Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles Jan 1990

Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper explores issues in historiography and history as reflected in some of the literary and didactic works of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). An artist of eternal merit, Tolstoy's creativity manifests his intense personal, artistic, and philosophical conflicts. In addressing the 'accursed questions' afflicting his times and society, Tolstoy became the muse of nineteenth-century Russia, but his works embody essential themes in historiography, literature, and history. Attempting to impose a unitary vision upon the rich diversity of reality, yet failing, in his literary works Tolstoy explores the inaccessibility and multiplicity of historical causation, and the dilemmas of freedom and necessity, along …

The Uneasiest State: Art, Culture, And Society In New Deal Louisiana, 1933-1943. (Volumes I And Ii)., Richard B. Megraw

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the Great Depression artists working in programs funded by the federal government roamed the nation wielding brushes, jotting notes, and pointing cameras in an attempt to define and characterize American society. Never before and not since has this country conducted so intensive a survey of itself, or one so controversial. Federal patronage of the arts occurred during an anxious period of political and cultural turmoil, a turmoil inherent in the story of the Arts Projects themselves. The very structure, organization, composition, execution, and objectives of the arts agencies mirror the tensions of the age. The artists' selection or avoidance …

Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 1989

Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The founders of the American Vincentians, Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, considered the conversion of the Native Americans one of the main purposes of the American mission, although this was not an official objective. Efforts to this end were relatively few due to a lack of personnel and resources, and the more urgent need to serve American Catholics. In 1824, while ministering to Catholics in the Arkansas Territory, John Mary Odin and John Timon said mass among the Kappas-on-Arkansas (Quapaw). In 1837, other Vincentians went to the Osages in what is now Oklahoma. These two ventures were considered major …

Building The Meat Packing Industry In South Omaha, 1883-1898, Gail Lorna Didonato

Student Work

An article by Gregory R. Zieren was brought to my attention as I was completing this study. I Dealing with recently published works on the packing industry, it critiques books that have been my constant companions over the last two years. Zieren writes, "Despite the local focus [Chicago], none of the works is parochial in its scholarly concerns, and all of them broaden our understanding of the urban and social history of one the nation's quintessential working-class districts." Chicago was the environment for the development of the modern industry and, for almost a century, was the world's leading packing center. …

Agenda: Boundaries And Water: Allocation And Use Of A Shared Resource, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource (Summer Conference, June 5-7)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.

Boundaries and Water: Allocation and Use of a Shared Resource is the topic of the Center's annual summer program on water this June. Most of the major rivers in the western United States are shared between two or more states. Often tribal governments play an important role in water allocation and use decisions. International considerations also may be involved in some cases. These interjurisdictional issues extend to groundwater as well as surface water.

This conference will provide the …

Politics In Classical Greece: The Nature Of The Polis And The Origins Of The Rule Of Law, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D. Apr 1989

Politics In Classical Greece: The Nature Of The Polis And The Origins Of The Rule Of Law, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D.

Sacred Heart University Review

Most historians of classical Greece consider the characteristic feature of Greek political life to have been the city-state or polis. Others have cited the fragmentation of the peninsula into a multitude of sovereign states, which tended to vent their tempers at one another rather than to cooperate in the face of a threat to them all, as a significant factor leading to the ultimate collapse of Greek freedom before the might of Alexander the Great in the fourth century, B.C. So cherished was the independence of a typical Greek city-state, and so jealously was it guarded, that the political history …

The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley Jan 1989

The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.
The situation in Johns Valley, from its early settlement to its demise, demonstrates the hope of the people who settled there and their efforts to make Johns Valley a productive and successful area. History also …

Reflections On State Responsibility For Violations Of Explicit Protectorate, Mandate, And Trusteeship Obligations, W. Michael Reisman Jan 1989

Reflections On State Responsibility For Violations Of Explicit Protectorate, Mandate, And Trusteeship Obligations, W. Michael Reisman

Michigan Journal of International Law

There is a rich body of law dealing with breach of treaty, its consequences and the procedural options it gives to the complying party. But violations of treaty obligations by a protecting state are procedurally different from violations between states in legal and political parity and negotiating at arm's length. The protected state or state under protectorate has, by definition, a restricted if not completely suspended competence to operate at the international level and hence is unable to protect its interests against violations by the erstwhile protector. Thus, it should be no surprise that international decision has suspended the operation …
