Linguistic Legislation And Transnational Commercial Activity: France & Belgium, Thomas E. Carbonneau Jan 1981

Linguistic Legislation And Transnational Commercial Activity: France & Belgium, Thomas E. Carbonneau

Faculty Scholarship

For French and francophonic people, the continued vitality of their linguistic heritage is an integral part of their sense of national identity and cultural cohesiveness. The truth of this statement has been corroborated recently by legislative enactments in France and in Belgium which prescribe and/or recommend the use of French in certain private commercial and governmental activity taking place within these countries. This legislation represents an attempt to provide a partial remedy to what has been perceived generally as the syntactical and lexical "contamination" of the French language resulting from the dominance of English or, more precisely, American English, in …

A Grammar Of Two Pacoh Texts, Richard Leon Watson Dec 1980

A Grammar Of Two Pacoh Texts, Richard Leon Watson

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The goals of this grammar are threefold: first to learn more about the Pacoh language of Viet Nam and leave a record of the results for future students of Pacoh; second, to learn more about discourse structure, and third, to learn more about deep grammar and its correlations with surface grammar. The method followed emphasizes a particular discourse approach and a particular deep and surface grammar approach. The discourse approach calls for a thorough analysis of two expository texts, resulting in individual text grammars. These are next compared and contrasted with each other. Then they are compared and contrasted with …

Black English And Equal Educational Opportunity, Michigan Law Review Dec 1980

Black English And Equal Educational Opportunity, Michigan Law Review

Michigan Law Review

There is a danger that the King case will be misunderstood. The press has sometimes portrayed it as a vindication of the right to use black English in the classroom rather than of the educational opportunities of the children who speak it, and the King opinion itself is at times confusing. This Note clarifies the meaning of King and section 1703(f) by examining four critical steps in Judge Joiner's reasoning. Section I examines the court's holding that "language barriers" under section l 703(f) include impediments to equal educational opportunity arising from dialect differences, and concludes that although the court's argument …

The Interrelationship Of Cultural Information, Linguistic Structure, And Symbolic Representations In A Halbi Myth, Frances Margaret Woods Jul 1980

The Interrelationship Of Cultural Information, Linguistic Structure, And Symbolic Representations In A Halbi Myth, Frances Margaret Woods

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The mythology of the Halbi people reveals and reflects their cognitive orientation (and, in the process, validates their cultural values). The Halbis' myths are expressed through the linguistic form of narrative discourse but mere analysis of the form of the discourse provides only a fragmentary understanding of the content. As a result, linguistic analysis is only part of discourse analysis. Discourse analysis also calls for an analysis of the cultural setting and of the dynamic interplay between the culture and language in terms of the message (or meaning) of a given myth within a given culture. This study represents an …

Pragmatic Aspects Of English Text Structure, Larry Bert Jones May 1980

Pragmatic Aspects Of English Text Structure, Larry Bert Jones

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study is an integration of two frequently independent fields of inquiry in linguistics, text analysis and pragmatics. It brings together the focus in text analysis on the structural and cohesive aspects of monolog discourses, with the focus in pragmatics on the relations between individual sentences and the communicative context in which they are uttered. The perspectives of text analysis and pragmatics are linked in an examination of the relations between the structure of written English texts and one aspect of the communicative context: an author's assumptions about the knowledge of his reader. This study makes five major contributions to …

Application Of A Cognitive Model Of Linguistic Structure To The Analysis Of Selected Problems In Tzeltal (Mayan) Grammar, Stephen Leslie Walter May 1980

Application Of A Cognitive Model Of Linguistic Structure To The Analysis Of Selected Problems In Tzeltal (Mayan) Grammar, Stephen Leslie Walter

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Underlying the dominant theory of language today is the assumption that language is innate to homo sapiens. Theoretical and analytic work at all levels of linguistic inquiry are predicated upon this assumption. The present study questions this assumption arguing instead that what is innate is a limited set of cognitive structures which interface man and his environment. It is suggested that man is heavily dependent upon these cognitive structures for knowledge about the external world. Further, it is assumed that language is a behavior by which man communicates to others a portion of what he has learned about his world …

