Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter May 1974

Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sheep with esophageal fistulas were used to determine the daily intake, nutritive content and digestibility of forage at three periods and two stocking intensities during the spring of 1972 on a typical foothill range in northern Utah.

Heavy grazing under a season-long regime did not influence the concentrations of dietary chemical components when compared to moderate grazing; however, it did depress the digestibility of cellulose and organic matter. There was a significant decline in the dietary chemical components due to forage maturation. Digestibility of organic matter and cellulose were significantly higher in the early spring as compared to late spring. …

G74-117 Alfalfa In Swine Diets (Revised November 1988), Duane Reese, D. Murray Danielson Jan 1974

G74-117 Alfalfa In Swine Diets (Revised November 1988), Duane Reese, D. Murray Danielson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Nebraska ranks first in dehydrated alfalfa meal and seventh in alfalfa hay production in the United States, with production in all counties of the state. With this availability of alfalfa, its use in swine diets should be considered.

The performance and economic considerations of alfalfa in swine diets are detailed here, and information on mixing diets is provided.

G74-149 Bloat Prevention And Treatment (Revised July 1996), Dale Grotelueschen, Richard J. Rasby, Don Hudson, Bruce Anderson Jan 1974

G74-149 Bloat Prevention And Treatment (Revised July 1996), Dale Grotelueschen, Richard J. Rasby, Don Hudson, Bruce Anderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Bloat is a form of indigestion marked by an excessive accumulation of gas in the rumen. Immediately after cattle consume a meal, the digestive process creates gases in the rumen. Most of the gases are eliminated by eructation (belching). Any interruption of this normal gas elimination results in gas accumulation or bloat.

This NebGuide discusses the types of bloat which may occur in cattle and methods to prevent and treat bloat.

G74-125 Oats In Swine Diets (Revised December 1981), Ernest R. Peo, Donald B. Hudman, Mike Brumm Jan 1974

G74-125 Oats In Swine Diets (Revised December 1981), Ernest R. Peo, Donald B. Hudman, Mike Brumm

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Oats are not considered a standard feed grain in swine diets in Nebraska because of the small acreage planted. However, oats can be used by all ages of swine with some limitations. The feeding value of oats is 80 percent that of corn. With proper formulation, limiting the amount of oats in diets will cause no reduction in swine performance. The nutritive content of a feed grain is the primary factor in determining its use. This NebGuide discusses the processing of oats for swine diets, gestation diets, lactating diets, starter diets, and growing-finishing diet.

G74-166 Creep Feeding Beef Calves, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush, James A. Gosey Jan 1974

G74-166 Creep Feeding Beef Calves, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush, James A. Gosey

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Effects of creep feeding calves are covered here. Gross income of the cow/calf enterprise is partially dependent on weaning weight of the calves. Three possible non-genetic ways of increasing calf weaning weight are to increase milk production of the dam, increase forage consumption of the calf, or provide supplemental feed to the calf to increase nutrient intake. Management practices exist to increase standing forage quality, but management of that grass for the calf only is difficult. Likewise, increasing milk production of the dam requires greater feed inputs and possibly supplemental feed. Creep feeding studies consistently have shown an increase in …

G74-170 Nitrates In Livestock Feeding, Richard J. Rasby, Rick Stock, Bruce Anderson, Norman R. Schneider Jan 1974

G74-170 Nitrates In Livestock Feeding, Richard J. Rasby, Rick Stock, Bruce Anderson, Norman R. Schneider

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of nitrate poisoning in livestock.

Nitrate poisoning in cattle occurred long before the use of nitrogen fertilizers. In the late 1800s there were reports of cornstalk poisoning in Nebraska, and nitrate poisoning from oat hay in North and South Dakota and from weeds in the high-organic matter soils in Florida and Wisconsin.

Nitrate concentrations in feeds for livestock depends more on plant species and environmental conditions prior to harvest than on the amount of available nitrogen in the soil.

