The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards May 1976

The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The American Indian has functioned metaphorically in American literature at least since his characterization as an agent of Satan in the captivity narratives of the 17th century. From then until now, the Indian has tended to represent either the noble savage of the primitive heathen. Moreover, literary criticism dealing with these images has shown a primary interest in the historical accuracy and fairness of portrayal of the Indian and his way of life. That is to say, relatively little critical attention has dealt with the Indian as metaphor, examining how the Indian functions figuratively in the literature. Two excellent studies …

The Genesis And Development Of "Parker's Back", Kara Pratt Brewer Jan 1976

The Genesis And Development Of "Parker's Back", Kara Pratt Brewer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

”Parker’s Back” is the last short story Flannery O'Connor wrote before the ravaging disease Lupus took her life in August of 1964. When Caroline Gordon visited her “in a hospital a few weeks before her death,” she spoke of her concern about finishing it. “She told me that the doctor had forbidden her to do any work. He said that it was all right to write a little friction, though, she added with a grin and drew a notebook from under her pillow. She kept it there she told me and was trying to finish a story which she hoped …

Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant Aug 1975

Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant

MSN Research Projects

According to Lee (1971), during the past years, most research in the areas of language development has been concerned with the study of normal children. Nation (1972) reported that educators, speech pathol ogists, linguists, psychologists, and others have analyzed the structure of language, the development of language and the functions of language in human behavior. In the past, according to Nation, each discipline has tended to move in a particular direction without becoming aware of the research being done in other disciplines. Presently an increasing number of psycholinguists have been making use of the information from other disciplines, thus providing …

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner Jan 1975

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the past five years, the literary critics have discovered William Blake, helping readers to understand clearly the various stages of development and the final form of the poet's entire mythology. And recent criticism has also clarified and expressed more systematically than earlier criticism certain features of Blake's total thought. Nevertheless, much recent criticism has hindered rather than helped the serious student of Blake's poetry.] Most critics treat Blake's poems as if they were only literary, completely avoiding discussion of their visual components. Yet, Blake clearly envisioned and intended that his reader view the poetry as a new form consisting …

Judicial Reasoning And Social Change, David A. Dittfurth Jan 1975

Judicial Reasoning And Social Change, David A. Dittfurth

Faculty Articles

Some have begun to doubt whether courts adequately respond to recent social problems. Formulated rules, principles, and statutes govern a case in court, and these commanding communications addressed to judges theoretically guide and control the decision-making process. Rules, although often imprecise, are subjected to the scrutiny of the legal profession, which is trained to interpret their meaning and possible application in different fact situations. This, in turn, promotes a high degree of social and political stability since there is less ambiguity as to what constitutes permissible or required behavior.

Attitudes, social institutions, language, and critical decision making are all factors …

Thoreau's Civil Disobedience: A Reassessment, Thomas Aquinas Murawski Jan 1975

Thoreau's Civil Disobedience: A Reassessment, Thomas Aquinas Murawski

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Thoreau’s case is easy in one sense and difficult in another. One of the chief attractions of Civil Disobedience, and one of its necessary limitations, lies in its prophetic quality. Recent American history has confirmed Thoreau’s good judgment in abhorring state-supported racism and a questionable war. But in sympathizing with his outrage over these conditions, we are spared the difficult test to our forbearance that arises when others dissent against issues that lack the persuasive moral justification of Thoreau’s case. So in this respect at least, Thoreau presents a comparatively easy case. His case is difficult in that he minimizes …

"Beowulf Maþelode....": Text Linguistics And Speech Acts, Charles E. Mcnally Jan 1975

"Beowulf Maþelode....": Text Linguistics And Speech Acts, Charles E. Mcnally

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

During the long course of Beowulf criticism many special studies of the epic have been made: for example, the ‘digressions,’ the meter and rhythm, the historical background, and more recently the alleged oral-formulaic origins of the poem. But one subject of some significance appears to have escaped the focus of special attention, that is, the words of the main character himself. The present paper is devoted to such a study of the first person speeches of Beowulf.

In this study many interesting and important questions that could be asked about these speeches will not be treated. Such matters, for example, …

Queries 'N Theories: An Instructional Game On The Dot, Dot, Dot... Approach To Scientific Method, Layman E. Allen Jan 1974

Queries 'N Theories: An Instructional Game On The Dot, Dot, Dot... Approach To Scientific Method, Layman E. Allen

Articles

QUERIES 'N THEORIES provides a parallel to the strong inference approach to scientific method - designing experiments, observing data, and theorizing. The reiter- ated use of the DOT approach (Design, Observe, Theorize) in the problem-solving required by the game mirrors the regular, systematic application of strong inference in some areas of science (e.g., high energy physics and molecular biology) that have moved ahead much more rapidly than others. Moreover, the game embodies and provides practice in two aspects of scientific theorizing and designing which John Platt has pointed out as central to scientific advance: (1) the usefulness of multiple hypotheses …

The Effectiveness Of A Gestural Cue Language Program For Children With Severely And Profoundly Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Meredith Jean Nicholls Jan 1974

The Effectiveness Of A Gestural Cue Language Program For Children With Severely And Profoundly Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Meredith Jean Nicholls

All Master's Theses

This study proposed to teach a group of institutionalized children with profound intellectual and developmental disabilities, functionally non-verbal children a gestural-cue language system.