2. Writing: How And Why (Instructional Manual To Accompany Suki, Matthew Lipman, Ann Margaret Sharp

Secondary School Curriculum

The aim of this program is to engage students in philosophical inquiry into aesthetics and related philosophical issues. The instructional manual includes short, accessible explanations of the philosophical concepts found in SUKI, the novel, as well as hundreds of exercises and discussion plans to prompt and assist the student's inquiry. As poetry is the primary aesthetic genre taken up in the novel, the explanations and activities in this manual offer numerous additional poems as objects of aesthetic inquiry. The manual also includes numerous activities that invite students to transform their thinking and dialogue into essays, poems and short stories, so …

English Word-Making, Richard Henry Lederer Jan 1980

English Word-Making, Richard Henry Lederer

Doctoral Dissertations

English Word-Making presents the content and methods of modern research in morphology in the form of a textbook for secondary school English students.

The opening section offers a rationale for the uses of morphology at the secondary level. The emergence of English as a subject in the curriculum is traced historically; and the study of morphology is related specifically to humanistic goals and to the enhancing of skills in language analysis, speaking, reading, vocabulary growth, grammar and usage study, spelling, composition, and literary interpretation.

The main body of the text consists of ten chapters, each exploring, diachronically and synchronically, a …

The Need For Clear Structure In 'Plain Language' Legal Drafting, Layman E. Allen, C. Rudy Engholm Jan 1980

The Need For Clear Structure In 'Plain Language' Legal Drafting, Layman E. Allen, C. Rudy Engholm

Articles

Language is not simple. To pretend otherwise is to mislead. In practice the aspect that is handled most ineptly in written legal materials is the structure. The focus of this article is upon structure and how to improve it. At the outset, let one thing be absolutely clear. In seeking to achieve clarity of expression, those who have no more to recommend than short sentences, simple words, and readability formulas are offering a cracker in circumstances where a full gourmet feast is gleaming in the chef's eye for those with the wit but to ask for the menu. To practice …

Pincher Martin': Symbolism Serving Fable., Dianne Lucille Braley Runion Jan 1980

Pincher Martin': Symbolism Serving Fable., Dianne Lucille Braley Runion

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All three of Golding’s first novels make dark comment on what they show, but of the treem Pincher Martin, ostensibly the darkest, offers the most hope. Although “the protagonist’s particular history of guilt and greed is intended to stand as a fable for contemporary man,” man (and Pincher) could choose not to turn away from God. That choice, however, demands faith or vision. If, as Baker points out, “the final chapters intentionally contradict the reality shown in the narrative - and thus expose the fallibility of the rational point of view,” they also morally direct the reader’s vision, helping him …

Pound's Use Of Merlin As Persona In The 'Rock Drill Cantos', Caryl J. North Jan 1980

Pound's Use Of Merlin As Persona In The 'Rock Drill Cantos', Caryl J. North

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Ezra Pound wrote Cantos 85 to 95, Section: Rock Drill, while imprisoned in St. Elizabeth’s, a mental hospital in Washington, D.C. This section was first published in 1956, to be followed by the final Cantos (95-109) in 1958. The source for the title Rock Drill was an abstract sculpture cast in gunmetal by Sir Jacob Epstein as part of the Vorticist exhibition of 1915. In Pound’s eyes, this sculpture provided “a central metaphor,... [signifying] his own constant effort to drive home the ideas upon which the right kind of society rests.” In fact, Wyndham Lewis wrote a review of Pound’s …

The Language Of 5 1/2-Year-Old Children From Homes Where Macedonian, Vietnamese And An Aboriginal Tribal Language Are Used As The Language Of The Home, A. L. Mcgregor

Research outputs pre 2011

Throughout the world migration patterns and changing attitudes towards education and other cultures have led over the past three or four decades to a remarkable growth in the learning of second or foreign languages. Within this area the learning of English by speakers of other languages takes up the largest numbers and is to be found in every part of the globe.

