The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Cloze Procedure On The Acquisition Of English As A Second Language, Bette Lynn Eichel Jan 1985

The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Cloze Procedure On The Acquisition Of English As A Second Language, Bette Lynn Eichel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the effect of computer-assisted cloze exercises on the acquisition of English as a second language of selected community college students, and (2) to determine if computer-assisted cloze exercises were more effective for Spanish as opposed to Chinese native language students. It was hypothesized that (1) students using the CAI exercises would receive higher posttest scores than students not using the exercises, and that (2) within the experimental group, Spanish native language students would receive higher scores on a posttest of grammar proficiency than Chinese native language students. The sample for the …

A Speech Act Theory Based Interpretation Model For Written Texts, Takashi Manabe Dec 1984

A Speech Act Theory Based Interpretation Model For Written Texts, Takashi Manabe

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

In recent years, so called Speech Act Theory (a branch of the philosophy of language) has focused on such concepts as 'intention' (or 'intentionality'), 'interaction' and 'comprehension'. The author believes that this theory gives the theoretical basis for an interpretation model which is developed in this study. After human speech activities are placed in the larger context of human actions, a model which explains the performing process of speech acts is presented. In this model, four levels of intentionality are posited: utterance intent, propositional intent, illocutionary intent, and perlocutionary intent. These levels of intentionality are inseparable from each other and …

Microeconomics, Norms, And Rationality, Alexander J. Field Jul 1984

Microeconomics, Norms, And Rationality, Alexander J. Field

Economics

A divergence of views among microeconomists in general and game theorists in particular regarding the explanatory objectives of microeconomic theory has become apparent in recent years. This divergence concerns, most fundamentally, the question whether institutions, legal or customary rules, or social norms are to be classified among the endogenous as opposed to the exogenous variables in the framework of microeconomic analysis. 1 The majority of economists are probably agnostic or ambivalent on this question, not having confronted, or not having had to confront, the issue in their own work. Many have sidestepped it by treating institutions as immutable or by …

Activities that would aid in the achievement of the given objectives are suggested.

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh Jan 1984

Studies In The Relationship Between Distinctive Features And Acoustic Cues (Phonetics, Phonology)., Thomas F. Walsh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between the Distinctive Feature (DF) (+OR-)Voice and its acoustic manifestation has generated a great deal of discussion in recent years. Although it is well known that the phonological voicing contrast is often not manifested in terms of actual glottal pulsation, the exact acoustic manifestation has been debated. The collection of papers presented herein considers perceptual evidence for the acoustic manifestation of (+OR-)Voice in English stops in utterance-final position, produced without release and with no glottal pulsation during closure. It is concluded that in such cases, the primary acoustic cue to (+OR-)Voice is the preceding vocalic transition. That is …

Tomini, Jennifer W. Nourse Jan 1984

Tomini, Jennifer W. Nourse

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The Tomini of Indonesia occupy the northern Sulawesi peninsula from Donggala to Gorontalo. The name "Tomini" is both a geographic and linguistic designation. Geographically, Tomini is a thin strip of land which borders the western edge of Tomini Bay; linguistically, Tomini is a subgroup of western Central Sulawesi languages which include Toli-toli, Dondo, Bolano, Tinombo, Kasimbar, Dampelas and Ndau. Although linguistics formerly thought all Tomini languages were mutually intelligible and the different names merely referred to dialects, recent research has asserted that each group forms a separate language. Supposedly these multiple language originated from the area's many political-trading empires, which …

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks Jan 1984

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks

Honors Papers

In this paper, I hope to examine Merwin's ultimately successful quest for such a language and such a myth. Beginning with a brief description of his early work, in which the problem of language becomes a seemingly insuperable barrier to an understanding of the world, I wish to demonstrate his gradual evolution of a poetic voice which is both contemporary and universal. Of course, a study of this length will inevitably be marred by a certain amount of over-generalization and simplification. Merwin's struggle with language has been a long and arduous one, and he has explored many byways on the …

Figurative Language And Speech Play: A Study Of First Grade Children, Dena Weiss-Tisman Jan 1984

Figurative Language And Speech Play: A Study Of First Grade Children, Dena Weiss-Tisman

Honors Papers

This paper is a study of figurative language and speech play in first grade children. I will describe what types of figurative language the children use and comprehend and discuss the role of figurative language, and specifically metaphor, in speech play. I will emphasize the need to study children's language using anthropological methods as a separate entity from adult language. In this chapter, I will present a survey of the literature concerning children's speech play and figurative language, and then I will provide a brief introduction to my work.