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

Amino And Amide Nitrogen Content Of The Potato, Solanum Tuberosum, And Its Relation To A Shoot Inhibition Phenomenon, Deborah Donoghue Mccown May 1973

Amino And Amide Nitrogen Content Of The Potato, Solanum Tuberosum, And Its Relation To A Shoot Inhibition Phenomenon, Deborah Donoghue Mccown

Agriculture and Horticulture

Solarium tuberosum L. plants grown in non-nutritive media exhibit a shoot inhibition in light which follows normal tuber dormancy. Shoot inhibition is expressed as retardation of leaf development. Physiological age, injury, and nitrate fertilization appeared to be factors in overcoming the inhibition. Studies included comparison of inhibited and non-inhibited shoots fertilized with nitrate and ammonium N sources and analysis of amino-N and amide-N concentrations. Nitrate fertilization produced normal plants. Ammonium fertilized plants remained inhibited, although it was apparent that ammonium was absorbed. Estimates of concentrations of amino-N and amide-N indicated that while nitrate fertilization produced morphologically normal plants, plant nitrogen …

Nutritional Components Of The Standing Plankton Crop In Mississippi Sound, Mohammed Saeed Mulkana, Walter Abbott Jan 1973

Nutritional Components Of The Standing Plankton Crop In Mississippi Sound, Mohammed Saeed Mulkana, Walter Abbott

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A study on seasonal changes in the nutritional components of standing plankton biomass was made from 20 April 1965 to 6 September 1966. Plankton were separated into net plankton and nannoplankton fractions. Nannoplankton3 standing biomass exceeded by 72 times that of net plankton.

Although protein and carbohydrate levels were higher in net plankton on a unit weight basis, total nutrients available from nannoplankton were substantially higher. Some seasonal trends were apparent as changes in the standing biomass in net plankton. Nannoplankton exhibited no seasonal trends. Lipid and caloric values of net plankton showed seasonal trends similar to those shown by …

Uptake And Distribution Of Mineral Elements By Burley 21 Tobacco As Influenced By Nitrogen Nutrition And Suckering Practice, J. L. Sims, W. O. Atkinson Aug 1971

Uptake And Distribution Of Mineral Elements By Burley 21 Tobacco As Influenced By Nitrogen Nutrition And Suckering Practice, J. L. Sims, W. O. Atkinson

Agronomy Notes

Knowledge of nutrient content of tobacco and of removal of nutrients from soil is essential to developing sound fertilization practices for tobacco. Quantities of nutrient elements taken·up by tobacco vary widely. This is because of variations in variety, soil fertility level, fertilizer application, soil moisture, plant population, and other environmental and cultural factors . We conducted the present study to determine the effects of applied N and suckering practice on the content of mineral elements in certain plant parts of burley tobacco.

Doctoral Theses

Tongue pigmentation in man:The 'partioular' type of dark apots and patohes on the surface of the tongue, as investigated in the prosent thesis, wae first not ioed in human populations by Davis [5], who called it 'tongue piementation'. It is to be emphasized that not all colour piements come under this 'particular' type. There are some pathological conditione giving rise to transient discolouration of the tongue. This aspeot will be disouesed a little later. Such tongue pigmentation does not seem to have been reported for any population, human or otherwise.Tongue pigmentation be usually found on the upper surface or borders …

Yield And Value Of Burley 21 Tobacco As Influenced By Nitrogen Nutrition, Suckering Practice, And Harvest Date, J. L. Sims, W. O. Atkinson

Agronomy Notes

An experiment was conducted in the field during 1966 on Maury silt loam soil to obtain information of the effects of agronomic factors on yield and value of Burley 21 tobacco . Ammonium nitrate fertilizer at varying rates, and concentrated super-phosphate and potassium sulfate at constant rates , were broadcast and disked in after plowing and before transplanting. All plots received irrigation water (sprinkler system) to supplement rainfall when soil moisture dropped below 60% of available moisture-holding capacity. Sucker control practices utilized were (a) no topping - no suckering, (b) topping - no suckering, (c) topping - hand suckering, and …

Rearing Orphan Kangaroos, G L. Ward

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LICENCES are required in Western Australia if certain kangaroos and all species of wallabies are kept in captivity, but orphaned young joeys often need care and hand feeding before they can be released to fend for themselves.