Nevertheless to date comparatively little is known of processes and patterns in second language development. Evidence on phonological and semantic development is exceedingly skimpy. Hernandez (in Ervin-Tripp 1970), Malmberg (1945), Wode (1976) and Ervin-Tripp (1974) have examined the …

A Training Program For Use With Aides And Volunteers In A Middle School Remedial Reading And Language Arts Program, Jeanette Johnson

All Graduate Projects

This project consists of three parts. Chapter 1 establishes the need for more concentrated teaching of poor readers among school children and suggests volunteer tutors as a possible source of help. Chapter 2 examines the history of tutoring by non-professionals and concludes that volunteers can indeed be effective tutors, but that appropriate training is a crucial factor. Chapter 3, the main part of the project, presents a set of ten training modules each consisting of taped instructions and accompanying printed material. The script for each tape is included in this paper.

The Development Of English As A Second Language In Aboriginal And Migrant Children : A Pilot Study, A. L. Mcgregor Jan 1978

The Development Of English As A Second Language In Aboriginal And Migrant Children : A Pilot Study, A. L. Mcgregor

Research outputs pre 2011

Research programs developed in Queensland under the Van Leer Foundation Project and the Mount Gravatt Teachers College Language Research Project have yielded practicable approaches for the gathering and analysis of speech data from children of various age groups. On the basis of this research it has been possible to study patterns of language development in first language and to develop appropriate literacy materials for children at various levels of primary education. To date comparatively little is known about patterns of second language development. The question as to whether structures develop in the same sequence and at the same rates as …

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque Jan 1978

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

May Swenson's poetry contains four major image patterns: (1) sexual/sensual, (2) birth, (3) plant and (4) animal. These patterns work together to support a single unifying theme in Swenson's work: respect for all forms of life and for the natural world. This thesis devotes one chapter to each specific pattern. Chapter two analyzes sexual/sensual imagery which emphasizes the need for mutual respect in sexual relationships as well as for respect for the natural environment. This pattern is divided into three subcategories: (1) sexual/sensual imagery supporting themes dealing specifically with sexual roles and relationships, (2) sexual/sensual imagery celebrating the sexuality of …

The Functions Of Reported Speech In Discourse, Mildred Lucille Larson Dec 1977

The Functions Of Reported Speech In Discourse, Mildred Lucille Larson

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The study of the functions of reported speech makes five major contributions to the current literature on discourse. (l) It highlights the multifunctional characteristics of reported speech; (2) it correlates these functions with discourse types; (3) it points out the necessity to separate the situational features from the deep structure organizational features and relates both to surface structure discourse types; (4) it defines more clearly the nature of dialogue discourse, that of a portmanteau realization of deep structure narrative and repartee; and (5) it shows for the first time within the stratificational grammar framework that contrastive discourse structures occur both …

Features Of Serbo-Croatian For Language Teachers, Eric G. Vaszolyi Jan 1977

Features Of Serbo-Croatian For Language Teachers, Eric G. Vaszolyi

Research outputs pre 2011

Teachers of migrant children experience a great many difficulties in trying to understand and resolve their pupils' language problems. One basic problem is all too familiar: the teacher speaks English and the migrant child does not understand it or only understands it to some, rather limited, extent. Another problem area: the pupil picks up some English in the classroom, on the playground and out in the street but speaks it with a peculiar accent and peppers it with phonemic, grammatical and semantic errors. The child's deviations from the generally accepted patterns of English (i.e. the prevalent variety of English spoken …

Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.) Jan 1977

Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Effective communication must be an essential feature of any teaching/ .learning situation and it follows that considerable difficulties arise when teacher and learner speak different and mutually unintelligible languages or dialects. This, unfortunately, is the situation in which many, if not most, Aboriginal children and their teachers throughout Australia find themselves. This classroom situation reflects, of course, the difficulties and frustrations experienced on a wider scale by many Aboriginal parents and Aboriginal communities, and those outsiders who work with them. The problem is compounded further by the fact that few teachers or others who work in Aboriginal areas are given …

Our Multicultural Future And The School, John Sherwood (Ed.) Jan 1977

Our Multicultural Future And The School, John Sherwood (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

It is only in the last four or five years that an observable effort has been made to extend the growing awareness within the community that Australia's population is clearly multicultural in composition. Despite this, most of the political, economic and social structures and organisations in the community do not adequately reflect or cater for the variety of people of different ethnic origins and identities.

While this increasing awareness in individuals is encouraging, it has been evident that the focus of discussions, conferences and gatherings to date, in Western Australia at least, has been rather narrow. Some have concentrated on …