Philosophy Of Normative Discourse And Persuasion: A Study Of Ga'dang Exhortation And Argumentation, Michael Ross Walrod Dec 1983

Philosophy Of Normative Discourse And Persuasion: A Study Of Ga'dang Exhortation And Argumentation, Michael Ross Walrod

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This work applies the insights of textlinguistics to the study of normative or persuasive discourse. Although textlinguistics is already somewhat interdisciplinary in character, it was found to be too narrow to account for normative discourse, and had to be expanded to include further considerations of cultural phenomena, norms, and the relations of these to the theory of knowledge structures. In addition to the above, there are five major contributions of this study: (1) It shows how norms and knowledge structures play a part in the process of persuasion, and also redefines persuasion as including either the changing or the perpetuating …

Proto East Mindanao And Its Internal Relationships, Andrew Franklin Ii Gallman Dec 1983

Proto East Mindanao And Its Internal Relationships, Andrew Franklin Ii Gallman

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study reconstructs Proto East Mindanao, the ancestor language from which the East Mindanao languages have developed. This is accomplished by tracing the development from the ancestor language through the intermediate proto languages, Proto North East Mindanao, Proto Central East Mindanao, and Proto South East Mindanao, to the attested daughter languages. This study also presents over 1400 reconstructed vocabulary items. The term East Mindanao used in this study refers to three groups of languages spoken on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines (in addition to Tausug, which is spoken on the island of Jolo). These …

Linguistic And Cultural Analysis Of Three Gujarati Folktales, Imanuel Gulabbhai Christian May 1983

Linguistic And Cultural Analysis Of Three Gujarati Folktales, Imanuel Gulabbhai Christian

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study represents an attempt to place linguistic analysis in the cultural setting. The linguistic aspect of this study is presented in the framework of discourse grammar following the model developed by Longacre (1976, 1983). Three Gujarati folktales are analyzed for their overall discourse structure, for their verb and sentence structure and relative importance of information in narrative discourse, and for the participant reference. A distinction is made between participant oriented narrative and event oriented narrative. In the analysis of the cultural setting the models of Levi-Strauss (1963, 1967, 1969, etc.) and Bastien (1978) are followed. In this section, on …

Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley Jan 1983

Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study tests the relative effectiveness of the standard modern paragraph theories of A. L. Becker, Francis Christensen, and Paul C. Rodgers, Jr., three major theorists contributing more sophisiticated explanations of the form of paragraphs than that of Alexander Bain, whose theory as summarized in the familiar principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis has dominated textbook explanations of paragraphing since the late nineteenth century. In this test the three theories have been applied to fourteen selected professional essays appearing in six of the best-selling composition readers. Of these essays, seven, designated as classical, are written by the most frequently anthologized …

The Invisible Discourse Of The Law: Reflections On Legal Literacy And General Education, James Boyd White Jan 1983

The Invisible Discourse Of The Law: Reflections On Legal Literacy And General Education, James Boyd White

Articles

My subject today is "legal literacy," but to put it that way requires immediate clarification, for that phrase has a wide range of possible meanings with many of which we shall have nothing to do. At one end of its spectrum of significance, for example, "legal literacy" means full competence in legal discourse, both as reader and as writer. This kind of literacy is the object of a professional education, and it requires not only a period of formal schooling but years of practice as well. Indeed, as is also the case with other real languages, the ideal of perfect …

A Dissent From The Miranda Dissents: Some Comments On The 'New' Fifth Amendment And The Old 'Voluntariness' Test, Yale Kamisar Jan 1982

A Dissent From The Miranda Dissents: Some Comments On The 'New' Fifth Amendment And The Old 'Voluntariness' Test, Yale Kamisar

Book Chapters

If the several conferences and workshops (and many lunch conversations) on police interrogation and confessions in which I have participated this past summer are any indication, Miranda v. Arizona has evoked much anger and spread much sorrow among judges, lawyers and professors. In the months and years ahead, such reaction is likely to be translated into microscopic analyses and relentless, probing criticism of the majority opinion. During this period of agonizing appraisal and reappraisal, I think it important that various assumptions and assertions in the dissenting opinions do not escape attention.

