Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton Jan 1989

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton

Theses and Dissertations

Beginning in 1847 and continuing to the turn of the century, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were encouraged to gather to Utah, where they formed communities seperated from the evils of the world around them. While Mormonism continues to be closely associated with Utah, in 1989 it is a world-wide church with nearly seven million members, most residing outside of Utah, and many of these in major urban areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been made of how the Church has developed outside of Utah.

When the Los Angeles Stake was organized in 1923, it …

Restricted Reconnaissance: The History And Archaeology Of S M Wheeler In Nye County, Nevada, Diane Lynne Winslow

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Restricted Reconnaissance: The History and Archaeology of S. M. Wheeler in Nye County, Nevada reconstructs the archaeological career and life of one of Nevada's first archaeologists. Specifically, during the months of February and May of 1940, Wheeler worked in Nye County, Nevada. He conducted survey and collections from 12 archaeological sites which are now within the environs of the Nevada Test Site. The field notes and collections from this fieldwork were analyzed by the author in 1995. In addition, the author revisited the archaeological sites and analyzed the artifact assemblages collected by Wheeler. The results of the analysis and fieldwork …

Pro Bono Publico: New Orleans Politics And Municipal Reform In The Progressive Era, 1912-1926. (Volumes I And Ii)., Terrence Walter Fitzmorris Jan 1989

Pro Bono Publico: New Orleans Politics And Municipal Reform In The Progressive Era, 1912-1926. (Volumes I And Ii)., Terrence Walter Fitzmorris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Social prejudice and moral consideration did not form the basis of city politics and municipal reform in New Orleans during the Progressive Era. The Regular Democratic Organization, the so-called political machine and the civic reformers of New Orleans were more concerned with issues of expanding and centralized municipal authority, regulation of private and public corporations, completion and expansion of public services, "living wages" and decent working conditions for organized labor, equitable taxation and assessment rates for property holders, and city planning and development. Admittedly, the principal leadership of the municipal reform movement came from the "upper crust" of New Orleans …

Five Renaissance Chronicles In Leopold Von Ranke's Library, Raymond Paul Schrodt Oct 1988

Five Renaissance Chronicles In Leopold Von Ranke's Library, Raymond Paul Schrodt

The Courier

This article describes the chronicles of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that are maintained at the von Ranke Library within the Syracuse University Special Collections. The chronicles are diverse in nature, in both languages used and content respresented, covering chronologies, myths, and historical events. Ironically, the chronicles lack the objectivity that von Ranke was so fervent about, but the author argues these chronicles should not be measured against later standards of critical history.

The Foundations Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Jose M. Roman C.M. Oct 1988

The Foundations Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Jose M. Roman C.M.

Vincentian Studies

By tracing history of the Congregation’s establishments and houses, how they were made, and how they were supported, we can appreciate Vincent de Paul as an organizer and administrator and understand the Congregation’s development. Vincent’s principles for foundations were to never take the initiative in establishing them, to accept only stable ones, and to start with small ones to build up larger ones. He was careful to ensure that the Congregation and its works would be self-sufficient. Initiative for foundations came largely from bishops, but also from wealthy laity, teams of founders, and royalty. Foundations replicated the Congregation’s initial one, …

Indian reservations constitute about 2.5% of all land in the country and 5% of all land in the American West. During the last two decades, Indian natural resources issues have moved to the forefront as tribal governments have dramatically expanded their regulatory programs, judicial systems. and resource development activities. This major symposium will address current developments and assess likely future directions in the areas of tribal, federal, and state regulation; tribal-state intergovernmental agreements; financing; mineral …

The Twentieth-Century Revolution In Family Wealth Transmission, John H. Langbein Feb 1988

The Twentieth-Century Revolution In Family Wealth Transmission, John H. Langbein

Michigan Law Review

The main purpose of this article is to sound a pair of themes about the ways in which these great changes in the nature of wealth have become associated with changes of perhaps comparable magnitude in the timing and in the character of family wealth transmission. My first theme, developed in Part II, concerns human capital. Whereas of old, wealth transmission from parents to children tended to center upon major items of patrimony such as the family farm or the family firm, today for the broad middle classes, wealth transmission centers on a radically different kind of asset: the investment …

A Fourth Grade Social Studies Unit On Washington State, Jodeanna R. Weller

All Graduate Projects

Methods and procedures were developed for teaching higher level thinking skills. A social studies unit on Washington State specifying thirty contact hours was formulated. Social Studies was selected because of its potential applicability for teaching higher level thinking skills. Recommendations included the development of pre and post tests to measure conceptual gain from the unit activities and suggested further research be conducted on higher level thinking skill activities and their integration into the classroom curriculum.

Yilgarn: Good Country For Hardy People: The Landscape And People Of The Yilgarn Shire, Western Australia, Lyall Hunt (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

This study of the environment and people of the Yilgarn region of Western Australia grew from a decision of the Shire of Yilgarn to commemorate the centenary of the discovery of commercial deposits of gold in the district in 1887-1888. The idea stemmed from the vision of Mr Romolo Patroni who saw the need to record the experiences of Yilgarn pioneers. He convinced the shire council under Cr Kenneth Beaton, president, 1972-1982, to publish a history of the district. The plan was fostered by Cr John Panizza, who became shire president in 1982 and brought to fruition by Cr Patroni …

Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin Jan 1988

Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin

New England Journal of Public Policy

"We stand nakedly in front of a very serious pandemic, as mortal as any pandemic there ever has been," said Halfdan Mahler, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO). "I don't know of any greater killer than AIDS, not to speak of its psychological, social and economic maiming. Everything is getting worse and worse with AIDS and all of us have been underestimating it, and I in particular. We're running scared. I cannot imagine a worse health problem in this century." When asked to compare AIDS to other epidemics, such as smallpox, that have infected and killed over the course …
