Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell May 1969

Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comparative index to digestible nutrients was established for Russian wildrye, crested wheatgrass, and intermediate wheatgrass seeded on foothill areas of Utah. The nutritive values of these grasses were compared by the lignin ratio method, the chlorophyllan ratio method, and the in vivo rumen bag process.

Average digestion coefficients computed by the lignin ratio method for dry matter, ether extract, cellulose, and gross energy were highest for intermediate wheatgrass. Protein was more digestible for Russian wildrye. Digestible energy was adequate in all species to meet requirements for late lactation.

Results from the chlorophyllan ratio method were excessively high and were …

Symposium On Livestock Problems, John C. Macfarlane, F. J. Mulhern Jan 1969

Symposium On Livestock Problems, John C. Macfarlane, F. J. Mulhern

Agribusiness Collection

Part 1 - John C. Macfarlane

Livestock, animals raised in confinement, animals in large numbers shipped to other countries, and, of course, those cattle, calves, sheep, swine, goats, poultry and horses raised for the purpose of supplying meat for human and animal consumption will present problems that will increase in importance as long as they exist.

Humane problems involving livestock are a hundred times more important and much more complex today than they were a hundred years ago. What can societies do to prevent or reduce this reservoir of potential cruelty? I think we can do many things.

Part 2 …

Range Nutrition In An Arid Region, Lorin E. Harris Jan 1968

Range Nutrition In An Arid Region, Lorin E. Harris

Faculty Honor Lectures

On the mountains, in the valleys, on the foothills and on the deserts of the Intermountain West grow millions of tons of vegetation. The chemical energy stored bv these plants is a potential source of useful energy for man. Some of the plant material has been used for fuel, other has been used as a source of lumber, chemicals, and paper, but the major part of this vast reservO'ir is useful to man because it is utilized by livestock. This native vegetation is grazed by livestock and they convert the plant energy to' high quality, desirable food energy for man.

Nutrition As An Index To Relative Economic Development, Kenneth E. Rosing Jan 1964

Nutrition As An Index To Relative Economic Development, Kenneth E. Rosing

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Investigation of nutrition as a reliable measure of relative economic development. Fourteen specific indices were grouped and combined to make six general indices. Subjected to the Kendall test of concordance, they were found to measure the same basic phenomenon that, on examination, appeared to be symptomatic of economic development and, therefore, reliably combined into a single index. A nutrition index was then compiled for specific countries in terms of gross calories per capita per day and adjusted to age structure, climate ami .quality of diet. All countries for which information was available were ranked by this nutritional index and tested …

The Relationship Of Citrus By-Products To The Cattle Industry In Florida, Roland Lloyd Dewing Jul 1963

The Relationship Of Citrus By-Products To The Cattle Industry In Florida, Roland Lloyd Dewing

Graduate Student Research Papers

For many years Florida has led the United States in citrus production and since 1946 has been the source of great quantities of citrus wastes as a result of the production of frozen citrus concentrates. Conversion of these wastes into feed for the rapidly growing cattle industry has provided an effective and profitable way to dispose of these wastes. Since Florida does not produce large amounts of grain or other feed concentrates, the development of citrus feeds has been fortunate both for the citrus and cattle industries in the state. The situation is so fortunate that authoritative sources have maintained …

The Effect Of Range Condition Upon The Production, Nutritive Intake And Digestibility Of Desert Range Forage In Southwestern Utah, J. Kent Taylor May 1962

The Effect Of Range Condition Upon The Production, Nutritive Intake And Digestibility Of Desert Range Forage In Southwestern Utah, J. Kent Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The 65 million acres of winter range in the Intermountain region furnish forage for about five million sheep and four million cattle each winter for approximately six months. These arid ranges are well suited for winter grazing, and are of paramount importance to the livestock industry. Many of these ranges were fully stocked by 1900 and as livestock continued to increase, many winter ranges were seriously over-grazed (Hutchings and Stewart, 1953). Today many of these ranges remain in a deteriorated condition. Forage production has decreased and desirable plants have been replaced by less desirable species.

Little is known about the …