Synoptic Asymmetry: An Inter-Disciplinary Approach To The Synoptic Problem, David Herman Boltz Dec 1981

Synoptic Asymmetry: An Inter-Disciplinary Approach To The Synoptic Problem, David Herman Boltz

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

In interdisciplinary studies, the question arises of how best to mesh interrelated disciplines. Here, linguistics (in the complementary disciplines of discourse analysis and perspective) is inter-phased with New Testament scholarship at the literary juncture of the synoptic problem--a problem which is not a theological construct, but which is an anomaly inherent in the very gospel texts. Chapter 1 provides an overview and a short history of the synoptic problem, which is one of the most difficult problems in the history of ideas. The three synoptic texts (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) differ from and yet complement one another. What is the …

Aspects Of Korean Narration, Shin Ja Joo Hwang May 1981

Aspects Of Korean Narration, Shin Ja Joo Hwang

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

A dominant trend in linguistics has been sentence grammar, which deals with structures leading up to the sentence level. With more studies on semantics and pragmatics, however, there has been a growing concern for discourse grammar. Discourse, I believe, is the most natural unit of language that forms a meaningful whole. The reasons for discourse study derive from four sources: (1) from phonology come suprasegmental considerations like intonation and pitch which typically stretch over the sentence boundary; (2) from semantics comes the sense that the meaning or message is conveyed through the overall discourse, not through aggregates of sentences; (3) …

Theme In Greek Hortatory Discourse: Van Dijk And Beekman-Callow Approaches Applied To 1 John, Helen Louise Miehle May 1981

Theme In Greek Hortatory Discourse: Van Dijk And Beekman-Callow Approaches Applied To 1 John, Helen Louise Miehle

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Two independently motivated linguistic models of text analysis (the cognitively-based model of Van Dijk and the literary-semantic approach of Beekman and Callow) are used to show that the First Epistle of John is actually hierarchical in its organization, and not merely associative as many Biblical scholars have assumed. The Van Dijk and Beekman-Callow models are also compared, contrasted and combined into a composite approach, which is then applied to the text of I John chapter one to take advantage of the pragmatic emphasis of Van Dijk and the practicality of the Beekman-Callow procedures. The two models are shown to complement …

Language Conflict: A Case Study Of National Language Selection In Iran, Kenneth Pransky Jan 1981

Language Conflict: A Case Study Of National Language Selection In Iran, Kenneth Pransky

MA TESOL Collection

Iran is a complex nation composed of many nationalities and languages. Through the centuries, it has been plagued by interethnic conflicts, and rapid modernization in this century has exacerbated longstanding differences, especially between the dominant, Farsi speaking group and Iran's numerous non-Farsi speaking minorities. No issue has symbolized Iran's interethnic conflicts in this century more than language problems.

Iran's history of language conflict is treated as a case study through which to explore more universal dynamics of language conflict. Emphasis is laid on the historical development of ethnic attitudes, the function of language as a symbol of ethnicity, the necessity …

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey Jan 1981

The Austrian Problem Of Language And Peter Handke: A Documentation., Donald Russell Bailey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Linguistic skepticism and the resultant awareness of the limits of language can be traced back to Hamann, Herder, and Humboldt, through Romanticism and French Symbolism, up to modern times. What has come to be called the crisis of language (Sprachkrise) can be viewed as one segment of a broader, multi-media phenomenon. The intensity of this crisis is concentrated in Austro-Hungary in the waning days of the Habsburg Monarchy. From this time forward supersensitivity to language remains a strongly Austrian phenomenon and can be followed through the European, German-language, and Austrian movements of this century, up to the founding of the …
