Carolina Aya Mercado

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Exposure to community violence is positively correlated with aggression towards other people (Allwood & Bell, 2008). Researchers in this area have classified aggression into two broad categories, proactive and reactive aggression. Proactive aggression refers to aggression that is used as an instrument to achieve a goal, whereas reactive aggression refers to aggression that is used as a response to a real or perceived treat (Chaux, Arboleda, & Rincon, 2012). Exposure to community violence impacts both reactive and proactive aggression, but mechanisms explaining this relationship are still unclear. One potential mediator of this relationship is religiosity. Previous research suggests that individuals …

Does Self-Care Moderate The Relation Of Stress To Quality Of Life Of Female Doctoral Students In Professional Psychology?, Erin Elizabeth Ayala Jan 2015

Does Self-Care Moderate The Relation Of Stress To Quality Of Life Of Female Doctoral Students In Professional Psychology?, Erin Elizabeth Ayala

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Increasing numbers of women are pursuing doctoral degrees in psychology, and the stress of being a female doctoral student can create a risk for aversive consequences (e.g., ineffective clinical work, impaired competence). Psychologists lack an understanding of the extent to which women can protect themselves from undue stress in professional psychology programs by engaging in self-care. The lack of a comprehensive framework for this phenomenon calls for the need to apply and test the Health Promotion Model to the experience of women in professional psychology programs. The current investigation assessed the extent to which self-care activities would moderate the negative …

The Effects Of Acculturative Factors And Academic Self-Efficacy On International Students' Psychological Adjustment, Jeremy Bissram Jan 2015

The Effects Of Acculturative Factors And Academic Self-Efficacy On International Students' Psychological Adjustment, Jeremy Bissram

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

International students who come to the United States to attend an educational institution go through a process of adjustment in transitioning to the United States. This study focused on further understanding the factors that influence the psychological adjustment process of international students. Using the sojourner adjustment and self-efficacy literatures (i.e., Bandura, 1977; Church. 1982; Ward & Kennedy, 1999) as guiding frameworks, the current study examined the influence of acculturative factors and academic self-efficacy on international students’ levels of depression and life satisfaction. Acculturative factors included acculturative stress, English language proficiency (ELP), and social support from both home and host country.

Law As An Ally Or Enemy In The War On Cyberbullying: Exploring The Contested Terrain Of Privacy And Other Legal Concepts In The Age Of Technology And Social Media, A. Wayne Mackay

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This article focuses on the role and limits of law as a response to cyberbullying. The problem of cyberbullying engages many of our most fundamental legal concepts and provides an interesting case study. Even when there is general agreement that the problem merits a legal response, there are significant debates about what that response should be. Which level and what branch of government can and should best respond? What is the most appropriate legal process for pursuing cyberbullies—traditional legal avenues or more creative restorative approaches? How should the rights and responsibilities of perpetrators, victims and even bystanders be balanced? Among …

Students with executive function deficits can fall behind academically as well as socially and emotionally, relative to their same-aged peers. Effective interventions for developing executive functions within the school environment are essential for addressing this issue. This study examines changes in students’ executive functions as a result of their participation in a mindfulness training intervention. Participants included four ten-year old elementary school boys who took part in a ten-week mindfulness training intervention. The data were generated through pre and post assessments with an executive function teacher rating scale and a Goal-Attainment …

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Technology is an essential component of learning in the 21st century. College professors and teachers hold many assumptions regarding the technological skills and knowledge that students possess while learning in the college setting. In this article, we explore the technology use and attitudes towards technology held by students enrolled in a regional public university offering online, face-to-face and hybrid instruction. The understanding of students’ attitudes and use of technology is essential to informing the technological direction and pedagogical model in higher education from a traditional, lecture-based model to a technologically-enhanced model. In this study, we employed a mixed-method design using …

Exploration Into Pre-Clinicians' Views Of The Use Of Role-Play Games In Group Therapy With Adolescents, Sarah H. Flashman Jan 2015

Exploration Into Pre-Clinicians' Views Of The Use Of Role-Play Games In Group Therapy With Adolescents, Sarah H. Flashman

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examines pre-clinicians' beliefs and experiences with adolescent group therapy and role-play games (RPGs) as therapeutic group treatment. Twelve pre-clinicians in a community mental health agency were asked about their thoughts and experiences of group therapy and the use of RPGs in adolescent group therapy. The larger themes found in this study were participants' experiences with group therapy, use of group therapy, and RPGs in adolescent group therapy. These results indicate that pre-clinicians rely heavily on experience, rather than research, when making clinical decisions. Furthermore, this study shows that pre-clinicians have little knowledge about RPGs, but view them …
