Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Related To Emergency Contraception Among College Students, Sarah Donohue May 2015

Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Related To Emergency Contraception Among College Students, Sarah Donohue

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer.

The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC.

Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding …

A Randomized Controlled Trial Of Koru: A Mindfulness Program For College Students And Other Emerging Adults., Jeffrey M Greeson, Michael K Juberg, Margaret Maytan, Kiera James, Holly Rogers

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Koru, a mindfulness training program for college students and other emerging adults.

PARTICIPANTS: Ninety students (66% female, 62% white, 71% graduate students) participated between Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.

METHODS: Randomized controlled trial. It was hypothesized that Koru, compared with a wait-list control group, would reduce perceived stress and sleep problems, and increase mindfulness, self-compassion, and gratitude.

RESULTS: As hypothesized, results showed significant Group (Koru, Wait-List)×Time (Pre, Post) interactions for improvements in perceived stress (F[1, 76.40]=4.50, p=.037, d=.45), sleep problems (F [1, 79.49]=4.71, p=.033, d=.52), mindfulness (F [1, 79.09]=26.80, p

Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock Apr 2015

Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

This study attempts to gain a better understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions of conversations about gender and race in the classroom. Specifically, this study focuses on issues and concerns that arise in the course of talking about gender and race. There were over 20 hours of classes observed, eight one-on-one in-depth interviews, and over three hours of recorded classroom conversations. Through my analysis, I found that students used several devices, including storytelling and attacking, to speak about these taboo issues within the classroom.

Preempting Performance Challenges: The Effects Of Inoculation Messaging On Attacks To Task Self-Efficacy, Ben Jackson, Josh Compton, Ryan Whiddett, David R. Anthony, James A. Dimmock

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although inoculation messages have been shown to be effective for inducing resistance to counter-attitudinal attacks, researchers have devoted relatively little attention toward studying the way in which inoculation theory principles might support challenges to psychological phenomena other than attitudes (e.g., self-efficacy). Prior to completing a physical (i.e., balance) task, undergraduates (N = 127, Mage = 19.20, SD = 2.16) were randomly assigned to receive either a control or inoculation message, and reported their confidence in their ability regarding the upcoming task. During the task, a confederate provided standardized negative feedback to all participants regarding their performance, and following …

Reckless Abandonment? Explaining Congressional Hispanic Caucus Support For The 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, Elizabeth C. Reynolds Apr 2015

Reckless Abandonment? Explaining Congressional Hispanic Caucus Support For The 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, Elizabeth C. Reynolds

Politics Honors Papers

When No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was signed into law in early 2002, many hoped the legislation would help reduce achievement gaps among traditionally underperforming populations. For Hispanic students specifically, however, NCLB has contributed to educational inequality, school segregation, and high drop-out rates in major ways. Given these outcomes and trends, it is surprising that members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and other Hispanic American interest groups overwhelmingly supported NCLB despite potentially being able to anticipate how the law would hurt Hispanic students. The political environment of 2001 left members of the CHC with few options other than to …

Southern Baptist Leader Offers Mental Health Hope During Visit To Gardner-Webb University, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

After Gardner-Webb University alumnus Dr. Frank Page lost his daughter to suicide, he discovered a calling to help save others who are battling mental health illnesses. Page, now president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) executive committee, visited Gardner-Webb on March 17 to encourage students, local ministers and community members who are dealing with their own psychological challenges and the trials of others. When his daughter, Melissa, took her own life in 2009, Page faced the immense grief that suicides cause for thousands of American families, marriages, churches and friends each year.

Underlying Construct Of Empathy, Optimism, And Burnout In Medical Students., Mohammadreza Hojat, Michael Vergare, Gerald A. Isenberg, Mitchell Cohen, John Spandorfer

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the underlying construct of measures of empathy, optimism, and burnout in medical students.

METHODS: Three instruments for measuring empathy (Jefferson Scale of Empathy, JSE); Optimism (the Life Orientation Test-Revised, LOT-R); and burnout (the Maslach Burnout Inventory, MBI, which includes three scales of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment) were administered to 265 third-year students at Sidney Kimmel (formerly Jefferson) Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Data were subjected to factor analysis to examine relationships among measures of empathy, optimism, and burnout in a multivariate statistical model.

RESULTS: Factor analysis (principal component with oblique …
