The Care Of The Breeding Sow, P C. Beck Jan 1960

The Care Of The Breeding Sow, P C. Beck

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PIG-RAISING is a specialised field of animal production, which, to be profitable must incorporate both a scientific and a practical approach.

These two factors must be complementary, for without a sound practical approach, the value of the scientific principles involved, e.g., in breeding and compounding rations would accordingly be reduced.

Copper Poisoning In Sheep, H. W. Bennetts Jan 1959

Copper Poisoning In Sheep, H. W. Bennetts

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

ANIMALS must have small amounts of copper for a number of normal bodily functions, including growth and blood formation and, in the sheep, wool quality. The liver is used as a "bank" or store-house for copper which is collected from the diet and in due course issued to the body tissues as required. The sheep—in contrast to other species of animals—is apt to play the miser and hoard unnecessary amounts.

The Comparative Mineral Requirements Of Pioneer And Climax Range Grasses, Paul L. Steele

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made to determine the effects of variable levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium upon several species of pioneer and climax range grasses, and to determine if these grasses differ in their ability to grow when supplied with low levels of these nutrients. Five grasses were used. The climax grasses were Agropyron spicatum and Agropryon smithii, and the pioneer grasses were Aristida longiseta, Sporobous cryptandrus, and Oryzopsis hymenoides.

Profitable Pig-Feeding - The Importance Of Protien., K. M. Hope May 1958

Profitable Pig-Feeding - The Importance Of Protien., K. M. Hope

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The food consumed by pigs during their transition from weaners to marketable porkers or baconers is the biggest single item on the pig-raiser's list of costs, so it naturally follows that if we can reduce food costs while still maintaining carcass weight and quality there will be bigger margins of profit when the pigs are sold.

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook Dec 1956

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook

Faculty Honor Lectures

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

Before 19'00 most of the animals in the West grazed on the range all year. However, irrigation crop production has expanded …

Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Different Osmotic Concentrations Of Calcium Chloride And Sodium Chloride In The Substrate, Mumtaz Ali Khan May 1956

Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Different Osmotic Concentrations Of Calcium Chloride And Sodium Chloride In The Substrate, Mumtaz Ali Khan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Considerable experimental evidence supports the concept that the growth of plants generally decreases progressively as the salt concentration of the substrate increases, but certain relationships between plant and substrate are still not fully understood. The chemistry of salt toxicity to plants involves many interactions both as to the quantity and kind of ions presented to the roots and those accumulated in the plants. Many plant species have shown sensitivity to excess accumulation of specific salts frequently encountered in saline soils. Thus Eaton (1942), Wadleigh, Hayward, and Ayers (1951) have shown most of the fruit trees to be susceptible to injury …

Better Agriculture Through Research In South Dakota, 1887-1956, I. B. Johnson Apr 1956

Better Agriculture Through Research In South Dakota, 1887-1956, I. B. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Agricultural research in South Dakota has progressed with the state. In fact, the early experimental work was begun even before South Dakota was admitted to statehood. Federal funds to establish experimental work in the Dakota Territory were made available under the Hatch Act in 1887. Accordingly, the following year the first main experiment station was established in South Dakota State College, Brookings. There were five departments at the start – agriculture, botany-horticulture and forestry, chemistry, entomology, and veterinary science. Each department employed by one scientist. The Farm Breakfast, H M. Gloster May 1952

The Farm Breakfast, H M. Gloster

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Most modern farmers go to considerable trouble to ascertain the dietary requirements of the livestock on their farms and try to provide the recommended quantities of each nutrient as set down by skilled advisers on animal nutrition. They carefully study each animal, and on the slightest sign of loss of condition, immediately seek expert advice and lose no time in remedying any deficiencies in the diet.

A Study Of Nutrition As A Mass Educational Movement During World War Ii : With Particular Reference To The Work Done In San Joaquin County, Maxine V. Garrigan

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the decade, 1930-1940, most of the government efforts were directed to the task of seeing that no one should starve. Through welfare programs it was possible to insure low income groups against starvation; "but through the depression years and the poet-depression months, it was recognized that just the guarantee against starvation was not enough. Our nutritional goal should be commensurate with natural resources of our country and with our ability to produce, have the land, the equipment and the man power necessary to furnish good food for our whole nation. Knowing this and recognizing from surveys that a large …

Nutrition, Environmental Conditions, And Growth Of Marine Bivalve Mollusks, Wesley R. Coe Jan 1948

Nutrition, Environmental Conditions, And Growth Of Marine Bivalve Mollusks, Wesley R. Coe

Journal of Marine Research

Recent investigations on the nutrition of the ciliary-feeding bivalves indicate that, although many varieties of organic and inorganic substances are ingested, most of the actual food is assimilated by the intracellular digestion of very small cells and particles. This is accomplished mainly by the phagocytic cells of the digestive organ (digestive diverticula, or "liver"), but it is aided to a small extent by migratory phagocytic cells in the lumen of the alimentary canal....