Techniques of shaping and imitation were employed in the training of the subjects. Daily assessments were taken and recorded on 6 cycle logarithmic graph paper.

Of the 17 subjects involved in the study, 3 showed measurable progress and retention and were retained in the gesture program.

Recommendations included studies to further investigate the "sign" language medium as a means of communication for the severely and profoundly intellectually and developmentally disabled population.

Jews In The Mirror: From Hatred To Reconciliation In American-Jewish Fiction., Joseph D. Gallo Jan 1974

Jews In The Mirror: From Hatred To Reconciliation In American-Jewish Fiction., Joseph D. Gallo

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Isaac Rosenfeld's short novel The Colony1 is an orwellian allegory which on a significant level explores the range of attitudes expressed by contemporary Jews toward themselves and other Jews. Set in an exotic fictional country on the Indian subcontinent, the narrative pits the intellectual Satya, successor to a prophet-like leader, against the machinations of a controlling technology given to efficiency and the waging of modern war. During a rally at which he urges his audience to passively "despise and disobey," Satya is seized and imprisoned, whereupon his true ordeal begins. He is accosted by foes even more formidable than …

In This Wild Water: The Biography Of Some Unpublished Manuscripts By Robinson Jeffers, 1887-1962, James Michael Shebl Jan 1974

In This Wild Water: The Biography Of Some Unpublished Manuscripts By Robinson Jeffers, 1887-1962, James Michael Shebl

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For Robinson Jeffers, poet-philosopher and naturalist of Carmel, California, the universe is one entity, a "being out of grasp of the mind enormous." Its parts are only differing manifestations of a single energy; all bear upon one another, influence one another. According to Jeffers we humans attain true freedom and peace by turning avmy from self, from mere humanity and human contrivances, imaginings, and dreams. This is Jeffers' Doctrine of Inhumanism: a dark philosophy which proved increasingly unpopular as Jeffers more and more adamantly insisted upon dramatizing mankind's smallness in the immense context of the universe.

The biography of The …

Transformational Technique In Gabriel Fielding's "In The Time Of Greenbloom", May Grant Robbie Jan 1974

Transformational Technique In Gabriel Fielding's "In The Time Of Greenbloom", May Grant Robbie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Gabriel Fielding's In the Time of Greenbloom is a major twentieth century novel that has received literary critical attention. With its dramatic plot and colorful characters, it has an immediate surface appeal for most readers. The novel requires deeper, symbolical reading in order to reach its central theme, man's potential for transformation.

John Blaydon, the protagonist, is a very different young man at the end of the novel from the child he is at the beginning. His activities, the narrative base of the novel, reveal more than the external events of his life. Fielding uses them as objectification of confrontations …

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble Jan 1974

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Conrad ' s significance as a major novelist having been well established by the present time , one may justly turn attention to a consideration of whether Nostromo, his masterpiece, deserves the paradoxical ranking critics generally accord it as a flawed and essentially inexplicable work of genius . Nostromo is the focus of the present study, which establishes by extensive analysis that Conrad employs a complex imagistic technique, manifesting thereby not only thematic content but also compositional method. Basic to this technique is the tend ency to view a subject in terms of polarities , around which to cluster images …

The Five Old Testament Plays Of The Chester Cycle: A Paradigm Of Salvation-History, Richard Floyd Norlin Jan 1974

The Five Old Testament Plays Of The Chester Cycle: A Paradigm Of Salvation-History, Richard Floyd Norlin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the nineteenth century critics looked upon the English medieval cycle drama, or "Corpus Christi plays" as colorful folk art, having value to antiquarians but not meriting systematic critical attention. Consequently, the plays were treated chiefly from the standpoint of literary history. In more recent decades scholars have been making a fresh effort to understand and judge the Corpus Christi cycles as coherent works of religious dramatic art.

Of the four English cycles extant in manuscript---from Chester, York, Wakefield, and Lincoln·-- the cycle at Chester, though considered by some to be crude and simple, is widely regarded as the most …

The Short-Term Effects Of The Yakima Valley School Language Development Program On Non-Institutionalized Persons With Developmental Disabilities Of Different Chronological And Mental Ages, Noreen F. Simonson Jan 1973

The Short-Term Effects Of The Yakima Valley School Language Development Program On Non-Institutionalized Persons With Developmental Disabilities Of Different Chronological And Mental Ages, Noreen F. Simonson

All Master's Theses

This paper provided a field test of the expressive and receptive language development program written by the staff of Yakima Valley State School for the persons with developmental disabilities, Selah Washington. The program is a progressive one which was based on the developmental theories of Gesell and Bayley. This study sought to define the parameters of applicability from the program. The subjects, both male, non-institutionalized, persons with developmental disabilities, represented a lower and higher level of functioning than had previously been instructed with this program. The results of the study indicated gains in language development for both subjects.
